Meets four days a week for four weeks, five hours each day. After completing the class, three days of clinicals

are required, with each day going for eight hours. One student worked during the clinicals at a local nursing

home performing all of the tasks required of a CNA. After completion of the course, he took the Minnesota

State Exam (written and performance based), and passed it to become certified.

Columbia Presbyterian Hospital

One student assisted with laboratory work for a minimally-invasive urological surgery team. Performed

cryoablation and laparoscopic surgery on pigs, wrote protocols for various experiments and attended weekly

meetings. Shadowed surgeons 4-6 hrs/week.

One student assisted with two studies regarding the affects of pollution on prenatal development. The first

assessed children in the New York metropolitan area exposed prenatally to World Trade Center fallout; the

other involved examination of chord blood found in inhabitants of Chinese village located upwind of a power

UMDNJ/Robert Wood Johnson Summer Clinical Internship

In 2012: June 5 – 15. Participants will have the opportunity to shadow clinical faculty members at the

medical facilities in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Distinguished faculty from a variety of specialties will host

students. Students will be paired with faculty in specialties representing students’ interests. Students are

encouraged to keep the hours of the clinicians in order to get a real sense of the specialty, the issues in patient

care and the practice of medicine. A lunchtime seminar series will complement the clinical experiences.

Students will also take part in a pedagogic exercise at the end of the program. Students will make brief

presentations to their peers on topics selected and researched with the guidance of the faculty preceptors. A

One student volunteered at the Center for Global Pediatrics over four summers, assisting with collection and

analysis of data, preparation of research findings for presentation, and consultation to the research team in

designing a behavioral component to a longitudinal nutrition study of African, Asian, and Eastern European

children formerly internationally institutionalized.

Community Health Center of Burlington

One student raised awareness about the mission of the CHCB as an outreach volunteer, took blood pressure,

and worked with doctors, nurses, and patients of different socioeconomic classes.

Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, NY

One student volunteered on an inpatient pediatric ward. Interacted with patients and their families in both

group play sessions and individually in patient rooms.

Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific, Honolulu, HI

One student volunteered in both the inpatient and outpatient clinics, assisting the occupational and physical

therapists as they trained and treated patients. She accompanied patients in treatment, assisting them in

ambulation when needed, and helped with the therapeutic exercise; she also spent time doing paperwork in

the medical records office, purging old patient progress reports.

Shepard Poverty Alliance Intern; PACT Therapeutic Nursery; Baltimore, MD

One student volunteered at the PACT Therapeutic Nursery in downtown Baltimore with homeless infants

and their families. She worked with teachers and social workers to promote healthy parent-child attachments.

Through therapeutic play sessions and age appropriate activities, they encouraged parents to engage and build

positive relationships with their children. The nursery provided a safe atmosphere for children to grow and

learn during the critical years of their lives. She also assisted in the weekly parent group, teaching young

mothers necessary life skills and helping them to find permanent housing for their families.

St. Vincent’s Hospital, Harrison, NY

One student volunteered on the psychiatric outpatient ward in adult and adolescent groups five days a week.

Interacted with the patients in both group therapy sessions and informal, adolescent recreation time.

Tafelsig Clinic/Mitchell’s Plain Day Hospital, Capetown, South Africa

One student was an intern/medical shadow: she participated in patient exams, observed procedures at a clinic

and day hospital in an impoverished township area. Procedures varied from basic pediatric care to

HIV/AIDS staging and treatment, and included emergency care, reproductive health/pregnancy terminations,

psychiatric evaluation, TB screening and treatment. Clinic work was full time for five weeks and provided an

incredible look at the public health challenges currently facing South Africa. The internship also included ten

days of training/acculturation prior to beginning clinic work.

Tsunami Relief-Volunteer, Phuket, Thailand

One student worked on constructing a fresh- water pipeline and numerous houses for the village of Nam

Kim.

Veterinary Assistant—One student worked alongside Colorado State’s Veterinary Professor, Dr. Gen, acting

as a translator to the Japanese for English- and Spanish-speaking pet owners. Worked with over 40 animals

ranging from dogs and cats to snakes, turtles and rodents.

Comprehensive Rural Health Project (CRHP) Hospital, Jamkhed, India

Medical Assistant —One student assisted in delivering babies as well as in surgery. Held shifts to provide

emergency first-aid medical care.

EKO Tracks- Summer Vet Study in South Africa

Eko Tracks, in Cary, NC, offers a study-abroad program specifically designed for students in veterinary

science, vet tech and pre-vet, where they will meet and interact with wildlife veterinarians in South Africa,

hands-on, and learn about the crucial role of veterinarians in the growing African wildlife industry by

participating in game capture operations, field and lab work. This program focuses on wildlife veterinary

science, wildlife diseases and medicine, capture and care of wild animals, breeding of rare species, wildlife

Pharmaceutical Research Assistant—one student performed supervised research on cell signaling pathway for

tumor suppresser drug development: she was responsible for western blots, cell and bacteria culture, DNA

Harvard University

Immunology laboratory associated with Massachusetts General Hospital. One student worked as a research

intern seeking an Anthrax vaccine using cDNA and a C3D complement in order to induce a higher antibody

response, and in 2005 on a project involved with the study of LSE, a protein involved in the pathway directly

linked with symptoms of systemic Lupus.

Hospital for Special Surgery, New York, NY

One student worked on two research projects for Dr. Nigel Sharrock, Chief of Anesthesiology. Analyzed a

2,000 patient database of hip replacements over the course of 10 years regarding the risk factors involved in

the development of clinical DVT and PE. These findings were presented at the European Orthopedics

Conference and are currently being written up for publication. The second project involved reading medical

files regarding UTI’s developed during total hip and total knee surgeries.

Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, MD

One student worked as a research assistant in the laboratory of Valeria Culotta, Ph.D.

Maine Medical Center Research Institute (MMCRI)

MMCRI is the research arm of the Maine Medical Center, and is located in Scarborough, a suburb of

Portland, Maine. The research at MMCRI covers a broad area in biomedical science, including vascular

biology, stem cell biology, developmental biology, neurobiology, hematology, nephrology, skeletal biology,

cancer biology, and molecular genetics.

Massachusetts General Hospital Neuroendocrine Unit, Boston, MA

One student was a clinical Research Assistant: Research protocol investigating hormonal activity in

overweight adolescents. Assisted with patient visits, blood sample storage and data analysis including

deconvolution.

One student interned full-time in the Laboratory for Molecular Medicine, where she accessed and extracted

DNA from blood, saliva, and buccal cells; researched various genetic diseases using online journal databases

to foster development of genetic tests; created Excel spreadsheets of the frequency of mutations for 6 genetic

diseases in various populations; assisted a team of four on the Gene Chip project for Hypertrophic

Cardiomyopathy; utilized Mutation Surveyor to view patient DNA sequences and examine mutations; and

trained and supervised a new intern.

UC Santa Barbara Dept. of Developmental Biology

One student worked on many projects in a semi-independent fashion including, but not limited to, RNAi

screens, Immunohistochemistry and C.elegans matings. These projects were performed in a developmental

biology lab but, as they pertain to programmed cell death (apoptosis), have implications in cancer research.

University of Connecticut Health Center Summer Fellowship Program

One student performed breast cancer research for the Department of Vascular Biology. In this position she

studied tumor progression in mouse models under combined treatment of antioxidants and caloric restriction,

using such techniques as cell culturing, fluorescent microscopy/GFP (tracking of metastasis); and she

performed animal harvests and histological analysis of tissues.One student conducted PCR, handled mice,

conducted FACS staining and analysis. The summer concluded with a PowerPoint presentation of her work’s

conclusions.

One student collaborated on a research project examining retrograde signaling patterns of injured neuronal

cells and presented an individualized research project. Attended weekly lab meetings and departmental

seminars addressing current research.

Clinical oncology research (with Fletcher Allen Health Care). One student spearheaded a study investigating

influential factors in decision making for women with early stage breast cancer, and observed several surgical

procedures with Dr. Larry McCahill. In 2007 he continued the breast cancer research, examining mastectomy

rate as a quality indicator for surgical breast cancer treatment and comparing the efficacy of two techniques

for localization of nonpalpable ductal carcinoma in situ breast cancers.

University of Washington Amgen Scholars’ Program

Competitive international summer research fellowship for one summer of research at one of thirteen leading

research universities in the world. Travel, room and board, stipend. Application deadline February 1. One

student worked on the following projects: (1) Generated 2-dimensional protein fingerprints of MCF-7 breast

cancer cell lysates, comparing global protein expression between chemotherapy resistant and susceptible

populations. (2) Generated a dose-response curve relating expression of RecA DNA repair enzyme with a

range of chemotherapy dosages in Deinococcus radiodurans. Skills acquired: mammalian cell culture, western

blotting, basic capillary electrophoresis, bacterial cell culture, flow cytometry.

SUMMER CAMP POSITIONS

Adaptive Sports Center, Crested Butte, CO

One student was lead instructor: organized all trip logistics including equipment and menu planning for

outdoor trips three to twelve days in length; facilitated summer outdoor activities for clients with physical and

developmental disabilities.

Camp Jabberwocky, Martha’s Vineyard

The camp is run for children and young adults with mental and physical disabilities and runs for about eight

weeks, from the end of June to the end of August. Jabberwocky serves about 30 campers each week, with a

staff of about 25 volunteers who receive no formal pay but who do receive free room and board while living

at camp. (Travel expenses to Martha’s Vineyard are also covered by the camp.) Jabberwocky is divided into

two sessions, each about four weeks in duration. The first session is held primarily for adult campers whereas

the second enrolls a greater number of younger campers. Application deadline 3/15 each year.]
