    The following is a listing of Summer opportunities for pre-health students. This list includesopportunities nationwide in several different areas. The list is organizedalphabetically and is broken down into 2 subsections: Enrichment Opportunities andResearch Opportunities. The list includes programs appropriate for those interestedin medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine.

    This list has been compiled from many different resources, and therefore its complete accuracycannot be guaranteed. Please contact me if you discover any misinformation. I

    would like to keep the list as current and accurate as possible. In addition, please beaware that this list is not comprehensive but just a place for you to begin your searchfor health-related summer opportunities. You may be aware of other opportunities inyour hometown that do not appear on the Summer Opportunities List. I encourageyou to continue to investigate other prospects in your area of interest.     Description: Project Health Care is a program centered

    around the Department of Emergency. It exposes students toa variety of experiences and fosters knowledge about careersin health care. Participants are expected to participate in CPRfirst aid and self-defense classes and perform certain tasks andassist the medical staff.

    Eligibility: Annually, the program accepts up to 30 studentsfrom the Northeast who must work 22 hours per week.Applications from motivated college students with a stronginterest in health care and a willingness to participate in allaspects of healthcare (medicine, physician assistants, clinicalpsychologist, and clinical social workers) are encouraged.

    Barbara Jordan Congressional Scholars Program atHoward University

    Description: A program to honor the legacy of former Kaiser

    Trustee and Congresswoman, Barbara Jordan, by creatingnew opportunities for minority students in health policy andeventually, increasing the numbers of minority health policyprofessionals. The program will annually provide 10 talented,economically disadvantaged college seniors or recentgraduates with a 9-week summer college internship in acongressional office with major health policy responsibilities.The scholars will gain exposure to health policy issues andfirsthand understanding of how the federal government works.Scholars will receive a stipend of $1500 upon completion of theprogram, an allowance for incidentals, travel expenses to DCand lodging at Howard University.

    Eligibility: Candidates must be in their senior year ofundergraduate study or have graduated within the last twelve

    months from an accredited US college or university.

    Description: Health Careers Opportunity Program is designedto identify minority and disadvantaged college students withinterest and aptitude for careers in medicine and allied health,

    Center for Talented Youth

    Description:The Center for Talented Youth (CTY) summerpre-college programs are offered at colleges and universitiesthroughout the nation. The programs are three weeks long, andstudents take only one course. This intense immersion in a

    subject has proven to be both challenging and stimulating forstudents of high ability. In addition to their course work,students enjoy a rich experience outside the classroom. Theylive on campus under the supervision of resident assistantsand participate in activities ranging from sports, to arts andcrafts, to music, to special events such as dances and astudent talent show. Staff provides a safe and supportiveenvironment appropriate for pre-collegiate students. Thestarting salary for instructors ranges from $1800-$2800 per 3-week session, depending on education and experience.Instructional assistants earn $900 per 3-week session, andresidential assistants earn $1000 per 3-week session. Salariesfor administrators vary by position. Room and board areprovided at residential sites where each staff member getshis/her own room in a college dormitory.

    Description: Internship in Building Community (IBC) IBCaffords students the opportunity to participate in an extendedprogram devoted to developing the interpersonal skills

    necessary to build communities. There is a two-week Seminarled by professionals in the field of community building and afour-week Practicum where students serve as residentadvisors and program assistants for ColumbiasSummerProgram for High School Students and are responsible forcreating a cohesive, lively, respectful student body.     Frontier Nursing Service

    Wendover, KY

    Description: The Frontier Nursing Service (FNS) is anorganization dedicated to improving health care services inrural Kentucky. They deliver babies, run 3 rural health clinics,

    a womens health care center, and a 40-bed hospital. Theinternship program hires interns or couriers throughout theyear. In addition to delivering supplies, couriers assist doctors,midwives, family nurse practitioners and nurses in a variety ofways. All couriers are provided housing at FNS.

    Eligibility: Students interested in the health professions,particularly rural health care. Applicants should be interestedin helping others and have a valid drivers license and car (allmileage accumulated for official FNS duties is reimbursed). A$250 registration fee is required upon admission into theProgram. This money covers the expenses for room andboard.

    Description: This program is designed to exposeundergraduate students to the field of dentistry and tostrengthen their science backgrounds. It allows students to

    interact with dental practitioners and dental students whoprovide monitoring and support. Students receive informationon various dental specialties and skills/attributes necessary tosucceed in a dental career. Program emphasizes developmenof strong academic skills. Students work with dental materialsin laboratory setting. No cost for students residing in residencehalls. Transportation to and from school is provided forselected students.

    Medical College of Georgia

    Description: All students will study a biomedical sciencecourse for four hours of credit; attend a learning skills seminar;and take courses in MCAT review, analytical reading, andmedical writing. Each student receives a biweekly stipend forliving expenses and the program pays tuition and campushousing fees. Upon successful completion of the program, thestudent will receive an additional stipend. There is no travelallowance.

    Eligibility: Designed for 2 levels of college students who areinterested in the health professions. Students in theintermediate group should have finished their freshman orsophomore year.
