(Continued from page 1)

We are pleased to announce that an interim period will begin in early June. Most ALC members will already be acquainted with Pastor Renee Tecklenberg, who also served as Interim Associate from December 2012 to December 2013. Pastor Renee is looking forward to her return to ALC.

Long before Pastor Bailey announced her resignation from ALC, plans were underway for me to take a sabbatical leave this summer. ALC’s Personnel Manual states: “American Lutheran provides sabbatical leave for the spiritual and professional renewal of Clergy.” The policy offers a two-month leave, which includes a pastor’s normal annual two weeks continuing education time, for pastors who have served a minimum of six consecutive years. Vacation is granted as in any other year.

At its March 2017 meeting I informed the Personnel Committee of my intent to take a sabbatical and the Council was made aware of it the following month. Early this year my detailed proposal was approved by the Personnel Committee, then by the Church Council at its February 15th meeting. My leave of 60 days is scheduled to begin June 11 and conclude August 15, not counting July 15-21 due to commitments here. Sabbatical study components planned include Luther Academy of the Rockies in June and Holden Village in early August.

With an interim having the experience of Pastor Renee in place, both our Synod and our Church Council are supportive of me taking my sabbatical at this time, for which I am thankful. With Pastor Renee’s familiarity already with the congregation I am confident that everything will go smoothly these coming months. Prior to the beginning of my leave I will coordinate with Pastor Renee and other staff to ensure continuity of ministries in my absence. During my leave I will stay in touch with and be reachable by staff as well as council and building committee leaders for questions or concerns.

I am extremely grateful to the ALC congregation for your strong support of your staff, which we all feel in so many ways. Thank you especially for your understanding over these coming months. May you also be blessed with times of spiritual and physical renewal this summer.

Peace in Christ, Pastor Gary

Shetek Lutheran Ministries Seeks Campaign Office Coordinator Shetek Lutheran Ministries (SLM), known also as Camp Shetek, is planning to launch a capital campaign later this year and is looking for a Capital Campaign Coordinator. The position would be half to 2/3 time and this person would essentially be in the SLM office doing data entry, record keeping, etc. A draft job description is available from Pastor Gary upon request, or interested persons can contact Marv Nysetvold, SLM Executive Director, at 507-763-3567 or 507-227-7379(c).

What is a Sabbatical Leave? God gives the sabbath pattern (e.g., Gen. 2:1-3; Ex. 20:12; Lev. 25:1-7) as a time of renewal, a time to be reminded of whose we are and what we are called to do, a time of rest that refreshes us for life. Throughout the Bible ac-counts of sabbath are clearly set apart by rest, quiet places, and time for restoration. Jesus told his disciples to “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest awhile …” (Mark 6:31).

Similar to sabbatical leaves in the field of education, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) encourages congregations to allow sabbaticals for clergy at regular intervals. Life-long continuing education for rostered leaders is important for sustained vitality in ministry, including extended time for personal study and reflection, a time to pursue personal interests, and a time of renewal around things that will benefit the congregation. The bottom line is that it is a time without the demands of a regular schedule for the rostered leader “to not do what you normally do.” Experience shows that the ministries of both the pastor and the congregation benefit.

Tim Bickett, Group Mission Trip Coordinator—Worthington

Summer of 2019…Worthington

With their humble beginnings going back to the early 1990s, Group Mission Trips has been working with and helping communities across the United States and the world. As the non-profit mission ministry

of Group Cares, they work hard to bring meaningful service to communities. Since their beginning, thousands upon thousands of mission trip participants have racked up millions of volunteer hours serving people in need.

It is with much excitement that I announce that in July 2019 Worthington is one of these lucky communities. Teenagers will come together to serve while building strong, long-lasting relationships with their friends and youth leaders. In these six short days they are here, hundreds of teenagers from youth groups across the country repair and transform homes while growing closer to Jesus.

In the coming months I will be sharing more information about this amazing opportunity and ways that you can get involved. Please pray for the newly formed partnership of Groups Mission Trips, Worthington High School and American Lutheran Church that their leadership will strive to make this event a blessing to our community.

NATIONAL YOUTH GATHERING Soon we will be packing our bags and loading a bus to Houston, Texas. Our adventure begins on June 24th. We would like to ask you to please pray for this amazing experience. Pray for us that are going…that we would be open to learning from the community we are visiting and

grow closer as a group and closer to Jesus. We look forward to sharing our experiences with you when we return. We will make a difference!

Sylvia Andersen, Worship & Music Coordinator

Piano Dedication – May 20th The grand piano has been blessed and dedicated to the glory of God. Sunday afternoon, May 20th, about 50 people gathered to hear Cindy Anderson, Kurt Haag and Sylvia Andersen play some of their favorite piano pieces and Karen Skog shared scriptures and prayers. At the end of the program, all came forward to lay hands on the piano to bless and dedicate it. And then, we had wonderful refreshments hosted by

the Worship and Music Committee!

The Prayer of Blessing

Send your blessing upon us and upon this grand piano,

which we dedicate to your praise and glory.

Enrich the lives of your people through it,

and grant us faith to hear your gracious purpose in it.

By your Holy Spirit, let this piano

enliven the proclamation of your word

to the building up of your church, to the glory of your name,

and to the good of all your people;

through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Thank You to all who donated to the purchase of the piano and the support of those that were able to attend the dedication concert!

Bailey Fossum, Associate Pastor

Ephesians 1:15-16 For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your

love for all God’s people, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.

Nearly 5 years, I experienced an answered an incredible call to American Lutheran. While on the morning of June 20th, 2013 I was preparing for my final interview for Ordination, I did not realize I would be presented with a congregation that I have been blessed with. A congregation that Paul sums up pretty well by saying “I have not stopped giving thanks for you.” So as June 10th approaches and as I am writing my final Messenger article for ALC, what I wanted to share with you is “THANK YOU”. Serving as your Associate Pastor has been such an incredible blessing to me, that I cannot find the right words to describe how much it has meant to me.

As I look back, I am thankful for all that you taught me about faith, and living out our faith in this world. You have taught me creativity and hope even when we don’t always see eye to eye. You have taught me and shown me grace as we explore new things together, sometimes working and sometimes not so much. You have shown and lived out love with no limit. You have shown me that truly the Gospel and God’s love cannot be limited to just our walls as I have seen it at work in Worthington as we’ve served through God’s Work Our Hands; watching and hearing the youth share about their mission trips and Gathering experiences; digging a water well, helping refugees in need, and helping hurricane victims with our Wednesday UpBeat! offerings; and so many more.

Above all, I’m thankful for the life of ministry here at ALC. The joys of baptisms and celebrations of weddings, visits and meetings with families at different times of their lives, experimenting and living out different ways to worship together, Confirmation Camp, 1st Communion classes, service project nights, and being welcomed into this incredible church as one of your pastors. For you, for this time, for this place, for the Holy Spirit’s callings, I am incredibly thankful.

In my heart and in my prayers, thank you,

Pastor Bailey

Pastoral Care

Weddings: Anna Hassel & Jake Smith were married in Chamberlain, SD on May

12, 2018 with Pastor Bailey Fossum officiating.

Baptisms:

Hailey Jean DeGroot, daughter of Trent & Melissa DeGroot, was baptized on May 13, 2018.

Harper Ann Huls, daughter of Chris & Hannah Huls, was baptized on May 13, 2018.

Abigail Nichole Larson, daughter of Dustin & Brittany Larson, was baptized on May 27, 2018.

Reagan Rae Heidebrink, daughter of Josh & Allison Heidebrink, was baptized on May 27, 2018.

Congratulations ALC members for participating in another successful Manna Food Pantry campaign during the Lenten

season. Your dollars made it possible for many struggling families to have nourishing meals. Our congregation is just one of several participating donors in Nobles County. This year there were 245

donations and with the matching funds from the WORTHINGTON HEALTH CARE FOUNDATION, the total dollars raised was

$67,613.13. As a congregation we donated $8,477.38.

After a screening process families are registered on an annual basis. The process includes proof of residence with approved identification and proof of

income. This includes other sources of assistance or benefits they are receiving, such as, free or reduced lunches, WIC,

Head Start, Social Security benefits, etc. The process assures that qualified families are receiving the benefits.

Beside your generous contributions volunteers are always needed! THANK YOU AGAIN!

Cindy Ira-Smith, Faith Community Nurse

Fatigue & its Effects June is National Safety Month. Visit the National Safety Council Website for more detailed information.

Fatigue affects everything we do and can result in accidents.

Fatigue-The Causes:

• Sleep Deprivation-we need at least 7 hours per night

• Time of day- we are least alert between midnight and 6 am

• Time on Task- it is difficult to do tedious or mentally demanding tasks for long periods.

Fatigue-The Effects:

• We think slower and less clearly when sleep deprived

• We are less productive and are more likely to make critical safety mistakes

• Our mistakes can be costly. Fatigue can lead to many chronic diseases.

God created our bodies to store enough energy to get us through the day. But we need rest in order to recharge. This cycle of work and sleep is necessary to function at our best.

In Matt.11-28 it says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened

and I will give you rest.”

From the Stewardship Committee… Jesus lived an unselfish life. We, on the other hand, are by nature selfish people . Through the working of the Holy Spirit, however, we are transformed into giving people. God changes us from people who take into people who give. It is Christ’s love within us that compels us to give (2 Corinthians 5:14). As we give, we receive the joy that comes from giving.

Building Project Update Several milestones have been reached for the project.

First, the members of the Building Committee have been finalized: Verne Correll, Adam Dahlquist, Harlan Handevidt, Dan Horn, Anne LeBrun, Marlyn Mammen, Dave Nerem, Karen Pfeifer, Derek Schmitz, Mike Stoll (chair), and Pastor Gary.

Second, several sub-committees have been formed and have started working on the details connected with a project of this scale pertaining to Technology, Construction, the Administration portion of the building and Interior design. These committees have been meeting on a regular basis with the project architect as well as on their own.

Third, the Worthington Planning Commission and the Worthington City Council have approved our requests for variances to a couple of building regulations and have issued the Conditional Use permit required for us to proceed. More details will be provided in the June Messenger.

Fourth, Since being informed by the City of Worthington that our church is indeed located in the flood plain, the Committee has decided to follow the architect's recommendation and raise the foundation for the addition 1ft to get above the flood plain. Consequently, the plans for the addition have been revised so that access to the south and east entrances of the addition will use permanent ramps along with sidewalks, while the north entrance will have a driveway drop-off also with steps. This drop-off will be directly outside the access to the new elevator.

Lutheran Night at Target Field Tuesday, July 31 @ 7:10 pm. Cost is $58 per person. The price includes your game ticket and the bus fee. Tentative leave time will be at 1:00 pm from the parking lot of First

Lutheran. Deadline to sign up is Monday, June 25, 2018. Please call First Lutheran Church at 376-6148 to sign up and for further information.

The Transformation Continues… With fresh paint, some repurposed furniture—and a few new pieces thrown in—and lots of elbow

grease, our lower-level Sunday school space has been transformed into a “Multi-Purpose” room for all to enjoy.

A pallet-wood feature wall is now the backdrop for a cozy seating area opposite another feature wall (a

giant chalkboard) and two harvest tables nestle inside another nook to provide intimate space for smaller

groups, like Bible Study and First Communion classes. The wide-open area provides a play space for Sunday

school programming as well as Play and Pray and other youth activities. This redesigned space is utilized by

many groups for meetings, yoga, gatherings, classes, and so much more.

A huge THANK YOU to the many people who helped with various projects.

have also been updated. If it’s been awhile since you’ve ventured

OFFERING UPDATE Thank for your help so far. We are making progress,

but we have much to make up for as a result of winter storms. We have improved our Box 1

operating shortfall slightly. We are still over $37,000 short of meeting our expenses as of April 30, 2018. That compares with a shortfall of $1,069 last year in

the same time period. As we approach the typical lower attendance summer months, the church

council is concerned about running further behind in the months ahead. Please keep your giving to the

Box 1 Operating Fund up to date or help in any way you can. — Thank You. The Church Council
