SUMMER NEWSLETTER 2019 Dear Members and Parents It’s a very busy time of year for Pony Club with all the Area competitions coming up and planning for Camps underway. Our One Day Event at Coombelands was once again a real success thanks to the fantastic teamwork and hard work of the people who ran it. Due to slow entries from Pony Club members we opened this competition up and ended up with a full day of 180 entries! Jane Fletcher did a brilliant job of organising the event with the able help of Rosie Giraudet, Karen Dance, Lisa Yates, Tanya Bracci, Gill Ibbott, Kate Inskip, Penny Briggs and Julie Gordon. A massive team of helpers then made the event run smoothly on the day and helped with the set up the day before. A special mention to Suzy Harrison, who produced a fabulous lunch for the 70+ organisers, judges, scorers and helpers there on the day – I am sure this delicious lunch will be very helpful in encouraging people to come back and help again next year! There were lots of good results from Petersfield members on the day – all on the website! It seems like ages ago but Clinics at Easter at Stockbridge Farm in Tilford were extremely well attended and greatly enjoyed. These were a good opportunity for many to have their first cross country outing of the season. Thank you to Robbie Bayne Powell, Toria Macdonald, Dan Dyer and Anna Porter Wright for great organisation and to all our excellent instructors. Our Showjumping and Cross Country Competition at Fair Oak was also a success although with lower entries than usual because of other events happening on the same day we think. A huge amount of work went into planning the event by Gill Ibbott, ably supported by Rosie Giraudet and again a huge team of helpers on the day. Our Mounted Games Friendly and Area Mounted Games competition both took place at Chase Farm in April and May. Both were beautifully organised again by Lindsay Kelly and ran extremely smoothly. Thank you to Mandy Winter, our Mounted Games Organiser and a special thank you to Wendy Lewis and family for their continuing support of mounted games in the branch and to Jedi Lewis for brilliant commentating! We are now in the final stages of planning our Camps for the summer and look forward to seeing you at those and of course at our Summer Show, which is always the finale of our summer season – schedule enclosed! We would like to extend an invitation this year to any members and families who would like to come and see what Senior Camp is all about. Anyone who would like to is welcome to visit. Please join us on Tuesday 27 August at about 1.45 pm. You can then watch the afternoon rides, see the campsite and stables and join the campers for tea and cake after riding at about 4.00 pm. If you could drop me an email to let me know if you are coming that would be great for catering purposes: [email protected] We continue to hear very positive things about Petersfield Pony Club from our own members and other branches. It is good to know that we continue to go against the national trend with our growing membership – thank you to all of you for your support! Big congratulations to Rachel Fisher, mum to member Danni on her success at the Mitsubishi Motors Cup at Badminton on the lovely Sid. A great report from her inside the Newsletter. Finally, good luck to all our members representing us at Area competitions in all the disciplines this month. All results will be on the website. We are very proud of you all for representing us at these important competitions. Happy summer holidays! Gill, Jane and Kate

SUMMER NEWSLETTER 2019

Dear Members and Parents

It’s a very busy time of year for Pony Club with all the Area competitions coming up and planning for Camps underway.

We would like to extend an invitation this year to any members and families who would like to come and see what Senior

Camp is all about. Anyone who would like to is welcome to visit. Please join us on Tuesday 27 August at about 1.45 pm. You can then watch the afternoon rides, see the campsite and stables and join the campers for tea and cake after riding at about 4.00 pm. If you could drop me an email to let me know if you are coming that would be great for catering purposes: [email protected]

We continue to hear very positive things about Petersfield Pony Club from our own members and other branches.

REQUEST FROM THE TREASURER!

Could we please ask that SEPARATE CHEQUES are written for separate

activities; this is for accounting purposes.

N.B. PLEASE NO BACs PAYMENTS as these are incredibly labour intensive

for our VOLUNTEER Treasurer.

If you need to make an alteration to a cheque you have written please note that the bank now requires your full

signature above the alteration; initials are no longer sufficient.

Thank you

EMAIL ADDRESSES Please ensure you have a current, working email address recorded with us that you also check regularly. We use using email more and more to notify members of rallies/training times and upcoming events, as well as the Facebook Group.

TURNOUT

Would you please all pay careful attention to turnout of yourselves and your pony/horse

when attending all Rallies and Training. Please make sure your boots are polished,

jodhpurs, tack etc are clean and that your hair is in a hairnet – not loose

EARRINGS are NOT allowed under any circumstance. This will be strictly enforced

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS 10 and UNDER

If your pony does not have a martingale, make sure you always come to rallies, events etc with a stirrup leather around the pony’s neck. This is for you to hold onto when things do not go right to avoid pulling on your pony’s mouth and perhaps to save you from falling off.

Page 3: SUMMER NEWSLETTER 2019 - The Pony Club …SUMMER NEWSLETTER 2019 Dear Members and Parents Powell, Toria It’s a very busy time of year for Pony Club with all the Area competitions

PARENTS & MEMBERS PLEASE NOTE: STIRRUPS

nsure that your stirrups and boots fit correctly. For very good safety reasons Pony Club rules require the following: “Standard riding or

jodhpur boots with a fairly thin, smooth sole and a well-defined square cut heel” and “Stirrups should be of the correct size to suit the rider’s boots. There must 7mm (¼”) clearance on either side of the boot”.

These rules together with the requirement not to wear other unsuitable footwear including boots and stirrups with interlocking treads, are there to minimise the risk of the foot becoming caught in the stirrup in a fall which can cause very serious injuries. If you are buying new boots check the size of stirrups with the new boots.

At our competitions last summer this was probably the most common problem picked up by tack checkers. We will be checking this at our MAD’s over the winter and will advise you if your stirrups are the wrong size, but please also check yourself.

If you go to a Pony Club competition with incorrect size stirrups, you may not be allowed to take part.

SAFETY AT RALLIES

lease can you all make sure that unless you are riding in a lesson, that you only walk (mounted/dismounted), especially when

going from your trailer to the lesson. The car park is a potentially dangerous situation with a lot of ponies, children, dogs etc milling around. It is the responsibility of everyone present to ensure that all measures are taken to safeguard both ponies and people at all times. Please be aware of safety. Also, it is your responsibility to pick up any horse droppings and hay in the parking area and in the school – if that is where the lesson is taking place.

We have also decided that if an event is cancelled for any reason it will say so on Petersfield Pony Club’s Home Page of the website.

SOUTH DOWNS BLOODHOUNDS

Introduction to Hunting with the South Downs Bloodhounds – Wednesday 21 August – 9.00 am

Location: The Kennels, Hatch Barn, Alexanders Lane, Privett GU34 3PW Members of Petersfield Pony Club are warmly invited to bring their horses/ponies to the Kennels for a relaxed hunting “taster” event. The event will begin with a look around the Kennels, to meet the hounds, hunt horses and Senior Master, Jeremy Whaley. Riders will then mount up as a group and follow the hounds around the lanes at walk and trot under the guidance of the Field Master and other Hunt Members including the Youth Section. Return to the Kennels will be at approximately 11.00 am where they hope members will join them for drinks and cake supplied by the Hunt Club Committee. The aim of this event is to provide a low-key non-intimidating opportunity for ponies to see hounds without the excitement and pressure of an actual Meet, and to give newcomers to hunting the chance to meet Hunt members and ask all the questions they want to before attending a hunting day. It is suitable for all ages and levels of ability and there is no limit on numbers. Parents are welcome to accompany on foot or on horse. Parking is at the Kennels (will be signed). There is no charge for this event, but please confirm attendance with Lorraine Robinson before Saturday 17 August so that we have a firm idea of numbers.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS FOR JUNIOR & SENIOR CAMPS

n view of the current outbreak of Equine Flu please bring your passport and vaccination records with you We are following the Pony Club 12 month rule which means your pony/horse should have had a booster vaccination

within the last 12 months of his previous one. If you are having to restart the vaccine your pony/horse may attend after the first two, but you can’t compete or attend any Pony Club event, Camps etc within six days of a vaccination. Do not allow your pony/horse to share hay nets, water buckets or to eat the grass at the venue. We would like to thank you for your co-operation and understand this might be frustrating, but the welfare of your horse/pony and others is very important.

JUNIOR CAMP : CHASE FARM Monday 29 July – Friday 2 August 2019

How exciting . . . . . We now have less than 6 weeks to go until Camp! Hopefully your

children are getting excited and you are all getting your ponies FIT for camp. Remember they will be doing 3-4 hrs ridden work a day and are probably not used to this amount of work. We are looking forward to having a fun, full packed week with a few visitors along the way.

Also, a reminder that this will by mine and Claire's last year of running Junior Camp. We are therefore looking for someone to step up and take over. Now would be the perfect time as you will be able to shadow us this year. If you think you might be able to help, but want to find out more, please give me call on 07787 158666. RACHEL FISHER REPORT ON . . . . . . . . . . BADMINTON MITSUBISHI MOTORS CUP 2019

t’s a dream come true . . . . . and I still have to pinch myself but, yes, six weeks ago in early May, I drove to Gloucestershire with my boy Sid (Sidney Rebel) in the lorry polished and bathed (that’s a lot of Elvive purple shampoo for a grey Irish Bog horse) ready to compete in the FINAL of the MITSUBISHI MOTORS CUP.

After four years of trying, an operation to remove a keratoma, many, many lessons and a few weeks of no sleep; the day had finally arrived. Both daughters (Hannah and Danni), Sid and I drove into Badminton Park bursting with excitement. Sid’s accommodation was first class; temporary stables under cover with over 200 other qualified horses. He’s a chilled boy and settled straight in efficiently clearing the foot long grass on his stable floor to make way for the shavings. The first walk of the cross country course gave me a sleepless night but after walking it again with Mary King the next day I felt more confident. It’s much longer than a normal BE90; the optimum time is 7 minutes, with many technical combinations, skinnies and corners. Our dressage test was on the Tuesday and we produced a reasonable test in front of two judges, one at C and one at B, although perhaps a little too relaxed as we were very far down the score board with 35. This has always been our worst phase, so I was pleased to get it done and look forward to the jumping the next day. I walked the course again on my own early Wednesday morning, nailed down my lines into the combinations and stared hard at the last jump, hoping and praying that we would reach that point with Sid still feeling in good shape. As I walked towards Badminton house in the early morning mist, I stopped to watch the 5* horses that had already started arriving for the big event, grazing in hand in front of the house, what a sight; I may have had a small tear in my eye. I show jumped mid-morning, Sid loves to jump so I was surprised when he felt a bit lacklustre in the warm up. However, I need not have worried, the crowds around the arena were apparently terrifying and this sparked him up enough to produce a clear round which meant we could now just go and enjoy the cross country. Waiting in the start box is always exciting but this took us to another level I’M IN THE START BOX ABOUT TO RIDE ROUND BADMINTON! The course flowed beautifully, and Sid felt amazing, some of the more technical combinations had drawn a few crowds which of course, we aren’t used to but Sid took it in his stride and to hear them clap as we rode through was pretty special. As we reached fence 11 Badminton House rises up in front of you and you ride on into the iconic Badminton lake, we jumped out over a big oxer which is dwarfed by a copycat version for the 5*. . . . . frankly huge. We completed 12 seconds under the optimum time - Sid felt great; family and friends were at the finish . . . . . absolutely one of the best experiences of my life. We finished on our dressage score of 35, in the top third of the competition, and we’re now working on that dressage to see if we can up our game and qualify again next year!

DRESSAGE REPORT Suzy Harrison: 01420 538443 - [email protected]

ressage training has been very well attended this spring. Our fantastic instructors have been able to support and improve everyone who has come. Training will continue regularly over the next few months. Look in the ‘Rallies/Events & Booking Forms 2019’

section on the Petersfield Pony Club website and in this newsletter to check what’s on when. We hope to run some training with Nationally recognised Dressage Competitors over the summer, watch out for the dates as spaces will be limited to a first come first served basis. The Area Dressage Qualifiers run by Staff College & Sandhurst Pony Club are on Sunday 7 July at Farley Hill, Berkshire. Petersfield have entered a Grassroots team and 2 Novice teams. Lots of luck to Charlotte, Ella, Isla, Jenny, Danni, Megan, Olivia, Tim, Charlotte, Megan, Georgia and Tegan. The Area 13 Mini Championships, which includes Dressage, is on Sunday 29 September run by Bisley & Sandown Chase Pony Club. Team events are a great opportunity to take part in competitions and participate with other Pony Club members. It is always fun to support and encourage each other. Practicing your riding skills through dressage will improve all your riding from hacking to jumping, so come along to some of the training sessions and you will be getting both yourself and your pony ready for all the summer season has to offer.

The ‘Dressage Divas’ Top Tips

‘The corner is your friend - hug it’ Use the corners to help keep your horse on the bridle and to create a better bend. It will also help increase the activity of the hind leg if you push with the inside leg. Karen Dance

‘To keep your hands still pretend you are pushing a shopping trolley’

Often hands move because the rider is out of balance, and their core is not strong enough to support them. Pushing a heavy shopping trolley is great for core strength and your hands are always pushing forward, never pulling back. This is exact the way we should ride a horse – generating the forwardness with our legs and allowing the horse to work to the contact by pushing forwards with our hands.

So next time Mum takes you shopping, don’t grumble if you have to push the trolley, it’s an effective work out that will really improve your riding! Ruth Bamford

Summer Pole Work Rallies Pole work is where you ride over poles on the ground, or slightly raised poles, to add fun to schooling. It’s like a whole course of trotting poles. It builds suppleness, balance and core stability in you and your pony and can help with rhythm, control, steering and agility. It is a great workout for all disciplines. We have 2 pole work rallies booked in the summer with Ruth Bamford. They are the afternoons of Wednesday 24 July and Monday 19 August in Ruth’s lovely school. These rallies are suitable for anyone happy to canter a circle in a school. The rides will be arranged by pony height to hopefully group together ponies with similar stride lengths. It will be 3 riders for an hour, 2 for 45 mins or 1 rider for 30 mins. Autumn Dressage League 2019 This autumn we will again be running a Dressage League at Highbrook Stables. The tests offered are likely to be Intro, Grassroots, Novice and Intermediate. The schedule will be out later. This is for Petersfield Pony Club members only and will be a low-key opportunity for everyone to practice and gain confidence ready for the 2020 season. If you would like to come and join us we would love to see you; drop me an email and I will add you to the games list. It is always the more the merrier and there is no pressure. You might think now that there is no chance of being able to compete in the games, but you will be surprised what a bit of practice over the winter does. Come along and give it a go.

Finally, a VERY BIG THANK YOU to Wendy Lewis who always gives up so much of her time to train the teams! Mandy Winter

heck out the website: www.pcuk.org/index.php/disciplines/polocrosse/ Polocrosse provides the Pony Club with a team competition requiring courage,

determination and all round riding ability on the part of the rider and careful and systematic training of the pony. It encourages a higher standard of riding through the Pony Club and to stimulate among the future generation a greater interest in riding as a sport and as a recreation. It is suitable for ordinary children on ordinary ponies and encourages a strong and unselfish team spirit.

TETRATHLON & TRIATHLON Lorraine Robinson: 01428 644743 : [email protected]

New Forest Hunts Pony Club – Saturday/Sunday 27-28 April 2019 at New Forest Showground Oliver Chant took part in this two day Tetrathlon competing in the Tadpoles, with a challenging course and weather conditions for the cross country which Oliver completed with a few penalties. The next day his shoot went well (460 and 2nd in the boys), he also did the best boy

swim and came 3rd in the run. His overall place was THIRD which was a really good result and his mixed team came 4th. Hambledon Hunt North Pony Club - Sunday 16 June at Lower Peak Megan Barnes and Hattie Biles took part in the Mini Girls competition in a

mixed team that won, helped by Megan coming FIRST individually with the

best shoot and Hattie came THIRD individually - well done girls. Oliver Chant was in the Munchkin Boys and shot a personal best and ran really

well to come FIFTH individually - great work Oliver! Finally, Evi Clague and Katie Cusack were in the Munchkin Girls in a mixed

team that came third overall. Evi was FIFTH individually and Katie was

EIGHTH - great efforts Evi and Katie. Lovely to see so many getting out competing especially in the recent inclement weather! We have the Area 13 Tetrathlon Qualifiers coming up at the end of June which will be exciting. Later in the summer Hampshire Hunt Pony Club have a lovely event, particularly for younger members on Saturday 14 September. Chiddingfold Pony Club hold their event in October; dates to be confirmed. Do contact Lorraine Robinson if you have any questions about Tetrathlon or Triathlon.
