In order to increase the online security of our residents, staff, and guests, the public access internet connection for Stonehill will require a passphrase beginning August 10. The SSID or network name will still be StonePublic and the passphrase will be welcome in all lower case. All residents, visitors, and staff are welcome to use the wireless network on their personal devices. Login information will also be posted on signs, available at the front desk, and included in the admission packets.

Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services Issues Fines Related to Bed Rails

If you recall, in a previous article we discussed bed rail usage to ensure the safety of residents. This was in response to regulations that took effect last November. I would like to share this information from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services that helps highlight why Stonehill has made changes to the process for use of bed rails.

In March, a health care facility (not Stonehill!) was cited and fined related to the new Bed Rail regulations. The fine was in the amount of $5,250.00 and was withheld from the facility’s Medicare reimbursement. Within the citation, the surveyor cited the facility for failing to assess the bed rails of one resident for the risk of entrapment and for failing to ensure the space between the rail and mattress did not have a gap in which the resident could become entrapped. Thankfully, there were no poor outcomes for this resident; however, the citation and subsequent fine were assessed due to the potential risk.

Stonehill is continuing to assess bed rail use and will continue to have conversations with residents and family members to address the bed rails. Our goal is to evaluate the benefits vs. risks with bed rails to ensure resident safety. As we work through these assessments, your willingness to listen and ask questions is much appreciated!

Thank you!

Stonehill Giving Societies Donor Wall Installed

Have you noticed the new donor wall across from the coffee shop? This three piece wood and glass case display, created by McCullough Creative, showcases the generous supporters in the Stonehill Giving Societies. This is just one way we show our gratitude for this amazing support. These donations help support benevolent care of residents and many projects on campus; most recently the Chapel renovation. For 40 years the kindness of the community has helped Stonehill provide a full continuum of services. These Giving Societies include the Compassionate Care Club, the Stonehill Honor Society, and the Stonehill Legacy Society. Every donation makes a difference and these donors have given at a level that is truly mission sustaining.

For more information on each of these giving societies please visit https://www.stonehilldbq.com/donate/ and click on giving societies from the menu toward the bottom of the page or call me, Amy Schauer, Executive Director of Development at 563-690-9623.

I can’t believe we’re halfway through the summer! We hope all of you are enjoying this relaxing time to do some extra reading, reflecting, and, of course, traveling to visit relatives and friends.

The gift shop volunteers encourage you to “sharpen your little grey cells” by doing puzzles, Jumble, Sudoku, Seek and Find or having fun with an adult coloring book. The gift shop has a variety of these to help you find something you like to do.

We are now in the process of planning our activities for the coming year so if you have a suggestion, please give Linda a call at 588-2578. We always appreciate new ideas!

Happy Anniversary

I’m convinced that the huge redwood tress of California are one of the most awesome blessings of Mother Nature that God has bestowed on this earth. I have on my “bucket list” to one day actually see and touch one of them.

The redwood tress of California are the largest living things on earth and the tallest trees in the world. Some of them are 300 feet high and over 2,500 years old. One would think that trees so large must have a tremendous root system that reaches down hundreds of feet into the earth. But that’s not true. The redwoods actually have very shallow root systems. The redwoods root systems all intertwine. They are all connected and locked to each other.

When the storms come, the winds blow, and the lighting flashes, the redwoods still stand. They are connected together. They are not alone, for all the trees support and protect each other. Each tree is important to all the other trees in the grove. No wonder those trees live so long and are the tallest trees in the world and the largest living things on earth. They are rooted and grounded in a strong support system of one another.

As persons who are a part of the Stonehill community, we are rooted and grounded, just like the redwoods, in a strong support system of one another. Without our common faith connection and care commitment of shared responsibility, we would not survive. The individuals receiving care and support would not grow to remain strong, healthy, and happy persons. They would lack the God-given dignity and respect they deserve and need.

No wonder we continue to live and are hopeful in providing one another with God-given reverence for life, compassion, hospitality, and stewardship. We are rooted and grounded in a shared support system of one another. Each person remains important to all the others within the community of Stonehill.

When the budget gets tight, when cutbacks need to be made, and when we are asked to do and give more with less, we can stand firm. We are grounded

and rooted in strong support of each other, like the redwoods. We are able to stand tall and continue our ministry of care because we support and protect each other from falling down.

Tradition has it that the redwoods of California will never die because they share a common root system that holds them up against any force of nature. Tradition has it that Stonehill, having celebrated its “Happy 40th Anniversary,” will endure because everyone shares a strong faith connection and care commitment that holds us up against failure and defeat.

Let it be our pastoral prayer that our all-powerful, benevolent God will help cultivate the charism of a strong faith commitment and care connection within the group of persons we work with and live among each day. Our future Stonehill anniversaries depend on it.
