Celebrate Independence by Fran Mancl, CNA – Pastoral Care Team Member
The birthday of the United States of America—Independence Day—is celebrated every
year on July 4th. On July 4, 1776, Congress adopted the United States “Declaration of Independ-
ence.” This document’s entire purpose was simply to announce that the 13 American colonies
were now independent from the British Empire.
Independence is a powerful word. It is a wonderful reality to live and experience for eve-
ry human being, including all residents receiving services of care and support at Stonehill.
As caregivers within the community of Stonehill, just think for a moment what independ-
ence means to those who depend on our independence for their activities of daily living. Yes,
our independence becomes their means of independence. Our freedom becomes their means to
experience the freedom to live as they decide they want to live.
Independence means freedom from the control and power of another person or group. It
means that I am a person who is self-determined, self-confident, and self-reliant. How harmful
and hurtful it can be when a person slowly loses their independence and are no longer free to
make choices and decisions that impact their daily life.
In July, seven years ago, my mother learned that she was leaving the nursing home where
she had been for several weeks. She immediately called me to declare her own “Declaration of
Independence”. Her words to me announced that she had gained back her mobility and strength
and was going home. She was celebrating the joy of her independence.
Of course, I was concerned. I knew that my mother would need to depend on the inde-
pendence and freedom of her children and perhaps other caregivers for some of her activities of
daily living. I wasn’t sure mom had the degree of independence she once had yet her joy over
being a self-determined, self-confident, and self-reliant person was very evident. I knew I need-
ed to respect her personal “Declaration of Independence.”
As caregivers, let us appreciate the degree of independence and freedom we each have.
Let us appreciate how our own degree of independence and freedom is shared with others who
do not have it to the degree they desire it. It is in giving and sharing our independence and free-
dom that others are able to live their own life as they decide they want to live it.
If Stonehill would write its own “Declaration of Independence,” the second sentence
might read: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all residents are served with dignity
and respect, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among
these are Hospitality, Compassion, Reverence, and the pursuit of Stewardship.”
Happy Independence Day!

Stonehill Welcomes Fr. Phillip Manesh as our Chaplain Sometime in July, date yet to be determined, we will have new part-time Chaplain join
our staff at Stonehill. He is Fr. Phillip Manesh from Cape Coast Ghana. He has previously
been a pilot with Ghana Armed Forces, as well as: Chaplain, Pastor, and Director of Ghana
Armed Forces over the past four years. He received his doctorate in Ministry at Catholic
Theological Union in Chicago, Il. in 2010. He has also studied and received his Clinical

He will be with us at Stonehill about 50% of his time, splitting pastoral duties with the
