2. A brief cover letter (one page is fine):Briefly introduce yourself. Also include your proposed dates for the internship; when would you be able to arrive to Princeton and when would you plan to complete the internship? 3. Please also enclose a 2 page essay, which answers the following questions:• What about your community service work and participation in the Bonner Program do you find most

fulfilling and challenging?• How have your academic interests, service experiences, and other campus or community activities shaped

your personal development?• What are you still hoping to accomplish during the rest of college? What are your future aspirations?• What hopes or expectations do you have about working at the Bonner Foundation?

4. Finally, enclose your ideas about current Bonner Foundation initiatives. You may do this in writing (a short essay) or in a video:

Take some time to look at the Bonner Network Wiki at http://bonnernetwork.pbworks.com, read through the initiatives listed below. We’re interested in knowing your ideas about some of the key initatives and answer the accompanying questions:

• Student Handbook Live: Summer Interns developed this handbook and typically create new resources for Bonner Programs each year.

- What did you find new or interesting about the Bonner Program from this resource?- Do you have any ideas for additions or other resources you’d like to work on?

• Issues to Impact: Currently, campuses throughout our network are working to incorporate policy research into their programs. Interns may be involved in doing issue briefs.

- What 2-3 issues are you most interested in and why? - What policy questions about these issues intrigue you?

• Serve 2.0 The Bonner Foundation and campuses in our network rely on working via email, websites, wikis, Facebook, videos, and other Web-based tools to share ideas, get and stay connected, and engage others.

- Do you have any ideas about ways that we could better be using social media tools in your own campus program or across the network?

- What social media tools are you most comfortable using currently? What tools may you be interested in learning to use more?

Ad%tional FAQs

Who can be a Summer Intern?Any Bonner Scholar or Leader can be a summer intern with the Foundation. The position is open to all Bonners.

What does an Intern do?Summer Interns work at the Bonner Foundation, dedicating the majority of their time to a project, which they collaboratively arrange with staff. Interns in the past have devoted time to researching and improving the organization of Bonner Congress, writing resources and curricula, planning and implementing the Congress and Senior Intern tracks for Summer Leadership Institute, designing the Bonner Network Wiki and Student Handbook, creating new videos, and researching related policy issues. These are just some examples; the Foundation staff tries to match interns’ interests and talents with current initiatives.

What will I gain from the Internship? You will gain leadership skills, networking, and professional skills. You will work primarily in an office setting, gaining a wide array of organizational and project design skills. You will work independently and with a team on your project. Having or gaining skills in working in a professional office setting (time management, administrative work, writing) is important. You will become familiar with the northeast, having easy (train) access to the greater New York-Philadelphia-DC region. You will be immersed in the culture of a non-profit foundation and our partners. You will learn the behind-the-scenes plans and processes that the Foundation and Bonner Network are engaged in to run successful programs.

When should I send my application? You should submit your information to the Foundation by Friday, March 19, 2010. You may submit your application earlier if you’d like. Also, you can be in touch with Ariane Hoy ([email protected] or (609) 924-6663) before that time, to talk about the opportunity as well as work out other details. This will give the Foundation ample time to review your proposal and respond, providing you and the Foundation both with time enough for early planning.

What happens if my application is accepted?Once your application is accepted, it is important that you continue communicating with the Foundation through the remainder of the semester to ensure that all arrangements are made prior to your arriving in Princeton.

When do Interns begin and end work? Are interns paid?Summer Interns are encouraged to begin their work directly proceeding the end of the school year. This enables interns to play a role in the planning and implementation of the Summer Leadership Institute. Interns generally work with the Foundation for seven weeks in the summer, for a total of 280 hours. Interns work daily from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., with an hour (unpaid) provided for lunch. Interns are paid an hourly rate; in addition, you may be able to arrange the use of your Bonner funding (work/living stipend) from your campus.

Where do Interns work?Summer Interns work primarily at the Bonner Foundation, located in Princeton, NJ. In addition, travel to and from Summer Leadership Institute (in this case the 20th Anniversary, held at Berea College from June 2-6) is also expected and will be paid for by the foundation. There may be other opportunities throughout the summer for work-related travel as well, depending on your course of work, for example to talk with Bonner Partner organizations.

Where do Interns live?Unfortunately, the Foundation does not provide housing. Summer Interns of the Bonner Foundation have to find housing and pay for it (from your stipend), but we will help you connect with possibilities. We recommend using Craigslist (www.craigslist.org - Central Jersey), talking to Foundation staff, or connecting with students in the NJ area (Rider, Middlesex, TCNJ - try on Facebook).

Why does the Foundation have Interns in the summer?Summer Interns provide a student voice at the Foundation during the summer. Students are diligent and responsible workers, self-motivated and truly interested in the long-lasting success of the Bonner Program. Interns work alongside the President and other Foundation Staff, providing a diverse body of organizers, ensuring that the connection is maintained between the Bonner Foundation and campus programs.
