Thanks to Nia and Eric Hartman for hosting our first Home Party since before the pandemic! The 28 members who came enjoyed visiting in the front and rear patios, while barbequing their own entrée and enjoying other food that people brought to share. We ended the evening with an extreme skiing movie on the big screen in the back yard.

Let’s Party!

Let’s Keep in Shape!

Paddle Day Our last paddling outing of the summer will be on Sunday morning, September 12th. Join fellow club members on the water when Gena Lighthouse leads us through Huntington Harbor on kayaks or paddle boards. Meet at OEX Sunset Beach (16910 Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington/Sunset Beach) by 8:45 am. Allow time to find parking and bring a mask to wear while you are not separated out on the water. Bring your own, or rent a single kayak or SUP for $20 for two hours. Don’t forget a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses, sun screen and water. We’ll have an optional outdoor lunch together afterwards. Mt. Hollywood Summit Hike Our last recreational outing of the off-season will be on Sunday, October 17. We will meet at 10:00 am at the parking lot located above The Trails Café in Griffith Park where Homer Barar will lead us on a moderate 5-mile hike with a 1000’ gain. There is a shorter option for beginners, which Homer will explain before beginning the hike, with time to explore the beautiful grounds of the Griffith Observatory until the rest of the group returns from the summit. The main group will continue on trails that alternate from moderate to moderately steep, where we will be rewarded with an expansive view of the greater Los Angeles at the Summit, stretching all the way to Catalina on a clear day. Stay for an optional brunch at The Trails Café in a natural setting under the tall trees. Directions to parking lot where we meet: Go to 2333 Fern Dell Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90068. Then continue uphill on Fern Dell Dr. for another .2 miles to the stop sign. Turn left to enter the parking lot. Parking is free.

The trip package does NOT include lift tickets. IKON pass holders can use their pass, if it is the full pass. If you have the IKON Base Pass (the one with blackout dates), you must upgrade your pass to Base Pass Plus which can only be done by phone 888-365 4566(IKON). IKON Base Pass Plus will give you 5 days of skiing at Jackson Hole. If you are going on this trip and want to upgrade your pass, do it today. The cost is currently $150 to upgrade but they may increase the cost this fall, so upgrade now. Fill out your Reservation Request, sign the Waiver of Liability, and send in your deposit or bring all to the Wednesday General Meeting at Ecco’s Pizza. Contact VP Week Trips Eric Hartman with questions at 562-533-7205. TRIP INSURANCE QUESTIONS Some members have expressed concern over the current and future COVID status and possibility of trip cancellation. The LBSC will try to recover all costs if a trip has to be cancelled for all members on the trip due to shut downs related to the COVID pandemic, or other situations causing cancellation of the week trip by the club. However, LBSC cannot guarantee recovery of all costs. This was the case for the Italy trip. Travel Insurance is not a part of the week trip travel package. LBSC members should purchase insurance if they are concerned about not being able to recover all costs resulting from their personal need to cancel or from a mass cancellation of the trip by the LBSC. Be very careful when purchasing travel insurance as it may or may not cover pandemic/epidemic situations. Read the fine print of the insurance you thinking of purchasing and speak directly with the insurance company (but get it in writing). Insurance can be purchased with some form of “Trip Cancellation for Any Reason” (aka CFAR) type coverage. CFAR should cover most of the situations discussed. CFAR coverage usually can be purchased as an add-on to the premium plans. Travel insurance also typically covers cancellation due to car accidents, illness or injury where your doctor does not allow travel. It should be noted that if you do get sick and have to cancel, most insurance would likely cover that. Traveler age will greatly affect the cost of the coverage and insurance is cheaper if purchased now rather than later. Again, LBSC is not purchasing travel insurance for its members for this trip and it is up to the LBSC member that wishes insurance to purchase their own insurance with the coverage they need.

Ski Area Information In addition to Jackson Hole, there are two other ski areas that are close by: Snow King and Grand Targhee. Snow King is the local ski area which also has a roller coaster that is operated during the winter. It is about one mile away and can be reached by the local bus system which is free. Grand Targhee Resort is on the western side of the local mountain range and is about 45 miles away. Grand Targhee can be reached through the GTR shuttle and I do not know yet what the cost will be. Last year, lift tickets for Snow King were around $70 per day and Grand Targhee were about $105 per day. The Jackson Hole Trip Flier, Reservation Request and Liability Waiver is attached to this Ski Breeze. Reservations may also be made on the club website.
