The Road to Wing Ding 2018...Interesting Facts about Knoxville.

It is also called the "Marble City." Although in reality, what is called marble here is actually limestone! The University of Tennessee was established to be called so, only in 1879. It was originally founded as Blount College in 1794.

Chapter Director’s Report Welcome to April, the official start of riding season (at least on my calendar). I can’t speak for everyone, but my “official” start of riding season is when the first ice cream ride appears on the calendar. This year April 4th marks the date and we already have our first trip planned to Spring Fling in Pigeon Forge, TN the following week. I am planning to leave the Flying J in Walton on Thursday, April 12th at 9 am. For those who would like to meet for breakfast first, I will be at the Denny’s restaurant at the Flying J at 8 am. I am pretty sure I even know what I’ll be eating for breakfast, but I won’t bore you by telling you that it will probably be Moons Over My Hammy and hash browns, but who cares what I plan to eat? Please let me know if you plan to ride with me, so that I won’t leave without you. I’m sure there will be some members leaving at different times, so please do not feel like you have to ride down with me. Like I said at the March gathering, this is your time, so please do not feel any pressure to stay with any particular group or do anything while we are there that you don’t really want to do. The main objective is for everyone to have fun, so please, have fun and do whatever you want to do. I mentioned an idea of having a “Members Moment” at future gatherings where you, the members, would have the opportunity to speak to the chapter about anything motorcycle, or ride related. I asked that you get with me or Leah ahead of the gathering time to let us know that you would like to speak so that we could put you on the agenda. We do our best to keep the gatherings at 1 hour, so we will have to limit the time to just a couple of minutes and only one or two members per gathering. This will be done on a trial basis, so please let us know what you think. It was great to see our Membership Enhancement Coordinators, Jerry and Luanne Williams, have so much to do at the March gathering by introducing Jeff and Vanessa Ferrell, who have been GWRRA members since 2010, and recently moved to northern Kentucky from Florida. It didn’t stop there, as we also had two visitors present, John and Mary Eicher, who recently purchased a brand new 2017 Gold Wing that they hadn’t even taken delivery of. I am very pleased to be able to offer an update there. John rode his shiny new wing home on Saturday, March 17th and sent me a message informing that he and Mary joined GWRRA as well. Welcome Jeff, Vanessa, John, and Mary. We hope to see a lot more of you! Like I said, the first ice cream ride is on April 4th. I am hoping for two things for that day. First that Mother Nature cooperates, and second that I see all of you there ready to ride. Stay safe!

Treasurer’s Report Congratulations to our winners from the March Get –Together!! Pete Heiss won the $10 membership draw this month. Deward Brake won 1st place of $25, Vanessa Ferrell (GWRRA member who transferred her membership from Florida to Chapter G – we are thrilled – welcome!!) won 2nd place of $15 and Chuck Norris won 3rd place of $10. Thank you to all who participated at the March gathering. I want to thank Dean and Kim Hedger for doing a great job as always selling tickets!! If it wasn’t for Dean/Kim selling our tickets and our wonderful members/guests, we wouldn’t have the opportunity to do the fun events that we do each year – THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

Awards Women! Who needs them? Those are the immortal words of our former Chapter Director, Tom Dierig; as he concluded, we all do. After the February meeting when I presented the annual awards, I was approached by Charlie Thornton who suggested that the Chapter recognize our co-riders more. Co-riders have won The Chapter SWAG Award the last 3 years

but that is all. Charlie believes we should recognize them in more ways. I agree, but how? The simple answer would be to have participation awards for co-riders, but is that enough? The coordinators don’t have all the answers and are open for suggestions. If you have one, send me an email at [email protected] or tell me at a meeting or ride. And don’t forget to advise me of your beginning mileage for the year if you haven’t done so already so we get the year started off right.

Rider Education That Motorcycle Vision Thing

A “visionary” is someone who has the ability to evaluate current information, use it to project likely developments in the future, and take effective action today to manage future events and avoid having those events manage them. Former President George H.W. Bush famously referred to this ability as the “Vision Thing.” And the Vision Thing also can apply to riding a motorcycle.

Anyone who has taken the Basic Rider Course knows a motorcycle goes where you look, and effective cornering depends on a rider “looking through” the curve. But in many ways, that only scratches the surface of the “Motorcycle Vision Thing” for riders.

Focusing your sight on the proper “primary” and “secondary” targets is important both to achieving a smooth and effective riding technique and mitigating the dangers incumbent in riding a motorcycle on the street. Primary targets are those of the highest priority, and they demand a rider’s immediate, primary focus. Secondary targets, on the other hand, should be monitored by a rider’s secondary focus, or peripheral vision. For example, when a rider suddenly detects a pothole or other road hazard in his or her peripheral vision, that hazard should, immediately, become a primary target. But instead of fixating on that hazard, the rider should visualize and focus on the best path to avoid it. After the danger has passed, riders should then refocus their attention to the new primary target (i.e., the one with the highest priority).

In the absence of an immediate threat, riders generally should focus as far down the road as their sightline allows, but also keep their eyes roving 360 degrees (by using their mirrors) to detect potential dangers. The farther ahead you focus, the easier it is for your brain to process what you are seeing. It’s as if your bike’s forward motion is progressing at a slower pace. Focusing closer to the front wheel makes the activities being processed by the brain seem to be happening much faster. This often results in jerky rider inputs through the handlebars, brakes, and throttle and less time to detect and avoid hazards.

Let’s consider another example of how this riding technique should work. When riding in a group, particularly if it’s tightly packed, there’s a tendency for riders to focus on the motorcycle directly in front of them, making it their primary target. Because the following rider is not focusing on the road ahead, he or she is constantly braking, accelerating, and erratically executing corners. If, instead, the road becomes the following rider’s primary focus, and the other riders ahead are placed in peripheral vision, the following rider will be smoother and safer.

A rider can practice sharpening up their peripheral vision even when they’re not riding. For example, while walking down a sidewalk, try to pick out details in your surroundings without looking at them directly. With a little practice, riders can master the Motorcycle Vision Thing and improve their riding technique and safety. Technical Educator Report The front suspension of our Honda Goldwing is often called the front forks. A combination of mechanical springs and hydraulic damping, this simple appearing design is responsible for controlling the front tire, no matter how fast it is travelling or how uneven the surface over which it must roll. And this is quite the task! Consider a motorcycle, like say, a Honda Goldwing, travelling down the road at 60 miles per hour, or 88 feet per second. If the bike runs over some debris like a small stick, the suspension must allow the tire to move up and down to go over that stick. If the stick is one half inch in diameter, the suspension must allow the front tire, wheel, brake rotors, brake callipers, speedometer gear, fork sliders (the bottom half), fender, and any additional lights and chrome pieces to move up and down one half inch, while never letting the tire leave the road. Seems simple, but all those pieces I just named may weigh 50 pounds or more, and in this example must do all of this moving in less than 0.0005 seconds. Still think this is simple? Hold a five pound bag of sugar with both hands and try moving it exactly one half inch up and down as fast as you can, in complete control. Now repeat that motion for one hour, like the front forks do when you ride down the highway. Think it is simple now? Don’t believe the tire moves that much on the road? Ask a friend to go riding and, on a deserted road with unlimited visibility and no other potential dangers, ride alongside his front wheel and observe what is does.

In the heart of the front fork is an often overlooked fluid that is responsible for the smooth operation of the entire assembly. Some dirt and water will inevitably get past the seals, and the bushings that separate the slider from the stanchion (the upper part) do wear over time, and all this stuff ends up in the fork oil. This oil must travel through very small orifices in the dampening rods eliminate a pogo stick effect in the front end. Yet for the Honda Goldwing the factory has never specified a maintenance interval for changing the fork oil.

Based on my research and my own personal experience, I would recommend changing the fork oil every 10,000 to 20,000 miles, or every three to four years, depending on your riding characteristics. If you have never done it, now is the time. You might just be amazed at how smoothly the forks will operate. I know that after I drained the black goo from my forks, I no longer had a tire cupping problem.

Pins & Patches Gold Wingers- It's almost riding season! Is your bike ready? Tires? Brakes? Do you need something to wear? The Chapter has a LOT of rides planned this year, so make sure that you and your bike are ready! The warmer weather is just around the corner. After a long winter, it's time to go riding! A new shirt may be just the ticket. See me and we'll take care of that... Don't forget to wear hearing protection - once it's gone, it's gone and you'll never get it back. Ride safe; there are WAY too many distracted cage drivers out there. Safe Travels

“If I had my life to live over...

Someone asked me the other day if I had my life to live over would I change anything. My answer was no, but then I thought about it and changed my mind. If I had my life to live over again I would have waxed less and listened more. Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy and complaining about the shadow over my feet, I'd have cherished every minute of it and realized that the wonderment growing inside me was to be my only chance in life to assist God in a miracle. I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed. I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained and the sofa faded. I would have eaten popcorn in the "good" living room and worried less about the dirt when you lit the fireplace. I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth. I would have burnt the pink candle that was sculptured like a rose before it melted while being stored. I would have sat cross-legged on the lawn with my children and never worried about grass stains. I would have cried and laughed less while watching television ... and more while watching real life. I would have shared more of the responsibility carried by my husband which I took for granted.

I would have eaten less cottage cheese and more ice cream.

I would have gone to bed when I was sick, instead of pretending the Earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren't there for a day. I would never have bought ANYTHING just because it was practical/wouldn't show soil/ guaranteed to last a lifetime. When my child kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, "Later. Now, go get washed up for dinner." There would have been more I love yous ... more I'm sorrys ... more I'm listenings ... but mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute of it ... look at it and really see it ... try it on ... live it ... exhaust it ... and never give that minute back until there was nothing left of it.” ― Erma Bombeck, Eat Less Cottage Cheese and More Ice Cream: Thoughts on Life from Erma Bombeck

Editor’s Notes

Erma Bombeck has forever been my favorite author, (well, her and Dr. Seuss) for so many reasons. She really saw life for what it was and I do believe, given the chance, she would have ridden a bike and joined GWRRA. Chapter “G” embodies that spirit. The time has come my Winger Pals. The roads are clear, the weather is warming, and the ice cream is ready!!! It’s time to get out and enjoy it! Ride safe and HAVE FUN!

Hysterical Historical Highlights Congratulations to our members who are celebrating their

April Chapter G anniversaries!

We did it! Although we mumbled and grumbled through the cold, snow, and ice,

We made it to our favorite time of year … days that are warm, and sunny, and nice.

So “G” bikers and co-riders are excited now … and more than eager to ride,

For they endured too long of a winter … with their bikes covered or parked inside!

Now as we celebrated Easter we were reminded … to be thankful for our blessings,

And we survived the April Fool’s Day tricksters … who enjoyed keeping us guessing.

So it’s time to hit the highways and byways … and get to “doing” our fun “G” thing,

By heading down to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee … to officially celebrate Spring Fling!

But, before leaving, we want to thank members … who are special to both you and me,

For choosing the month of April … to join us for some riding and fun at the “G”!

Marilyn Elam came in ’98 … and still loves riding (and camping!) … they get her excited,

And when J.R. and Pam Robinson came in 2001 … we were all simply delighted!

Then two years later, Tom Dierig joined us … and loves riding despite the weather,

As long as he’s dressed appropriately … and wearing enough layers of leather!

Now riding has been taking up some of his time and his 3 grandchildren even more,

And before long (in fact, it may have already happened!) they’re expecting grandbaby 4!

Then 2007 brought us the Wallace’s … Melanie, along with Greg, her biker guy,

How thankful we at Chapter G should be … when friendly members like these stop by.

Then in 2011 the Keiter’s came, both John and Karen, who’ve become friends so dear,

They’re such fun … and such world travelers … it brings us joy when they are here!

Back in ’08 the Heil’s came to their first “G” meeting … Raven, Gary, and Darlene,

And a sweeter family just doesn’t exist … I’m sure you understand what I mean.

However, Gary … Tom Dierig said … he plays golf with you and doesn’t find it amusing,

Because to tell you the truth … week after week … he’s getting sick and tired of losing!!!
