Opening ceremonies at 9 a.m.; auction at 10:30 a.m. withproceeds going to roof fund

The 130th annual Hayes Township Scheutzen Verein King Shoot will take place Sunday, June 2, at the Five Mile House, south of Westside.

The event will begin with opening ceremonies at 9 a.m. with an auction at 10:30 a.m. to raise money for a new roof for the Five Mile House.

Scheutzen Verein chairman Troy Gehlsen stated that, with a $6,500 grant from the Crawford County Com-munity Foundation, a new roof is less than $5,000 away.

“If we have a good auction and a good day, we can fund the new roof,” he said.

The event continues with lunch, pro-vided by this year’s king, Greg Oeser, of Westside, at 11:30 a.m.

The marksmanship contest will begin at 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. and will deter-mine the king for 2014.

At 5 p.m., the event will conclude with the coronation of the 2014 king and queen.

The queen is selected by a contest where contestants toss softballs into buckets.

This year’s queen is Allison Ehlers, Westside.

From 9 a.m. to mid-afternoon, par-ticipants will be entertained by the Wendinger Band, a polka group from New Ulm, Minnesota.

The king shoot provides a way for area citizens to celebrate the rich Ger-man heritage of Crawford County. The Scheutzen Verein, German for “shoot-ing club”, is just one of two remaining in Crawford County.

The annual event is attended by guests throughout the region, includ-ing members of the German American Heritage Society of Omaha, Nebraska.

“They are an awesome, great group of people. They have a ball here. It’s a lot of fun to have them,” Gehlsen said.

Five shows in this year’s Stone Pier Summer Concert Series atLake ViewBlackhawk Lake is backdrop for free concerts

The popular Stone Pier Summer Concert Series is returning for its third season in 2013.

With beautiful Blackhawk Lake as its backdrop in Lake View, the series of five shows draws hundreds of spectators from across the region who enjoy live music and the laid-back lake lifestyle.

The Oak Creek Band headlines the series on July 6. The unique five-piece ensemble from Nashville, Ten-nessee, brings an eclectic sound all their own, with soaring harmonies and addictive melodies inspired by Americana, rock and indie-pop.

The Candymakers will also make their first-ever ap-pearance in the concert series on Saturday, August 10. Winners of the Iowa Blues Challenge in 2011 and semi-finalists in the 2012 International Blues Chal-lenge, the six-piece band from Davenport is a respect-ed group of talented and technical musicians.

The Andy Gibson Band will play the only Sunday show in the series as they perform as part of the com-munity’s third annual Rock & Run event on Sunday, September 1. The high-energy band from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is comprised of five talented musicians playing a combination of country, Top 40 rock and original music.

The Cover Girls, a unique all-girl cover band from Des Moines, will play the Series on Saturday, June 22, covering music that ranges from 1950s girl band tunes to hip hop songs of today. They will be paired with The High Crest, a group from Des Moines that performs original songs with soulful harmony.

The 2013 Series will kick off with a double billing on Saturday, June 1, when returning favorites King of The Tramps and The Young Funk take the Stone Pier stage.

It will be a local release party for King Of The Tramps who will be celebrating the debut of their sophomore album, Wicked Mountain. Both bands are packed with local talent and have been big supporters of the series since it began in 2011.

All shows begin at 6 p.m. and run until dusk. Lis-teners are encouraged to bring blankets or camp chairs for seating in the natural outdoor amphithe-atre setting.

Food and merchandise will be available for sale and proceeds support the concert series. The concerts are free to all attendees with the help of many sponsors, including Presenting Sponsor Poet Biorefining-Gow-rie.

New formatfor children’s summer reading program at Norelius CommunityLibrary

The summer reading program at the Norelius Commu-nity Children’s Library in Denison will feature a new format but will still provide kids with entertainment through reading.

This year, children do not have to officially sign up for the program.

From June 1 to July 31, kids can visit the children’s library to acquire prizes.

The theme for this year’s program is “Dig Into Reading”.

On the first visit, students in pre-kindergarten to fifth grade will be given a plastic book bag.

The second visit will earn children a small prize and on the third visit they will receive a pass for the Blank Park Zoo.

On the fourth visit, students will win the grand prize of a free book.

Prizes can be earned by visiting the children’s li-brary to check out a book, play on a computer or at-tend a program.

“We thought this would get more kids involved and it’s simple for the families,” said children’s librarian Joanne Neemann.

For more information, contact Neemann at the li-brary at 712-263-9355. Hit the trail to help raise money and awareness for a dis-

ease that has effected the lives of children throughout Iowa as well as the United States.

Trottin’ for Taylor, the annual horse ride to help fight ju-venile Batten’s Disease, takes off from the Crawford County Fairgrounds at 7 a.m. on Saturday, June 1, and proceeds to Ute.

Participants will then gather at Ute Town and Country at 4:30 p.m. for a free-will donation dinner.

A memorial display for children, like the ride’s namesake and Batten Disease patient Taylor Mohr, will honor children who have battled or are currently fighting severe illnesses.

A dance will wrap up Saturday night. Participants are invited to rise early for breakfast from 7

to 9 a.m. followed by Cowboy Church at 9 a.m., conducted by Randy Reasoner of McCloud, Oklahoma.

The rest of Sunday will be celebrated with horse games, children’s games, musical chairs, a poker run and other games and activities.

The ride’s founder, Tami Mohr, explained this year’s for-mat was shortened from a trip across Iowa to a two day event but will still fully celebrate the life of her grandson, Taylor.

She has used her previous rides to network across the state and has recruited a following of compassionate indi-viduals dedicated to raise money and awareness for Tay-lor’s condition.

Guests this year will include Dr. Beverly Davidson, a lab-oratory director at the University of Iowa who has earned recognition as a leader in Batten Disease research, and some of Davidson’s associates.

Each penny raised during the ride will be given to David-son’s team to continue research.

The event is open to anyone who wants to ride. No ad-vance registration is required.

For more information, contact Mohr at 712-269-1461 or visit the Trottin’ for Taylor Facebook page at www.face-book.com/Trottin’-For-Taylor.
