Day Camp Programs for 3- to 13-year-olds

Royal Botanical Gardens’ Discovery Day Camps are about fun, education and respect set in one of the most biologically diverse natural areas in Canada. We provide hands-on, environmental and education based programs that suit the ages, needs and interests of our participants. These award-winning programs feature hikes, canoeing in Cootes Paradise, games, crafts, activities and daily explorations of ecologically signifi cant nature sanctuaries covering over 1,000 hectares of wetlands, fi elds and forests. Our goal is to introduce your child to a lifetime of respect andappreciation for the natural world that sustains us all.

Half-day programs for 3- and 4-year-oldsThese daily, 2.5-hour programs (9:30 a.m. until 12 p.m.) introduce young children to the wonders of the outdoors and allow them to experience many different aspects of our day camp programs. These programs take place at RBG Centre in Room 3 and make use of the natural and garden areas locatednearby. A full-day program is also available for 4- and 5-year-old children. Allparticipants must be toilet trained.

Nature ExplorersDiscover caterpillars and butterfl ies hiding in the garden, hand-feed chickadees and chipmunks while on our nature trails, search for reptiles and birds, view the world through a bug’s eyes and visit the homes of all sorts of animals. Get your hands dirty as we search out crazy creatures, fi nd playful plants and discover life in the great outdoors. Play, explore, craft and ramblealong all while being amazed by the creativity and wonder of Mother Nature.

Family Day for Half-Day Camps Camp is a new experience for our youngest visitors,and we understand that some children may not feel comfortable their fi rst day. If your child is registered in our camp for 3- and 4-year-olds, be sure to join us on Monday* for family day. As aparent or caregiver, you are invited to join us forthe program so that that you and your family can see what camp is all about, discover the wonders of nature and ease any worries.

* This event takes place on Tuesday, July 2 andTuesday, August 6 following holiday Mondays.

Dinosaurs! Weeks 1, 4 and 7Explore the fascinating and the ferocious as we have some giant-sized fun during this week all about dinosaurs! RBG hosted Battle of the Titans, a dinosaur exhibit in winter 2013, and we’re still in the spirit. Crafts, games, hikes, canoeing and exploration wait for us as we dig for and discover these magnifi cent giants and their living relatives. If you’ve ever wondered about or been amazed by these great creatures, this week is for you!

Creature Craze Weeks 2, 5 and 8 Join us for a great week all about the fascinating creatures of the earth, seaand sky. Campers discover the crazy, the weird and the downright wonderful world of animals through games, stories that come to life, zany crafts, interactive nature walks and great environmental activities. Come meet andlearn how to protect friendly feathered friends, camoufl aged critters and funkyfl yers. Join a camp where the fun never ends!

RBG’s Wide World of Nature Weeks 3, 6 and 9 Through nature walks, canoeing around Cootes Paradise Marsh and lots of funeco-games, come explore and help protect the beautiful forests, fi elds and wildlife sanctuaries of RBG. Come along as we hike, play great games, makesome cool crafts and become amazed by the creativity and wonder of Mother Nature’s fragile beauty. Explore our world from the familiar to the unusual andfi nd out why plants, animals, weather and conservation play such animportant role in our lives.

Green Kids Weeks 1, 4 and 7Do you love nature and spending your days outdoors in a beautiful forest coming up with ways to save the planet? Do you love interesting animals andfascinating plants and helping them live? If you do, then this camp is for you! Join us for exciting games, fantastic nature hikes, explorations of Cootes Paradise Marsh in canoes and involvement in projects that have a positive impact on the future of over 40 species at risk that live on RBG property and the planet at large. Learn, play and enjoy this week as you become as green as you can be!

Animal Wonders Weeks 2, 5 and 8Explore the huge, the tiny, the bizarre and the remarkable world of animals.Discover caterpillars and butterfl ies hiding in the garden, hand-feed chickadees and chipmunks while on our nature trails, search for reptiles and birds using binoculars and view the world through bug eyes. This program has been specially designed for high-energy, hands-on learners interested indiscovering the world of animals through entertaining and exciting activities.

Young Naturalists Weeks 3, 6 and 9 Explore the natural world of birds, bugs, plants, weather, cycles and everythingthat lives and exists in your own backyard. The 27 kilometres of nature trails that crisscross 971 hectares (2,450 acres) of forest and wetlands make RBG the perfect setting for hands-on discovery of the diversity of our natural surroundings. Learn to observe and understand the connections and relationships that make up our special lands by hiking, canoeing and of course, playing lots of games.

Outdoor Adventures Weeks 1, 4 and 7 Back by popular demand! Get the most out of the outdoors during these days of discovery, environmental appreciation and outdoor adventures. With activegames and environmental awareness, these days offer the best of what RoyalBotanical Gardens Discovery Camps are famous for.

The Science of Nature Weeks 2, 5 and 8 Back by popular demand! Come out as we explore the interactions,connections and fascinating lives of plants and animals from our forests, fi eldsand marshes. RBG is a biodiversity hot spot that includes close to 1,200 wild plant species, 277 different kinds of birds, 29 types of mammals, 68 species of fi sh, 13 species of reptiles and 9 types of amphibians. Enjoy in-depth nature walks, canoeing, eco-adventures and environmental games during this weekof amazing investigations. Just imagine the possibilities!

Eco-Explorers New Weeks 3, 6 and 9Uncover the secrets of ecosystems and explore our fragile natural world. Through games, activities, hikes and participation in active conservation effortsand projects, campers get an up-close experience in conservation, investi gation and fun! Our living laboratory provides you the perfect opportunity to get to know the plant and animal species that make up our bioregion and how we can protect them. Venture Quest Weeks 1, 4 and 7Spend this extremely popular week exploring RBG’s 2,700 acres of natural lands through all-day hikes on our fascinating and (sometimes) challenging nature trails, extended canoe outings throughout Cootes Paradise and adventurous games that challenge the way you see the great outdoors. This camp includeshikes up to 8 kilometres long and canoe excursions lasting up to 3 hours; participants should be physically capable of taking part in such activities.

A Living Laboratory New Weeks 2, 5 and 8 The forests and wetlands habitats that make up RBG are known as Canada’sbiodiversity hot spot, with close to 1/4 of Canada’s wild plant species found growing wild here. Investigate, explore and discover the patterns of life in these habitats as we delve into the sciences of our natural world. From life ina drop of water to the world of the cosmos, join us as we go on outdoor adventures, play games and get our hands dirty to uncover the mysteries of life all around.

Mission: Nature Survival Weeks 3, 6 and 9 One of our most popular camps, Mission: Nature Survival is back for another year! Learn the ropes as you spend the week outside learning how to use the natural surroundings to your benefi t. Build a shelter, get water from a tree andhave a blast “surviving” the great outdoors. Games, canoeing and hikes round out this week of team building, co-ordination and skill.

Overnight Camp-Out for 8- to 9- and 10- to 13-year-olds On Thursday nights, the 8- to 9- and 10- to 13-year-olds camp programs offer an overnight camp experience for registered campers. This is a great opportunityto explore the forest at night and experience a camp-out in a safe and fun atmosphere. Overnight accommodation is in waterproof, nylon tents. Leadersare in adjacent tents and campers are supervised at all times. Participantssleep indoors in the event of inclement weather or extreme heat. Participantsreceive a packing list and scheduling information upon arrival at camp.

• The overnight program for 8- to 9-year-old campers is an additional $35 (you may register for this on your application form or while at camp).

• The overnight program fee is included in the 10- to 13-year-old campregistration and is non-refundable.

• The overnight fee includes healthy meals and snacks for the evening and the following day.

• 8- to 9-year-old campers who do not register for the overnight need to bring a healthy and nut-safe lunch and snacks for the Friday.

• 10- to 13-year-old campers who do not sleep over will have healthy meals and snacks provided for the Friday.

Garden Explorers Camps for 5- to 8-year-oldsThese fun, environmental education-based programs introduce children to the joy of the outdoors and the delight of gardening. Plant, maintain and enjoy your garden plot while we hike, play games, craft and canoe our way through ecologically signifi cant nature sanctuaries and a multitude of beautiful gardens. These programs take place at RBG Centre in Room 5 and make use of the natural and garden areas available out our back door. All programs include daily outdoor activities, canoeing on Thursday and Friday, and occasional crafts. Programs are created age and stage appropriately for children within the listed age group.

Burst into Bloom Weeks 1, 4 and 7From small fl owers to towering trees, the world is full of strange andwonderful plants. Royal Botanical Gardens offers an enormous array of gardens, greenhouses and natural lands waiting to be explored. If you haveever loved a garden or a green space, this week of fun games, crafts, garden outings, planting and outdoor adventures is for you!

Art in the Garden Weeks 2, 5 and 8This hands-on program introduces the joys of creativity in gardening, growing and of course, art! Campers have the opportunity to paint, draw, create and explore the numerous gardens, visit with professional gardeners, play cool games, create with plants and plant your own seeds, fl owers and fun!

Nature’s Gardens Weeks 3, 6 and 9The world is at your fi ngertips this week as we explore the plants of this great planet we call home. Biomes and ecosystems fi lled with strange and unique plants await your exploration and cultivation. Through games, crafts, outdoor journeys, garden visits and plantings, hikes and hands-on environmentalactivities, everyone will leave with a green thumb.

Food, Friends and Fun Weeks 1, 5, 6 and 8RBG Centre; ages 6 to 9Back by popular demand! From garden to table … discover food the way Mother Nature intended it to be! Kids delight in getting their hands dirty, both in the gardenand in the kitchen and go home with a recipe book at the end of the week. Developed by a naturopathic doctor and a nutritionist, this camp program incorporates food education with whole body health including group activities for exercise and relaxation. Let your kids discover the FUN in healthy and balanced living!

Leadership DevelopmentThese fun and educational programs are designed to develop leadership and

p pp plife skills. Through hands-on cooperative activities, participants explore and learn about teamwork, problem solving, communication and leadership.Develop skills that will help you in every aspect of life and have a great time being part of a dynamic team. Learn more about yourself and others while gaining valuable work experience and becoming more skilled at working with children in an educational environment. All participants are required to attend a pre-camp training session in order to qualify for these programs.

Leader in Training 13- to 15-year-oldsToo old for camp, but love the experience? Develop leadership, communication, self-confi dence and group management skills through training sessions, hands-on activities and workshops led by our Leadership Development Team. Learnhow to successfully lead games and crafts, capture the attention of campersand fi nd out how to make learning fun through motivation and co-operation.Leaders in training are mentored by camp leaders and are expected to assist infacilitating day camp programs.

Junior Staff 14-year-olds +Have the fun of summer camp but reap the benefi ts of being a leader! Workwith an enthusiastic staff team who share a common interest and learn more about the environment, camping and working with children. Work side-by-sidewith counselling staff in program planning and execution. Junior staff learn to care for children in an educational setting through training, job shadowing and supported leadership activities. Junior staff lead games, crafts, create andbrainstorm activities and facilitate camp programs. Acceptance into thisprogram is based on leadership experience, teamwork and fl exibility as well asa sense of initiative and a willingness to learn new skills. Participants receive anhonourarium for their time. Participants are required to make a minimum six-week commitment (plus mandatory staff training).

MAXIMUM 15 PARTICIPANTS

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR JUNIOR STAFF

• 14 years of age or older

• Leadership experience (i.e. babysitting, Scout/Guide helper, sports captain,previous Royal Botanical Gardens leadership training)

• Teamwork skills and fl exibility; self-initiative and willingness to learn

• Minimum commitment of six weeks

• Preference given to those who have First Aid, CPR, canoe skills, experienceworking with children in an organized environment, a demonstrated interest in outdoor education/environmental science, pure science or teaching or thosewho have participated in a previous leadership training at the Gardens or other organization

PRE-CAMP TRAINING WEEKEND

All participants in our leadership development programs must participate in a weekend training session. Dates to be announced.

ADDITIONAL TRAINING: The following specialized training courses are suggested for all leadership development program participants:

• FIRST AID: A requirement for Royal Botanical Gardens camp staff, and highly recommended for leadership trainees to obtain prior to the start of camp (call Red Cross or St. John’s Ambulance for course times in your area).

• CANOEING CERTIFICATION: If you are interested in assisting with canoe instruction, you must have a Level 1A Ontario Recreational Canoeing Association certifi cate. This is a provincially recognized program on fl at-water canoeing. Certifi cation may be offered at Royal Botanical Gardens and thereis a participant fee. Date and fee: TBA

CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDSRoyal Botanical Gardens reserves the right to cancel any program if the minimum number of participants is not reached. IF RBG cancels a camp, registrants are fully refunded. After thepre-registration deadline, no other refunds are made. Refunds may be made for registrant withdrawals made up to two weeks prior to the start of camp; however these are subject to a 25% cancellation fee. Changes to camp preference or dates must be made 5 business days before the registered camp week. Changes to dates made on original registration are subject to a $25 administration fee. Refunds are not issued for inclement weather.

WHILE AT CAMPRBG CAMP LEADERSCamps are led by mature, experienced andpassionate leaders who have a personal interest in ensuring that your child’s experience is one that will be cherished and remembered for many years.Our leaders are enthusiastic, carefully screened high school, college and university students or graduates. Many leaders and support staff havebeen with us for several years. These individuals provide a safe and enjoyable environment in which your child will learn, play and have fun. Camp leaders are assisted by supervisors, supportstaff, junior staff and leaders in training from our Leadership Development Program, resulting in an average leader to camper ratio of 8:1. All of our staff members undergo intensive training that focuses on safety, healthy child development, environmental appreciation/education and program management. All leaders are certifi ed inFirst Aid and canoeing (Ontario Recreational Canoeing Association). All staff members over the age of 18 are screened using local police criminal record checks. All camp programs are plannedunder the direction of certifi ed teaching and recreational professionals.

CANOEINGCamps that take place at the Nature Interpretive Centre participate in daily canoe programs. Garden Explorers camps at RBGCentre participate in canoe programs up to twice per week. All other programs do notparticipate in canoeing. We own a fl eet of canoes that can accommodate over 30 people on the water at any one time. Experienced canoeing specialists lead canoe programs which stress comfort on the water, fun and skill-building. Allcanoe instructors are certifi ed by the Ontario Recreational Canoeing Association. Canoeing takes place on Cootes Paradise Marsh, a shallow (average depth 1 metre) wetland which is located a short walk from the Nature Interpretive Centre.All canoeing equipment, including personal fl otation devices and paddles, is provided.

Royal Botanical Gardens’ Discovery Camps promote active participation in all activities; however no camper is pressured to participate in any activity they are not comfortable with. If you do not wish your child to participate in canoeing please notify your child’s leaders and the camp coordinator.

SHUTTLE BUSDiscovery Camps employs a school bus for its use in order to fully explore and enjoy the multiple gardens and naturalized areas that we offer.Camp programs may utilize this service in order to explore other areas of our property including (but not limited to): all garden areas, Rock Chapel, Berry Tract, South Shore Trails and The Fishway. This is a valuable service that adds to the camp experience. Speak with your camp leaders if you wish to fi nd out when your child’s camp group will be riding the bus. The bus is driven by a certifi ed, licensed contract driver. Half-day camps for children aged 3- and 4-year-olds do not make use of the bus.

WHAT TO BRING

Campers need the following items to be prepared for all activities:• With your registration you are provided with a

Discovery Camps t-shirt (one per summer) that you will receive on the fi rst day of camp (anadditional t-shirt can be purchased for $15). Please wear your camp t-shirt everyday.

• We are outside in all sorts of weather and makeuse of many craft materials. With all the fun we have, camp can be very messy. Please wearappropriate clothing (camp t-shirt and play clothes). It is recommended to bring an extra change of clothes in a backpack.

• An indoor pair of shoes for those extra mucky days.• Wear a hat for sun protection.• Lightweight long pants are a great way to

protect against mosquitoes and other bothersome creatures.

• For safety reasons close-toed shoes (runners orcroc-type clogs) should be worn, not sandals.

• To protect yourself from the elements, please arrivepre-screened with sun lotion and bug repellent andbring some along for reapplication at midday.

RBG is not responsible for any items your child loses at camp. Please label all of your child’s belongings with their fi rst and last nameand leave all valuables at home. Campers are asked not to bring items of any signifi cant value. RBG does not provide refunds for damaged or lost

belongings. Please do not bring electronic devicesto camp.

HELP SEND A CHILD TO CAMPRoyal Botanical Gardens has partnered with Mabel’s Labels (a local company that provides personalized labels for the stuff kids lose) to raisefunds to help families in fi nancial need in sendingchildren to camp in 2014. FOODEvery camper needs to bring a healthy and nut-safe lunch and snack for morning and afternoon snack breaks, as well as a refi llable water bottle to nourish them throughout the day. To help us model good environmental behaviour, please packa litterless lunch.

PIZZA DAYSPick up a pizza order form while at camp and enjoy a hot pizza lunch on Friday. Please pack all regular snacks and drinks for the day (including for lunch).

NUT SAFE POLICYTo ensure the safety and enjoyment of all of our campers,please ensure that lunches and snacks are free of nuts, nut products and traces of nuts. Food that does not comply with our policy will be replaced with a healthy alternative.

WHILE AT CAMPSIGN IN AND OUT OF CHILDRENIn order for anyone other than the person who dropped off and signed the camper into the program, to sign out and pick up a camper they must show photo identifi cation and must be listedon the child’s registration as either: a) a primary caregiver; b) an individual authorized for pick up; c) an individual listed as an emergency contact. The individual must be over the age of 18 years. Any changes to these names on your initial registration must be noted in writing by letter or fax (905-527-5752) addressed to the camp director andbe accompanied by a caregiver’s signature.

HEALTH AND SAFETY PROTOCOLSWe are vigilant in our concern for the health and safety of all participants. Children are required to wash their hands several times a day, especiallybefore they eat. We do not allow children to share food, drink or utensils. If your child is not feeling well please keep them home. If a child arrives at camp with an obvious illness, their caregivers are immediately contacted and asked to take the child home.

WEATHER POLICYRBG camp staff modify camp activities to promote the health and safety of all participants in hot and/or rainy weather. This include frequents water breaks, water activities, less active games and theuse of shaded, indoor and cooler areas of the camps. These precautions allows all campers toenjoy a fun and safe camp experience, even on hotor rainy days.

BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT PROCEDURESRoyal Botanical Gardens’ Discovery Day Camps strive to create a positive and safe community through safe, respectful, fun and diverse learningexperiences. Behaviour that is seen to go against apositive atmosphere and is seen as unacceptable behaviour is dealt with swiftly and according to RBG’s behaviour management procedures.Communication and coaching are used to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable experience.

Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in suspension or removal from camps programs. Refunds are not given for any camper who is sent home or removed from program for disciplinary reasons.
