Y ReSIdeNT CAMP

begin by assessing your child’s hobbies and favorite pursuits, as well as growing areas of interest. While picking a camp that has appeal to your child is essential, it is also important to remember that summer can also be a time for you to help your child experience activities that they wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to try.

once you’ve narrowed your focus, it’s impor-tant to assess the quality of care each camp provides. here is a checklist of items to evaluate before registering your child:

How long has the camp been in business? although there are many new camps starting up every summer, it is harder to go wrong with camps that have proven records.

Who is on the staff? inquire about staff experience and credentials, as well as any back-ground clearances a camp conducts when hiring.

What are the training requirements? find out whether staff is certified in first aid and cpr, and ask about any formal training the camp requires of its staff. good camps will provide ten or more hours or in-service staff training prior to the first day of camp.

CHOOSING A SUMMeR CAMPWhat is the staff-to-child ratio? this is an especially important consideration for camps that take daily field trips, or if your child needs extra attention or assistance.

What’s the typical daily agenda? find out what your child will be doing. Most every camp has a basic daily routine and a list of special activities (such as field trips), and many camps offer a parent orientation.

What’s included in the camp fee? Understand whether there are any “activity” or “field trip” fees or if the tuition is all-inclusive. another item to remember is that many camps provide financial assistance to help families in need send their children to camp.

Probably the most important question to consider when picking a camp is this: Do you feel the camp will be a safe place, with caring adults, and interesting activities for your child? if you can say yes to this question, congratulations, you’ve just picked a camp that you will feel comfortable with and your child will remember forever!
