Sending your child to camp for the first time can be somewhat nerve racking and stressful. Most children are excited to par-take in a summer camp but some can be nervous or scared. It is important to prepare your child for camp in order for them to have the best experience possible. My first over night camp experience was when I was eight years old. I attended Camp Hurlbert in Vernon and after my initial trepidation wore off it was one of the most memorable and enjoyable times of my
young life.
As an adult I have had the opportunity to coordinate summer camps for both the Boys and Girls Clubs and the YMCA. The benefits of these kinds of camps are often life changing. They foster independence in children and help them to build social skills that they will take with them into adulthood. Children build confidence and self worth, they try new things and meet new friends. They unplug from technology, become more physically active and develop a connection to nature and their surroundings.

how to prepareyour child
for summercamp
Following a few simple steps and techniques will help both you and your child to have a wonderful summer camp experience.
• Be positive. Talk with your child about all of the benefits of camp.• Include your child in the decision making process. Which camp should they attend? What activities are they
interested in? • Explore camp together. Visit the campground or review the website. Many summer camps have family days in
the spring to give families an opportunity to visit and become more familiar with the camp.• Discuss the daily routine at camp. What is to be expected of your child, the camper? What is the routine like?
What activities will they be involved in?• Review the camp checklist together. Often camps will provide a checklist of recommended supplies to pack
and bring. They might also offer a list of what not to bring. Be sure to go over these guidelines with your child.• Practice time apart. If your child is attending an overnight camp for the first time have them spend a night or
two at a friends house a few months in advance.• Teach independence at home. Have your child follow their morning and bedtime routine on their own. Have
them set the table, prepare a meal and wash dishes.• Speak openly about feeling homesick. Reassure your child that this is a normal, natural feeling and determine
what steps that they should take when they feel this way.• Try to have a friend or acquaintance attend the same camp. As a first time camper, I know that I felt a lot
better knowing that a friend was also there. • Ask your child if they have any questions or concerns. Just talking it through with them may elevate any fear
or anxiety that they may have.

W aking up every morning to watch the sunrise gives me immeasurable joy and peace before the noise and faster pace of the day unfolds.
Today’s life is hectic for both adults and children, however SUMMER time provides an opportunity to slow down, head outdoors and wonder at the beauty of nature.
Getting outdoors and closer to nature has all sorts of benefits for our children. It keeps them healthy, they can learn about the amazing natural world around them and most of all its fun to play outdoors… Children learn through play.
“When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” ~John Muir, Naturalist
Children are curious by nature. To them, everything is a wonder. Simple fun like building fairy houses, making mud pies, chasing grasshoppers, investigating pond life, picking wild berries, hunting for rocks, watching bees and butterflies, finding pine cones, making magic petal potions, building dens, climbing trees, lying back and watching clouds go by are all part of childhood.
Here in the Okanagan the diversity of wildlife is incredible and viewing wild animals in their natural habitat is a magical and enchanting experience for a child of any age. As a family, we have encountered bears, deer, moose, big horn sheep, bald eagles, osprey and rattlesnakes, to name a few. There are many wonderful trails and hikes to suit all ages throughout the Okanagan and the Regional parks offer activities for young children and youth throughout the summer break. Geo-cashing was a favourite with our 14yr old.
Of course, you don’t have to go in search of a moose; young children can have just as much fun going on a bug hunt in their own backyard, running barefoot on a sandy beach, sharing their favourite book under the shade of a giant tree. Playing in the local park where they have the freedom to run wild and chase butterflies and listen to the birds and squirrels go about their business. Why not wake up early together and let sunbeams warm your heart or stay up extra late and watch the night sky sparkle with promise.
Gardening is another wonderful fun way to connect children with nature. Simply by playing and working in a garden, children can experience the satisfaction that comes from caring for something over time, while observing the cycle of life firsthand.
Happy Healthy Children Play Outdoors
Getting children back into nature is a key part of the solution to keeping children healthy and truly creating wellness. There has never been a more important time for parents and grandparents to make outdoor play a priority for the children in their lives. It is one of the best things that we can do for their health, education and well-being and here in the Okanagan, we couldn’t ask for a more magical and awe-inspiring place to connect out children with the natural world.
Wishing you all a magical and enchanting summer full of wonder and awe and oodles of laughter!

Bring the camp experience home
Camping can be an exciting adventure. The fresh air, warm sunshine and waking to the sounds of nature can be a soul strengthening experience. If you are the one responsible for the planning, however, it can become stressful trying
to remember everything: shopping for ‘camp food’, booking the campsite and ensuring the camping supplies are clean, ready and packed. If the thought of planning for such an excursion makes you want to give up before you start, here are some ideas for a ‘camp at home’ experience your family will surely enjoy! Unplug and connect with your family, fill your soul, enjoy nature, without the stress of planning a traditional camping experience!
Set aside a weekend with your family: two full days without electronics or scheduled activities. Grab some blankets from the closet and create forts in your living room. Bring out the family games and have a weekend long tournament. Teach your children how to play cards! When is the last time you played Crazy 8’s, Go Fish or Hearts? Or maybe grab a flashlight and sit in the dark, taking turns telling scary stories.
If you are fortunate to have a backyard, this can be a great place to camp and connect with nature, without the planning. If you don’t own a tent, see if there’s someone who can lend you one. If you don’t own sleeping bags, use your extra blankets and pillows to create a cozy sleeping space for you and your family. Bring some flashlights along and go on a scavenger hunt in the dark! You’ll be creating wonderful memories for your children! If you want to make a campfire but are not permitted an open flame, gather together several battery operated candles and place them in a circle on the lawn. You can now sing campfire songs without having an actual fire!
If you have a relatively sheltered patio attached to your home, create a sleeping area for your family. Again, bring extra blankets and pillows outside to create a soft, cozy sleeping area. Have you ever star-gazed with your children? Lay out on the grass on a warm summer evening, contemplate the vastness of the universe or perhaps try to name the planets and constellations that are visible with the naked eye. If you happen to own a telescope, even better! Providing quiet, uninterrupted time for your children to open up, ask questions and share their secrets can be an eye-opening experience for a parent. Be sure, however, to listen without judgement and criticism to what they have to say.
In whatever way you choose to camp, be sure and keep it as low-stress as you can. Have different members of your family be responsible for different things. Maybe your four-year-old can gather the pillows; your seven-year-old can gather the blankets and your spouse can be responsible for the tent/fort/patio preparation, or the food/snack shopping (don’t forget the marshmallows and hotdogs!)
Happy camping!
