Elmwood Golf Course Construction Update

UNDERCONSTRUCTION

Elmwood is one of the three golf courses in Sioux Falls’ nationally accredited park system and is managed by Dakota Golf Management. Elmwood is receiving new upgrades to irrigation, drainage, and grassing during a multi-year renovation, while maintaining the integrity and feel of the current courses. Elmwood will always have 18 holes open during each phase of the project.

With 18 holes completed, the project is in the final phase and all 27 holes will be open in late summer.

Follow the project atwww.dakotagolf.comwww.facebook.com/dakotagolfwww.twitter.com/golfsiouxfalls

• Phase 1 (East Course) and Phase 2 (North 9 and driving range) have been completed. The reviews have been tremendous, and the SDGA has already asked Elmwood to host the 2018 State Amateur Championships!

• Phase 3 is in progress, with the West 9 closed, and 18-hole play will be maintained on the North 9 and East Course. The new West 9 will reopen in late summer 2016, when Elmwood will resume operating as a 27-hole facility. Our new five-hole junior facility will also open in the fall of 2016!

Bring your lawn chair, blankets, and bug spray and come see great

live theater in our beautiful parks system. Since all shows are outside, they are weather

dependent. Performance will be canceled if there is inclement weather prior to show time. All shows are free to the public.

Follow us on social media and on our website for updates!

Sounds of South Dakota, Inc., returns for their ninth season by presenting an operatic version of the story of The Billy Goats Gruff by John Davies, based on scenes from operas by W. A. Mozart, G. Donizetti, and G. Rossini.

An after-school game of hide and seek is ruined for three billy goat friends by a big bully. Remembering what their moms, dads, and teachers have told them about dealing with bullies, the two boy billy goats resolve to go home a different, longer way and share their difficulties with grownups. The littlest girl goat confronts the bully and prevails by inadvertently pushing him into the creek below. Concerned for his well-being she shows her would-be adversary kindness. By the time the two boys return with help, she’s able to introduce a soggy, forlorn ex-bully as their new friend.

This show will incorporate a children’s chorus written especially for this performance by Mr. Davies. Register for Children’s Opera Camp to join in the fun onstage! (See page 10.)

The royal court of Sicilia is happy and vibrant, until jealousy and suspicion tear King Leontes and Queen Hermione’s family apart. In this sweeping fairy tale full of romance, adventure, and plenty of magic, a shattered family is brought together in the unlikeliest of ways. Journey from Sicilia to Bohemia and back with a memorable cast of characters in a play that truly has something for everybody—lots of action, loads of laughs, and Shakespeare’s most famous stage direction, “Exit pursued by bear!” Don’t let the wintry title fool you—this heartwarming story is perfect to enjoy on a summer evening.

Join Bare Bodkins Theatre Company for their 19th summer in Falls Park’s beautiful Queen Bee Mill as they breathe new life into this classic tale using their signature bare-bones style.

Seating is on metal bleachers with very limited room for those needing assistance to sit in lawn chairs. All tickets are free, but seating is limited. First come, first seated. Tickets will be handed out starting at 6 p.m. the night of the performance. The show will run approximately 90 minutes.

POOLS SPECIAL EVENTS

The Great Cardboard Boat Race Kuehn Pool

#160009 Don’t laugh! Cardboard boats really can float! In fact, many boats raced three times at our previous events. Of those, we expect many will return and go for it once again. But here’s the catch: You may only use corrugated cardboard and duct tape. Use your imagination. Cardboard may be waxed. Here’s a hint: If you layer the cardboard, it will be much stronger. No wood, Styrofoam, fiberglass, or plastic, except for your oars and paddles. All boats must be powered by humans ages 7 years or older. Five age divisions. All boats will be judged based on creativity, sea-worthiness—and quickest to sink! Come join in on the fun and win some prizes.

Each boat will need two participants, one at each end of the pool. Life jackets for this event will be provided by Parks and Recreation and must be worn by contestants. Swimsuits required. SFPR Achieves ReaccreditationRanks Among the Best of the Bestin the Nation!Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation was reaccredited in the fall of 2015 by the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). Accreditation is valid for a period of five years. The self-assessment requires agencies to provide documented evidence for each of the 151 standards representing best practices of effective and efficient park and recreation operations. To earn national accreditation, agencies must fully meet all 37 fundamental standards and at least 85 percent of the remaining 114 nonfundamental standards. Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation met all fundamental standards and 96 percent of the remaining standards. Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation has been accredited through CAPRA since 2010.

CAPRA accreditation is a distinguished mark of excellence for park and recreation agencies and is a measure of an agency’s overall quality of operation, management, and service to the community. The National Recreation and Park Association research team estimates that there are approximately 14,000 parks and recreation agencies nationwide, of which 1 percent, or 144, have earned national accreditation.
