Synopsis: George Balanchine’s evocation of the sparkle of emeralds, rubies and diamonds is a brilliant ballet classic. The French Romantic music of Fauré provides the impetus for the subtlety and lyricism of ‘Emeralds’, while the fire of ‘Rubies’ comes from Stravinsky and the jazz-age energy of New York. Grandeur and elegance complete the ballet with the splendor of Imperial Russia and the peerless music of Tchaikovsky in ‘Diamonds’. Jewels is a masterclass in the many luminous facets of classical ballet and indeed of The Royal Ballet itself: the virtuoso choreography of Balanchine, the intensity of the soloists and the precision of the entire Company.

Jenie Gao: The PioneersDates: Now - June 10, 2017 | Where: Weaver & McIlrath Galleries
In a world that is constantly in flux, where people physically move more frequently between cities, states, and countries, and mentally and emotionally encounter more drastic points of view, Jenie wants to recognize the stories of those who have the courage to venture forward, with the purpose of connecting and improving our communities. These are the stories of pioneers, mapmakers, navigators, and guides. These are the stories of families who have moved with no guarantee of common language or opportunity. These are the stories of boomtowns turned ghost towns, turned tourist towns, of migrants and locals alike,
who dare to do something different and to find common ground. These are stories of conservation, of our values and our communities, coupled with an embrace of change and versatility.

Fabricated Facades The imagery in Dan’s work is a combination of cultural imagery and ideas constructed in the guise of whimsical architectural and mechanical forms presented in dynamic compositions. His sculptures are composed in ways that imply a narrative to which the viewer becomes a witness. He utilizes color to accentuate forms and complement the site. Shifts in scale and perspective challenge the viewer to question their physical relationship to the world around them and contemplate their surroundings.

Local to Global:The Unique Stories of Three Midwestern Photographers
The works of Mark Hirsch, David Thoreson, and Brian Peterson explore the delicate yet complex intricacies and nuances Mother Nature has to offer. Each artist, with his own unique story, offers insight and a distinct take on the beauty our planet has to offer, captured through nothing more than the lens of a camera.
*Artist Talk will take place at 7:00pm in the Lauridsen Performing Arts Theatre with each artist presenting for 20 minutes with a Q&A panel discussion. Workshops with each artist will be available throughout the exhibition. For more information, please see Education, pages 11 & 12.

Artist: Timothy J. Arand McIlrathDates: June 15 - August 5, 2017 Event: Opening Reception & Artist Talk: June 15, 2017Time: 5:00pm - 7:00pmWhere: Weaver & McIlrath GalleriesFiber art has been Timothy’s artistic expression for most of his life. Color, texture, and the “feel” of fabric has always been important to him. He began his creative exploration using photographic images and repeat pattern to screen print textiles. Feeling the need for more dimensional work led him to feltmaking. Soon this led him to building forms and inhabiting the forms with crocheted webs, and eventually incorporating found objects. Over the last 50 years, he has had an incredible “love affair” with fiber and fabric, and will continue creating new artwork as long as possible.

Artist Talk: Thursday, July 6, 2017Time: 5:00 - 7:00pmWhere: Monte Pearson GalleryDavid Strom’s work explores and reflects on his natural surroundings. Layered colors and complex design relationships on a two-dimensional surface is his playground. Most of his work has a border of rectangles that surround a central image. This predella format was used often in altarpieces and folk quilts. One of the things art can do is make you see things differently. It is his hope that after seeing his paintings and drawings, people will become aware of this universal shape that sits humbly on our landscape, just as it does in other parts of the world.

plein air
En plein air is a French expression meaning “in the open air”. Artists will be invited to participate in a limited painting period, causing the works to be fresh and of the moment. Papers and canvases will be stamped and upon the return of the finished works, the show will be hung with paint still wet to the touch. A wonderful show for collectors to take home a piece of “fresh” art inspired by our local landscape. This is also a great opportunity for the public and plein air painting enthusiasts to watch artists work while they are painting throughout the area.

Dana Potter currently works as a user interface designer and web art director. Inspired by the systematic ways she interacts with every day digital actions, she began recording and tracking the movements of her computer mouse on screen. With these tracings, they are then cut onto birch plywood using a laser cutter, giving the movement a mechanical rather than gestural look. By tracking her
own mouse movements and transforming the marks into physical and printed objects, Dana opens a door for individual exploration of our actions outside of the controlled computer environment.

Dates: August 31 - October 15, 2017Event: Opening Reception & Artist Talk: August 31, 2017Time: 5:00 - 7:00pm | Where: Monte Pearson GalleryErick Wolfmeyer considers making art a privilege, one which he has dedicated the past 20 years of his life to. Throughout his work, you find consistent themes: time, memory, and place. His quilts spring from memories and experience, as well as capture them, especially as each piece is a time intensive undertaking. His quilts, completed in a 12’ x 12’ studio in his 565-square foot home, are simply remarkable.
