Community Learning Summer 2016

Courses for adults with disabilities

Day: Monday Time: 1pm – 3pm Duration: 13 weeks

Starts: 18th April

Day: Tuesday Time: 10.30am – 1pm Duration: 14 weeks

Starts: 19th April

Day: Friday Time: 1.30pm – 4pm Duration: 14 weeks

Starts: 8th April

Moving to Music – This course is for anyone who likes to show off

their moves! Whether you are standing up or sitting down this course

is for anybody who likes to get their groove on! From Zumba to using

everyday objects as weights; you will always be moving. You may

also have the opportunity to create your own exercise DVD.

Art Fest – Come and get creative on this fun art course. Our artist

will be there to give you top tips on painting, drawing, collage and

crafts, to produce individual and group 2D and 3D projects. Cost of

£2.00 per week towards materials.

Preparing for Business – Come join the team who are helping to create our new business. Explore all aspects from marketing to production. Allowing you to build your own skills ready for any workplace.

Courses at Woodhouse Community Centre, 197 Woodhouse Street, Leeds, LS6 2NY

Cooking – Come try out your skills in the kitchen as we prepare and cook meals for anytime of the day. From brunch to afternoon

tea, supper to snacks. Cost is £2.00 per session.

Day: Thursday Time: 10.30am – 1pm Duration: 14 weeks

Day: Monday Time: 10.30am – 1pm Duration: 14 weeks

Starts: 18th April

Courses outside Barkston House – Within Leeds

Day: Thursday Time: 1.30pm – 4pm Duration: 10 weeks

Starts: 5th May

Day: Friday Time: 10.30am – 1pm Duration: 13 weeks

Starts: 22nd April

Way Finding- Don’t feel confident getting around? Come along, meet

new friends, go to new places and gain confidence in travelling

around. During this course you will learn how to use ticket machines,

read timetables, how to travel safely on public transport and discover

what your area has to offer. Travel costs will need to be covered.

Day: Monday Time: 11am – 4pm Duration: 13 weeks

Starts: 18th April

Exploring Animals and their Care - For anyone that likes animals or

would like to know more about them. What animals make good pets?

What animals are best not kept as pets and why? You will be looking at

answering these questions, whilst meeting a collection of animals from

small and furry to scales and feathers – what will be your favourite?

Drum Beats – Come along and join our djembe drum and percussion group. You will have the chance to explore and make music. You will get a chance to make a recording and take part in a performance. This course is for anyone. No experience necessary Cost of £2.00 per week towards instrument up keep.

Spanish Experience – Hola! Come along and experience Spain from Leeds! You will have the opportunity to learn about its culture, food and language. You do not need to know any Spanish to take part in this course. You will gain confidence and the ability to speak another language.

Dramarama – Come and join this fantastic group! You will get an

opportunity to explore this varied subject through role play, storytelling,

re-enacting and script writing. You will have the chance to take part in a

performance and may be even record it.

Day: Wednesday Time: 10.30am – 1pm Duration: 14 weeks

Starts: 20th April

Courses for adults with disabilities 25 years old or over

All courses are free but some have a small charge to cover the cost of materials.

Most courses start w/c 18th

April but check individual courses for start dates.

All Groups will have the chance to work towards running workshops in their local

communities, performances and exhibitions depending on the group and how they

choose to engage with the community.

Active Matters – This group is for anyone who likes to meet with their peers, make new friends and wants to develop their own health and wellbeing whilst playing an active part in their local community. Group members will lead the way, have a say in the activities they do that may include; outdoor sports, dance, fitness, meditation, relaxation, photography, art and more. What would you like to do?

Cost £2.00 per week towards activity costs.

Day: Tuesday Time: 1.30pm – 4pm Duration: 23 weeks

Starts: 19th April

Active Arts - Meet friends, choose and take part in activities

based on the arts. So this is the group for all those budding

actors, artists, photographers and those wanting to try everything.

Group members will lead the way, have a say in the activities

they do from producing a soap opera to your very own graffiti and

much more. All designed to develop your wellbeing. Cost £2.00

per week towards activity/materials costs.

Day: Wednesday Time: 1:30pm – 3pm Duration: up to 46 weeks

Starts: 6th April

Active Matters A project funded by People’s Health Trust an independent charity addressing health inequalities across

Great Britain. It works closely with each of the 51 society lotteries and makes grants using money raised

by the society lotteries through The Health Lottery.

Active Matters are member led groups. Providing a range of activities to support and promote wellbeing

to its members and their local communities. If you enjoy being active or creative, joining in, exploring

new things and want to make new friends; why not join one of our groups? You can join a group anytime

subject to space availability.

All courses are subject to change. All courses are subject to minimum numbers of learners. It

is really important that learners attend all sessions (we know occasionally it’s not always

possible) as by not attending puts the course at risk of closure and learners miss out.

For those aged under 25 places are available in our Active Matters groups (see the previous

page) and our new My Teens and Twenties Matter social groups. Both offer opportunities for

you to meet with peers, take part in activities that you choose and have fun. For more
