My Fair Evelyn’s Dream was the theme of this year’s Hot Pink Party, which honored the life

of BCRF Founder Evelyn Lauder on April 30. This was the most successful Hot Pink Party to date raising over $6 million for research initiatives worldwide. The Waldorf=Astoria Grand Ballroom was filled with over 1,300 devoted BCRF supporters, long-time friends and familymembers. Acting BCRF Chairman, Leonard Lauder, opened the evening and introduced an inspirational video that captured his late wife as a champion in the fight against breast cancer. “I am committed to carrying Evelyn’s torch with the same determination to finding a cure,” he said.

Sir Elton John performed an array of heartfelt songs, all dedicated to his friendship with Mrs. Lauder. He explained, “Evelyn loved music. She loved to dance.” Elton promised to

support the event in the future because he believes in Evelyn’s dream of a world free of breast cancer. Elizabeth Hurley, who traveled around the world with Evelyn spreading the breast cancer awareness message, hosted the evening along with Brian Williams of NBC Nightly News. Hurley paid tribute to Evelyn Lauder, her “girlfriend and role model.”

Margaret Stewart, longtime friend and colleague of Mrs. Lauder, received The Unsung Hero Award for her unflag-ging support of Evelyn for the last 25 years. Leonard Lauder made a touching presentation and remarked that Margaret is an “honorary member of the Lauder Family, now and always.” The Unsung Hero Award was created by Roz and Les Goldstein to honor a caring friend who gives hope to someone diagnosed with breast cancer.

Leonard Lauder surprised each guest with an Evelyn Lauder Dream Scarf, inspired by her photograph “Poetry in the Light,” which captured her deep love of nature, flowers, beauty, and life. During the scarf presentation Hurley

the hot pink luncheon & symposium in palm beach On February 6, BCRF held its ninth annual Hot Pink Luncheon and Symposium in memory of BCRF’s beloved founder and Chairman, Evelyn Lauder. The event was a huge success raising more than $500,000. Introducing himself as “Mr. Evelyn Lauder,” Leonard Lauder warmly welcomed a crowd of 250 guests at The Breakers hotel in Palm Beach.

The event brought together an expert panel to provide an update on Breast Cancer: A Year of Progress and Promise. The panelists featured Larry Norton, MD, BCRF Scientific Director and Deputy Physician-in-Chief at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center; Daniel A. Haber, MD, PhD, Director of Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center; and Edith A. Perez, MD, Deputy Director of Mayo Clinic Cancer Center and Group Vice Chair of the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology. Chairman of BCRF’s Scientific Advisory Committee, Clifford Hudis, MD (Chief, Breast Cancer Medicine Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center) moderated the panel.

The Luncheon included an informal fashion show featuring selections from the Neiman Marcus Spring 2012 collection. Special thanks to Louise Braver and the Braver Philanthropic Fund, Credit Suisse, The Sol Goldman Charitable Trust, The Leonard and Evelyn Lauder Foundation, The Ambrose Monell Foundation, Neiman Marcus and Betty Saks for generously underwriting the Luncheon, and to the Co-Chairs Donna Acquavella, Louise Braver, Betsy Green, Joanne de Guardiola, Sandy Krakoff, Hillie Mahoney, Pauline Pitt, Patricia Quick, Hilary Geary Ross, Frances Scaife and Judie Schlager. BCRF looks forward to returning to Palm Beach on February 5, 2013.

Qvc presents “ffany shoes on sale®” Thanks to everyone who supported the shoe industry’s largest event, QVC Presents “FFANY Shoes on Sale.” BCRF was the recipient of a record-breaking $392,714 donation to continue funding “The First Step Award.” This award underwrites a research project led jointly by Larry Norton, MD, of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Rachel Hazan, PhD, of Albert Einstein College of Medicine, who are testing the efficacy of the inhibitor FGFR in eradicating metastasis. On October 22, FFANY and QVC will honor Evelyn Lauder posthumously with the FFANY Jodi Fisher Humanitarian Award.

Charity Navigator Gives BCRF 4-Star Rating For the tenth time since 2002, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation has received the top 4-star rating from Charity Navigator. Only a quarter of the nonprofit organizations evaluated by Charity Navigator have received this highest rating. This confirms that BCRF adheres to good governance, consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way, and has out-performed most other charities in America.

Boston Hot Pink Party Celebrates Inspirational Women BCRF painted Boston pink for the seventh annual Boston Hot Pink Party at the InterContinental Hotel on May 17. This year’s event raised $800,000 and honored prominent Bostonians and BCRF Advisory Board members Elisha Daniels and Sandy Krakoff. The evening began with a moving tribute to Evelyn Lauder. Leonard Lauder welcomed the 350 guests who gathered to celebrate these inspirational women. Kelley Tuthill of WCVB NewsCenter 5 and Deborah Norville of Inside Edition emceed and gave personal tributes centering on the impact Evelyn Lauder and BCRF has had on their lives.

BCRF Scientific Director, Larry Norton, MD, enlightened guests about BCRF’s ongoing commitment to funding scientific research conducted in the Boston community. Cumulatively, BCRF has contributed over $36 million to New England-based breast cancer researchers. In 2011, more than $4.2 million was awarded to 26 scientists in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Connecticut.

Elisha Daniels and Sandy Krakoff ignited the BCRF breast cancer movement in Boston and continue to bring a personal commitment to the cause. Nancy and Rick Kelleher, last year’s Humanitarian Award recipients, presented these deserving women with the 2012 Boston Humanitarian Award. “Sandy and Elisha understand the importance of BCRF’s work from personal experience,” said the Kellehers. “They are champions and true survivors. They embody the qualities of true humanitarians.”

Topping off the night was an uplifting performance by ‘All 4 Fun Gospel Choir.’ Clad in pink robes, the choir brought guests to their feet with inspirational songs including the signature gospel hymn, Oh Happy Day. Even Massachusetts Senator John Kerry danced on the stage until the close of the evening.

The Boston Hot Pink Party would not have been possible without the generosity and support of Brooks Brothers, David Yurman, Leonard Lauder, Nancy and Rick Kelleher, The Krakoff Family Foundation (Reed, Roger, and Hope Krakoff), Millipore, Saks Fifth Avenue, The Carl and Ruth Shapiro Family Foundation, and Donna and James Stearns.

BCRF President Myra Biblowit humbly thanked Honorary Chairmen: Teresa Heinz, Nancy

and Rick Kelleher, Leonard Lauder, Mayor Thomas M. Menino and Angela Faletra Menino; Co-Chairs: Elisha Daniels, Kelley Doyle, Donna Stearns and Linda Waintrup; Vice-Chairs: Andrea Brooks, Lynn Dale, Nancy Edman Feldman, Dr. Carolyn Kaelin, Sandy Krakoff and Judie Schlager for their endless dedication and leadership.

For the fourth consecutive year, David Yurman opened its Copley Place boutique for the annual Boston Hot Pink Party Kick-Off Reception. This year’s successful cocktail and shopping event was hosted by David and Sybil Yurman and raised an additional $15,000 for BCRF.

Evelyn H. Lauder, founder of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, was remembered on January 23 as a

guiding light. At the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center in New York City, Rabbi Peter J. Rubenstein,

New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Elizabeth Hurley, Larry Norton, MD, and Barbara Walters spoke

poignantly about Mrs. Lauder’s lifetime achievements.

Evelyn Lauder’s sons, William and Gary, her grandchildren, daughter-in-law, and her husband of more than

50 years, Leonard Lauder, gave emotional, heartfelt tributes. Her eldest son, William Lauder, described her as

a “passionate, fun-loving, devoted mother.” She was “a jewel of a person,” said Gary Lauder.

“Most people knew Evelyn as ‘the breast cancer lady,’” said Leonard Lauder. He spoke of her optimism about

BCRF and deep dedication to the Foundation. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month she traveled tire-

lessly around the world with Elizabeth Hurley, spokesmodel for the Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer

Awareness Campaign, raising awareness about the importance of early detection.

Dr. Norton recalled Mrs. Lauder as a “true visionary.” He spoke of her love for photography, and more im-

portantly, beauty. “Beauty, to Evelyn, is all about connections,” he said. “BCRF is all about relationships and

connections with the scientists. She trusted science and she believed in the eradication of cancer. We must be

healers, a concept by which Evelyn lived her life,” emphasized Dr. Norton.

With technological advances, scientists are increasingly able to rapidly define the molecules –DNA, RNA, and proteins – that go awry in cancer cells. They are applying that knowledge to overcome the biggest obstacles to curing breast cancer—drug resistance and the spread of cancer (metastasis) to vital organs. Most deaths from breast cancer are not due to the primary tumor in the breast but rather from metastases that are resistant to drug therapy.

“Our increasing knowledge of the molecules that make the cancer cell ‘cancerous’ is transforming cancer medicine,” explained Larry Norton, MD (Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, MSKCC), BCRF Scientific Director. “These aberrant molecules not only allow the cells to grow, invade, spread, and escape therapy, but also allow them to recruit other cells in the body—such as white blood cells and the cells that make blood vessels—which is critical for tumor formation.”

One significant advance came from the research group led by BCRF grantee, Matthew Ellis, MD, PhD (Washington University School of Medicine), whose team successfully decoded the complete tumor DNAs of more than 70 breast cancers. In collaboration with colleagues within Washington University and from the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology, he compared tumor DNAs to healthy DNAs of the same patient and identified more than 1,700 mutations that occurred in the cancer cells, most of which were unique to the individual.

“Our findings confirmed that cancer genomes are extraordinarily complicated,” said Dr. Ellis. “This explains our difficulty in predicting outcomes and finding new treatments.”

“However, some mutations that are rare in breast cancer may be common in other cancers, and we may already have drugs designed to treat them,” Dr. Ellis pointed out. “For example, you may find the rare breast cancer patient whose tumor has a mutation that’s more commonly found in leukemia, so you might give that breast cancer patient a leukemia drug.”

The breast cancer stem cell—better described as a tumor initiating cell—is another prime suspect in the recurrence and metastasis of breast cancer. In February 2012 in Cell Stem Cell, Geoffrey Wahl, PhD (Salk Institute) published findings suggesting that during cancer development, the “navigator” of healthy stem cells, which tells them what to do and where to go in the body, goes haywire.

“This internal GPS system stimulates the stem cells to grow and form more stem cells, or to change into different cells that form complex organs, such as the breast,” elaborated Dr. Wahl. “Our findings tell us that the GPS is broken during cancer development, and that may explain why we detect stem-like cells in breast cancers.”

Other critical discoveries are being made throughout the BCRF network of investigators. For example, Charles M. Perou, PhD (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill) is recognized internationally for his classification of breast cancer subtypes, now the standard method in use throughout the world. Michael F. Clarke, MD (Stanford University) and Max S. Wicha, MD (University of Michigan) have accomplished seminal work on cancer stem cells and established a now thriving branch of biological science of fundamental importance.

“Understanding the molecular differences between cancer and normal cells is already informing clinical decisions by allowing us to not only better estimate the chance of cure but also to better select the right patients for the right drugs,” summarized Clifford Hudis, MD (MSKCC), Chairman of BCRF’s Scientific Advisory Committee. “These gains, however, represent just the beginning of the changes that our rapidly growing understanding of the molecular biology of breast cancer will yield. Across all subtypes of breast cancer, we can expect to find and validate new drug targets and new agents that promise better outcomes and more limited side effects.”

10 The breast Cancer Research Foundation®

Q & A with Daniel F. Hayes, MD

Tell us about yourself as a scientist and how you became interested in breast cancer research. Did you ever seriously consider another kind of career than that of the sciences?I am a practicing medical oncologist who does translational research. As a result, I conduct research in both the clinical and laboratory settings. My principal research interest is the generation and vali-dation of tumor biomarkers for breast cancer patients.

I decided to go to medical school after considering a career teaching high school and coaching sports. I had no interest in oncology early in medical school, but as a junior medical student, I was assigned to the oncology ward at Indiana University — an idea I was originally against. By chance, my attending physician was Dr. Lawrence Einhorn, who is known for his work using cisplatin (platinum-based chemo-therapy) to cure testicular cancer. Dr. Einhorn’s research greatly increased the survival rate of all testicular cancer patients, even those whose cancer had spread or metastasized. Dr. Einhorn, a very charismatic man, inspired me to become an oncologist and also encouraged me to go outside of Indiana.

All the years I’ve been in oncology, I have been surrounded by fantastic colleagues, many of whom coincidentally are also BCRF grantees. After I spent15 years at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Dr. Marc Lippman recruited me to join him at Georgetown’s Lombardi Cancer Center, and then I moved with him to University of Michigan, where we have a fabulous group of clinicians, clinical researchers, and laboratory investigators interested in breast cancer. It is really a great place to accomplish what we are trying to do: change practice in this disease.

Briefly describe your BCRF-funded research project. What are some laboratory and/or clinical experiences that inspired your work? What are your primary goals? BCRF funds two projects that I’m involved in: one is on pharmacogenomics, the study of genes for the metabolism of drugs, with my fellow grantee, Dr. James Rae at the University of Michigan, and the other is related to my role as Chair of the Correlative Sciences Committee of the North American Breast Cancer Group (NABCG, formerly known as The Breast Cancer Intergroup). I will focus on my work through NABCG first.

NABCG is a network of US-based breast cancer clinical trial cooperative groups sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). BCRF support has been critical in NABCG’s activities, particularly those of the Correlative Science Committee (CSC). The CSC was established as a rigorous peer-review committee, which assesses and determines which projects could gain access to the precious biological samples collected from patients who participated in NCI breast cancer trials since the 1990s.

As CSC Chair for several years, I – along with my colleagues – noticed that sometimes projects would be approved but then the researchers couldn’t perform the research because of the lack of funding. The costs of some of these projects were very modest, and although the science is superb, they were almost not worth the enormous effort to write a formal NCI grant. With BCRF support, we have been able to provide funding to individual investigators so that they can analyze tissues and new markers for clinical response rapidly and rigorously. Most of these projects aim to help identify people who would or would not benefit from a specific treatment.

In addition, BCRF support has allowed us to convene several workshops on such topics as pharmacogenomics, high throughput sequencing, and the Ki67 marker. The workshop on the Ki67 marker gave us an opportunity to “harmonize” researchers on how to use and assess this marker, which measures how quickly cells are “turning over.”

We also collaborate on correlative science activities with Breast International Group (BIG), with whom we are currently building an informational website to link the organizations. This website (which went live in January 2011) will link with the one we already have for correlative sciences in the North American Group, and give lab scientists, from either NABCG or BIG, the ability to learn about the work that has already been done in his/her area of interest, and more importantly to determine what specimens we have available for future research and how to access them through our peer-review systems.

What direction(s)/trends do you see emerging in breast cancer research in the next 10 years? I’ve been a medical oncologist for 26 years, and the advances over that time have been extremely important. They seem to have come about unbelievably quickly. Investigators such as Drs. Chuck Perou, Matthew Ellis, and Gordon Mills have led us to the realization that “breast cancer” is comprised of many different kinds of disease. This “fragmentation” gives us a better idea of what the different types of breast cancer are and what contributes to their growth. This information has already provided clinically useful tools and in the future will even better help lead to our goal of “personalization” or individualization of therapy.

In addition, collaboration will become more important than ever to progress. Now that we have a clearer picture of the complexity of breast cancer, we also know that all breast cancers cannot be treated, or cured, the same way. Also, the current financial climate has created additional challenges for the research community. Working together and sharing resources is ever more critical to our success.

Letter from our President, MYRA J. BIBLOWITThe outpouring of affection and support from so many of you since the passing of our beloved founder, Evelyn H. Lauder, has been most gratifying. Thank you for your compassion and commitment to BCRF and to the mission that Evelyn so ardently championed.

It is because of you that BCRF will continue to flourish. In recent months, many significant advances in breast cancer care and research have resulted from the work of the talented men and women whom we proudly support. BCRF’s investments in deciphering the complexity of cancer biology, creating more effective treatments, and improving the quality of life for people affected by breast cancer will endure and are changing the impact of a breast cancer diagnosis for millions of women worldwide.

Our commitment to strive towards cure and prevention of breast cancer remains unshaken. The loss of Evelyn did not just affect the Foundation, it affected the community of breast cancer supporters and activists who were her staunch allies. Evelyn inspired us all and BCRF is determined to fulfill her great ambition.

We are grateful to all of you during this time of transition. Your continued dedication and enthusiasm will bring us closer to the realization of Evelyn’s dream.

Myra J. Biblowit

Message from Leonard A. Lauder, Acting ChairmanOver the last several months, I’ve been leading The Breast Cancer Research Foundation in its efforts to change the face of women’s health when it comes to breast cancer.

I am absolutely dedicated to my dear wife Evelyn’s dream of saving lives through the cure and prevention of breast cancer. I cannot replace Evelyn—her grace, guidance and leadership are responsible for the achievements of BCRF—but I can keep her mission going strong.

Evelyn has left us, and it is now up to me, the Foundation, the brilliant researchers, and all of you to work until the battle is won. One person can make a difference. She made a difference. You and I can make a difference.

Who would have thought nearly 20 years ago that the Foundation, which now funds world-class research in 13 countries and is responsible for many advances and breakthroughs, would be what it is today? But Evelyn’s faith never wavered that her dream of a world free of breast cancer would be realized.

We must cure this disease. By keeping Evelyn’s legacy alive through your continued support of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, we will.

With my warmest regards.

play for P.I.N.K. Play for P.I.N.K. (PFP) continues its expansion into new states and clubs every day. This year volleyball teams, lacrosse groups, and baseball leagues have signed on to Play for P.I.N.K. Why not become part of this winning team, right in your own neighborhood, with your friends and colleagues? In addition to golf and tennis, there are other wonderful PINK events such as swim meets, card games, dinners and dances, and PINK cocktail parties – all raising money for BCRF.

PFP’s commitment to donating 100 percent of funds raised would not be possible without its generous title sponsor Bloomberg. The Estée Lauder Companies and Wilson Sporting Goods continue to donate products for all events.

The organization is currently funding 13 leading breast cancer research projects as a result of last year’s record-breaking $3.75 million donation. Cumulatively this group has raised $25.75 million for BCRF! We are indebted to the extraordinary PFP volunteers – the board, chairwomen and participants. Last year, over 25,000 people came forward to give hope their best shot by Playing for P.I.N.K.

Think P.I.N.K. Be in the know. Visit www.playforpink.org or contact Stephanie at [email protected] or 646-497-2605 to register or organize a tournament, find out about upcoming events or to make a donation.

THANK YOUCorporate Donors

“The Breast Cancer Research Foundation recognizes and appreciates all the hard work and dedication of our Corporate Alliance Partners. Without your support, we would not be on our way to a cure, nor would BCRF-funded research be responsible for as many scientific advances. The only thing that stands in the way of a cure is funding. The millions of dollars that you have contributed to the Foundation this past fiscal year fuels our quest for prevention and a cure and underscores the power that is obtainable when you aim to make a difference.” - Myra J. Biblowit, President, BCRF

A Million Thanks to Our Million-Dollar-Plus Corporate Partners*

ANN INC. made a record-breaking donation of more than $2.9 million, thanks to the October sale of the Ann Taylor and LOFT Cares Card program, Ann Taylor’s Pink Jewel Collection, and LOFT’s limited-edition tees and jewelry collaborations with designers Rachel Leigh, Roxanne Assoulin, and blogger Jessica Quirk. An additional $300,000 was raised through a Mother’s Day promotion, featuring the Ann Taylor Cares Card and the Ann Taylor Floral Watercolor Scarf. In total, ANN INC. donated $3.2 million to BCRF this year.

The Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Awareness (BCA) Campaign is devoted to defeating breast cancer through education and medical research. As BCRF’s first and largest corporate partner, The BCA Campaign has raised more than $35 million to fund 140 BCRF research grants since inception. These funds have been raised through the sale of select Pink Ribbon products offered through many of the Company’s sought-after beauty brands, and with extraordi-

nary employee engagement and fundraising. In October 2012, The BCA Campaign will celebrate its 20th Anniversary and will be dedicated to the tremendous courage of Evelyn H. Lauder, BCA Campaign Founder and Pink Ribbon co-creator.

Bloomingdale’s continues to raise the bar with its 2011 PINK campaign raising over $1.6 million for BCRF through the sale of PINK products, including limited-edition pink gift cards, the Little Pink Bag and the Big Pink Umbrella. Customers celebrated with in-store special events and

participated in the popular Give Pink, Get More program, Bloomingdale’s branded fundraising program for breast cancer awareness. This contribution fully supports four BCRF research grants, in addition to providing support to a number of medical institutions where BCRF research is undertaken.

Delta Air Lines presented a check to BCRF for $1.25 million this year, an increase of 25 percent over last year, from the fabulous Taking Flight for the Fight program. During October, Delta employees don pink uniforms and sell pink lemonade onboard all flights and in Delta Sky Clubs. Delta’s

international “pink plane” features BCRF’s trademarked pink ribbon, has carried nearly 150,000 customers, and made 104 trips around the world since 2010. The aircraft flies international routes helping to raise global awareness for BCRF.

ULTA Beauty surprised BCRF this year when they unveiled a check for over $1.7 million. These funds were raised through ULTA’s successful Windows of Love – Donate with a Kiss™ campaign, a company-wide initiative that engaged employees and customers through “kiss” decals affixed to ULTA store windows, customer donations, limited-edition product sales, a nation-wide cut-a-thon and a golf tournament.
