Priscilla Good, along with husband Peter and daughters Brianna and Saphira settled in Mount Morgan just over four years ago. Originally from Ipswich, the family moved to Mount Morgan as the town had affordable housing and Priscilla found employment in Rockhampton. It was also a bonus that they had relatives in Rockhampton and Priscilla’s mother and father live in Mount Morgan, only a few houses away. This allows Priscilla to care for her parents and the girls can visit with their grandparents as often as they like.

Last Monday 22nd January, saw local students head through the school gates for the first time this year. For some of the students, it was the first time ever.

Hundreds of locals and visitors didn’t let forecasts of showers dampen their Aussie Day celebrations at the Mount Morgan Dam on Friday.

Armed with kayaks, picnic blankets, flags and swim toys, the crowd joined in on the family fun day hosted by the Mount Morgan Rotary Club.

The free event was officially opened by Deputy Mayor and Divisional Councillor Cherie Rutherford, with a flag raising ceremony carried out by the 125 Army Cadets Unit.

The morning’s 400+ attendees were treated to a range of children’s amusements, some favourite Aussie dishes the likes of BBQ goodies, lamingtons and vegemite sandwhiches. Live entertainment was provided by Di Coburn, Elaine Graham, Folk Laurieon (Greg & Trish Mathers), Jim Lynch and Freda McDougall.

The event was sponsored by the Rockhampton Regional Council.

The Mount Morgan Rotary Club thanks all who attended. A special thanks also goes to Chris Izzard, Tracey Glover, Noelene Crone and the 125 Army Cadets Unit - Corp. Talea’h Betts, Sgt. Kira Postorella, Sgt. William Tansley, Corp. Dallas Smith, Corp. Sheryl Bannah.

On the 3rd, 4th and 5th of January our Juniors travelled down to the Capricorn Resort Golf Club to compete in the annual Summer Classic. The Summer Classic attracts Juniors from all over Queensland from as far as Cairns down to Bundaberg.

The first day was a coaching day where the Juniors learnt some valuable skills from the PGA coaching clinic.

Thursday and Friday saw the children compete in their respective categories. Thursday really tested our children as some had never played in the championships before, while trying to incorporate the new skills they had learnt from the previous day.

Friday saw improvements in scores, more relaxed juniors and presentation.

On Wednesday the 17th January, Member for Mirani Stephen Andrew, Acting Mayor Cherie Rutherford and Damon Morrison executive manager to the Mayor, met with MMPAD executive members and the Historical Museum Committee.

This initial meeting was the result of MMPAD’s invitation to the new member to visit our town, meet with the executive and discuss what could be achieved to improve and promote Mount Morgan.

Items on the agenda were Tourism opportunities, a permanent water supply for Mount Morgan, the Railway Museum, Hunslett Locomotive, Historical Museum, fireclay caverns, youth programmes and employment opportunities for Mount Morgan residents and businesses.

Stephen said “Certainly the growth of tourism will happen when the reprocessing of the Mount Morgan mine happens. This will also help businesses and the Mount Morgan Community”.

MP Stephen Andrew was very impressed with the history Mount Morgan holds and is supportive of tourism development in the town.

We look forward to working with our member in conjunction with Rockhampton Regional Council.

Carbine Resources Limited (ASX: CRB) advises that in relation to the EA amendment application made in 2017, DES has advised that the application will be assessed as a major amendment to the original 2010 EA. Following an ALD, the timing associated with any amendment process is defined in the Environmental Protection Act 1994. The revised EA is now expected in May 2018.

Carbine Managing Director, Tony James, said “the Company has been working on this application for over 12 months which has at times been very frustrating and time consuming, and this assessment decision at least puts a time frame on this approval process moving forward. We expect that now the timing is established the relevant parties will actively engage with all the stakeholders to see this project advance towards final approval. The Company will work diligently to respond to any further information requests as quickly as possible in order to reduce the process timing as much as possible. During this period we will be able to keep progressing the project on several fronts including the ongoing discussions with financiers for project finance.”

While education is free, there is no compulsory school attendance.

Child labour in the form of street selling is common, but of far more serious concern is the fact that many children are labouring in the gold mines of Suriname.

DES has decided that the proposed amendment is a major amendment pursuant to s 228 of the EP Act because it does not meet the criteria for a minor amendment. In summary, DES have given the following reasons for the decision:

1. Potential increase in environmental impact due to the inclusion of the Shepherds Gully tailings resource and the revised list of regulated structures.

2. Increase in the scale of the activities with the inclusion of Shepherds Gully tailings resource and a proposed larger Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) in Sandstone Gully.

3. Increase in disturbed area footprint of more than 10% by the inclusion of Shepherds Gully and a larger TSF in Sandstone Gully.

Also recently, Carbine hosted a mine site visit from the newly elected State Member for Mirani – Mr Stephen Andrew.

Following the visit, Mr Andrew expressed his strong support for Carbine’s project given it would “positively impact the local community, tourism industry and economy”.

CARBINE RESOURCES UPDATE

Since 1887, on or near the first Friday in March every year, millions of Christians have gathered worldwide to pray for the issues of family violence, child abuse, human trafficking and other forms of injustice. In 2018 that prayerful support will be directed at the 540,000 inhabitants of the Republic of Suriname, on the north-eastern coast of South America.

Despite a history steeped in slavery and political coups, this tiny nation has achieved remarkable progress since its independence in 1975.

Suriname enjoys multi-ethnicity and biodiversity, freedom of religion, free primary and secondary education, and free medical care for children and seniors.

But behind closed doors, family violence, abuse and neglect are ongoing issues. Children are particularily vulnerable, many growing up in orphanages or one-parent families.

The finishing touches are still to come for Mount Morgan’s new look CBD, and it’s already looking better than ever.

Major construction works are complete, the amenities block and new seating shelters are open, and the footpaths, trees and shrubs are each now in place.

The past weeks have also seen the addition of colour lighting, which now illuminates the arbour of an evening.

Over the next three to four weeks, the final works will be completed and will include new signage, handrails and additions to the arbour.

The upcoming weeks will also see the much loved Mafeking Bell fitted to the structure now in the CBD’s centre traffic island. It will be fitted above the large Scout emblem that is now embedded in a section of the CBD’s pavement – paying special tribute to part of the bell’s history.

An official opening is anticipated for next month, with full details set to be provided by Council in the next issue of the Mount Morgan Argus.

The Mount Morgan Streetscape Improvement Project is a jointly funded Federal, State and Council initiative.

Mount Morgan CBD Update

And from Mount Morgan’s current CBD, to its former CBD… works have also taken place in East Street.

Rockhampton Regional Council has recently carried out preservation works on the original gas lamp and hitching rail on display in the street’s traffic island. The gas lamp has been sanded, rust treated and given a fresh coat of paint.

The horse hitching rail has been tightened and timber oiled.

Just some of what’s been included in the upgrade:

•Initial earth works •Underground works – which has included electrical pits, communication conduits, stormwater drainage and the realignment of water mains•Installation of street art structures and sculptural elements•Installation of paths, linkages and retaining walls• Full upgrade of amenities •Construction and installation of shelters and gazebos

Works still to come:

• Installation of signage • Completion of arbour – addition of “leaves” • Additional seating – along with the sheltered seating areas, additional seating will be installed in the CBD. This will be completed later in 2018, in conjunction with a second upgrade project. Further details to come.

Friday the 19th January, saw 18 energetic youngsters from Le Smileys Early Learning Centre visit Mount Morgan. From the moment the children stepped onto the platform all eyes were on the silver bullet railmotor and requests to ‘hop on the train’ came thick and fast.

Peta and Sidnee included the trip to the Railway Museum as part of the ‘Vacation Care’ programme run by Le Smileys in Gracemere. The centre offers before and after school care as well as vacation care Monday to Friday.

There was plenty for them to do over the school holidays with trips to the waterpark, library, bowling alley, laser tag and the TMC Mine Tour all on the agenda for the group.

The group were amazed with the old typewriters, telephones and rail memorabilia in the museum and the 3D Rack Rail presentation was also a hit.

After various colouring and train related activities the children were off to the Dam for lunch and the chance to let off some more steam in the covered playground.

We guarantee they slept well that night for their parents.

‘He was a member of the syndicate which acquired the Mount Morgan gold mine from the Morgan Brothers, and thus became immensely wealthy. He did not immediately upon the accession of fortune leave the district, but remained in it intent upon promoting its best interests’ (Morning Bulletin (Rockhampton), 9 June 1896).

Having read the book, “A Remarkable Gift” about the Walter and Eliza Hall Trust Fund and the fund’s magnificent work it is a very pleasing thought that a great deal of that money invested came from Walter’s interest from the prosperous mining days of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Co. The Trust has performed over 100 years and is hopeful of going for a further 100 years as its trustees are men very talented, honest and know clever investment opportunities.

Walter and Eliza Hall had two very good friends in Richard Gardiner Casey and George Kelso King. They had connections in various business dealings but both proved wonderful friends to Eliza after Walters’s death by assisting her with the legacy that Walter had left her; so a little history about these two men.

Richard Casey, 1846 – 1919. He was born in Tasmania but moved to Victoria and from there took a great interest in pastoralist activities in all states. At one stage he was the Queensland Member of the Legislative Assembly for Warrego, but it was not a successful period so he moved to Melbourne to seek out a new life.He was interested in gold mining and after visiting London as a director of Goldsborough Mort and Co. on his return he became a director of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Co., and in 1912 chairman of directors, and was instrumental in the forward planning of the mine. He also became a director of the Walter and Eliza Hall trust. He was noted for his charity and kindness and it was his efforts that the Trust formed the Medical division from Walter’s money. His sons were in France on active duty during the war and he had journeyed to London to see them but while returning to Australia in 1919 he died of pneumonia in Honolulu. His eldest son became Lord Casey and in 1965 he became Governor General of Australia.

Now for some notes on Kelso King, the other friend of Walters who with Casey we thank for their efforts with the Hall Trust. Kelso King 1853-1943, born in Sydney and became a very successful business man. He held high positions in Bank of New South Wales, Commercial Banking Co in various cities and he acted as gold buyer for that bank. He managed many companies and he was also a director of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company and other companies. It was in 1880-1 that he met Walter Hall through their interests in the Cobb and Co coaches.

After Walter’s death he became an original trustee of the Fund. King was a very active man involved in various organizations such as, Masonic Lodge, Boy Scouts, Royal Life Saving Society, St. John’s Ambulance Association and many more. He was knighted in 1929 and known as Sir Kelso.

This was in a box of junk I came across. As soon as I saw it, I was in love, it looks so cool. Some steampunk dude would like to get their hands on it for sure, but not on my watch.

It is a Battery Cell Tester, probably from the 1940s or 50s. Car batteries have cells in them; usually each battery has six cells. Each cell has two plates; one is made of lead, the other of lead dioxide. Each cell is able to produce about 2-volts of energy. In most car batteries you have six cells, and therefore a 12-volt battery. The plates are submerged in sulphuric acid that triggers a reaction between the two plates.

Back in the olden days, the car owner would have to check the battery every month or so. There were caps on top of the cells that unscrewed, the plates should be covered, if the plates were exposed, some water would be added to cover them. These days lots of batteries are sealed so most people never check them - so one day the car will not start, the RACQ is called and test the battery... one day every few years you are late for work.

Back to the old days, the caps would be taken off, the prongs on the cell tester would be placed into the acid. There is a gauge on the tester that would point to the state of the battery, weather it was dead, good or needing a charge.

This tester was made by Vane Electrical Instruments Pty Ltd in Sydney; this company was formed in 1940. The tester is called Model 102. It has a wooden handle, two steel prongs, connected by spring steel; the gauge is attached to the steel as well, so the electric charge will go through. The gauge is about 25 cm tall and 14 cm wide.

It is a good collectable and great piece of Aussie engineering.
