I’ve been there! Breastfeeding was as high on my list of “musts” as was having a baby. The two went hand in hand. But I had one difficulty after another. I was extremely overweight and less than two months away from my 40th birthday. I couldn’t produce enough milk to save my life (or my baby’s for that matter). I tried support groups at Kaiser, cried, prayed and agonized over the whole thing. I pumped, tried every nipple shield, used the Supplemental Nursing System™, and even had my lactation consultant spend the night. Later my sister who nursed 5 children also spent the night helping me. There seemed to be a consensus that there was nothing else I could do and that it was “okay” for me to let go of the dream (which for me had turned into a nightmare). I nursed and pumped for a total of 4 months and then gave it up reluctantly and eventually got over it. My child (now 10 years old) fortunately is the picture of health. She rarely has a sniffle. I never could really shake the feeling that my inability to nurse was from a combination of my weight, age, and lack of experience. It didn’t help that in the midst of a crying jag, my husband wondered out loud if the problem could be because I was 40. He meant well. Several years too late, I met childbirth educator and physical therapist, Sylvia Boyd. I had heard that she was also a breastfeeding guru, but I was beyond the nursing days and didn’t care to relive all those difficult emotions. But Sylvia, being passionate about helping to solve difficult nursing problems, wormed my story out of me. She asked me a few specific questions and before I knew it she had assessed that the problem was due to the circumstances of my baby’s birth. Without me telling her, she knew that my labor had been induced, that I had back labor, and that the baby hadn’t turned properly. There are informative articles on Sylvia’s website that speak of “optimal positioning”. Sylvia devotes much of her childbirth preparation classes to teach- ing moms proper moving and sitting techniques that can ease both delivery and breast- feeding challenges. She also focuses on seeing mom and baby soon after birth to assess if physical therapy is necessary. Physical thereapy can often relieve tension and lead to a successful breastfeeding experience. I didn’t have money to pay for a midwife, doula, nanny or housekeeper, but if I had known about Sylvia’s gift of resolving breastfeeding challenges, I would have borrowed money to get the help we needed. Her practice is in the Hayward area, which isn’t far when the results normally include breastfeeding successfully! World Breastfeeding WeekStarting breastfeeding within the 1st hour of birth is the first and most vital step towards reducing infant mortality rate. Save ONE million babies – beginning with ONE action, ONE hour support and ONE message: begin breast-feeding within ONE hour of birth!

A recent study has shown that if ALL women began breastfeeding within the 1st hour it would save ONE million of the 4 million new-born deaths. This study from rural Ghana, based on10,947 breast-fed singleton infants, has shown

starting breastfeeding within the 1st hour of birth reduced the infants’ risk of death. There was a marked increase in risk with increasing delay in initiation.

Benefits to both women and babies Timely initiation of breastfeeding is beneficial for both the baby and the mother because: • Colostrum provides the baby with nourishment (the baby

needs very little at this time – a few drops are enough) and thus, its first immunization.

• It helps the production of milk enough for the next feed. • It makes use of the baby’s sucking reflex (which is strongest

during the 1st hour) to establish proper latching. • It helps prevent blood loss in the women. • It provides the skin-to-skin contact and warmth that

babies need most, particularly premature and low-weight babies.

Fourth of July & Labor Day Diaper Delivery Schedule

We will be delivering as usual on these holidays. Please make sure to set your soiled diapers out the night before to assure we don’t miss your pick up. Your driver will likely be earlier than usual due to an increased number of families that will be out of town for the holidays.

Lycia models her Litewrap…nice, soft and stays in place…perfect for an angel.

Happy Tiny Tots boys and good friends, Julian and Owen, play ball in their cloth diapers on Julian’s birthday.

Earn Free Diaper ServiceThe number one way new customer’s hear about us is by YOU! We would like to say THANK YOU and give you

$15 for every new customer that you refer to us. They simply need to mention your name when they order the diaper service. There is no limit to the amount of referrals

19 month old Leonard is happy to play with his fresh cotton diapers.

13 month old Enzo likes the comfort of wearing nothing but his cotton diaper and Litewrap.

Sporting his Froggy Pond Super Whisper Wrap, Kyle W. asks, “All of these diapers just for me?”

At 2 ½ months, Kyle C. has graduated to the next size Super Whisper Wrap.

Easy Audit For Your Diaper CountAn easy way to have us audit your diaper inventory is to write a 2-word note on the label on the soiled bag before you set it outside - “25 left”, or whatever number of clean dia-pers are left in your home. These labels are cut off the diaper bag and turned into the of f ice after the soiled diaper counter counts your bag and writes the count on the la-bel. When we add up the number left + the soiled count + the number of dia-pers delivered that day, we can determine if your rotation is correct. Some customers do this every week. Some do it once a month.

CONGRATULATIONS to those who have graduated from diapers. Thank you for giving us the privilege to help out with some of the “dirty work”. We hope the diapering years have been a time of wonderful memories for your family.

Tendercare Flushable WipesFlushable and have a gentle hypoallergenic alcohol-free natural formula that contains natural aloe and vitamin E. 50 count $4.00 per pack; $43.00 per case (12 packs)

The only single-use diaper on the market today that doesn’t contain super absorbent gelling chemicals (AGM) is Tushies. They are a healthier single-use diaper than the Seventh Generation, Nature Boy & Girl, Tendercare Plus, the G Diaper, Whole Baby Diapers from Whole Foods, and the mainstream brands, but they offer no envi-ronmental benefits. Flushable diapers require the same amount of raw materials to produce, including crude oil, for just a few hours use. There is no such thing as an eco friendly single-use diaper.

See for yourself: Cut open the padding of a Tushies diaper and you’ll find a natural blend cotton and wood pulp fluff. Chemical-Free! Open the padding of any other disposable diaper and you can shake out white granules. These are the acrylic acid polymer salts. Put the granules in water and watch them turn into gel. This is the chemical connected with increased child asthma, increased scrotal tempera-ture and toxic shock syndrome.

Cleansing and Soothing WipesSpecially formulated to protect your baby’s tender skin. Wipes are soaked in an alcohol-free, no-rinse vegetable lotion that is well tolerated by the skin. Strong cloths leave skin clean, soft and moisturized. And they dis-pense one at a time like tissues! Re-sealable pack of 70 wipes $10.50

Always stretch out your new clips.

Cleansing Cloths Made of pure spun lace from England. These thick, extra-soft cloths are soaked in a mild, no-rinse, fragrance-free solution consisting of gentle moisturizers that tenderly soothe and hydrate sensitive skin. Safe for baby’s face, body and bottom. Pop-top pack of 72 wipes $9.50

Flushable Diaper LinersActs as a soft stay-dry barrier when placed between the diaper and the baby’s skin. Baby Size 7.6” X 10.9” (100 sheets) $8.00; (200 sheets) $13.00 Toddler Size 7.7” X 15.5” (100 sheets) $8.00

Helpful Hint: SnackTrapA super useful snack-trap-cup. The cup holds baby’s snacks and doesn’t let it fall all over the place. I use it for cheerios or other cereals when we are on the move. This way, my baby eats his snack in the stroller or in the car seat without a great mess. Isn’t that Great !? The snack-trap is sold usually in baby’s stores or online www.snacktrap.com
