Earth Day: Call To ActionApril 22, 2010 marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s resources.

Senator Gaylord Nelson, founder of Earth Day, gives the following summary of how 20 million participants were mobilized on that first Earth Day, “In September 1969, I announced that in the spring of 1970 there would be a nationwide grassroots demonstration on behalf of the environment and invited everyone to participate. The wire services carried the story from coast to coast. The response was electric. It took off like gangbusters. Telegrams, letters, and telephone inquiries poured in from all across the country. The American people finally had a forum to express their concern about what was happening to the land, rivers, lakes, and air - and they did so with spectacular exuberance.”

“Earth Day worked because of the spontaneous response at the grassroots level. We had neither the time nor resources to organize 20 million demonstrators and the thousands of schools and local communities. That was the remarkable thing about Earth Day. It organized itself.”

It’s 40 years later and the inspiration we can glean from Earth Day, 1970 is that each one of us can make a difference. By working together, we can affect change. We have more resources available than ever (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, forums, blogs, parenting support groups and more). Historically, grassroots efforts represent a powerful venue for personal expression of values and Earth Day, 1970 is a great example.

So where do we go from here? Can we do something that will produce significant results? The following are a few ideas for becoming involved in simple ways to live responsibly for the benefit of our earth’s resources. They are diaper related....but come on, we’re a diaper service, what do you expect! Cotton diapers are reusable. Reuse is second only to reduce on the hierarchy of sustainability: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

1. Join the Real Diaper Association (RDA) www.realdiaperassociation.org Start or join a local Real Diaper Circle (Tiny Tots will help you) Educate your Day Care provider about Cotton in Daycare

The RDA provides support and education to parents all across the U.S. for the use of simple, reusable cloth diapers. The mission of the Real Diaper Association is to put more babies in cloth diapers. They aim to create a cultural shift in understanding cloth diapers-their environmental impact, their ease of use, their accessibility, and their acceptability. The Association will help parents understand that cloth diapers are real diapers.

One of the current activities of the RDA is the promotion of Cloth Diapers in Daycare. They conducted a survey on the use of cloth diapers in daycare facilities. The responders were largely parents who had talked with daycare providers about their willingness to use cloth diapers on their children while caring for them.

The Daycare tip sheet includes practical advice about finding a daycare provider and talking with them about your diapers, and specific options you could consider to make it work for both of you. It also has links for parents to inform themselves about state daycare regulations and about proper sanitation practices for changing diapers in a daycare facility. The tip sheet is available on the RDA website in a printable PDF format at www.realdiaperassociation.org.

Tiny Tots has a list of Daycares in the Bay Area that accept cotton diapers at, http://tinytots.com/diaperservice/providers.html. If you know of a Daycare that accepts cotton that isn't listed, please ask them to fill out the web form to be listed. Also, when your child attends a day care center that uses Tiny Tots, you can receive $6 off your diaper service each 4 week period. Coupon is located on Daycare page.

2. Get involved in bringing Real Nappy Week to the U.S. This event originated in the UK in 1999 with the objective of raising awareness of environmentally friendly alternatives to single-use nappies (diapers). More info is available at http://www.goreal.org.uk/.

“Cotton Babies On The Go” 2011 Photo Calendar Contest

Since the 2010 calendar was such a fun and creative success, Tiny Tots is creating a 2011 calendar featuring “cotton babies on the go”. This means recognizable locations, points of interest, and accessories that go beyond the home and yard.
