Urban District Council, Registrar of Deal County Court etc. He died on January 16th, 1942 aged 81. He had an extensive library and worked together with W. P. D. Stebbing on researching the Sea Valley at Deal and Stonar. He also researched Ringwould and Nonington parishes. He was a prominent member of the KAS for many years and a member of the Council. He was also a friend of Gordon Ward.

Hardman, F. W. Dr. PMP Box 25 Correspondence from the years 1914- 1935 between Mr. E.G. Box, Oak Cottage, St. Botolph’s Road Sevenoaks, and Dr. F.W. Hardman LL.D., F.S.A. (died 1942). Mr. E.G. Box was the author of several articles in Arch. Cant. on Otford, Ancient Maps and roads ( Arch.Cant. vol. 38, 39, 43, and 45). Correspondence from the years 1928 to 1938 between Dr. Gordon Ward and Dr. F. W. Hardman. The correspondence pertains to research interests during those years and includes discussions on field and place names and Saxon Charters. The following locations are discussed: Deal, Otford, Nonnington, Hoo, Sevenoaks and Tonbridge. Notes on The Manor of Elham. Notes on St. Martin’s Church Guston.

Dr. F.W. Hardman was a very prominent member of The Kent Archaeological Society and a member of the Council for many years. Hardman’s obituary can be found in Arch. Cant. vol. 55, 1942, p. 79.

Lucas, Mr. Geoffry PMP Box 13 Plans of Churches from England and abroad- some plans are annotated. There are also images of 13th century construction work and two master masons. Mr. Lucas was interested in Church types and had a theory that all Medieval Churches were based on an underlying system of squares. The plans here are made in relation to this theory. (38 items)

Halford L. Mills (1843-1931) started researching local history late in life. He was born in Smarden, but left for London as a young man and also spent time in America where he learnt the techniques of embalming. Later he returned to London and ran a funeral parlour. He was also involved in coach building and owned a small farm. In the 1920s he returned to Claggett House in Smarden and started researching local history. His book on Smarden was intended as a tribute to and

Minty, R.G.P. PMP Box 13 Sketches of Kent churches and aspects of their interiors and fittings, mostly done in 1847 and 1848. There is also a section which mainly contains sketches of Norfolk churches, their interiors and fittings as well as drawings of archaeological finds.

A resident of Norwich, Norfolk, and local secretary to the Norfolk and Norwich Archaeological Society in 1849. Found among the papers of W.P.D. Stebbing in PMP Box 13 St. 13 and PMP Box 13 St. 14. In Box 21 is found the headed notepaper of E. Arden Minty F.R.I.B.A., Architect, 47 Victoria Street, Westminster S.W.1 and Petersfield, Hants. Could this be a relation?

Stebbing, W. P. D. PMP Box 13 W. P. D. Stebbing L.R.I.B.A. , FSA, J.P. (1873 -1961) The papers in this box include notebooks on antiquarian and amusing topics, letters and photos relating to the excavation of a Late Bronze Age Entrenchment at Upper Deal in 1934. It also contains material for the study of Northbourne, Woodnesborough and Hoard Farm as well as Oxney by Dover, Stonar, Deal and Walmer. Dover, Deal and Sandown Castles are well represented in the papers, but the majority of the papers are on various aspects of Deal’s history, including Nicholas and Elizabeth Carter, the Three manors of Deal, Brewing, Crime and Punishment, the Water supply, Sanitation and health, St. Leonard’s Parish Church, The topography and old houses of Deal as well as smuggling and Clay Pipe manufacture.

PMP Box 12 also includes material by other people utilised by W.P.D. Stebbing in his researches. There are notes by Arthur Hussey, Church plans by Mr. Geoffry Lucas, and a collection of sketches by R.G.P. Minty. Some of W.P.D. Stebbing’s papers are held at Dover Museum, these are primarily those connected with the museum established in Deal Castle, but do also include a few on the excavations Dover.

Also contains a notebook on various aspects of the Yoke, such as place names, the occurrence of Yokes in Charters, derived words and definitions. The area research most thoroughly is Otford and Wye.

Dr. Gordon Ward F.S.A. (1885 – 1962) Dr. Gordon Ward was a member of the KAS from 1927. He joined the Council in 1931 and became an honorary life member in 1954. His research interest were wide, taking in topography, place names, the Vikings, administrative units and Wealden dens, to name but a few. From 1935 onwards he started to give part of his collection to Kent County Archives and the KAS. Shortly before his death he bequeathed 60 boxes of papers relating to the history of various Kent Villages to the KAS and PMP Box 17 is likely to have been
