Page 2: ROAD: RAIL: OPENING TIMES AND PRICES BUS - Chislehurst Caveschislehurst-caves.co.uk/Chislehurst Caves Leaflet.pdf · The caves at Chislehurst are a labyrinth of man made tunnels,

The caves at Chislehurst are a labyrinth of man madetunnels, forming a maze covering over 6 Hectares and areup to 30 metres below the homes and woodlands above. They were dug for chalk, used in lime burning and brickmaking for the Building of London, also for flints to firethe tinderboxes and flintlock guns of years ago.

First open to the public in 1900 as a showplace, theguides told the Victorians history of Romans, Druids andSaxons, Smuggling and Murder.

The last 100 years has added munitions storage for theWoolwich Arsenal in the1914-18 war. Mushroom growingin the 1920 & ‘30’s and becoming an underground town asthe largest deep air-raid shelter outside London, protecting over 15000 people every night during the Blitz. In the 1950, ‘60’s and ‘70’s as a venue for dances andconcerts, presenting the foundations of Jazz, Skiffle andFolk music to the most famous names in pop and rock.

And now, still as a tourist attraction & education centrewith a gift shop and Café catering for visitors, groupoutings, evening functions and children’s parties.

CAVES CAFÉ AND SHOPServing home cooked meals, snacks and teas from 9:30amand the gift shop for books and souvenirs. Have you thoughtof having your child’s next birthday party at the caves? Youcan have your own private tour followed by a buffet meal inthe Caves Café (probably not suitable for children underseven years old).

Ideal for school trips all year, the weather is no problemunderground. We can arrange private tours for groups of all kinds, including extended evening tours with a meal in the licensed café.

There is inside seating by the gift shop and outside picnictables for consumption of your own food or packed lunches.

All visitors or groups under the age of 16 must be accom-panied by at least one adult per six children. Risk Assessmentdetails and template are available on our website.

A tour of the caves may not be suitable for those of a verynervous disposition or with an acute fear of darkness.

Access through the caves for the disabled and those withpushchairs is possible, but the floor is uneven and the tourcovers a distance of about a mile. The car park, café, shop andtoilets are fully accessible.
