Salem, and Student Branch, M.P. Nachimuthu M. Jaganathan Engineering College, Erode organized a
Student Skill Development Program (SSDP) for Students on the topic of Artificial Intelligence Methods in
Engineering and Soft Computing Tools in Engineering. These two programs proved to be an excellent
opportunity to listen to the experts in this field and also to discuss basics and advanced concepts of Soft
Computing Techniques in Engineering. These program enabled the participants to exchange their
knowledge in Techniques applied to various engineering problem domains. The SSDP was an invaluable
experience for the students. Around 116 students from various colleges participated in this program.
iii) Teacher in Service Program(TISP)
Teaching-Learning is an important process in academic institutions. Transfer of knowledge takes place
from the teacher to the students only when the teaching is effective. As a service to the teaching
community, IEEE Madras Section under educational activity had organized Teacher In-service program
(TISP). This program served as an excellent opportunity to increase the level of understanding among the
pre- university educators. It enhanced the level of technological literacy of pre-university educators and
gave guidance to pre-university educators on professional development areas that students need. It
identified ways on how the pre-university educators can assist schools and school system in technological
literacy. About 82 teachers participated from various schools and got benefited.

IEEE Madras Women in Engineering organizes Green Technology Entrepreneurial Model for Tribaldevelopment With support from Region 10 Women in Engineering And IEEE Women in EngineeringCommittee
29
The greatest challenge in India is proper provision of social justice to the rural and tribal people,by ameliorating their socio-economic conditions. They constitute the weakest section of India's population, from the ecological, economic and educational perspective. Madras IEEE Women in Engineering hasdeveloped a special model to provide self employment training to the Tribes in villages near Coimbatoreand developing entrepreneurial skills among them so as to improve their socio economic conditions.
In this project the people from different age groups and different educational qualifications aresegregated to focus on the best programs suited to them and this increases the productivity better. Some ofthe training programs proposed are paper bag, paper plate and cups Manufacturing, Coir Rope making,Mosquito coils manufacturing, Banana fiber products making, Organic Farming, handicrafts making etcfor girls and ladies with poor educational background and computer and electrical appliances training forpeople with good educational qualifications.
As a first step, the Madras IEEE WIE along with KCT student branch in collaboration with theEcogreen unit of Tamilnadu Agricultural University organized an awareness program in the governmentschool at Kembanaickenpalayam to promote the uses of banana fibre which serves as a base for everythingfrom making handbags to full fledged clothes.
The aim of organizing this event was to bring to light the multifarious uses of banana fibre to therural masses. During the initial market study conducted by Madras IEEE WIE, it was found that thoughthere is a very good market for the goods the supply does not match the demand. So a model wasdeveloped to bring the supply equivalent to demand. For this it was decided that the rural masses can bereached through the school children. So the first programme was organized for the school children withtheir parents.
The first phase of the project ended with educating them with the design and development ofvarious products using banana fibre following with some networking sessions like quiz and groupactivities which were taken up with enthusiasm by the students.
The second phase was started as full fledged training programs for women and parents in twoplaces. First project is Coir products making Training at Bodipalayam, which is a rural village 15 Kmaway from pollachi town. The training is for 15 days. Mrs.Laila Trainer, Coir board, Govt. of India is awell experienced faculty in coir products making. She encouraged the participants initially to make asimple coir product each. Mrs.Manju motivated 14participants to join in this training program. Majorityof the participants are school drop outs, widows and separated women. They expressed that this trainingprogramme improves their socio economic status and increase their self confidence.
Second project is a training program of Jute bag making at Pollachi. Ms.Roopini is the projectcoordinator. She also helps the people by arranging loans from national bank, NABARD etc., for sustaineddevelopment and maps the pupils for training according to their interest and current job. In this Training 15Tailors have participated. Mrs.Sri Devi, Trainer of this program, has more than 6 years experience in Jutebag making. Since the participants are already tailors, they simply grasp and learn quickly the jute bagmaking. They are very happy to attend this programme, because it gives them a supplement earning duringthe off season periods and paves the way for a stable income throughout the year.
