Successful Parent Programmes Presentat ion to IDPE June 2013
Overview
• Should we be asking parents to give philanthropically to our institutions?
• If so…
– why?
– how?
– when?
Should we be asking parents?
Why?
• We have 3000 addressable alumni
• We have roughly 10%-15% that number of parents, but they change over 7-15 years
• Of our top 10 gifts in the past 5 years, 4 have come from parents (or now former parents)
• 1/3 of all our gifts have come from parents
How
When I want to speak to Parents
Who do I call?
The power of cake
Other low input ideas
I hate events…
• Seriously, I hate them
• “A tedious way to spend what little family time you have at School”
• Most parents seem to love them though
• One or two big events can set you up for the year if you have the constituency to do it
• Twists on the old favourite the auction
Well not all events
How to ask parents?
Other stuff other people do
• Ask for an “opt out” donation on the bill
• Loyalty Card
• Headmaster’s pledge
• Parents Handbook
• Involved in new parents welcome
• Prospectus
Key Points
• Parents are great donors
– They have already bought in to your institution
– They want to see quick change
• They can be generous MGPs
• Some Schools only fundraise from parents
• Parents are part of the School Community
• “Community Fundraising” can be a great base
