For Spencerport native, “the offi ce” is Yankee Stadiumby Kristina Gabalski
Despite up and down play, the New York Yankees are having a winning season so far in 2015, and Aaron Patella Ryan continues to enjoy his work as bat boy for the team.
This is the Spencerport native’s third season in the job, and Aaron says he continues to be grateful and feels fortu-nate that for him, going to “the offi ce” means heading to Yankee Stadium.
“I have the best boss I will ever have and my co-workers are awesome. I’m happy to be with them,” he says of the Yankees organization. “I’ve had the op-portunity to meet a lot of cool people .... stars and movie stars. As a life-long Yankees fan, I never thought I would be here.”
Alex Rodriguez, who sat out the en-tire 2014 season after being suspended for using performance enhancing drugs, is back in the line-up this year. A-Rod has not been a fan favorite, but his per-formance so far this season is helping to bring fans around, and Aaron says he has been amazed at A-Rod’s knowledge of the game.
“A-Rod is the smartest person I’ve ever listened to talk about baseball,” Aaron says. “He knows things that would blow you away. I hear him in the dugout talking to and coaching other players and think, ‘wow, I’ve never picked up on what he’s talking about.’”
Aaron describes a game in early May when A-Rod hit home run number 661, surpassing Willie Mays for fourth place on the all-time home run list.
After the home run, Aaron had re-trieved the bat for the major league au-thenticator (since 2001 MLB has used an authentication program to ensure the legitimacy of game-used memora-bilia), who realized A-Rod might want to continue to use the bat during the rest of the game.
“Baseball players are superstitious,” Aaron says. “He hit the home run dur-ing his second at-bat of the game. In his fi rst at-bat, he technically hit a home run, but was robbed at the wall.”
An outfi elder had reached over the wall to catch A-Rod’s fi rst-up hit, Aaron explains. Baseball players don’t like to stop using a bat if it is bringing them luck, he says.
“I brought the bat to him and told him the authenticator thought he might like to keep using it,” Aaron says. A-Rod then spent several moments, “... standing, feeling the bat, looking at it and checking it out. He was struggling to make up his mind. He decided to put it in his locker.”
Aaron also got to see Derek Jeter the fi rst time he retuned to the stadium on May 24 for the retirement of teammate Bernie Williams’ number 51.
“He went around the clubhouse,” Aaron says of Jeter, who retired at the end of last season. “He was smiling when he came up to me. He shook my hand, it was so cool to see him again.”
Aaron also remembers Jeter’s magical last at-bat at Yankee Stadium last Sep-tember 25, when he hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 9th inning to win the game, 6-5 over the Orioles.
Aaron says he was not surprised by the game winning hit because Jeter had al-ways been a clutch moment player.
“I was standing with (fi rst baseman) Mark Teixeira to my right and the ball boy on the other side and I remember saying to myself he was going to do it,” Aaron says. “He had done it his entire career and there was no other way to end his career.” Aaron says it was amazing to be a part of the moment following the hit. “We were jumping up and down and high-fi ving. Everyone was going crazy.”
Additionally, Aaron was able to travel with the team to Boston for Jeter’s fi nal series and game. “My boss took me to Boston, it was a pretty cool experience,” Aaron says.
“I do love this job,” he adds. “It’s hard to swallow I might not be doing this next
year.” (Aaron has to apply each yearfor the bat boy job).
He especially loves seeing the camara-derie between the players - the way they interact after a big win, or when they give everyone a fi st-dap (fi st-pound) be-fore the game.
“It’s fun being around the players,” he says.
Editor’s note: Aaron Patella Ryan is a 2008 graduate of McQuaid Jesuit High School and a 2012 Iona College gradu-ate. He is the son of Westside News Inc. owner Keith Ryan and his wife, Fran-cine, and the brother of Kiri Patella Ryan of Spencerport. When the team is on the road and in the off season, Aaron is em-ployed by Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
Top left, Alex Rodriguez and Aaron check out the bat A-Rod used when he hit homerun #661 to pass Willie Mays for fourth all-time spot on the homerun record list. Right, Aaron with Paul O’Neill and Tino Martinez at “Old Timers Day” last year. Bottom left, Derek Jeter gives Aaron a pre-game dap before he took the fi eld for his fi nal home game last season.

40th year for Farmers Market in North ChiliThe Farmers Market at the United Methodist Church
of North Chili, 2200 Westside Drive, North Chili is open-ing for it’s 40th season on June 20 and will continue Sat-urdays through October 31.
In its 40 years, the market has attracted vendors from near and far away. Currently vendors from as close as Whittier Road in Ogden and from places such as Kend-all, Holley, Scottsville and many other locations in this general area attend each week. And Amish friends bring
their baked goods from Ovid. A vendor from Hinsdale comes and is a favorite during blueberry season and we have added a new vendor that will be coming all the way from Hornell. All of our vendors are very special to us and to the continued success of the market, says the current Market Manager Roger Dart.
The market is open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Parking is ample and free.

Suburban News - North Edition - June 14, 2015 3Grease Paint clowns attend convention
Grease Paint Alley Clowns from Greece (NY) attended the Clowns of America In-ternational (COAI) conven-tion in Erie, Pennsylvania. Along with clowns from several countries, as well as the United States, the Alley members attended semi-nars on various aspects of clowning, including hospital clowning, make-up, costum-ing, ‘paradeability’, balloon sculpting, face painting and skits. Grease Paint Alley members also participated in several competition cat-egories, some for the first time. Alley president Cheryl (Gabby) Arnold won her first ribbon with a 6th place in Auguste make-up. First-time group skit competitors Paula (Jewelz) Mattison, Maureen (Buttons) Morgan, Donna (Spring-a-Doodle) Gutowski, Sallye (Puddlz) Stutzman, and skit direc-tor Bev Bryant won second place for their skit “Gone Fishing.”
COAI exists to promote clowning skills at the grass-roots level through educat-ing and training local clown organizations called “al-leys.” Grease Paint Alley has been bringing smiles and comfort for over 35 years to local area com-munities through its par-ticipation with the Golisano (Strong) Children’s Hos-pital, CURE (a childhood cancer organization), nurs-ing homes, local volunteer fire companies, veterans groups, as well as being trained by the Red Cross and Red Nose Responders, to bring comfort to disaster victims.
Grease Paint Alley, as well as COAI, welcomes people of all ages to its clown organization. There was a 94 year old active COAI member at the con-vention who won several competition awards. Grease Paint Alley currently has five junior joeys (clowns), with plans to expand this program, as well as train-
ing for interested adults through the alley’s clown classes.
If bringing smiles and laughter to others is of interest to you, you can
contact Grease Paint Alley Clowns at P.O. Box 26679, Rochester, NY 14626, or call (585) 234-4711.

Editor’s note #1:It’s been an honor and a privilege to work as the editor of this grassroots community publication. Looking back over three decades of local issues, events and projects provides not only a trip down memory lane but also brings the pro-found realization that we get by with (a lot of) help from our friends.
A job that started as very part-time as a means to help pay for dental braces for two children who are now in their 40s and have their own gold standard health insurance (and straightened teeth), became full-time with the addition of the Hamlin-Clarkson Herald and then the West Edi-tion of Suburban News. In 1984, when I became editor after a couple years of doing freelance writing, type was set on a huge Compugraphic word processor into which various vinyl font style strips were loaded. The typesetter could see about 13 characters at a time on a small screen. An improved version of the machine added a larger screen and the ability to set blocks of type for advertising. The machines’ photo paper had to be processed in a chemical bath to reveal (develop) the type on the emulsion.
In the case of ad creation, all art elements and type had to be cut with X-Acto® knives and run through a waxer that melted beeswax to create the needed sticky under-surface to adhere the designed message to layout paper. It is not a joke that you might cut out a single letter from a correction strip to fix up a typo. If you needed a scaled down version of a graphic, or a larger version, you would measure the original and match up those dimensions to the desired size (height or width) on a two-layered repro-duction wheel and then program the percentage info into a room-sized camera in the dark room to get the desired art element. Then everything was waxed again (one side only) and burnished well with a roller to keep everything together as the pages had to travel to the press by car or truck in all kinds of weather and the hard work needed to stay firmly in place enroute.
When a copier arrived in the workplace, it could handle graphic-sizing needs more simply, and soon after that, the arrival of the computer allowed font changes with ease and permitted astounding options in graphic libraries and images. From then on, changes in opportunities to create seemed to escalate.
Obviously things have changed and being involved in the process has helped keep the mind working, I maintain. I was amazed when we printed our first process color pho-tograph on a front page and offered full color advertising possibilities. Today entire pages are uploaded to the press electronically. The week (not too long ago it seems) when we made digital files of every page of the four editions achieved a new level of sophistication and expertise for a small staff. All who worked on the effort appreciated that was another milestone, a marker in time to which we could not return. In other words, we knew we would be making a lot of PDF files every week from then on!
So, there have been changes galore for this grassroots newspaper delivered at no charge to over 30,000 house-holds each week. Free. Newspaper. I have been proud of it and grateful to work with dedicated and talented people – friends. More about them next week. For now, accept this as an announcement that I am leaving the job of edi-tor for these newspapers at the end of the month.
“It’s been the best job anyone could possibly have. I con-sider myself so very lucky,” Newman Riga Library Direc-tor Donna Haire wrote in an email shortly after she de-cided late last year to leave her job of three decades. Like mine, her job was unique. So I borrow her words because they express my sentiments exactly about my job as edi-tor of Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald.

Garden grows a sense of communityby Kristina Gabalski
The front lawn of the First Presbyterian Church of Brockport, 35 State Street in the village, is a special place. It’s home to the Brockport Community Garden - a peaceful and productive spot open for sharing to anyone who passes-by.
The garden was weeded, prepped and planted for the 2015 growing season on Saturday, May 30, and many members from the community came to take part - includ-ing the Brockport Blue Devils JV and Varsity Football Teams.
“They (team members) eat their pre-game dinners at the church,” work-day organizer Anita Mault says. “We feed them during the season and they pay us back with hard work and sweat in the summertime. You could say one hand feeds the other.”
The garden is planted with an amazing selection of veg-etables and edible flowers including squash, tomatoes, cu-cumbers, lettuce, carrots, Swiss chard and more.
Anita says the garden is chemical-free and draws the at-tention of residents and passers-by.
“It’s amazing how many people stop by and ask questions,” she says. “It’s neat to have people stop. The kids get right in there and want to help.”
The garden now consists of eight neat and tidy raised beds with mulched paths in between. The gar-
den has grown to twice the size of when it began, Anita says, and there is the desire to expand it further in the future.
She grows many of the veggies from seed for transplant-ing in the garden and other plants are donated. “We grow very little from seed directly in the garden,” she says.
Anyone can help work to maintain the garden over the growing season and all are invited to partake of the healthy harvest. There are a few ground rules: If it is ripe, eat it; share with others; if you are sure it’s a weed, pull it, if not, let it grow; if it is wilting, water it - a hose is avail-able on the right side of the building; if you see a problem, fix it or call the church at 637-3780; spread the word and celebrate the beauty of God’s garden.
The plantings are planned with “companion gardening” concepts in mind. Organizers say that means planting complimentary vegetables together and including annu-als to attract beneficial insects and reduce weeds.
The purpose of the garden is to bring members of the community closer together and improve the collective quality of life.
According to the garden’s website (brockportcommuni-tygarden.weebly.com) the garden features fresh vegeta-bles needed for a healthy diet; acknowledges obstacles that keep families from eating healthy foods such as ex-pense, lack of time, skill, space and awareness; plantings help to show what is possible - to help people imagine their own gardens and menu options outside of processed and packaged foods; provides an opportunity to distribute recipes using the produce grown; provides opportunities to practice garden skills and provides a place to exchange knowledge and ideas.
The Brockport Community Garden is worth a visit when you are in the Brockport area. You can pull a few weeds, sample some fresh produce and even get inspired for your own garden.

Opinion/Comments
Thanks to the newStrong West of Brockport
This is a thank you to Strong/Strong West and the staff of Brockport.
On May 30, everyone was invited to visit and tour the new cancer center on the second floor of what used to be Lakeside Hospital’s ICU. I attended alongside my son and close friend as so many others did. It is beautiful. It had a calming, relaxing effect on us as I’m sure it did the rest of the folks. We all knew, finally, that there is something good once again to replace the Lakeside we all knew it as.
As I walked up the hallway, I came across the last room on the right, now a doctor’s office. Twelve years ago this was the same room where my husband was told that he had lung cancer and had only two months to live. They could do no more for him, so he came home and lived those last two months.
I hope to never have cancer, but if I do, it will make me feel safe and happy knowing I’ll be in good hands right here in Brockport. It is a good feeling to know that I, along with my family, won’t have to worry about going into the city hospitals for help anymore, which in itself doesn’t feel very safe. But here you are. Any doctor you need right here and all around the Brockport area. So I applaud Strong West for making this happen. Sometime in the future, whatever you bring to the third floor will one day be just as good as the rest. It’s something that Brockport and everyone can be proud of, knowing that Strong West is here.

Diversions Hilton District Improvement Team reaches out to religious leaders
The Hilton District Improvement Team (DIT) recently held a luncheon to give religious leaders in the community an opportunity to learn more about the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme and to talk about the connection they see between what they learned about IB and their ministry.
After enjoying lunch and conversation, the group watched a video about the IB Learner Profile and heard presentations by Tim Dobbertin, Merton Williams Middle School principal, and Dr. Barbara Surash, assistant superintendent for instruction. Each table engaged in a group discussion and then shared out their findings.
Dr. Myke Merrill, senior pastor at Parma Christian Fellowship Church, said it’s helpful for the community to know about the terms associated with IB, such as “risk taking,” which may have a negative connotation in some situations. Risk taker is one of the 10 IB learner
profile traits that students strive to be and is defined as “approaching uncertainty with forethought and determination; working independently and cooperatively to explore new ideas and innovative strategies; and being resourceful and resilient in the face of challenges and change.”
Attendees left with information packets that included a brochure outlining the Approaches to Learning - Communication, Social, Self-Management, Research and Thinking - the skills involved with each and how they may relate to a student’s faith.
The DIT will be reaching out to business, education and political leaders in the community in the near future.

He replaces retiring Chief Douglas Nordquist. K. Gabalski photos.
Need A New Tube? You can pick one up at our office,
1776 Hilton-Parma Corners Road, Route 259, just north of Route 104 (Ridge Road).
Look for the log cabin. Our hours are Monday-Thursday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Suggestion: If you are in a windy area, it would help if you put a piece of duct tape on the back of the tube to prevent the paper from blowing out.

DOT holds publichearing regarding390/490/Lyell Avenue Interchange in Gates
The New York State De-
partment of Transporta-tion (NYSDOT) has sched-uled a public hearing to seek input on the preferred alternative to address trav-el conditions in the area where interstates 490 and 390 and Lyell Avenue con-verge in the Town of Gates. The hearing will be held on Thursday, June 25 at the Gates Town Hall, 1605 Buffalo Road.
Prior to the start of the formal hearing, DOT will hold an informational meeting in an open house format from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. in the Town Hall An-
nex. The open house will feature informational dis-plays about each aspect of the project and staff will be on hand to answer ques-tions from the public. The official public hearing will convene at 7:30 p.m. in a separate Town Hall meet-ing room where verbal comments will be recorded and written comments will be received. Comments received by July 7 will be made part of the official project record and evalu-ated prior to finalizing the design alternative.
The updated Draft De-sign Report/Environmental
Assessment is available for public review. It is a com-prehensive document that presents details of the pre-ferred design alternative along with all the required supporting engineering evaluations and environ-mental studies. A copy is available for viewing at the Gates Public Library, 902 Elmgrove Road, or at the DOT Regional Office, 1530 Jefferson Road, Henrietta. Portions of the report are also available on the proj-ect website at www.dot.ny.gov/390Lyell.
Although project con-struction would be done in multiple stages over several years, approval for the entire project needs to be in place to move for-ward. Construction of the project’s first phase would replace the Lyell Avenue Bridge over Route 390.
Among highlights of the project design proposed un-der this alternative: replac-ing the Lyell Avenue Bridge over Route 390, the Buffalo Road bridge over I-390, and the Route 390 bridges over Trolley Boulevard.
The location for the meeting is accessible to people with disabilities. Contact Rick Burgwardt at 585-272-4815 or via e-mail at [email protected] for information.

FAIR COMPARISONS
www.burgerfuneralhome.com
One advantage of funeral preplanning is the opportunity to compare prices and services. Doing so contrasts sharply with a situation in which family members feel forced to make decisions when a loved one dies without preplanning. While preplanning allows for budgetary considerations, it is important not to base decisions on cost alone. As any consumer knows, cost does not always reflect the full measure of the people and services that stand behind the product. Trustworthiness, sensitivity, support, experience, and quality all count for much as well. With this in mind, it is best to visit with a funeral director in order to gauge
the human connection that will best serve you at this most human of moments.
THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME offers pre-arrangement planning and personalized funeral services to accommodate everyone’s wishes and budget. We also offer a wide assortment of caskets, monuments, containers, and personalization items to help enable families to create a wonderful tribute to the life of their loved one. For more information, please call 585-392-7100. We are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, and we are located at 735 East Avenue. Family owned and trusted since 1976.
