Brockport community remembers Eunice Chesnutby Kristina Gabalski

“It’s hard to say enough about her, it’s a great loss to the community.”

Those words, spoken by Brockport Deputy Mayor Bill Andrews about Eunice Chesnut, are being echoed throughout the community by those who fondly remember the former historian at the Western Monroe Historical Society/Mor-gan-Manning House, who died Sunday, April 10 in New York City at the age of 90.

Eunice retired from her historian post at WMHS less than two years ago, after serving there for 37 years, and moved out of the area in 2015 to be close to her family.

Andrews, a Western Monroe Historical Society trustee and historian emeritus for Brockport, called Chesnut a, “won-derful local historian ... she maintained a fabulous clipping file of Brockport area history, which I often made use of, and which was housed at the Morgan-Man-ning House. She was a very witty, very gracious person, hardworking and cre-ative,” Andrews said. “She was a founder of the Fourth of July Celebration, which has been a tremendous success.”

Eunice also began the popular annual Peddler’s Market at the Morgan-Man-ning House. During a retirement recep-tion in 2014, then WMHS president Alicia Fink called Eunice, “... the soul of the Western Monroe Historical Society.”

Eunice was a prolific writer about local history - with nine books to her credit. She compiled a two volume Encyclope-dia of Brockport, which includes the stories of almost 2,000 people, back to the earliest settlers of the Brockport area.

Archie and Patty Kutz, former own-ers of the Lift Bridge Book Shop in Brockport, have many happy memories of Eunice. “As booksellers in Brockport, we enjoyed the many years we knew and worked with Eunice as she was publish-ing her books,” they said. “We had a lot of fun, from the initial joy of knowing a new title was on the way to the time her

In addition to the Encyclopedia of Brockport, Eunice’s other books includ-ed topics on food (Hoe Cakes to Ham-burgers), incidents and entertainments in the village (That Reminds Me), and a history of Lakeside Hospital (Quality Care Close to Home).

Gary Skoog, former Western Monroe Historical Society president, knew Eunice for many years.

“She was incredibly helpful teaching me about the history of the Morgan-Man-ning House and the Society when I was a new Board member and then president,” Skoog remembered. “Eunice was very creative, highly intelligent, thoughtful and sensitive. A MATTER OF RESPECT

While it might seem to be unnecessary to remind people of the appropriate ways for funeral attendees to conduct themselves, ever relaxing standards of dress and behavior sometimes make it necessary to do so. The guiding principle behind any matter of funeral etiquette is that all in attendance are there to remember and honor the deceased. In accordance with the behavior that should be demonstrated at this once-in-a-lifetime event, every effort should be made to be well groomed and appropriately dressed. It also must be mentioned that a funeral is neither the

time nor the place for disruptive words, noise, or behavior. If anything, silence is preferred, especially with regard to cell phones, which should be left outside.

The bereaved and other funeral attendees should wear dark, semi-formal clothing, such as a suit and tie for men or a dress for women. To learn more, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585-392-7100. We are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, and we are located at 735 East Avenue. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

DiversionsHilton CSD Board of Education adopts new Budget Proposal

At its regular meeting on April 12, the Hilton Central School District Board of Education adopted a $79.9 million budget proposal for the 2016-17 school year. This is a 3.97 percent in-crease over last year’s bud-get, which will result in an estimated 0.4 percent tax rate decrease in all district towns if approved by voters on May 17. The decrease in the tax rate is due to addi-tional state aid.

“I am proud of this year’s proposed budget. The pro-cess was transparent and valued all stakeholders’ input,” said Superintendent Casey Kosiorek. “This pro-posed plan is responsible to the taxpayers and also provides great opportunities for our students.”

The adopted budget qual-ifies Hilton School District residents for a property tax rebate because it is under the state imposed Property Tax Levy Cap. For most property owners, this serves as approximately three per-cent of their annual school taxes paid.

Details of the budget will be available on the Hilton District website at www.hilton.k12.ny.us/budget-profile.htm. Residents will receive a budget newsletter through the mail in May and a list of budget presen-tations will be posted on the website.

On Tuesday, May 17, dis-trict residents can vote on the budget proposition as

High School (Parma, Clark-son and Hamlin residents) and Northwood Elementary School (Greece residents) will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Voters must be registered with the Monroe County Board of Elections or with District Clerk Julie Norris (392-1000, ext. 7099) to vote on May 17. Handi-capped accessible parking is available.

Provided information

well as a $1,373,294 bus purchase proposition and four open positions on the Board of Education. Voters will select three board mem-bers to serve three-year terms and one board mem-ber to serve the remaining two years of Dan Welling-ton’s term. The terms of Michelle Ames, Barbara Cutrona and Nancy Picker-ing will expire June 30.

Locals represented Rochester in annual tournamentby Warren Kozireski

Four Brockport High and two Hilton Cadets were among the Rochester senior and junior rosters for the 12th annual Scotty Bowman Showcase, which took place on Sunday, April 10 at First Niagara Center.

The Scotty Bowman Showcase consists of all-star hockey games between high school-aged players from the Buffalo and Rochester areas.

Hilton senior Jesse Edwards and Frank Gaffney and Brockport senior Mitchell Henshaw battled Buffalo based seniors while Brockport juniors Alec Rockow, Patrick Viscardi and Walden Grady did the same.

Gaffney led the Cadets in goals (15) and points (41) - good for fourth in Division II while Edwards led Hilton with 17 assists while garnering 30 points.

Henshaw led the Blue Devils with 42 points, good for third in Division II, with a team-high 16 goals and 26 assists. Viscardi and Rockow had 29 and 23 points respectively.

The first game began at 11 a.m. with high school ju-niors from the two cities facing off against one another for the Tim Horton Memorial Cup. The next game followed at 1 p.m. between high school seniors from each city.

Rochester beat Buffalo in both games and was awarded the Scotty Bowman Cup, named after Buf-falo Sabres former head coach Scotty Bowman, the winningest coach in NHL history. Bowman was in at-tendance to present the Bowman Cup to the victorious senior team.

Brockport Police Department taking back unwanted prescription drugs

On April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Brockport Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Admin-istration (DEA) will give the public its 11th opportunity in six years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring pills for dis-posal to the Brockport P.D. at 1 Clinton Street. (The DEA cannot accept liquids or needles or sharps, only pills or patches). The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Last September, Americans turned in 350 tons (over 702,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at more than 5,000 sites operated by the DEA and more than 3,800 of its state and local law enforcement partners. Overall, in its 10 previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners have taken in over 5.5 million pounds - more than 2,750 tons - of pills.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarm-ingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.

Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs come from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, the DEA now ad-vises Americans that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines - flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash - both pose potential safety and health hazards.

For more information about the disposal of prescription drugs or about the April 30 Take Back Day event, go to the DEA Diversion website.

Grow your vegetablesand conduct valuable researchby Kristina Gabalski

I’m sure enthusiastic vegetable growers have already made many choices for this year’s garden and probably started seeds for favorites like peppers and tomatoes, but I hope you might be open to a few sugges-tions and also be interested in how you can help Cornell University conduct research into garden vegetable varieties as part of one of its Citizen Science programs.

First, here are a few of the many 2016 All-America Selections winners for best performing new vegetable varieties for gar-deners. I have included two pepper and two tomato varieties, as I think many people like to grow varieties of these plants from seed, which may not be readily available as transplants.

Included on the list are two yellow pep-pers: Cornito Giallo F1 and Escamillo F1. Cornito Giallo has bright yellow fruit and a sweet and fruity flavor. Fruits are six inches long and two inches wide. Esca-millo is a golden yellow pepper that is early bearing and has a compact habit. Fruits are eight inches long and two-and-a-half inches wide.

Tomato Candyland Red is a beautiful gem-like current-type tomato - meaning the fruits are smaller than cherry tomatoes. The fruit is dark and sweet. Candyland is indeterminate and requires staking.

Chef ’s Choice Green F1 is another to-mato, which makes the AAS 2016 list. The heirloom-looking fruit is green with subtle yellow stripes and a citrus-like flavor. Chef ’s Choice Green is indeterminate and also requires staking.

For white pumpkin lovers like me, Pump-kin Super Moon F1 makes the list. It is a Great Lakes regional winner, which means it should do well in our New York gardens. Super Moon is a large white pumpkin with fruits of up to 50 pounds. The fruit develops early on vigorous vines. The flesh is also good for roasting and eating as you would a winter squash.

To check out more AAS 2016 winners, go to their website: www.all-americaselec-tions.org, which also provides links to seed producers.

Lastly, if you enjoy growing vegetables, you may be interested in taking part in Cornell University’s Vegetable Varieties for Gardeners Citizen Science research. The VVfG website provides an opportunity for gardeners to share their knowledge and experience growing various vegetable vari-eties with a wide community. Participants visit the VVfG site and report on what varieties perform well and not-so-well in their gardens.

Additionally, gardeners can view the va-riety of ratings and reviews that have been submitted to help make choices about what might grow well in their home garden.

By taking part, you will be helping other gardeners with your information as well as researchers. According to Cornell University, VVfG Citizen Science helps researchers gain new insight into vegetable variety performance under a wide range of conditions and practices.

As part of VVfG, Cornell has compiled a “Selected List of Vegetable Varieties for Gardeners in New York State 2016” avail-able online. The report includes varieties, which are well-adapted for home and school gardens in our state. Varieties listed are those which can be rated as part of the VVfG Citizen Science project. The website also provides detailed descriptions and some seed sources for more than 7,000 varieties including those listed in the 2016 report.

Taking part in Cornell University’s Citizen Science vegetable can enhance your gardening experience. You will be contrib-uting valuable research to the horticultural community and participation can be a fun and educational experience for children.

The 2016 report is available online at www.gardening.cornell.edu - click on “For Gardeners” and then “Citizen Science.” For seed sources of listed varieties see: vegvariety.cce.cornell.edu/.

Find the right fit: important summer camp qualities

(BPT) - As this time of year approaches, children start staring at the clock, count-ing down the minutes until the last day of school. But as a par-ent, you’re likely not wishing this time away so quickly, especially if you haven’t finalized any day care or day camp plans.

The sheer number of summer day camp options can leave any parent feeling overwhelmed. And there’s more to consider than just sing-alongs and friendship bracelets. The best camps pro-vide your children with lifelong memories and the skills they need to be successful. With an endless stream of possibilities, how do you navigate and find the best fit for your child?

Here are four things you need to consider before signing your child up for a summer camp:

A history and well-trained staffIt’s important to send your children to a camp run by an organization you trust. There is something to be said about a camp that’s been in operation for several years, and a well-trained staff definitely has something to do with it. The staff should be background checked and certified to take care of children on a daily basis. Before you sign up, ask about safety standards and what the camp’s protocols are for camper-staff interactions.

A mix of activitiesWhether it’s a camp with a theme or a general children’ day camp, children do well when presented with a variety of options when it comes to activities. From arts and

crafts to field trips, sports, swimming and games, find a camp with activities your child will love. Your child will thrive at a camp that offers full days of play, thrilling field trips and healthy activities.

Healthy meals and snacksActive children need to be properly fueled during the day, so make sure whichever camp you choose provides adequate and healthy nutrition and time for breaks. Sugar-filled, processed foods are often the norm and it’s always okay to question the menu. And, don’t forget to ask about how the camp handles food allergies. Make sure whichever camp you choose makes nutri-tion and hydration a priority.

Flexible drop-off and pick-up optionsJust because your children have the sum-mer off doesn’t mean your schedule be-comes more flexible. Look for camps that offer the option to drop them off early so you can still make it to work on time. Similarly, many camps offer later pick up times, often key for working parents.

There’s no need to worry about finding the right children’ camp when you know what to look for. Use this as a checklist and your child will be on their way to a summer full of fun and adventures.

North ChiliBraddock Bay hosts open house on Restoration project

The Braddock Bay Ecosystem Restoration project team will host a media event and open house signifying the completion of phase I of the project, Tuesday, April 26 at 10 a.m., at the Braddock Bay Park located at 199 E. Manitou Road, Rochester.

Speakers for the event include: Town of Greece Super-visor William D. Reilich; NYS DEC Region 8, Regional Director Paul D’Amato; Regional Director for Senator Charles Schumer, Chris Zeltmann; and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District Commander LTC Karl Jansen.

Agenda for the event will be: 10 a.m. - Media Event; 10:45 a.m. – Site walk (media invited); and 12:30 to 7 p.m. – Open House at “the Lodge.”

This project is being conducted through an interagency agreement between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Corps of Engineers in close partnership with the Town of Greece, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and the Rochester Embay-ment Remedial Action Plan Oversight Committee.

The Corps of Engineers awarded a $7.994 million contract, October 6, 2015 to Wesson Group LLC, John-stown, New York for the construction of the Braddock Bay Ecosystem Restoration Project, funded by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. Phase I work was completed March 2016, and consisted of the excavation of channels and potholes within the existing marsh to improve fish and wildlife habitat.

Local watercolor artists on display at Parma LibraryHilton residents and members of the Suburban

Rochester Art Group Lois DeWitt and Anne McCune have combined their talents to bring the new light and gentle hues of springtime to a show at the Parma Public Library Gallery for the remainder of April.

Lois, a long time gardener, has turned her passion for growing flowers into a passion for painting them. Her “Red Zinnas” in their stoneware pot and her golden yellow “Hibiscus at the Lamberton Conservatory” speak to her success.

Anne, too, draws her inspiration from the natural elements surrounding her. She works primarily as

a watercolorist, but recently has experimented with collage, incorporating different rice papers into her compositions. Her jewel toned “Pansy Profusion” and her “Durand Revisited” are fine examples of her col-lage work.

This is the 56th in a series of exhibitions hosted by the Parma Public Library featuring local artists and photographers. For more information or to inquire about personal work, call Rosalind Lipomi, Adult Services Librarian at 392-8350 or visit www.parmapubliclibrary.org

Here comes Peter Cotton TailEaster is always an affair to remember

at Westwood Commons, a DePaul Senior Living Community in North Chili, and this year was no different. From a visit from the Easter Bunny to a donation of baskets from an area family, the holiday was hopping.

As tradition, the Easter Bunny hopped into Westwood Commons during an ice cream social and was greeted with smiles and hugs. This year, Westwood Commons

Resident Care Assistant Janee Muse played the role of the Easter Bunny. Brandi, a pet therapy dog owned by Teresa Jones, also came calling on residents to spread some Easter cheer.

For more information about Westwood Commons, contact Administrator Karen Shaffer at 293-2060 or visit them on Face-book.

Westwood Commons resident Florence VanCott received an Easter basket donated by Lori Fregoe and her sons Leland, Logan and Chesney. Provided photo.

Westwood Commons resident Annette Hellen-berg shares a big smile with the Easter Bunny. Provided photo.

Westwood Commons resident Judy Kinch also welcomes the warm embrace from the happy hopping bunny. Provided photo.

It is important to keep your homeowners insurance policy current by updating and increasing its value as you change, modify, or make additions to your home. The building block of any homeowner's insurance policy is the amount of coverage on the house and its contents. This figure should be based on the replacement value or what it would cost to rebuild the structure. The replacement value often changes over the years.

Insuring for less than the full value is false economy, and refers to valuation no longer available on most policies. Nearly all insurance companies now require homeowner's policies to be insured at 100% of actual replacement cost in order to cover a loss completely. Most companies also offer at least "extended replacement cost" to cover inflationary cost increases for con-struction and the added costs of loss clean up. Choosing an inflation guard clause for your policy that automatically raises your coverage in step with rising prices is another way you can protect yourself. You should evaluate your insurance coverage based on the value of your house and contents at least every two years to make sure that you are adequately covered.

For professional real estate advice, give me a call, Mary Lobene at 352-8529.

Lyme Disease affecting growing number of local dogs

Every day now we have a dog or cat that comes into the clinic with a tick. We know these parasites carry and transmit multiple diseases, including, but not limited to, Lyme disease. Years ago these diseases were limited to the Eastern Coast line and warmer Southern States but more recently people and pets in upstate New York are finding ticks on themselves or their pets and testing posi-tive for Lyme disease. Indicators of Lyme disease in our dogs include swollen painful joints, fevers and eventually kidney disease.

As soon as the snow melts, pet owners should begin pre-ventative measures to protect their pets from ticks (and fleas). There are many great flea and tick control prod-ucts available, and you can discuss with your veterinar-ian which one is best suited for your pet’s specific lifestyle and exposure risk.

Protections from tick bites are the best way to prevent Lyme disease as well as the many other diseases trans-mitted by ticks. There is a vaccine to specifically protect against Lyme disease but remember it does not protect against all tick borne diseases. Most veterinarians recom-mend yearly testing for exposure to Lyme disease with your routine heartworm test and protection applied or given consistently from March to November for ticks.

Talk to your veterinarian for a plan that will work best for your dog and cat. For more information, contact your veterinarian or visit www.dogsandticks.com/
