HSCRegulations

HowdoIbecomeeligibleforanHSC?

The Higher School Certificate (HSC) is the highest educational award you can gain in New SouthWalesschools.AlthoughJamesCookBoysTechnologyHighSchoolcanprepareyoufortheHSC,itistheBoardofStudieswhichgovernstheawardofthecertificate.

Tobeeligible,youneedto:

• be enrolled at a NSW Government school (James Cook Boys Technology High School), a

registeredschool,oraTAFEcollege

• haveasatisfactoryrecordofattendanceand

• haveasatisfactoryrecordofapplicationtoyourstudies

• completeassessmentrequirements

• satisfactorilycompletecourserequirements,includingoral,practicalandprojectwork

• studytherequiredcombinationofcourses,thatis:

o atleast2UnitsofaBoardDevelopedEnglishcourse

o atleast6UnitsthatareBoardDevelopedcourses,and

o atleast3coursesof2unitvalueorgreater

o atleast4subjects

• sitfortheHSCexaminationandmakeagenuineattempt.

FortheawardoftheHigherSchoolCertificateyouneedtoaccumulate:

AccumulationoftheHSC

The five year period commences in the first year you attempt an HSC course examination.Preliminary(Year11)coursesmay,butneednot,beaccumulatedwithinthisperiod.YouwillreceivecumulativeRecordsofAchievementforPreliminaryandHSCcoursesattempted.Bytheendoftheperiod of accumulation, you must have met all HSC pattern-of-study requirements. You mayaccumulateanExtensioncoursebypresentingthe2Unitcomponents inoneyearandtherelatedExtensioninalateryear.

At James Cook Boys Technology High School this option will depend on resources available,organisation constraints and studentdemand. It shouldnotbeexpected that all courses couldbeofferedeveryyear.

CreditTransferandtheHSC

MostHSCcoursescanprovideadvancedstandinginover100TAFEcourses.Thisapplieswhenentrytoacourse isgained -credit transferdoesnotgivepreferencetoenteracourse. InsomecasesaminimumATARinthesubjectisspecified.

AccelerationAcceleratingstudentsmaydecidetoundertakeexternalorpart-timestudyatUniversityorTAFEortake additional units for the HSC. Accelerating students may also choose to study a DistinctionCourse. Distinction Courses are challenging, high-level courses of similar standard to first yearuniversitycourses.

PathwaysIssues

Ability

Students should respect the advice of Head Teachers and Mentors regarding their suitability tohandle demanding subjects. You must examine the content of the course closely and base yoursubjectchoiceonarealisticcareerchoiceandyourneedtogainthemaximummarksyoucan.Thereisnopointstrugglingwith,forexample,Physics,fortwoyearsandscoring20%whenyoumayhavebeencapableofachieving70%inBiologyorSeniorScience.

Statistics

Each year, about 60 000 students are awarded an HSC. Of these, approximately 33% go toUniversity;37%gotoTAFE(somearealsoemployed);12%areemployedorundergoingsomeotherformoftraining;3%repeatschool;15%remainunemployed.

TertiaryCourses

ManycoursesandsubjectsatUniversityhaveeitherpre-requisitesorassumedknowledge.Youmustbe aware of these restrictions when selecting your subjects for the senior school. Some careers,Universities and TAFE Colleges require students to take a combination of courses to gainmatriculation.MoreinformationonthisisgiveninthesectiononUniversityandTAFECareerPaths.

ClassSizesandTimetableConstraints

Coursewill onlybeavailable if sufficientnumbersof students choose them.Somecourseshaveamaximum size. The school endeavours to give students the majority of their preferences, but isrestricted by staffing limits. Certain combinations of courses will not be possible because oftimetablingconstraints.

DurationofCourses

AlltwoyearcourseswithaPreliminaryandHSCcomponentwillconcludethePreliminarysectionofthe course at the beginning of or early in Term 4, Year 11. HSC courses will commence at theconclusionofthePreliminarycourse.

AlloneyearcoursesinYear11willconcludeattheendofTerm4,Year11.

SaturdaySchool

Studentsarenotable to studya languageat theSaturdaySchoolofCommunityLanguages if thatlanguageisbeingtaughtatJamesCookBoysTechnologyHighSchool.

A student may study other community languages for which there is an approved HSC course byenrollingataSaturdaySchoolofCommunity Languages.A studentwishing to study sucha2Unitcoursemusttakeitinadditiontothe12unitsalreadychosenforPreliminarystudy,withtheoptionof then discontinuing any 2 Unit course for HSC study. All information concerning communitylanguagesisavailablefromtheDeputyPrincipal.

MaterialsContributions

Some courses may require a student to purchase materials and/or equipment that are used inlessons.Manycoursesinvolveexcursions.ThesecontributionsareclearlystatedinCourseOutlines.Shouldparentshavedifficultymaking thepayments for subjectmaterials they should contact thePrincipal.

AssessmentPolicyandRules

AtalaterdatestudentswillbegivenanAssessmentBookletwhichoutlinestheAssessmentPolicy,ProceduresandRulesfortheawardofaHigherSchoolCertificate.

TAFEDeliveredHSCCourses-TVETThesecoursesareTAFEsubjectstaughttostudentsinPreliminaryandHSCyears.TheyaretaughtbyTAFEteachersataTAFEcollege.ThecoursecontributestotheHigherSchoolCertificateofthestudent,and if successfully completed, gains the studentaTAFEawardandadvanced standing tootherTAFEcourses.2Unitcoursesareconductedforfourhoursoneafternoonperweek,the1Unitcoursesareconducted for2hoursoneafternoonperweek.TVETcoursesaregenerally conductedonaMondayfrom1.00-5.30pm

ParticipationisonlypracticalandeffectiveifacourseisavailableatalocalTAFEcollege.

Itmust be stressed that entry to TAFE courses is very competitive and students are not guaranteedentryjustbecausetheysubmitanapplicationform.Inmostcases,classsizesaresmall(15studentstooneteacher).Studentsfrommanydifferentschoolscompetefortheplacesthatareavailable.

TAFEcoursesarenotaneasyoption-theyareaschallengingascoursesofferedatschool.AnystudentwhoenrolsinaTAFEcourseneedstobefullyawareofthecommitmenttheyaremaking.AttendanceontheTAFEafternoonisvitalsinceoneafternoonrepresentsawholeweek'swork.TAFEapplystrictattendance rules. Failure to attend results in removal from the course and seriously jeopardises theattainmentofaHigherSchoolCertificate.

ApplicationformsforTAFEcourseswillbeavailable fromtheCareersAdviser inSeptember. Ifyouwould like to include a TAFE course as part of your study program you should see the CareersAdviserassoonaspossibletohaveyournameplacedontheliststhatwillbeestablished.Interviewswill be held prior to recommendation of students into a course. See Ms Blatchford for furtherdetails.

TAFEExclusions

Studentscannotstudythesamemodule intwoormoreTAFEvocationalcourses.StudentscannotstudyaTAFEcourseifthecontentisduplicatedinoneoftheirHSCcourses.Youneedtochecktheexclusions if you are studying: Information Processes and Technology; Information Technology;Retail Operations; Design and Technology; Photography; Sport, Lifestyle and Recreation Studies;VisualArts.

mark.Yourschoolassessmentmarkwillbebasedonyourperformance inassessmenttasksthatyouhaveundertakenduringtheyear.Theother50%willcomefromtheHSCexamination.

ATAR Australian Tertiary Admission Rank. A scaled mark, based on the best 10 BoardDeveloped accepted units of study, which informs students of their relative positioncompared to all other candidates. Reported on a scale of 0-100, it is the basis ofadmission to tertiary courses. To qualify for an ATAR, studentsmust include at leastTWOunitsofEnglish.Atmost,TWOunitsofCategoryBsubjectsmaybeincluded.Ifacandidaterepeatsaunit,onlythelastattemptwillbeincludedintheATAR.

BoardofStudies The body inNSW responsible for developing Preliminary andHSC courses, organisingthe HSC examinations, recording assessment, issuing Higher School Certificates andRecords of Achievement and setting the rules and requirements for the SchoolCertificateandtheHigherSchoolCertificate.

Course AcoursewhosesyllabushasbeenprovidedbytheBoardofStudies.Itisessentiallythesame in all schools in the State and is assessed by public examination and by amoderated school assessment at the end of Year 12. Examples are: English Standard,MathematicsExtension,Biology,BusinessStudies.

BoardEndorsed (i) A course with its syllabus designed by the school to cater for Course: the specialneedsand interestsof itsstudents.KnownasaSchoolEndorsedCourse, it isassessedinternally by the school.When completed in Year 12 it appears on theHigher SchoolCertificate.

(ii)AContentEndorsedCourse(CEC)withasyllabusprovidedbytheBoardofStudiestocater for areas of special interest not covered in Board Developed Courses, and toensureuniformity.

(iii)AVET(VocationalEducationalandTraining)coursedeliveredbyTAFE(CEC)

BoardEndorsedcoursescounttowardstheHSC,butarenotexaminedexternally.

CreditTransfer Allows students who have achieved a required standard in one course to apply foradvancedstandinginarelatedcourseofferedbyadifferentinstitution.BOS®TAFEandTAFE ® Universities. Advanced standing provides students with exemptions fromcertainsubjects.

DualAccreditation RecognitionbytheBoardofStudies(fortheHSC)andtheVocationalEducationTrainingAccreditationBoard-VETAB(forindustrypurposes).

Pathways There are various pathway provisions for students to accumulate their Higher SchoolCertificate. The pathways provision allows flexibility in obtaining the Higher SchoolCertificateandprovidesequitableaccess for thosepeoplewhowish to combine theirstudywithotherresponsibilities.

PerformanceBands Performancebandsare levelsofachievement ina course.Eachbandhasa statementthat describes observable andmeasurable features of students’ knowledge, skills andunderstanding in a course. Band 1 indicates that performance is below minimumstandardandBand6representsthehighestlevelofperformance.

PreliminaryCourse Thefirstpartofacourse,usuallycompletedinYear11.ItisassessedattheschoollevelandisassumedknowledgefortheHSCpartofthecoursewhichfollows.

Subject/Course Asubjectisthegeneralnamegiventotheareaofstudy.Acourseisaparticularpartorprogram, for example: English is the subject which has courses 2U Standard, 2UAdvanced,2uFundamentalsandExtensions1and2.
