Free groups

The free group Fn of rank n is the group with n generators and nonon-trivial relations.

In other words, Fn is the set of reduced words consisting of{a1, a−11 , . . . , an, a

−1n }.

The goal of this talk is to understand the subgroups of Fn,including a proof of the following theorem:

Theorem (Nielsen–Schreier)

Every subgroup of a free group is free.

Graphs

A (directed) graph Γ is a pair (V, E), where V is a set of verticesand E is a set of edges which are ordered pairs of vertices.

An edge path is a list of edges e1, . . . , ek where the terminal vertexof ei is the initial vertex of ei+1 for i = 1, . . . , k − 1.

A loop based at v ∈ V is an edge path e1, . . . , ek where v is theinitial vertex of e1 and the terminal vertex of ek.

Fundamental groups

Let X be a topological space.

A loop based at x0 ∈ X is a continuous map γ : [0, 1]→ X withγ(0) = γ(1) = x0.

Two loops γ1, γ2 based at x0 are homotopy-equivalent if thereexists a continuous interpolation between them; in other words, acontinuous map h : [0, 1]× [0, 1]→ X with h(0, ·) = h(1, ·) = x0and h( · , 0) = γ1 and h( · , 1) = γ2.

Homotopy-equivalence is an equivalence relation.

The set of homotopy-equivalence classes of loops based at x0 ∈ Xforms a group under ‘concatenation’, called the fundamental groupand denoted π(X; x0).

Fundamental group of a graph

Given a graph Γ, define the reduction of a loop e1, . . . , ek byrepeatedly removing adjacent pairs of inverse edges.

Define two loops based at v ∈ V to be equivalent if theirreductions are the same.

The fundamental group π(Γ; v) of the graph Γ is the set ofequivalence classes of loops, under ‘concatenation’.

The main theorem

Theorem

Every finitely-generated subgroup of a free group is free.

We will illustrate the proof with the subgroup H ⊂ F2 generatedby {aba, a2b2, ba2b−1, b3}.

Setup of the proof

Every loop in ΓH naturally corresponds to an element of H, butnot necessarily bijectively.

Setup of the proof

A graph map Γ1 → Γ2 maps the vertices and edges of Γ1 to thevertices and edges of Γ2, preserving adjacency.

A map Γ1 → Γ2 induces a homomorphism π(Γ1; v) → π(Γ2; w).

r : ΓH → R is a graph map.

The image of the induced homomorphism ρ : π(ΓH ; v) → π(R; w)is H.

Can we modify ΓH to make ρ injective?

Graph folding

Given a graph Γ, we can fold any two distinct edges with the sameinitial vertex, as follows:

Source: Figure 4.5 (page 72)

The induced homomorphism π(Γ; v) → π(Γf ; v) is bijective for atype I fold, and surjective but not injective for a type II fold.

Factoring graph maps

Suppose r : Γ1 → Γ2 is a graph map, which maps two distinct edgesei, ej with the same initial vertex in Γ1 to the same edge in Γ2.

Let f : Γ1 → Γf denote folding (i.e., identifying) ei and ej .

Then r factors through Γf ; there exists a unique r′ : Γf → Γ2 suchthat r = (r′ ◦ f).

Page 14: Subgroup of a free group is free: a topological proofums/Subgroup Free Group 27... · 2020. 6. 29. · Anton Wu Geometric group theory seminar Summer UMS 5/21. Fundamental group of

Immersions

Now suppose r : Γ1 → Γ2 is an immersion, which means no twodistinct edges with the same initial vertex in Γ1 are mapped to thesame edge in Γ2.

Then if e1, . . . , ek is a reduced edge path in Γ1, then e−1i and ei+1

are distinct edges that share an initial vertex, so they map todistinct edges in Γ2.

Reduced edge paths in Γ1 are mapped to reduced edge paths in Γ2.

Hence non-trivial loops in Γ1 are mapped to non-trivial loops in Γ2,so the induced homomorphism ρ : π(Γ1; v) → π(Γ2; w) is injective.

Putting it together...

Lemma

For any graph map r : Γ1 → Γ2, we can write r = r′ ◦ (fm ◦ · · · ◦ f1),where each fi is a fold, and r′ is an immersion.

Proof : Repeatedly factor r through folding; if r′ is not factorablethrough folding, then r′ is an immersion.

Proof of the main theorem

Theorem

Every finitely-generated subgroup of a free group is free.

Proof : Apply the lemma to the graph map r : ΓH → R. There must bea graph Γ′ = (fm ◦ · · · ◦ f1) ΓH such that r′ : Γ′ → R is an immersion.Let ρ, ρ′, ϕ be the induced homomorphisms of r, r′, (fm ◦ · · · ◦ f1).The image of ρ = (ρ′ ◦ ϕ) is H, and ϕ is surjective, so the image of ρ′

is H. Meanwhile, since r′ is an immersion, ρ′ is injective.Hence ρ′ gives an isomorphism from π(Γ′ ; v) to H, so H is free.

New generators, membership problem

From the graph Γ′, we see that H is generated by {b, a2, aba}with no non-trivial relations.

We can write these in terms of the original generators{aba, a2b2, ba2b−1, b3}.

b = (ba2b−1)(b3)(a2b2)−1

a2 = (a2b2)(b3)−1(ba2b−1)(b3)(a2b2)−1

aba = aba

We can also easily determine if a given element of F2 is in H.

aba−1b−1 ∈ H, ab 6∈ H

Finite-index subgroups

Theorem

A subgroup H ⊆ Fn has finite index iff for each vertex v in Γ′, there aren edges with initial vertex v and n edges with terminal vertex v.In this case, the index of H in Fn is the number of vertices of Γ′.

The cosets Hi correspond to {reduced edge paths in Γ′ from v1 to vi},where v1 = w is the central vertex of Γ′.

Normal subgroups

Define Γ′ to be vertex-transitive if for any vertex vi, there is anautomorphism of Γ′ which maps v1 to vi, and aj-edges to aj-edges.

Theorem

A subgroup H ⊆ Fn is normal iff Γ′ is vertex-transitive.

Corollary

If H ⊆ Fn is finitely-generated and normal, then H has finite indexin Fn.
