The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. was originally formed over 30 years ago by an enthusiastic group of Subaru owners. Today the club has expanded to include all Subaru 4WD and AWD vehicles, as well as all other makes of AWD, light 4WD and crossover/soft-roader type vehicles. The club aims to participate in exploration of the Australian countryside without damage to the environment, vehicle or individual. Visitors are most welcome to attend the club’s General Meetings and contact committee members regarding participation in club activities.

The club relies on membership fees to offset its running costs, including insurance. Membership fees are payable each year, due on 31 May. Fees for the 2012/13 year were agreed at the general meeting in March 2012 and are as follows:

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Welcome to the September club magazine and my president’s report, from Northern Ireland. As I mentioned last month, Angela and I are visiting her birthplace and taking the opportunity to see Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and a bit of England and Singapore. This report may seem more of a travelogue than a club report but that is to be expected given that we have been away for a couple of weeks now. I am sure that the club is in good hands, while I am away. Some may say that it is in better shape due to my absence, but I don’t quite entertain that. When Angela and I left Australia we were on the same flight as Jessica who was heading to the Monaco F1 Grand Prix. While Jessica was able to pre-select her seat, I was unable to do this given that we were flying on frequent flyer points. As a result, Angela and I were seated on either side of an aisle, in the back of economy. Fortunately the crew moved us up to a spare block of four seats, not too far from where Jessica was seated so Angela and Jessica spent the flight chatting while I watched a couple of movies. Our visit to the Emerald Isle has certainly been an experience due to the very different road condition, coupled with driving a front wheel drive, diesel Peugeot 207 SW (Martin will be pleased). Touring here by car has been quite different to anything I have previously experienced in Australia, or anywhere else overseas for that matter. The Peugeot 207 is extremely sporty and, despite being a diesel, runs out easily to 100kph in third gear. Driving it around the back roads was more like driving a rally car than anything I have driven before, including the turbo Forester. On one particular road Angela had to remind me that I wasn’t in a Subaru and that I was actually in a rental vehicle driving on public roads in a different country . While I am considering a diesel Forester for my next vehicle, when the CVT version comes out, I may have now been spoilt by the experience of driving the Peugeot. I may need to reset my expectations as it was definitely more like driving a very fast revving, turbo, petrol powered car, albeit without the turbo lag. I was amazed at how high performing the Peugeot was and how much of a pleasure it was to drive. The only difficulty I had was remembering which side the wipers and indicators were on, being the opposite of the way they are in Australia. I can just see myself falling into the trap of doing the opposite of what I intended when we get back home in a week or so.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

On the way up the Irish west coast we stopped at Galway for the night and were treated to a parade of super cars, being the participants in the annual Cannonball Run, a charity event that runs for three days throughout both the Republic and Northern Ireland. It was fun seeing a mix of limousines, Hummers, Ferraris and other very expensive, or rare, machines arriving in convoy at the city center. The city was much busier than it would normally be on a cool, autumn Saturday night, as a result of the convoy’s visit, making our visit to this city more interesting than it might otherwise have been. The road system here is quite interesting, varying greatly from 120kph motorways to paved, single lane goat tracks, barely wide enough to drive a small car down. During one section of our trip we decided to follow some locals, including a few vans, down a side road to bypass what we found out later to be a serious accident on the main road. Watching the convoy ahead of us belting down this narrow, hedge-lined road was something to behold and gave us the confidence to drive a lot faster than we may have done otherwise. This put us in good stead for later in the trip when we ended up on some similar roads, at times quite unintentionally. One these forays took us along a very narrow road, with many blind corners, to visit the ancestral home of John F. Kennedy. The other times were generally to get us back onto the right track after missing one of southern Ireland’s obscure road signs. Despite the interesting roads, and the wintery conditions encountered here, there are very few Subaru's on the road, apart from quite a number of WRXs. I did see a couple of Subaru dealers and one had a current model Forester out the front, with a price tag of around 37,000 Euro. Maybe they are just too expensive when compared with the various local brands that are much cheaper due to them being manufactured in England. From a weather perspective, I have found another place that is very like Melbourne. Here in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, I have watched the weather go from brilliant sunshine to grey and gloomy, including showers, all in the matter of a few minutes. The locals even describe it as having four seasons in a day and they were intrigued that Melbourne was described in the same way. It looks like we do not have that to ourselves as it turns out. Last time I wrote about hand position on the steering wheel, but what about steering itself I hear you ask. The method of steering that maintains the most control over the vehicle (and therefore the safest) is called pull-push. Your left hand stays on the left side of the wheel and your right hand on the other side. As you turn left, your left hand 'pulls' the steering wheel down and your right hand slides down to meet it. Your right hand takes the grip and 'pushes' the wheel back up to continue the turn. Hand over hand steering, where each hand moves to the top to grip the wheel is not as effective, and places your forearms over the centre of the wheel where the airbag is - not a good place to be if it goes off. Palming the wheel, where you use the palm of one hand to turn the wheel can be dangerous. You are relying only on friction, not grip, to turn the wheel. Happy Travels Jessica Walsh

This trip will have a variety of levels of difficulty, depending on the choices you make, making it suitable for all members. Michael is thinking of organising dinner at the local pub before heading off on the trip. Let him know if you're interested and he'll organise it. We'll meet at Kerry and my home, Kooinda, for the pre-navigation briefing. Start/Finish point will be the Leongatha Football Ground.

We have limited accommodation at Kooinda for 5 (one room with a double bed, one room with 2 single beds and a single bed room), on a first come, first serve basis. Accommodation is also available at the motels or at the caravan park, either camp/caravan sites or cabins. Michael can supply phone numbers.

Michael can also organise a bacon, egg and pancake breakfast for the Sunday. Again, let him know if you're interested.

A weekend based in Maldon in central Victoria, with local trips on the Saturday to heritage mining sites in the surrounding countryside, and a navigation run. On Sunday there is an option to visit the annual Mt Tarrengower Hill Climb (a heritage vehicle and motorcycle event run by Bendigo Car Club – $5 charge for spectators, or $10 for a family). Tent and camper accommodation available at Dot and Martin’s property on the edge of town, or at the local caravan park. BBQ or pub options on Saturday night depending on weather.

The Grampians are an outstanding geological feature in western Victoria. This trip will aim to traverse the ranges so is rated at medium as some tracks can be a bit scrabbly. Discussions are being had with Parks Victoria so there may be access to some MVO tracks as well.

Cairns is the only place in the world to view the total solar eclipse on November 14 2012 from land. Allow about a week before and a week after the eclipse for travel and some touring in the area. If you would like more information on the eclipse itself, go to www.eclipse2012.org.au

The eclipse is due at about 6.45am (yes, am) and will be in an area that is subject to frequent cloud cover at that time of year, so there may in fact be nothing to 'see' - apart from the darkness, that is. Because of this, the trip is still in the concept stage, and may not go ahead. Please let me know if you are interested.

I have just purchased this 7 inch GPS unit. It’s the same size as my Satnav in my MY10 Forester. It is certainly a sight having one mounted on top of the other. Maps galore, I need to make sure I keep one eye on the road. Apart from the standard street navigation software it comes with VMS’s off road maps and can be loaded with OziExplorer which gives you access to 100K topographic maps. The track logs from OziExplorer can be easily saved and viewed on your PC, giving you a permanent record of where you have been. I must admit the OziExplorer software has so many options it is going to take me a while to get to know it all. This picture is from my first day trip to try out the unit. 7.2 Trip and Social See elsewhere in the magazine for details. Night trip – have 5 participants. Leisurefest – as the club is not having a stand, the club has offered to

help man the 4WD Victoria stand. Anyone interested in assisting needs to contact Damian.

Goldfields Date has been brought forward a week. Have seven vehicles attending. Need to roll up Saturday morning. The navigation run will

take 2 to 2½ hours in the afternoon. Evening meal will be at a local pub.

Grampians Have 6 vehicles / 10 people so far. Peter is doing a pre-trip this weekend.

A large number of members are now printing their own magazine and forgoing a hard copy.

Cost of printing for the August magazine was $48. Suggestion was made that a little teaser be put in the distribution

email as to what is happening at the next meeting or some up-coming trip highlight.
