The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. was originally formed over 30 years ago by an enthusiastic group of Subaru owners. Today the club has expanded to include all Subaru 4WD and AWD vehicles, as well as all other makes of AWD, light 4WD and crossover/soft-roader type vehicles. The club aims to participate in exploration of the Australian countryside without damage to the environment, vehicle or individual. Visitors are most welcome to attend the club’s General Meetings and contact committee members regarding participation in club activities.
The club relies on membership fees to offset its running costs, including insurance. Membership fees are payable each year, due on 31 May. Fees for the 2012/13 year were agreed at the general meeting in March 2012 and are as follows:

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Welcome to the February club magazine and my report. It seems to be such a short time since my last report, which I suppose happens in the short month of February. Well it certainly has flown by and it is a bit of a struggle to work out what has happened in the club of late.
For those of you who missed the January meeting, you really missed a fun filled evening. The fun started earlier than usual with a sausage sizzle BBQ kicking off at 6.30PM. The response to the BBQ was so good that I had to rush off, mid-BBQ, to get more bread. Fortunately, that was all we ran short of and, due to the hard work of our cooks, Jessica and Stephen, there were a lot of well-fed members and visitors ready when the meeting proper started. There was also a healthy contribution to the club’s funds which is always very welcome.
The meeting itself was also quite special, with one of the most entertaining, and profitable, fines and fun we have had in recent times. Apart from the odd missing badge, most of the fines resulted from the club’s eventful Christmas trip. The story was well told by a number of the attendees and was a perfect introduction to a thirty minute compilation video of the trip, put together by Stephen. It was great seeing so many members not only at the meeting but also staying on after supper to watch the video presentation. As a result of the extended fines and fun session, together with the trip video, we ran out of time to run the club’s photo competition. The competition will now be run at the February meeting.
I hope that we can repeat the pre-meeting BBQ again before the colder weather returns. We may also consider a pub counter meal before the March meeting, given the close proximity of the pub to Glen Waverley Subaru where our meeting will be held that month.
This week I experienced a couple of meetings of very different dimensions. On Monday I attended the association’s board meeting which, even after a 6.30PM start, still did not finish until around midnight, due to the amount of business to be transacted. On Tuesday I attended the general meeting of the Toyota Landcruiser Club, at the invitation of Peter Dwyer, their club president, held at the Mulgrave Country Club. Many of you will know Peter from his company, Telstat, while some will remember Peter from his involvement in the Four Wheel Drive radio show.
While the meeting proper finished before 10pm, it was still around midnight before I left the meeting venue. After some interesting discussions with their club webmaster, training officer and Cruiserkhana coordinator, I enjoyed a late coffee with Peter, Carol and Russell, which meant that it was another very late night by the time I got home. Any discussion with Peter is most entertaining due to his very long involvement with 4WDing and he was in fine form, despite having just run the club meeting.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
An interesting thing about the TLC meeting is the number of members who regularly attend, with over two hundred in attendance at this month’s meeting. Next month, when they will have Ron and Viv Moon as guest speakers, they are expecting well over three hundred. The numbers attending are so large that they now need to pre-book dinner reservations in the club’s bistro.
Even though the club has around thirty members in their committee, with each presenting on their portfolio during the meeting, the proceedings moved along very well, mostly thanks to Peter’s organising skills. I learnt a number of things about TLC at the meeting including the fact that their Yaark property has been valued at around $1M. Not bad for a club that has been around only a couple of years longer that ours. The property is so large that it has a maintenance budget of its own, something that we should consider for the Buchan site.
Speaking of Buchan, don’t forget that we are planning a trip there for the March long weekend, so please let David Wilson know if you want to come along. We hope to start closing in the shelter, in order to keep the stock out, so come along to help, or supervise, the development.
Last month I mentioned the new Forester and was looking forward to a new automatic CVT to match up with the diesel. Unfortunately, this is not going to happening in the near future, if at all. This is a questionable decision on the part of Subaru corporate but, given the size of our market, I suppose we can’t blame them. Having said that, a number of the Forester’s competitors have released their diesel models with an automatic option so it will be difficult to see the Forester maintaining its market share. This could be good discussion for our March meeting at Subaru.
The next association general meeting will be held at Warragul on February 23rd. This should be an interesting meeting as the guest presenters will be from the CFA Community Liaison Bushfire group. This is very topical given the amount of the state currently under threat of bushfires. I am sure that you will enjoy the meeting, if you have time to make the trip.
If any of you are interested in making a weekend of it, you are welcome to make the longer trip down to our farm at Woodside North, where Angela and I will be, to stay for the weekend. We could head out to the local pub at Woodside for a counter meal on Saturday night. Please let me know if you can make it to the meeting and if you would like to stay at the farm as well.

SUBARU GLEN WAVERLEY – MARCH MEETING (Tuesday 26 March) The launch of the new Forester is here. And, there is no doubt all of us want an up-close and personal moment with it. The club is in the midst of speaking with Subaru Glen Waverley to have our March General Meeting at their showroom! It’s tentative at this stage and we will let you know when we have more information, but a basic rundown of the night may look something like this: From 5:30pm – Dinner at the Village Green Hotel (for those who can make it) From 7:00pm – Subaru Glen Waverley (look at vehicles, take test-drives, attend tours) 8:00pm – Start of General Meeting in boardroom or theatre room Confirmation and details to come!

No-one can quite remember the last time the Club visited this area, which is located approximately 200 Km west of Melbourne near the town of Avoca.
The Pyrenees Ranges offer visitors a wonderful mix of natural and cultural history, with spectacular views, rugged mountain ranges, abundant wildlife, a rich mix of wildflowers and historic sites. The main attractions of the forest are the Waterfalls Picnic Area, Governor Rock Lookout and the Pyrenees Endurance Walk. Other nearby attractions include the Percydale Historic Area, the Landsborough Flora and Fauna Reserve and the numerous wineries located around the Ranges.
Located one hour drive west of Ballarat, just off the Western Highway, Mt Cole State Forest is 25 kilometres from the township of Beaufort and marks the gateway to the Pyrenees Wine District and the Grampians.
The club is investigating accommodation options, in the meantime, there will be a trip intention sheet at the February GM, so please put your name down if you’re interested so Stephen can get a sense for numbers.

TASMANIA TREKKIN’ (Part 1) February 16 - March 1 2013

Michael, Stephen and Jessica met near the Spirit of Tasmania for a quick photo shoot and a drink. Stephen’s parents came along so there were five of us to bid three ‘Bon Voyage’.
We boarded the ship, found our cabins and headed for dinner. The crossing was calm and uneventful and after a good night’s sleep (for most) we were awake at 5am and preparing to disembark.
After driving off and collecting our gas cylinders we headed for Burnie. By
the time we got there the shops were open for a last minute veggie purchase and breakfast with coffee. Stephen would beg to differ at the reference to breakfast. Our next stop was Smithton for our last fuel stop and then on to Woolnorth, the northern most part of Tassie we could reach. We were soon to appreciate what the ‘Roaring Forties’ meant.
We were southbound towards Arthur River campground with a slight detour to West Point, so named because it is the westernmost point in Tassie we could get to. At Arthur River we found a font of information from Tia at the ranger station and we soon had camp set up. Did I mention it was windy?!
After a sleep in we looked forward to a big day behind the wheel. We headed south to see how far we could get and soon found the track to be quite challenging. There was sand, rocks, mud and more rocks, and more sand. Pressures were dropped, and then dropped again. After a particularly difficult section we decided enough was enough, so we turned around and made our way back towards camp.
As we still had plenty of time we chose to do some of the tracks that followed the coastline. It was on the Couta Rocks to Sarah Anne Rocks track that Jessica suffered a flat tyre. The puncture was in the sidewall, and co-incidentally the same wheel as the high country trip. It was quickly changed

and we were on our way again.
We headed back to camp to find a large assortment of motorhomes had also chosen to share our location. Michael found one of his tyres had a slow leak, which would need to be monitored.
Day three and we were heading for Corinna Campground on the Pieman River. We stopped at the end of Balfour track, to see what we would have faced had we taken that route. It looked very challenging. We then headed into Balfour, the site of an old mining town with lots of tracks to explore. It was here we found Michael’s tyre had dropped pressure again, so we changed it.
We continued on our way and observed some dramatic vegetation changes as we headed further south and climbed the hills and dropped into the
valleys. We made good time and were soon in Corinna, where we enjoyed lunch. Unfortunately the campground was booked out for the night so we crossed the river on the ferry (at $20 per vehicle) and headed to Strahan, via Zeehan.
In Zeehan we fueled up at an attendant-less petrol station, and aired our tyres back up. After a few
more vegetation changes and kilometres of windy road we arrived in Strahan where we set up camp not far from Macquarie Heads, the entrance to the second largest harbour in the Southern Hemisphere. Little were we to realise that tragedy would soon strike...
This tale of Tassie will be continued in more detail upon our return.

2013 SUBARU FORESTER NOW ON SALE IN AUSTRALIA by Malcom Flynn, The Motor Report, www.themotorreport.com.au
Subaru's new 2013 Forester is now on sale in Australia, introducing buyers to the fourth generation model in its popular midsized SUV range. The new 'Fozza' brings expanded drivetrain options, improved interior space, a host of new features, and improved efficiency across the board.
Style-wise, the new Forester is a continuation of the design language introduced with the current Liberty and Impreza/XV models - and arguably the most visually appealing to date.
Overall length and height is now 35mm greater than the model it replaces, but the 2013 Forester uses high strength steel and an aluminium bonnet to keep weight-gain to a minimal five kilograms. Despite its taller stance, the new Forester’s aerodynamics have been improved from the previous 0.37cd, to a more hatch-like 0.33.
Like the 2012 XV/Impreza ranges, petrol Foresters adopt the i, i-L, and i-S trim level designations, while turbodiesel models are available in equivalent D, D-L, and D-S levels.
Mechanical Package (non-XT models)
For 2013, the previous Forester’s 126kW/235Nm 2.5 litre petrol and 108kW/350Nm 2.0 litre turbodiesel boxer engines continue largely unchanged, aside from the diesel’s maximum torque arriving 200rpm earlier at 1600rpm.
Diesel models continue as six-speed manual only, but are now spread across three trim levels; D, D-L, and D-S. These continue to lead the way in terms of fuel efficiency, with an official 5.9l/100km (down from 6.0l/100km).
The 2.5 litre petrol boxer is now auto-only, but the big news is that the previous model’s four speed torque converter unit (five-speed on S-Edition) has been replaced by Subaru’s Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT transmission with paddle shifters. This transmission has helped the 2.5’s efficiency improve

significantly, from 9.3l/100km to 8.1l/100km, and this driveline is available in i, i-L, and i-S trim levels.
At the lower end of the Forester’s price scale, a 2.0 litre base petrol option returns to the range for the first time since 2003, producing 110kW/198Nm, and returning an impressive 7.2l/100km. The 2.0 litre base petrol is available with six-speed manual only, and available in i and i-L trim grades.
All non-turbo petrol models are now equipped with an automatic stop/start function, which switches off the engine when stationary for more than half a second, and will restart within 0.35 seconds when needed.
Subaru’s SI-Drive system is fitted to 2.0i-L, 2.5i-L, and 2.5i-S models, giving drivers the choice between ‘Sport’ linear throttle response or ‘Intelligent’ economy-biased throttle.
The 2013 Forester continues to offer two versions of Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drivetrain, with manual models utilising a viscous centre coupling, and autos a active torque-split arrangement. The previous low-range transfer case available on non-turbo petrol manual Foresters is now absent from the Forester lineup, but off-road enthusiasts will be sated by the introduction of the new X-Mode off-road mode.
X-Mode is controlled by a console-mounted switch, and adjusts the traction/stability control and ABS settings to suit low-traction surfaces. The function also brings hill-descent control to the Forester range for the first time, and permits descent speed control intuitively through the accelerator and brake pedals.
Features
The 2013 Forester’s all-new cabin features a similar design to its Liberty and Impreza contemporaries, with soft touch points complementing an altogether family-proof feel. All trim levels feature a 4.3 inch multifunction dash display for the first time, demonstrating information such as fuel economy, eco evaluation, outside temperature, and self-maintenance advice.
Bluetooth telephony and audio also appears across the range, along with USB and 3.5mm connectivity. The rear bench offers a reclining function for all models, along with a one-touch electronic folding mechanism.
Slightly larger dimensions in most areas permit a 23mm rear legroom gain, 32mm higher driving position, and 36mm higher rear seat location.
Combined with forward mounted A-pillars and door mounted wing mirrors, outward visibility is improved for all occupants. Child seat anchorage points

are now located on the rear seatbacks, eliminating the compromise to rearward vision of the current model roof points.
Seats-up cargo capacity for the 2013 Forester is actually 38 litres less than previously (now 422 litres), due to Subaru Australia’s insistence on a full-size spare wheel on all local models. Previous Foresters have also come equipped with full-sized wheels, but the new model has been designed around a space saver wheel for markets who prefer outright cargo capacity.
Safety features include a knee airbag (for a total of seven) across all models - improving what was already a 5-Star ANCAP model - along with traction and stability control, reversing camera, and hill-start assist. Subaru’s EyeSight collision avoidance system also makes its first Forester appearance on the 2.5i-S model (optional in 2.5i-L).
Also new to Forester is an automated tailgate on 2.5i-S and 2.0D-S models, with a memory height setting for those with low-ceiling car spaces.
Key visual differentiation between the trim grades is via wheel designs, with the entry i models equipped with 17 inch steel wheels, D, D-L,and 2.5i-L models gain 17 inch alloys, while S models feature 18-inch star pattern alloys. Beyond the entry i/D models’ impressive levels of standard kit, the mid-spec L models gain front fog lights, leather steering wheel and gear selector.
On top of these features, S models gain an electronic sunroof, automatic xenon headlights, automatic wipers, keyless entry and push-button start, leather seats, electric driver seat adjustment, heated driver and front passenger seat, and satnav with additional 6.1 inch screen.

• 4WD Victoria is keen to get involved in the bushfire relief in Gippsland, and support is being sought from member clubs.
• Many thanks to members for turning out for tonight’s barbecue, and for Stephen’s and Jessica’s cooking efforts.
8. General Business
8.1. Buchan campsite
• Some work is required to recover from the floods last year. Fencing was damaged, which resulted in stock damage to trees, and the barbecue.
• Track into the campsite has been widened by DSE.
8.2. MSB oil additive – Rob will offer a discount to club members.
8.3. Computer UPS – Damian has been able to adapt one into a battery inverter to convert 12v DC into 240v AC. It has a bit more oomph than a standard inverter.
8.4. Sharing of club photographs / videos – looking at options to be able to share such amongst members and with the public. If anyone has any ideas as to how to best do this, please speak to Dale, Damian or Stephen.
8.5. Martin is investigating a number of options to improve his car’s performance. Such options include oiled air filters and direct cold air.
8.6. Air filters – important to always check / replace air filters after a dusty trip. With oiled air filters, it is very important that they are cleaned properly. Otherwise, they will clog up and cause increased fuel consumption.
8.7. Supercheap Auto – offering Willow jerry cans on discount.

Minutes of the meeting of the committee of the Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc held on 5th February 2013 at the home of Peter Bellis starting at 7:42pm.
1. Present: Peter Bellis, Damian Stock, Jessica Simpson, Dale Rebgetz, Bob Marshall, Andrew Jantke, Stephen Whittaker, Bev Davison, Martin Foot.

3. Quorum: A quorum was achieved with 9 committee members present.
4. Minutes of the Previous Meeting
4.1. Minutes of the December 2012 minutes were accepted after being moved by Dale and seconded by Steve.
4.2. Business Arising from the Minutes and Outstanding Actions
4.2.1. Club Constitution Changes – yet to be lodged with Consumer Affairs Victoria.
4.2.2. Pre-2003 Club Website – Martin will continue to follow up with Mark Tyssen.
4.2.3. Club brochure – needs to be updated.
4.2.4. Bursons, Nunawading – general 20% discount has been set up. Need to contact Damian or Dale for details.

• The Australia Day weekend trip to South Gippsland was cancelled due to lack of interest.
• In the past, various trip leaders have prepared a one page trip summary for participants as to what to expect on the trip, gear required, etc.
• Buchan – Labour Day weekend – David/Damian will be the trip leader.
• Have a dearth of trips between late April and mid July.
• Simpson Desert – the current storms in Queensland and northern NSW could result in flood waters in the area in about July. Need to have some alternate trips planned just in case the Simpson Desert is not feasible.
• Les Scott – offered to run a one-day training session on tyre changing/repair (he used to work in the trade).
• Bushfire relief – potential trip in the near future.
• Various day trip / weekend trip options were tabled.

• Last month’s general meeting was a great success with the barbecue at the start, and the video of the Christmas trip at the end. Had 29 members plus one visitor at the meeting

• Blaze-Aid – FWD Victoria will be co-ordinate their fire relief activities in Gippsland with Blaze-Aid.
• FWD Victoria – would like to know what community activities the 4WD clubs are involved with. The club will probably be involved in a relief activity in about 3 weeks.
• Buchan campsite – need to do some remedial work on the shelter.
7. General Business
• Forum / e-trip – how feasible is it, how much is the cost? Stephen will do some research on the topic. Damian will contact the Pajero 4WD Club about their system and pass the details onto Stephen.

'Pump up the volume'
How often do you consider your tyre pressures? We need to consider them not just for when we are driving on sand. Car manufacturers will generally specify a slightly lower pressure than the tyre manufacturers, as a higher pressure is a firmer ride which some may find uncomfortable and blame the car or suspension manufacturer. However if you run slightly higher pressures your car will handle better as there will be less roll on the tyres. The trade off is of course the firmer ride.
If you lower the pressure then you will have a softer ride. This is especially true when you are driving on poorly made or maintained roads. The tyre will tend to mould around the bumps as opposed to bouncing over them. The trade off in this case is that we may need to reduce the speed as our handling can be adversely affected.
What is the right tyre pressure for on road use? It depends if you want better handling or a more comfortable daily drive. We usually find somewhere in the middle as a compromise. Next time you check your pressures, try a little more or a little less and feel the difference.
