DESCRIPTION

SU Project

TRANSCRIPT

It is proposed that the Students Union will have a new interior refurbishment ready for October 2013. In

order to improve the student experience at Southampton Solent University the Students Union is to be

upgraded, updated and improved to provide a greater range of student-centred facilities. The objective is

to increase SSU income so as to be able to provide a greater range of services to students.

An appropriate and well planned interior for all areas within the building is required and to be

implemented into the new refurbishment schedule. A scheme for the new reception, entrance area is also

required.

Consideration can be given to extending the building if a good case can be made for the need for this.

Similarly the top floor, currently occupied by one of the academic departments of the University, could be

brought back into SSU use if this can be justified.

It will be expected that a business identity will be created by each individual in the form of a name and

logo which will be incorporated into individual drawings. As it would be in industry, you will be pitching

against each other to produce the most appealing idea to present to the client who will decide which one

to take forward.

Floor Plan Requirements

Bar – minimum 250 occupancy

Catering Outlet – to provide good value food

Reception Area – Adjacent to the entrance, not a typical reception area but a space to introduce people to the space

Shop – to sell food and equipment

Office Space for – President, General manager, finance and trading teams (4 people/3 desks), Vice President, Activities administrator, VP communications, Media sales (1 person), Design and promotions (1 person) and Bar manager.

Private Advice Centre – Student advisor and VP Student support.

Stores/ Toilets/ Sized for occupancy/ Bar cellar/ Essential plant space

Move all the office space to the third floor, so this is more out of the way as not all student visitors will be requiring the use of this space only those purposely visiting certain people.

Open up the entrance area, making better use of the space and to make the SU more inviting.

Create a ‘Games room’ including space for pool tables, comfy seating, other games, wide screen TV’s, close to the main SU bar as an extension to this but separate from the eating space.

The main SU bar to include comfy seating areas for groups of people drinking, and dining area, as main meals and snacks will be served from here.

Have a small ‘coffee bar’ located on the third floor where office space will be, as you first walk into the floor upstairs. This will be well sign posted from downstairs.

The SU shop will remain on the second floor, this will be made larger than the current design, with a ‘non optional’ walk through design to get to the back of the second floor, in order to pick up a bigger passing trade, and improve the amount of customers during the day.

Toilet facilities located on each floor, including cleaning stores.

The current design is rather dull and not to be described as ‘exciting’ this needs to change for the redesign in order to make it an inviting space students will want to spend time in.

One thing I feel the current design lacks is signage and information about Bar/Shop opening times for example, and where things are located. The current layout is quite confusing and not being used to its full potential.

Currently located at the back of the SSU campus the exterior of the SU looks tired and old and doesn’t exactly look like ‘The place to be’.

• Glass façade to be open and inviting • Small atrium space on inside of entrance, cut

through the first three floors, also creating an open and inviting feel, welcoming you to the space

• Nautical style canopy over main entrance

Currently there are 11,535 registered students

84% full time students/ 16% part time

59% male/ 41% female

66% young/ 34% mature

84% UK students/ 16% overseas

The Beachcomber Inn, Butlins, Bognor Regis Here is an existing nautical inspired interior for a restaurant. Though I think a design like this would be to formal for a student union. The use of the ‘beach hut’ for seating booths is a unique idea. This could be incorporated into the Solent SU redesign with a more modern twist. I intend to develop this idea into the design.

SCARPETTA, FONTAINEBLEAU MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA Located in the historic Fontainebleau Hotel, Scarpetta has set a new standard for Italian dining in Miami. The sophisticated and light interior incorporates subtle nautical and mid-century motifs. Marble mosaic, twine and bespoke leathers in shades of blue reinforce the concept
