“We never can just stop time. Or take moments back. Life doesn’t work that way, does it?” – author Christine Feehan

It’s funny how everything can change in a fleeting moment. The moment you meet a new friend and instantly click, sparking a lifelong friendship. The moment you set eyes on a newly-born member of your family, and know that your lives will forever be connected. The moment you fall in love and know nothing can ever be the same. I’m reminded of moments such as these as I sit with businesswoman, mum and widow Claire Zammit Xuereb. Claire has bravely accepted to talk out, for the first time, about the moment that changed her life forever – the moment her husband Duncan was murdered in their home on New Year’s Day this year, leaving her tiny twins without the father who loved them so much and her without the husband she adored. Because moments don’t just change your life for the better; they can also transform it for the worse. But despite the horror and heartbreak, nothing can rob Claire of her memories of Duncan and, as she shows me photos of their travels, wedding and the happy

days that followed the birth of their babies, she is determined to remember each one as vividly as possible. Some snapshots cause a giggle, others bring a tear, but throughout our time together I am struck by her incredible strength. Somehow, Claire has managed to look deep into the memory of that fateful moment on 1 January 2012 and find a cause to move forward and a reason to hope. Her story, of the days and weeks that followed, is filled with emotion, sorrow, courage and inspiration. You can find it on page 21 and I’m sure it will make compelling reading. So with that in mind, I hope that Claire’s story, among the many others in this magazine, will encourage you to seize every joyful moment and make it matter.

Here’s to a healthy, happy and memorable summer.

Happy reading,

Born in Sweden to a Swedish mum and Maltese dad, 27-year-old David Camenzuli is easily one of Malta’s most successful models. Now living in Dubai, he has worked with some of the world’s leading designers, including Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein, and has been the cover star for international magazines including Esquire. Here he tells his story. “I’ve been involved in the modelling industry for quite a while now. It all started one night when I was at a local club with some friends and a model scout from Elite Model Management approached me. He asked if I’d ever considered modelling, and whether I’d be interesting in signing with them and having them represent me. I thought they were joking! “Even when it turned out he wasn’t, I didn’t give it much importance as I didn’t know much about the scene back then. We simply swapped emails and I didn’t think too much about it. But just two weeks later I got a call from the owner of the agency asking if I could fly to Milan for a job. I could, and I did… and that was that! “There have been some incredible highlights since, including getting to work with designers whose work I really love and respect – like Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Armani and Dsquared. And sometimes getting to keep the clothes isn’t too bad either! “I was also fortunate enough to get to model for covers of two of my favourite magazines – Harpers Bazaar and Esquire. Both were pretty memorable shoots and big moments for me.“When it comes to my style inspiration, I guess I get it from all around me – the media, people, street style, magazines, the news and anything. I think that your style should always, in some way, reflect your personality. I’m not the sort of person to follow trends. I like things that are unique and different and, for me, it’s got to be a mix of inspiration and comfort. As for things that inspire me in other aspects of my life, well, the list is endless. People definitely influence me too, especially the ones I care about. “Being based in Dubai is fantastic; it’s a great place to be as there’s so much going on. I’ve lived there for about four years now, and find it to be safe, welcoming and exciting. I feel

You may walk away from the beach with a sun tan but that’s not all you’re getting. Sun exposure accelerates the effects of ageing resulting in uneven skin tone, darker pigmentation and freckles, age spots as well as redness and broken veins. At Persona Med-Aesthetic Centre, our specialists offer you tailor-made solutions, using the latest cutting edge technologies from IPL and chemical peels to fractional and resurfacing lasers, that are effective and safe, to meet your expectations whilst ensuring your wellbeing.

Lip enhancing treatment

Lip tissue is different to the skin of the rest of the face. The soft tissue of the lips is adversely affected by constant movement and external environmental factors, making them more susceptible to dehydration. Lip augmentation can enhance or restore a fuller shape to the lips, and replenish lost water. It replaces missing volume and defines the contour of the lips, thereby increasing self-confidence through a more sensuous look.

At Persona, we understand that everyone’s ideal lip shape and size is different. We want to know what yours is. Be it softer, smoother or fuller lips you are after, we have the right treatment for you.

very lucky, though, because it’s not so much the place, but the amazing people who make it fantastic. It’s almost like I have a second family. I will definitely spend a couple more years there but, at the end of the day, home is where the heart is, and that will always be Malta. “When I’m not working I do my best to spend every moment with

close friends and family. I enjoy going to the gym and cooking because, in my opinion, how you spend your time determines your health. What I like about exercise and keeping in shape is the feeling of satisfaction it gives you. Knowing that you are looking

after your body and mind, keeping healthy and looking your best is a really good feeling. “After a busy day, I look forward to some quiet time – a nice meal, meeting up with friends or watching a movie with my girlfriend Carla. “Carla and I met through a mutual friend a little over a year ago, and

we’ve been together ever since. She’s ‘Latina’ (from Mexico) so she’s very fiery and passionate, which I love about her. She also models herself, so she’s very supportive of everything I do and she likes to think of herself as my Number One fan – after my mum

of course! “At the moment I really am enjoying every individual aspect of my life. Modelling can be competitive, but it has helped me to travel the world, visit the most incredible places imaginable and meet some very exciting people. It gives me the chance to compare different mentalities and cultural

differences, and I believe I am much more open-minded as a result. “Knowing I have friends across the globe is wonderful as it gives me the opportunity to see and learn so much. I am certainly enjoying the ride!”

Ralph Lauren, Armani and Salvatore Ferragamo are some of my favourite designers, but that’s not all that fashion is all about for me. If I like something, and I feel it looks good, then I’ll wear it, no matter what brand it is.

New York is my favourite shopping destination because it has everything imaginable – from vast department stores to chichi designer boutiques and lots of different and unique shops in between. You name it, NYC has it. I love that.

When it comes to fashion must-haves, I’d be lost without a casual/smart blazer, a fitted pair of jeans and a smart pair of shoes. But, to be completely honest, the only two items that I would never leave the house without are my watch and a comfortable pair of CK underwear!

If I had to pick one person who inspires my career and style, it would have to be David Beckham. He’s a fantastic athlete and seems to be a great family man. Plus, at the same time, he manages to make everything he wears look good.

I enjoy socialising, but I’m not that fussy about where I am; it’s more about the people I am with. I would honestly rather socialise on a bus stop with people I enjoy spending time with, than find myself at the fanciest club in the world with someone I have nothing to say to.

Thailand is easily my favourite place in the world. It’s the perfect blend of stunning climate, inimitable views, amazing sandy beaches, excellent cuisine and great street markets. Plus there’s plenty to see, do and experience, and the people are among the friendliest on the planet.

What am I passionate about? Happiness, and the things that make me happy. I believe that boils down to healthy living, good food, great music and, above all, family and friends.

As a well-known busineswoman, Claire Zammit Xuereb is used to being in the public eye. But never has the reality of that been more evident than on New Year’s Day this year, when her beloved husband, 33-year-old Duncan Zammit, was viciously stabbed to death in the home the couple shared with their twin newborn babies, Millie and Jack. Claire, who lived through the attack, explains that she watched Duncan retaliate and fatally stab his attacker, in self-defence, and in protection of her and

their children. Thus the incident left two men dead that night, causing nation-wide speculation and sparking extensive interest from both the general public and the media. But beneath all that is Claire’s heart-breaking, personal story of the night she lost her husband, best friend and the father of her then three-month old babies, changing all of their lives forever. Now, six months on, Claire agrees to meet with me at her parents’ home, where she has been staying since that fateful day. Unable to return to her own

home since the tragedy, Claire has found solace here and is slowly gaining the strength to pick up the pieces and build a new life for her and her children. As she talks to me, openly and frankly, I make it clear that I am not there to speculate on the gossip and rumours that surrounded the case in the days and weeks that followed it. Instead, we discuss the difficulties that engulfed her, the daily challenges that threatened her will to live, and her renewed hopes and dreams for the future. Here, in her own words, is her story.

“NO HumaN SHOuld HaVE TO SEE WHaT I SaW THaT NIgHT”

A few months ago, CLAIRE zAmmIT XUEREB was living on a cloud in the glow of her happy marriage and the recent birth of her twins. But all that changed when tragedy struck

on New year’s Day this year and her husband was murdered in their Sliema home. Speaking out for the first time since his death, Claire talks to JO CARUANA about the

excruciating weeks that followed, the heartbreak of losing her soulmate in such a horrific way, and the new-found spirituality that has helped her begin the process of healing.

“New Year’s Eve 2011 was such a celebration for our family and a truly happy moment. For Duncan and I it was our first festive season as parents, so we decided to stay home and enjoy the night with both sets of our parents. It was a special celebration right at the pinnacle of our love.“Looking back I often think how easily things could have been different, as my mum eagerly tried to convince Duncan and I to sleep over at her and my dad’s house that night instead of celebrating at our home, but we decided to stay in Sliema, enjoying the serenity of such a special night. Plus we didn’t want to take the children out quite yet – I guess we were just being the protective parents we are!“That evening I was a new mum,

surrounded by my family and on top of the world. I can honestly say, hand on heart, that I was the happiest woman alive. In that very moment it was as if we were recognising everything we had come to be… we danced to our wedding song, All We Need Is Love, and Duncan showed videos of my pregnancy, the few hours after I gave birth and our little ones’ developments day-by-day. We were all ecstatic and contentment filled our home. “Never could I have imagined what lay in store for us. “What changed, in the hours after we went to bed, still leaves me speechless to say the least. I literally awoke to find myself in the middle of a horrific nightmare, watching my husband fighting for his life by my side. The contrast, with the happy moments we shared right before

that, shocked every inch of my body.“How do you ever come to terms with being woken by a man, dressed in black, standing in your bedroom and stabbing your husband? I instantly seized up, mentally and physically, thinking I was somehow living the most dreadful nightmare imaginable. In fact, I often tell my family that I feel lucky to be able to talk, see, hear and walk, as all my senses, or at least some of them, could have easily gone after experiencing what I did.“We’ve all seen the scary movies and been afraid of the dark, right? We all fear the moment someone could break into our homes and shatter our peaceful lives. But we always push those thoughts out of our minds. After all, if we’re not safe in our home and in our beds, where are we safe? Even at the time I remember

thinking that, surely, this couldn’t be happening to us.“But it was. The intrusion of that night shattered everything we had worked so hard for. Right then, at the happiest moment of our lives, everything came crashing down in an instant. Every parent out there will know what I’m talking about – the wonder of lying in bed with your newborns by your side. That feeling is so truly special that it cannot be described in words – even the smell is synonymous. They were very special moments. But all too soon they were gone. No one should have to see what I saw that night. “In this new life I have come to be in, I feel Duncan with me, wherever I go, including now. Otherwise I am sure I would not be talking to you today. He is such an incredible person and we were

completely right for one another; I never stopped celebrating how lucky I was to be married to him. We met at work and our relationship developed over time. After six years of hard toil on our careers, we finally felt it was time to start a family and wanted to dedicate as much energy as possible to our children. Duncan had a job in business and wanted to dedicate a lot of time to the kids, and I intended to juggle my various roles around being with our twins as much as possible. We had it all perfectly planned. “Now, just a few months on, I am broken by the knowledge I am on this journey physically without him, but I know he’s with me every step of the way, and I am learning how to have him with us in his new form. “Duncan was my best friend in every sense

of the word and a really incredible person; it breaks my heart to think our children won’t know him properly. But he will be part of their everyday lives, through videos that we took and entries in the journal we kept for them, as well as the albums and dozens of notes that our friends have made in tribute to him. I want them to know what a wonderful daddy they have – how hands-on and dedicated he was. He was a peacemaker and a fantastic friend to everyone he knew. Now he is their angel and protector in a different form.“But as if the pain hasn’t been difficult enough, absorbing the speculation around what happened has been excruciating. The media and some members of the public have said some very hurtful things, but I put all that down to innocence, accompanied with some ignorance. My

only thought of comfort is that I am sure they do not truly understand what they are saying and doing. If they had to really reflect on the situation as if it were their own in the happiest, most unexpected moment of their lives, they would know how cruel their actions are. “In fact, having Duncan’s life judged like that made me think of the Passion of Christ and those who judged him. It’s hurtful, horrid and brutal, but in some ways I understand their fear of the unknown. After all, who would want to believe that such a violent, random attack could take place within the safety of our little island?“But it saddens me so much to see the ugly way in which some people depicted Duncan. We loved each other so deeply and had a wonderful marriage; so much so that we struggled to exist without each other. Those who knew him know how much he didn’t deserve any of the negative things that were said. Instead we should make a monument out of the love and happiness that always beamed out of him, no matter what time or day. We had a perfectly happy and healthy marriage, and Duncan brought joy to all those around him. How could anyone vilify him after what happened? He was stabbed in his sleep right next to me and his children! How can it be called a ‘double murder’ when he saved his own children and wife in self-defence? It’s hearing hurtful things like that that threaten to take away the little life that I have left. But I believe what I know to be true: Duncan died saving our lives that night. He fought for us until his very last breath and paid the highest price for love. “Today I pray to God and to Duncan constantly, hoping for the patience and peace to wait silently until the police investigations are concluded. It’s not that I need them – I was there, I know what happened – but I want to reveal the truth about what a wonderful and a beautiful person Duncan is, especially after such a heroic act towards his family. For me,

the less I hear the better, as I am always immediately transported back to that night, desperately wishing I was still asleep. After all this, I find myself asking: where are the values of humanity?“For weeks I was under such shock that I could barely feel my skin. The hardest part of all this is having to accept that this really happened to our family, and that Duncan is no longer with us. I was living in a void and in complete darkness. Six months on I still get horrible flashbacks. My eyes have seen what no human being should ever have to witness and my worst

fear was made reality. At first I could only nap for short periods, terrified to fall asleep again. Slowly I have gotten a little better, but fear still grips and wakes me in the middle of the night. So I have become accustomed to grabbing hold of the rosary beads that I keep beside my bed, and which were given to me by my mother and colleagues, and praying myself to sleep. “Help – like the gift of rosary beads and in so many other forms – is what I remember in the days that followed 1 January. A lot of familiar faces were looking down on me in disbelief and pity. I don’t remember those days very clearly though; it was very misty to me. All my senses seemed to have gone numb. I felt like an empty vessel, running on empty and broken into a million pieces. Nothing was the same. Everything smelt, felt and tasted differently. “But thanks to my family, Duncan’s family, our friends and colleagues, I managed to pick myself up off the floor a little at a time. Our home was inundated with people – some cooked for everyone or ran errands, some helped with the nappies and bottles, and others simply stood by me and listened to what I had to say over and over again. Duncan wasn’t only the most caring daddy but also the most loving husband. I depended on him for everything – he was the one to cook and do the shopping, and he always opted to stay in with our little ones if I had to work or run errands. So, when he wasn’t around anymore, I couldn’t recognise myself or my life.“Every time I collapsed, I felt Duncan pick me up and push me slowly to be with our little ones; and that’s what I did. Their needy eyes, gazing at me, broke me into pieces. How could I explain to them that their loving father and most exemplary dad was murdered? How can we explain that such bad things happen to good people, even when we are so loving to mankind? “I talk to Duncan constantly. I pray to him too, and ask him to guide me as he always has done, and to keep protecting us.

“Because while I wasn’t especially religious before, prayer and spirituality have become vital crutches for me since that night and I call on them often. I hope to be able to sleep in the dark again one day too, being able to close my eyes and remain calm, without panicking and turning the light on again within seconds. So far I still find it very difficult to escape the memories of that night. “But pity is not an option. If I dared give in to the awfulness of what happened, I would have drowned in my own tears weeks ago, taking my whole family and network of close friends with me. Whenever I am faced with those images – so stark and gruesome – I choose to focus on Duncan’s

braveness and love for us instead. Watching him give his last breath to save us has given me an inner strength I never knew existed; it’s indescribable. It’s often what gets me through the day, as I keep telling myself that he didn’t fight for us for nothing. “Aside from the flashbacks, I find myself repeating the only words Duncan said during the attack over and over in my head; so much so that they echo constantly. I remember him shouting out ‘ghandna t-tfal!’ (we have children), begging the killer to have mercy on us, and telling me, ‘aqbad il-mobile u cempel lill-pulizija’ (get your mobile and call the police).

Both phrases sounded high pitched and frantic, and I know now that they were said with his last breaths as he did everything he could to protect us. After that, I watched him fall to the ground and pass away. I still get shivers every time I think about it; the kind of shivers that will run down my spine for as long as I live. That pain is indescribable. “Now, when I reflect on the killer and his actions, I choose to believe that he didn’t know what he was doing. That is probably the only thought that will lead me to, one day, forgive and let go. And it’s the same thought that ran through my head that morning. “Acceptance has become a big part of my

moving forward; I know I cannot dwell on what happened, both for my own benefit and that of my children. I haven’t been back to our home in Sliema since that night, and have instead moved in with my family. They – my parents and sister – have been so welcoming of us all – the children, our beloved pets, and me. I know that it is not physically or emotionally easy for them, and I will be forever grateful. I must take this opportunity to particularly thank my mother, who literally dedicated herself entirely to help the little ones and me. If it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t have been able to have the right peace of mind and to find

the time to heal. For the latter, there are two people in particular who have helped me immensely and, without them, I would not be able to speak in this way today. They have taken their own time to listen to all my fears, witness all my tears and re-direct me accordingly – not by telling me, but by inspiring me. This is very special. “It is also here, in my parents’ house, that I have dedicated a room to Duncan, and I spend hours in it, talking to him, remembering and praying. The walls in there are covered in photos of Duncan and I, as well as of Duncan’s own beautiful photography. It has become a space of solace, where I can think, contemplate, philosophise and recover, both alone and

with the people who have been there for me every step of the way. Among them, Duncan’s parents and siblings have been incredible pillars of support to me, even though they have suffered immeasurably themselves. “In times like these we build very special and rewarding friendships we had never thought of before. In my case, I refer to these people as my support group – they have spent countless hours keeping me company, sent hundreds of emails to entertain me, and shared many precious moments of truth. On 12 April, Duncan’s birthday, I invited our close friends to lunch

– firstly to thank them for their support and energy, and secondly to use the opportunity to celebrate Duncan’s presence in our lives. It was going to be a hard day for everyone, so I figured that we might as well be together and keep Duncan alive in the best way we knew how. It is all up to us. God gives us a situation, and we are responsible for dealing with that consequence. “I am determined that none of this shall have been in vain, as I intend to make a positive difference. Just weeks ago I treated life as a luxury because I didn’t know any different. I am grateful for every breath I take, to the point of satisfying myself with as a little as just that, but as much as all that too! The fact that I remained alive has affected me a lot. Living in the now, I realise that I have become more conscious and aware of everything, and in doing so found the value of life to be priceless.“I also put all my energy into spirituality and yoga, to unblock me and help me strengthen myself from within, as well as writing. This time, writing without Duncan in the journal we started for our children during my pregnancy, serves to pass on his message. I want to inspire our children, and others, that good is stronger than evil, and that love always conquers. Love is everything. It is what gives us strength and energy to transmit goodness and be better people every day. When love is strong, it lives on in a different form, once we become spiritual beings. It helps us recognise and appreciate the effect it left behind. Writing is helping me to vent everything that is going on inside me, while transmitting positivity to those that read this, and also allowing me to identify with the new me as

I rebuild myself step by step. I have always been told that I am a woman on a mission; I now understand what that mission is – to help others get through pain, whatever that may be. God and Duncan kept our children and I alive for a reason, and I must ensure I fulfil it. “Of course I felt horribly guilty early on, and there were days when I was convinced I didn’t deserve to be alive. In the weeks after New Year’s Day, life stopped still. I couldn’t bear sounds or silence and I switched off completely. I simply couldn’t see a way through the pain. That went on until, one day, a friend said: ‘Claire, you are alive and you deserve to be. You must choose to live’.“Those words struck me and served as a turning point. I made the decision to start living again: to keep dreaming of all the things Duncan and I wanted for our children… all the places we wanted to take them and the things we wanted to show them. Our children became my reason for being, and with them in mind I made baby steps towards recovery. “In many ways it’s as if Duncan knew what was going to happen because he didn’t leave a stone unturned. Every bow was neatly tied; there wasn’t one thing that I needed

to finish for him or vice versa. We had even planned every aspect of the way we wanted to bring up our little ones and the values we wanted to instil in them – penning them in a journal – and I am so incredibly grateful for that now. So the hopes and plans we had are there and will continue to be achieved. I’d like to see Duncan’s values, principles and approach to life reflected in our children. He always saw the good before the bad, and I found that really beautiful; it makes all the difference. In spite of what happened to us, achieving this would mean the world to me. “As for my own achievements, I look forward to, somehow, being able to turn this situation into something positive for my family and other people. I would like to help others to overcome tragedy and pain in general, and to learn to overcome things they feel they cannot accept or tackle. I might publish the book that I am writing to our little ones as my commitment to help others and ourselves. Whilst I write, I am expressing love, my interpretation of life and how I think that the good we do and leave behind will always manifest itself if we allow it to. It’s so important to feel more with the heart than with the mind, and to free ourselves from pain. We have all got

that inner strength inside of us, allowing us to heal ourselves and others, and to use the energies that connect us all to the universe. “On another note, I would like to impart the important knowledge that I have gained – we are not alone. No matter how lonely we may be feeling, even when surrounded by so many people, we must remember that we are only as lonely and alone as we want to be. It only takes a few words to start a conversation, to eventually open our hearts to heal and feel freer, away from all that pain. It can start from a simple ‘good morning’ said routinely every day for weeks or months. That routine will start to give some form of stability and security. It can later be developed into a freer and less structured form – just give it the time it needs and let it happen naturally and organically. One day you will wake up with the desire to take it further. That seed you’d planted will bear fruit, and the results will be the best you could have ever hoped for. It is then that you can start to rebuild yourself as new and start to identify new things as we walk along paths we have never taken before. Explore this new road of self-discovery. I am not talking about becoming a completely changed person, but a person, perhaps, with more insight and who is more conscious of their environment. This helps us to answer why we are here; it brings us closer to the universe and in turn, to ourselves.“By making other people my mission I have given myself a goal for my own life. For me, tragedy would come from giving into my situation, sitting back and doing nothing. I want to do good and inspire others to do good too. Slowly but surely, we will all contribute towards a better and more peaceful world. I always liked to philosophise on life and this is giving me the perfect environment to bring it out: to turn negative energy into positive energy.“A dear friend of mine taught me about the lotus flower – a beautiful and strong breed that grows on dirt and rises above it. I would like this flower to be our inspiration and to have many lotus flowers

spread around us, so that they are in complete abundance. I would love to see honesty, humility, comfort, peace, patience, love and understanding rule. Once we see the light, we shall always follow it. Of course I would like to help people on a daily basis and turn my thoughts into

action. If I can make it, we can all make it. It is our duty to fulfil our purpose on earth. “I keep telling people I want to become a better person. The feedback I get is ‘Claire, you are already a good person’. But I want to be an even better person every day and to absorb every detail – the smell of the herbs and flowers around me, the sensation of the wind brushing my skin and the feel of the earth beneath my feet. I want to

learn something new from life every day, to account for what good I have done and to keep building. I am going through a shift, from being that person consumed by the fastness of life and ignoring my inner self, to someone who appreciates and takes in every moment so as to give it all back to those around me and to the universe. I am becoming more conscious, and when we do things consciously, their value becomes priceless. It gives more life. We learn how to let go of the physical and become more spiritual. “Today I look to the future for me and our children and know, in my heart of hearts, that Duncan is still very much a part of our lives; he’s just in a different, bigger form now. Duncan’s love for the three of us was too great to simply stop with his death. This is just the beginning of the rest of our lives. My business and work will always be an important part of my world, but I plan on adopting a new approach. “During the funeral, at the cemetery, I read a letter I had written to Duncan the night of 1 January. In it I expressed how we shouldn’t allow evil to overcome good. So, with every new year, we shall remember the new life that Duncan gave us. It will always be an emotional period, of course, but I will strive to bring out Duncan’s positivity in every way I can.”“The day he died Duncan handed me a second chance at living. He lost his life giving our children and me a new one. As we all know, second chances don’t come along very often, so I don’t intend to waste it. It would be too sad for me to fall into the routine I had. That Claire died that night, with Duncan. The old Claire only made sense with Duncan physically beside her. The new me involves Duncan on a different, bigger level and includes new things in my life that I never had the chance to do. “Here I am, starting again, and I am just six months old in this new life that Duncan has given me. I intend to make every moment count and really will be living as if there is no tomorrow.”

With the London Olympics just around the corner, all eyes are on the sporting world. To celebrate that, this issue of STyLE ON SUNDAy meets accomplished and stylish players

across five very sophisticated sports – sailing, cricket, tennis, polo and golf.

SpORTy & IN STylE

ElainE GEnovESE has been the Malta ladies Tennis Champion for the past five years. She also works as a part-time coach and has a degree in psychology. “My father introduced me to tennis when I was a little girl and I loved playing against other children. By the time I was eight I started taking it more seriously, and was travelling abroad to play by the time I was 10. There are no half-measures in this sport – I train daily for three hours, spending two hours on the court and another one on physical preparation. It’s tough but I wouldn’t have it any other way. “I’m a very competitive person, so that side

of things thrills me. I also love the travelling that’s involved and getting to compete against foreign players whenever possible. You can’t play tennis to a high level if you’re not competitive; abroad everyone is really tough and you have to be willing to fight the fight. “Aside from being the Malta Ladies Champion, I’m also proud to have won a bronze medal at the Small Nations Games in Cyprus and to have obtained three Women’s Tennis Association points. I hope to rank in the future, too. “Tennis isn’t that popular in Malta and I don’t think it’s given as much importance as some

other sports. I think that more international events should be hosted here, as that would encourage locals to get involved. “Playing at this level does affect my social life in many ways – I can’t be out partying the night before a big game, but I don’t mind at all. Most people know me as ‘the tennis player’ – which is fine because I adore the game and wouldn’t like to be recognised any other way. I would have loved to take part in the 2011 Small Nations Games, but I couldn’t as I was finishing my degree thesis. Now I’m back with renewed vigour! I want to keep playing professionally for as long as I can before concentrating on other

aspects of my career. “I really look up to the current World Ladies Number One, Victoria Azarenka; I love her style and attitude on the court. Style has definitely become more integral to tennis, especially thanks to players like the Williams Sisters. It’s all about bright colours, nail polish and big earrings. That’s part of the fun now!”

andy BorG has been a pro-player twice in his golfing career; he currently has a handicap of plus two and a world amateur golf ranking. andy works in property, is married to debbie and has three young daughters. “I really got into golf when I was 18, which is already quite late by international standards as most youngsters start to take the sport seriously in their early teens. I learnt to play at school in England and my dad was always keen. When I came to Malta on holiday one year he told me that, if I wanted to earn my allowance, I would have to join in on the golf course – so I did. That summer I met someone my own age who I could play against and we competed non-stop. It sparked a marked improvement in me and I started to take it all more seriously. “Since then I have gone pro on two occasions, playing professional circuits and making a

living off the game. That happened for a stint of three years when I was 24 in the UK, and again when I was 30 and living in Florida. I’m proud of my achievements in the game, such as achieving a plus-two handicap (the average among non professional players is usually 17 or 18). I also achieved a World Amateur Golf Ranking in Greece in 2009, and fared well in the Mediterranean Games. “Sadly there are no professional opportunities for players in Malta. There are no tournaments either, largely because there’s only one course. Nevertheless the game is developing well thanks to the strong youth programme in place. There are some very good up-and-coming players, some of whom hope to turn pro and do stand a good chance. “My love for the game comes from the challenge of it. I’m drawn to the technical side and the mechanics – the swing of the club and the workings of the human body create an incredible combination of man and machine. Plus there’s the psychological side to it, as you learn to deal with yourself, your reactions and the conditions on the day. My goal is always to keep learning more about all that, and to keep getting better. “Golf is quite well-known for the social side of

the sport. The ‘19th hole’ is the club bar, where we go after a game. I have a group of friends which plays together and it’s a lot of fun, but you also make friends in the game itself and get to meet people from all sorts of walks of life. The good thing about golf is that you’re not limited to playing against someone of your standard – you can play against someone much worse or better and still win. “Year on year golf also continues to become more stylish. From the types of materials used in golf gear to the colours of their accessories, the pros like to stamp their own individual style onto the game – whether that’s classic or trendy.”

JErEMy BESanCon is the coach for the Malta Polo academy and plays polo at a 0 goal handicap. He is also studying French and archaeology at the University of Malta.“I first got into polo when I was 14. My dad, who rode horses in France for most of his life, introduced me to horses here in Malta and I was immediately hooked. I didn’t have a great record in other sports, and was actually known to be the worst football goalkeeper in my hometown when I was growing up, so turning to horses was a good move!

“What fascinated me most is the connection between horse and rider – and it’s probably something that only riders can understand. When you manage to master this partnership, and become one with the horse, that’s when the fun kicks in. The adrenaline really starts pumping!“Polo has always been considered an elitist sport, in fact it is known as the ‘Game of the Kings’. But polo in Malta is accessible to all; our small community is very open and we are always eager to have new players around. “People may be surprised to learn that the Malta Polo Club is actually the oldest one in Europe, founded in 1868 by the British. The sport has been played here ever since, and is looking at a brighter future with the inauguration of the Malta Polo Club Academy. Of course there are a few obstacles for newbies – such as the initial cost for horses and equipment when you start up, but things will change now that the academy has been set up as we strive to meet the needs of both beginners and more experienced players. “My best polo memory so far would have to be my five-month trip to New Zealand in 2009. I learnt so much about training horses while I was there and got to play some amazing games. But I enjoy the buzz of every game, and going to the clubhouse afterwards to share a drink with the crowd is fun and their support is always welcome. As

Napoleon said: ‘When you win you deserve it, and when you lose you need it’.”  andrEW naUdi is Malta’s national cricket captain, who juggles life on the pitch with a job at an international betting company. “I was in my last year at primary school when a friend of mine was leaving the island and we decided to spend the day at the Marsa Sports Club. We had a go at all the sports and cricket was one of them. I got hooked and the rest is history. Today it’s part of my daily routine and how I stay in shape!  “Initially it was the new challenge that excited me. The thought of hitting or bowling a ball as hard or as fast as I could was exhilarating. Plus, the encouragement I got from the senior players at the club was second to none. I had watched quite a lot of cricket on TV but hadn’t realised that there were so many technical aspects to master.“When I started playing in 1994 there were many British ex-pats who joined the locals for cricket. Now the majority of players are Maltese. Our fixture calendar consists of two domestic leagues, summer and winter, along with many matches played against touring teams. Over the years, the number of touring teams has increased. Most are British but we also get some visitors from as far afield as Australia, New Zealand and America.

“There have been many highlights. At 14 I played against a touring MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club) side. At 15 I represented Malta at international level and have been doing so ever since, and at 17 I attended a European Cricket Academy in Edinburgh. While in England I was invited to join the Zimbabwean national team at practice nets; showing off my skills to professionals was a dream come true. I have met many other international cricket professionals and have toured abroad with the national cricket team as a player on nine occasions. Now I’ve been selected as the captain for the forthcoming European Championships being held in Corfu in September. “I would certainly like to see more youngsters coming through the grades. Youth cricket is developing, however it’s a struggle to get the teenage juniors to stay in the sport. This is probably due to the academic pressures and the variety of other sports on offer. We need to find the financial and human resources to take the game to these juniors. “The wonderful thing about cricket in Malta is that it is followed by people of all ages. Win, lose or tie, we always end up in the bar to analyse the outcome of a match. The banter from players and spectators is fantastic. They’re like a second family to me and we get together regularly to watch and discuss the game, and occasionally let

our hair down! “I’d give cricket an eight out of 10 for style. Traditionally, cricket is played in ‘whites’ and sometimes they even stop for lunch and tea. It’s not uncommon to wear your ‘Sunday Best’ at a test match abroad. Nowadays, with the introduction of the shorter versions of the game, cricket has become a lot more appealing to watch and is very colourful. Most players want to be seen using or wearing the latest in equipment and clothing to keep up to date with the ‘style element’… but it certainly doesn’t stop the grass stains!”

SEBaSTian riPard is a semi-professional sailor who has just spent two years campaigning for the olympics in the 49er class.“I was so young when I got into sailing that I can’t quite remember how it all began. I guess it’s all down to my parents’ passion for the sport and the sea. “Two things drew me to this sport in particular: my competitive spirit and the fact I am good at it – and I’m not the sort of person who is good at every sport he tries. Right from the beginning I was hooked, and had more and more drive to keep competing and training. Plus, it’s a very complex sport, with a lot of immeasurable variables such as the wind and the sea. I really enjoy the complex natural aspects of it. I relish being outside too, and having a good run around with some friendly competition. “But sailing has actually progressed really slowly in Malta, although it is making strides. We have developed both the dinghy scene and the yachting scene but only at a very limited and amateur level. I think the problem is that, in Malta,

STYle IN-DEPTH

sporting culture isn’t strong enough and isn’t given enough social importance, which affects sponsorship, government support and the number of young people willing to go against the grain and take the leap from amateur to professional. “I’d like to see more young, local athletes competing in top world events in the Optimist and Olympic classes. Malta needs to have a sailing presence at the Olympics. It is absurd that a nation like Malta, which has such a strong marine heritage, is not represented on the sailing world stage. Meanwhile we also need to take advantage of our climate, which is perfect for sailing all year round. We are missing out on a massive market

by not investing in the necessary infrastructure to host more top sailing events in our home waters.“But my highlights have certainly been worth it so far. In the dinghy sailing arena it was coming 25th at the French stopover of the Sailing World Cup series in the 49er class, while in yachting it would have to be winning the Rolex Middle Sea Race. “There’s the wonderful lifestyle aspect to sailing and the social scene that goes with it. The great thing about it is that most people who are involved in the sport have a similar take on life. We are all quite adventurous and like a good party – I guess sailors are a little infamous for their partying and drinking! “And yes, a style element comes into that too - sebago docksiders, slam shorts and musto polo tops quickly spring to mind. The funny thing about sailing is that, as such an international sport, it is amusing to see how each crew have different styles depending on which country they’re from. If you ask me, I’d say it was definitely the Swedes and Italians that take the ‘style’ side of sailing very, very seriously!”

Style on Sunday meets local personality Gianni Zammit to find out more about his latest venture. Besides being in the events and entertainment industry his latest venture is a top-end childcare facility!“Well actually we have been looking into the possibility of developing the childcare concept for a number of years now, simply because we identified the gap in the market where working-parent-oriented and reliable childcare is concerned. In Malta we are used to leaving our kids ‘ghand in-nanna’,” Gianni says. “For one, not everyone has that option and secondly, nothing against our loving grandmas, but how much more sense would it make if we could leave our children in a place where they would be taken care of by professionals, meet children their age to play with and not be stuck ‘fis-salott’ watching Beautiful!” Having had his own child, Kay, just three years ago, Gianni feels that the need for premier childcare is ever-prevalent. “There is a persistent problem for families with both parents working and therefore an increase in demand for good quality childcare. It’s not easy to juggle commitments nowadays, believe me, I know, I’m living it! So, when the perfect opportunity we had been looking for manifested itself, in a nutshell, we took it!” Who are the people behind this new venture? and how will you be catering for different childcare requirements? The YoYo Childcare Centre is run by MiChild Ltd. The company directors, Josef Gafa`and

Gianni Zammit are also the brains behind one of the most innovative and creative events and entertainment companies on the island – JUGS Malta. The YoYo Kids Childcare Centre at SkyParks will be managed by Dorianne Buhagiar who, with over 12 years’ experience, is a certified childcare professional.“I can do events and entertainment, I can do the business side, logistics and planning. I think I’ve earned a couple of brownie points in the fatherhood department too... but to be able to realise our vision and provide a childcare centre that gives the kids that little bit more, it was important to us to bring a childcare professional on board. Dorianne brings that bit of the puzzle to the table. We are not simply offering fun and games in a supervised and safe environment, Dorianne will be putting forward an organised learning and development program based on the principles of the Gardner Theory of Multiple Intelligences and the Montessori Philosophy and Practices,” says Gianni. What sets yoyo Kids apart from other childcare centres that are opening on the island? “Apart from the fact that we are set up with state of the art facilities and experienced and licensed caregivers, we are in business and have set up YoYo to cater for busy parents, like myself ! Not everyone has the luxury or would want to take three years off to stay home with their baby. When kids are on summer holidays we can’t take three months off or rush home because the

kids finish school at 3pm,” says Gianni. “The centre is larger than normal – can take up to 85 kids in 565sqm. The set up is incredible, if I may say. We have custom designed play areas and various age-appropriate zones to cater for learning and development. The Sensory Activity Zone is great for all kids especially those with special needs. It is a stimulating multimedia environment, specifically designed to encourage them to use and explore their senses – I’m tempted to spend a couple of hours in there myself !”Why have you chosen to be situated at SkyParks Business Centre?“SkyParks was an opportunity we couldn’t refuse. Our objective is to provide the highest standards of childcare, and we wanted YoYo to be associated with an entity which is as professional as the services we intend to offer. Being in a first class facility, it would ensure all that is necessary to provide a child appropriate environment,” says Gianni. “Besides the obvious benefit for employees working in the area, at SkyParks parents can have a quiet lunch on the terrace, go to the gym or an appointment at the clinic, whilst being reassured that their children are in good hands for an hour or two.” YoYo Childcare Centre is health and safety compliant, adheres to all national standards in terms of size, safety and number of carers per child among others, and operates in line with international best practice. yoyokidsmalta.com

A CHILDCARE CENTRE WITH A DIFFERENCE Strategically located within a business park and on route to most of the major business zones on the island, yoyo Kids is not just another glorified baby-sitting service. At a time when more and more parents must work to support their family, the real ‘childcare’ concept will finally hit our island later on this year!

THE STyLE REPORTThe new season items we covet for a life of style.

STYle rEPorT

SockS and SandalSIt may seem like the ultimate fashion faux pas (a practice usually reserved for outmoded tourists), but socks+sandals have been given a make over by one of the design world’s very best – Marni. We say go for it, by creating mix-and-match combos of chunky heels and girly socks. marni.com

Blooming marvellouSFlorals can be frumpy, but they can also be bold and beautiful – which is exactly where some of the world’s top designers have taken the trend this season. Gone are the itsy-bitsy buds; this time it’s in with experimental and innovative blooms that explore photoprints, scale and colour. As worn on the catwalks for Peter Som (pictured) and Peter Pilotto.

Jump inIf, like us, you’ve been a little slow to jump on the jumpsuit bandwagon, then this may be your moment to re-think. As seen on celebrities including Rihanna and model Chrissy Teigen, it can be a very versatile investment piece that effortlessly morphs from day to night. StarBlu.com

TeXTureFrom velvet to satin, textured fabric is all the rage as it immediately adds interest to your outfit. lady in red Parisian designer Roland Mouret is known for his classic collections. His summer 12 designs are stunning, including this dress, which is bang on trend with one of this season’s must-see colours – fiery red. The hue was literally splashed all over the place, from clothes and shoes, to swimwear.

SuiTS youWe know it’s hot – but you still want to look smart and stylish, right? Well, A-lister Eva Longoria may be on to something with her latest favourite fashion choice – the short suit. Made popular by designers including Marc Jacobs, it’s perfect for showing off those pins and keeping you cool, while still giving off a business-like edge. marcjacobs.com

The goddeSS in youRalph Lauren and Givenchy are just two of the designers going for Grecian this season and the goddess trend is big news. Perfect for summer, it’s all about free-flowing fabric, snatches of exposed skin and nude colours – just like this stunning number that we can’t wait to throw on and feel divine in. felice-art-couture.com

GeT STArTeDGet your skin in tiptop condition by concealing dark circles – we love PUPA’s Luminys Touch (3) as it treats these circles and illuminates shaded areas of the face. Next, apply foundation all over the face, remembering to blend it into your neck really well. Apply a light dusting of powder to set.

STYLE TIP: You will likely need a darker foundation for the summer, especially if you’ve been soaking up the rays. Choose one with an SPF in it, and consult a beauty therapist on the best shade too.

eYe SHINeA good, pearlescent eye shadow will blend beautifully with the bronze effect. Here we’ve used a creamy gold shade – such as Pupa Diamond Eyeshadow Wet & Dry 04 (2) from the Hot Tropics Summer collection, on the inner corners of the eye, as well as under the eyebrows as a highlighter. We then used an orange shade on the crease and outer corner to increase intensity as we worked away from the tear duct. Orange is right on trend this season, making an appearance for both make-up and clothing.

Then, for a more dramatic look, smudge some dark brown or black along the upper lash line. Exaggerate eyelashes and finish off with black mascara, such as PUPA’s Vamp! Mascara (4).

COlOUr OF SUmmerNext it’s time to get bronzed. Apply bronzer to the most prominent parts of your face in a ‘number three’ kind of motion – on the forehead, cheekbones and jaw line. This will give the effect of a natural, sun-kissed glow. For a bronzed and shimmering effect, apply Planter’s Brightening Dry Oil (1) which

will enhance your tan and hydrate your skin.

GlOSSY FINISHComplete the look with a splash of orange lipstick in a suitable shade for your skin tone, and top with gloss. To combine both, we’ve opted for PUPA’s Hot Tropics Waterfall  Gloss Coral Reef shade 01 (5). Finally, if you want to be extra daring, pair the entire look with a contrasting shade of nail varnish in yellow, green or pink. Contrasting colours are a huge trend right now, as are neon hues. Both will perfectly complement your tan.

Olay Regenerist 3 point treatment Serum and Day Cream.

A true skin care product that lives up to its promise.

The highest ever concentration of OLAY’s signature amino-peptide complex infused with intracellular fortifier and precious marine proteins helps to visibly firm areas prone to sagging, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and enhances your skin’s elasticity and suppleness in the 3 hardest areas to treat – your cheekbones, jaw line and neck.

Serum AND Cream?

The serum and cream have been designed to work together. Layering the serum under the cream will deliver added anti-ageing benefits. 3 point serum and 3 point treatment cream are Olay’s advanced program for firmer looking skin in just 5 days.Because the serum is very quickly absorbed deep into the skin’s outer layers, adding the cream on top creates a locking effect, retaining the moisture and working as protective barrier for up to 24 hours.

• Start with your hands in the prayer position under your chin.• Slowly open your hands and using your jaw line as a guide, firmly and slowly move both hands outwards and upwards in a lifting motion.

• Start with your hands either side of your nose.• Move your hands up and along the sides of your nose using a firm upward sweep.• As you move up and reach the bridge of your nose, gently transfer the pressure to the heel of your hand until it reaches your forehead.

• Turn your head to the left side.• Place left hand across your chest to the open neck area and make upward movements to the jaw line.• Repeat 2 or 3 times and finish with a firm downward stroke into your decolletage.• Repeat on right side of neck using right hand.

“My father always had a boat – back in the 1970s he had a Calypso, a locally-built folk boat – and I would accompany him on all trips. I would even take it out on some early morning escapades of my own,” Georges says with a smile. He explains that although the Beneteau First 47.7 (Escape) is his third boat, he feels he’s hit the nail on the head with this one – finding the perfect balance of speed and comfort. “Before this I had a racing boat, Prima Donna, which was not very comfortable for family weekends. When I chose this boat I knew I wanted to end my obsession with racing and opt for a more comfortable one, for trips with my wife Debbie and our children.“My worst trip ever was definitely the first and only time I participated in the Middle Sea Race with this boat; it was hailing, winds were up to 40 knots and visibility was practically zero. My main fear was losing a person overboard, although safety equipment really helps,” he explains.A member of the Royal Malta Yacht Club Committee for 13 years, 10 of them as Commodore (elected annually by the Committee from among its members, the Commodore nominates Officers to be approved by election), sailing was far more than a hobby for Georges. “I needed a break as it was very tiring and stressful, and now I am planning my summer holidays with family and friends on the north coast of Sicily,” he says, adding that this does not mean he will retire completely from the racing scene. He lists the Middle Sea Race as one of his main accomplishments as Commodore. “When I took over, the race had 15 participants, but today that figure has increased to some 78, including a good number of foreigners. Furthermore we have succeeded in attracting several sponsors, including the prestigious Rolex brand. These sponsors invest heavily in the race and attract more people – but

it took a lot of effort to improve the event, which is now the biggest international event Malta hosts,” he explains. Additionally, when he joined the Committee, there were just a few hundred pounds in the kitty, but when he retired from Commodore last year there were assets in excess of €1 million. Eight long years of negotiations also saw the RMYC get their premises in Ta’ Xbiex on a 49-year lease, after having been squatters on Manoel Island for many years. “From here on I plan to concentrate mainly on sailing and travelling with family and friends, and on my work (as a travel agent). When you’re putting so much time and effort into sailing, you don’t realise how much more you could be dedicating to other things. As the club is ‘ready’, in that I have done what I set out to do and put the club on sound footing, it was time for me to move on,” Georges says. “Sailing takes as much time as you want to give it as a hobby – there are always things to be done when one is a boat owner, as you have to check things regularly. In fact a boat is known as ‘a hole in your

pocket’,” he chuckles.“Boats are expensive to run and maintain, but for me the joys of owning a boat far outweigh the expenses. I wouldn’t say that sailing per se is expensive, it depends on the boat and whether you own it. I believe that sailing can cost as much as you want to put into it. There is also the alternative of joining a sailing club or going sailing with friends. “It’s not hard to find a team to join, and a good way to start would be joining a sailing club. We want to get as many people into sailing as possible, to

make it more accessible and do away with the perception that it is an elitist sport.“The sad truth is that we get hundreds of foreigners interested in joining the Middle Sea Race but very few Maltese. Admittedly you have to be able to withstand the conditions of this race, but the idea is to start small. There are various positive initiatives to get young children into the sport. It is a growing sector but it needs to become more accessible.”

at 83, Gabriel Caruana remains one of Malta’s most celebrated artists ever. He continues to create new art every day, and currently exhibits in america and Holland, as well as locally. “Creating art has always provided me with endless pleasure. I guess an artistic streak is in my blood – my uncle was a painter and my grandmother, a well-known Italian opera singer; both have inspired me. “I started off at the School of Art and found the subject to be very interesting. This got me started on the rest of my artistic education overseas. From then on I started to meet lots of international, avant-garde artists who helped me to propel my own work forward. In fact, meeting the very influential British artist Victor Pasmore was probably a key moment in my life. Back then I asked him to come and see my work and he told me I was certainly on the right

track with it. That validation helped me immensely and I never looked back; Victor and I subsequently became good friends too. “Largely I describe my style as constructivism and I work mostly in clay and plaster of Paris (gypsum plaster). I wouldn’t say that it has changed much over the years, but I’d like to think my work has improved with time. Looking back I’d have to say that I enjoyed the ‘60s and ‘70s very much, they were an inspiring time to work. “Meeting interesting people through my work has always been a highlight of what I do. I have exhibited all over the world, and currently have three exhibitions on in different parts of Washington and another in Holland. I am also the only Maltese person to have a piece on permanent exhibition at the prestigious Museum of

Fine Arts in Faenza, Italy. “Although I am in my 80s now and getting around has become more of a challenge, I choose to keep working with the help of my nephew and wife Mary Rose, who is also an artist. Being in the studio inspires me, and I can’t imagine stopping… I simply pick up my material and keep working until I’m happy with it. It’s impossible to try to work out how many pieces I’ve made in a lifetime. “I’ve had so many highlights, including receiving the Gieh ir-Repubblika for my services to art in Malta, which was a big honour. Nowadays, when I look back at all my pieces, it is impossible to pick a favourite. But knowing that some of my work is in Pasmore’s private collection means more than you can imagine. “The need to create and achieve hasn’t left me just because I have gotten older, and I know it never will.

SCULPTING TREASURES… FOR TODAy & TOmORROW When it was auctioned by Sotheby’s, London, in February 2010, renowned Swiss post-Impressionist painter Alberto Giacometti’s life-size bronze sculpture L’Homme Qui marche achieved the highest price of any sculpture ever sold. Considering that it sold for US$104.3 million, and ranks among the world’s most valuable works of art, it is not surprising that sculptures continue to prove more and more popular with art investors across the world. With that in mind, STyLE ON SUNDAy meets three of malta’s best-known sculptors to discuss their collections, inspirations and successes.

The son of one of Malta’s most renowned contemporary artists, antoine Paul Camilleri, has built a reputation for himself, separate to the one enjoyed by his famous father. “The influence of the environment my siblings and I grew up in, and my father’s philosophy and way of reasoning, have remained with me throughout my life and work as a sculptor.“As the son of one of Malta’s most renowned contemporary artists (Antoine Camilleri), I’m lucky enough to retain many beautiful memories of my father and of growing up at our family home

in Balzan. There was a large garden for us to roam in and seek inspiration from, and it was wonderful to watch our father experimenting with his own work.“The good thing about having his studio at home was that we got to see his entire work process. He also instilled a strong sense of discipline into us, and would insist that, without the basics of design, one could not move on to other things. “His philosophy was that we shouldn’t look too far into the future, and a favourite saying of his was ‘now is eternity’. He was a firm believer in living in here and now. I always regarded my father as a friend, he

was very young at heart and he knew how to live, right until the end. I think the fact that he studied at the Sorbonne in Paris, for three years after the war, and the Parisian way of life, influenced him a great deal.“I believe that art education in Malta needs to improve; it’s something my father strove for his whole life. He loved the family and this is reflected in his work; I am very similar in this sense.“When it comes to my own work, I am constantly experimenting, although clay remains a favourite. For me it isn’t so much about the subject, but rather what you do with it that matters.”

it was the opportunity to take ceramics classes with Gabriel Caruana that set Mario Sammut off down the ceramics route. He has since exhibited in Malta, Cyprus and Germany. “My interest in art is a longstanding one, as from a very young age I was into drawing and painting. But it was only at a later age that my dream of sculpting was realised. I was fortunate enough to have studied art under Antoine Camilleri (senior) and Esprit Barthet. “I always enjoyed making smaller sculptures, but dreamt of making larger ones, too. Then the opportunity to take ceramics classes with Gabriel Caruana cropped up, and since then I have been wholeheartedly into ceramics. I do still paint and draw occasionally, though it is

mostly limited to sketches which are then developed into sculptures. “I draw most of my inspiration from the female figure, and am influenced by the Goddess of Fertility which is synonymous with Malta. In my work, the female figures are elongated and have abundant hips. I give form great importance, but I then do not go into too many detailed features. I also focus a great deal on the pregnant woman and on the mother and child. “For me colour comes secondary. Whereas today modern ceramists take a simple form and distinguish it using colour, my work tends to be monochrome. I work with stoneware clay, which I find to be stronger against the elements, though I have experimented with other

materials and techniques, and also work with bronze on smaller sculptures. “Two of my favourite among my works are one named ‘Family’ and another one which I call ‘Journey of Hope’. Both were exhibited as part of a major exhibition among EU states held in Denmark in 2010.”“I think that, considering our size, there are many exhibitions and a lot of potential in Malta, but children need to be encouraged more to develop their creative side, so that they are not limited to the academic world. “To date I’d say my major artistic accomplishments have been my solo exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, as well as the 2.5 metre sculpture which will soon be installed as public art in Gozo.”

Make it masculine, with large comfortable sofas in durable fabrics.

Scatter cushions to make it homely, but be bold – strong colours and mix-and-match prints will keep things interesting. Play with scale, shape and texture.

Your coffee table doesn’t have to match. In this case a trunk and ottoman (which can double up as extra seating as well as a foot stool) were used. To avoid any stains on fabric upholstery buy a cool tray, which will act as a supportive and durable base for cold beers and movie-night snacks.

Black and white photographs are a decorative win-win – stylish, classy and masculine. You can purchase prints that hit the mark or, better yet, include some shots of your own.

If the little boy inside of you still likes a game or two, keep yourself entertained. Games and boys’ toys are fun, and can look great too, just like this antique-style car and roulette table.

Lamps are a feature in themselves so invest some energy in getting the right ones. They’ll help you add atmosphere and make the space more cosy.

Personal touches make great conversation starters – a plus for when you have new friends over. Everything from pieces of art picked up on your travels to books that reflect your interests.

Bachelorette pads should be all about fun and glamour – but that doesn’t have to mean frilly and full of clutter. Clean lines and a few selected pieces on the shelves will keep things functional. Go for classy not kitsch, avoiding items that are too fluffy and feathery.

You’re bound to have lots of stuff, so storage is vital – but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a lovely set of open shelves like this one. Pretty storage boxes will conceal all your belongings, and look great.

Balance print and colour, and find the focal point of your room. In this case it’s our rug, wall hanging and armchair. To counter that, we’ve kept the cushions and ornaments plain.

Think outside the box when it comes to continuation and don’t be afraid to clash patterns and prints a little. That said, continuation is crucial, so tie your colour scheme together with hues that match.

Choose low maintenace options - the idea behind a bachelorette pad is that you’ll be having too much fun to do anything else!

Yes most women love pink, but you don’t have to! Find your own way of expressing your femininity.

Having children doesn’t mean your space has to be completely taken over by toys – you can still have a chic and stylish home. To make life easier, make choices with them in mind, with childproof surfaces and durable fabrics such as leather, micro fibre, thick plastic and wood.

Kiddie furniture doesn’t need to be an eyesore – just like these pretty white chairs. They match the rest of the room and are convenient for playtime too.

Create an easy solution for storing toys – such as storage boxes or coffee tables with built-in space. Your little ones can learn to pack their belongings away, leaving your room spick and span.

Neutrals are great for family rooms, as you can chop and change accessories as your children grow up. When they are little you may prefer splashes of pastels, while bolder colours become more popular as they get older.

Neutrals with a pop of colour – keeping the basics neutral allows you to add any colour to your rooms. This rug, although colourful, is not bright and allows you to add any colour to your room.

Create cosiness with texture. When choosing your scatter cushions, stick to a colour scheme but choose different fabrics, such as velvets, linens, satins, wools and weaves.

Allow the whole family to contribute to the space. Yes clear lines are great, but so is a bit of organised chaos. A family room should feel like a family room, so don’t be afraid to let your children make their mark.
