Design elements – Fonts
For continuity throughout all PRC ‘Welcome’ design style Rest Stop signage, it is important to maintain a consistency with design, including use of fonts, colours, graphic elements, maps, icons and logos.
The following fonts are used:
PIE CONTEST BTN ROUND
This font is part of the main graphic style for the Welcome Rest Stop branding, and is used for the main ‘Welcome’ message in the top banner.
TREND SANS ONE
This font is used for all main headings for each of the key points of information. This heading style requires the font to appear in all capitals.
AVENIR
This font is used as the main font for all remaining sign content, including text for the body copy, sub-headings, captions, and maps.
Avenir has a variety of weights, from light to black.

Rest Stop Visitor Information Boards:
Design elements – ARtwork
Welcome Rest Stops are scattered across the Pilbara. The new rest stops have been designed from the red earth up to be a unique statement of the Pilbara.
Echoing the round waterholes where the Pilbara’s people have come to shelter for thousands of years, these structures were inspired by the landscape itself.
They also celebrate the rich Indigenous cultures of their location, through original artworks by Pilbara artists, immortalised in the steel canopies.
The designs were developed in creative workshops with local Indigenous artists, each interpreting the concepts of ‘shelter’ and ‘meeting place’. Each distinctive artwork is laser-cut into a steel canopy.
The artists, their designs, and the locations featuring their work are shown here.
To establish as continuity with the Welcome Rest Stop style, these designs are also utilised as graphic elements in the Visitor Information boards.
Elements of these artworks will either be designs laser-cut into steel panels, or as striking graphic elements that form part of the top banner of the sign.
Partial examples of some of the artworks are as shown to the right.

Visitor Information Signage StrategySign classification
Rest Stop Visitor Information Boards:
sign CLASSIFICATION
Rest Stop Visitor Information Boards are designed to fit under two main classification types – Type A and Type B. The general layout of both types of sign are basically the same, with the main points of difference between the two being production and construction techniques and materials used.
TYPE A
Type A signs are generally a less expensive option, with the sign’s steel backing plate covered with a skin containing the printed graphics. These graphics may appear on either one or both sides of the sign.
These signs have a single curve cut out of the left side of the top banner.
The description of a ‘2x1’ or ‘1x1’ sign refers to the ratio of width by height.
TYPE B
Type B signs have a slightly different design, with the addition of a combined curved side panel and top banner panel in laser-cut steel. These steel panels contain the laser-etched designs (see page 4), and is produced to have a rusted appearance. The curve on the side panel compliments the curve to the top banner, appearing as a seemless visual arc from top to side.
The remainder of the main body of the sign (known as the information zone)is of similar construction to the Type A sign, with the sign’s steel backing plate covered with a skin containing the printed graphics. These graphics may appear on either one or both sides of the sign.
The description of a ‘2x1’ or ‘1x1’ sign refers to the ratio of width by height.
TYPE A SIGNS

Visitor Information Signage StrategyGeneral sign layout
Rest Stop Visitor Information Boards:
General sign layout
Rest Stop Visitor Information Boards are designed to be of significant size and therefore attract attention from onlookers and passers-by.
The following examples are to be used as a general guide for direction on the layout of these large signage panels.
Size, scale, legibility and visibility are all important factors that need to be considered when designing each sign.
WORKING TO A GRID
As a general rule, consider the ratio between the width and height of the sign to be constructed. For example, If the ratio is close to 2:1 (as shown with rectangular sign to left), a 6-column grid is suitable to work with.
If the size ratio of the sign is closer to 1:1, then a 3-column grid (as shown below) is more appropriate.
6-column grid layout for large format signs of size ratio approx 2:1

Rest Stop Visitor Information Boards:
General sign layout
Rest Stop Visitor Information Boards are designed as a source of vital information for travellers to a specific area. The aim is to be as clear and succinct as possible, while being easy to follow and visually appealing.
PLANNING THE LAYOUT
It is important that particular points of key information are included on the information boards. On smaller boards, where space is an issue, a summarized version of these key points is advised (rather than reducing the size of the text and therefore reducing legibility).
There are three main zones to each sign.
1. The Introduction Zone
This is the top banner area of the sign. This area includes graphic elements from the branding style, as well as a message which welcoming the visitor to the area they are in. The ‘i’ also features in this zone as a universally identifying symbol for information.
Heading font: Pie Contest BTN Round, Size: approx 340-380pt
2. The Information Zone
This forms the main body of the sign. It includes all key information, including an introductory message, maps, distances to nearby locations, things to see and do in the area, travel advisories and other relevant visitor information. This area also includes in the prominent upper right corner (under the information ‘i’) an identifying symbol and note to visitors regarding the free wi-fi available at this rest stop.
Introduction area: Heading font: Trend Sans One, Size: 200pt Text font: Avenir Medium, Size: 90pt (approx word count: 50)
Main information area: Heading font: Trend Sans One, Size: 90pt Sub-heading font: Avenir Black, Size: 55pt Text font: Avenir Light, Size: 50pt (approx word count: 200-280 words per column of text)
3. The Logo Zone
This area is allocated specifically for sponsor logos, with the Local Government Council (LGC) logo in the lower right, and the sponsor logos in a strip along the base of the sign.
On the following pages are example layout solutions for signs of varying size and shape.

Karijini National Park
Things to See & doOne of Karijini National Park’s big attractions is that its scenery is so accessible: you can literally pull into a car park, walk 50 metres and peer into a 100-metre canyon to see waterfalls and emerald coloured rock pools. The park has a system of excellent walking trails that suit everyone from the beginner to the adventurous. Choose your route and be ready to explore deep into subterranean gorges and through waterfalls where you can swim in the park’s sparkling rock pools. Explore the serpentine tunnels of marbled rock, clamber over boulders and squeeze through narrow tunnels, inch your way along ledges, paddle through hidden waterways and descend deep into chasms which have been eroded into the landscape over two billion years.
NATURAL ATTRACTIONS Enjoy the Karijini’s natural beauty on the many walk trails, scenic lookouts and swimming holes through Hamersley Gorge to the north-west, Weano Gorge, Wittenoom Gorge, Kalamina Gorge, Hancock Gorge and Joffre Falls in the centre, or Dales Gorge to the magnificant Fortescue Falls, Fern Pool and Circular Pool. Visit Oxer Lookout for spectacular views at the junction of four mighty gorges.
ARTS / CULTURE / HERITAGEThe art galleries of Australia’s North West house amazing collections of contemporary and Indigenous art, or take a trip back in time on the heritage trails, historic sites, buildings and museums. Et reribus si ullore prent eostrum consectam quibus pa necatiam hillaborate digniet odipsunt.
INDUSTRIALMine tours – see one of WA’s largest working Iron Ore mines at Rio Tinto’s open cut mine. Ulpa providi gentores endant faciissinum fuga. Untibus velessuntio voluptatiusa voluptio.
Local Indigenous heritageThe traditional owners within this region, the Ngarluma people, extend a welcome in the local language to the visitors of the Pilbara.Archaeological surveys reveal that continuous occupation and ancestry stretches back more than 30,000 years. Important cultural sites, such as the rock art on the Burrup Peninsula near Karratha, show a deep historical and spiritual connection to the land, waterways and sea.

Visitor Information Signage StrategyVisitor Information Centre road verge signs – Design elements
Visitor Information Centre Road Verge Signs:
Design elements
To maintain the consistency with all Visitor Information Centres throughout the Pilbara, a series of road verge signs are proposed to mark the locations of each centre. These signs take a tall and narrow form which is simple and eye-catching. They are designed to follow along with the PRC ‘Welcome’ design style adopted by the Visitor Information boards – albeit in a simplified form.
FontsThe road verge signs are intended to be of similar shape, size and construction. It is also important to maintain a consistency with design, including use of fonts, colours, graphic elements, icons and logos. The following font is used:
TREND SANS ONE
This font is used for all text on the sign (with the exception of the fonts used as part of each Local Government Council logo). It has only one format, and appears in all capitals.
SYMBOLsThe following symbol is used as a marker to easily identify the Visitor Centre:
Information ‘i’ – Universally identified as a source of visitor information.
ArtworkTo establish as continuity with the Welcome Rest Stop style, designs from the artworks developed are utilised as graphic elements in the road verge signs. Elements of these artworks will be laser-cut into steel panels that form part of a decorative panel attached to the side of the sign.
Partial examples of some of the artworks are as shown here. For more examples, see page 4.
ColoursThe following colours are used as the base colour palette. For the signs that are predominantly raw steel, the only colour element is the Information ‘i’. Any other colours used are applicable to the relevant LGC logos.
Sand beige – the background colour to the main body of the sign.
Royal blue – colour for the Information ‘i’.
Charcoal grey – text colour.

Visitor Information Signage StrategySign layout & classification
Visitor Information Centre Road Verge Signs:
sign layout & classification
The Visitor Information Centre road verge signs are designed to attract attention from onlookers and passers-by. The purpose of the signs is to direct tourists and interested public to the location of the Visitor Centre.
The following examples are to be used as a general guide for direction on the layout of these signs.
Size, scale, legibility and visibility are all important factors that need to be considered when designing each sign.
There are two kinds of verge signs:
TYPE A
The pillar option – which is 2100mm tall
TYPE B
The tower option – which is a taller (2400mm) and narrower option.
Each of the options are tall and narrow, which is the most practical format for road-verge signage, due to legibility and suitability for roadside placement.
PLANNING THE LAYOUT
There are five elements that make up the verge sign.
1. Main bodyThis is the core structure of the sign, and determines the height and width. It is made up of two panels (front and back), which are secured into concrete footings.
2. Information ‘i’A circular blue panel with the white information ‘i’. Panel is secured towards the upper corner of the sign, with it partially protruding to mimic the curve made by the laser-cut steel panel.
3. Text areaText stating the name of the Visitor Centre.
4. LGC logo areaArea allocated for the Local Government Council (LGC) logo.
5. Laser-cut steel panelLaser-cut steel panel down side incorporating artwork from PRC Welcome rest stop canopy designs.
On the following pages are example layout solutions for both PILLAR and TOWER sign options.
