On the brink of summer with Christmas holidays not far away, the sweet anticipation of sun, surf and sand is what gets most of us through the manic onslaught at work before we can pack up our toys and escape for a couple of weeks to relax and unwind.

Before we do, however, there are a few things to hold our attention. Kicking off the festive party season, Cup and Show Week events demand we put our best foot forward, so we have rounded up a swag of fashion dos and donts to prepare you for any special occasion the races, your Christmas work do or that long-awaited summer wedding. Beauty tips and tricks are abound from Este Lauders head honcho whos learnt from the best makeup artists over the years, and Urban Skin and Bodys Ginnie Matson gives us a weekly skincare countdown to prepare you for your big event.

This month we give you the heads up on all you need to know when planning and building your dream home, alongside styling advice from the interior experts to make the most of what you do have.

CRISP COLDCOFFEE BREWA new taste of summer is coming to Christchurch thanks to the inventive roasters at Vivace. Combining single origin coffees from Sumatra, Brazil and Kenya, the coffee connoisseurs at Vivace have just released their cold brew coffee. Steeped for around 18 hours, this process extracts the blend's subtle flavours. Served chilled over ice, this refreshing blend sings out with mellow caramel and rich chocolately notes. Pop in to Vivaces flagship caf for your ice-cold coffee brew on Tuam Street today.

PARTY CENTRALThe re-emergence of the beloved Poplar Lane is finally here.

Four bars under the umbrella of Dux Central have brought the restored and re-strengthened former Twisted Hop building to life. Old brickwork

reveals a sliver of Christchurchs history and exposed steel beams point towards a new future. The Brew Bar is dedicated to the beer buff, offering more than 200 global craft beers. Punters can relax indoors or soak up the sun in the

courtyard or up on the roof. Retire in style and up the ante with sophisticated drinks in the Emerald Room or retire next door to The Poplar Social Club,

a refined cocktail lounge for something a little more intimate.

These shoes were made for walking, and November is the month to get outdoors and experience the natural wonders of the Banks Peninsula. Visit www.lyttelton.net.nz for a full programme of guided walks.

Its all happening on the junction of Manchester and St Asaph streets. Not only has True Grit hair salon returned to its roots on Manchester street (see more on their glamorous new salon on page 45), but a sizzling new restaurant, bar, and lounge, Mish Mash, and its sister espresso bar and cafe, Tap N Grind, have both opened next door.

Infused with a healthy dose of edgy street kudos, Mish Mash is just that: a mash up of ingredients for both your taste buds and your eyeballs. Urban grit and vibrant ethnic charm champion with street art murals featuring native New Zealand birds to form the backdrop for the rustic bar and dining booths.

Sample one of their delectable cocktails using the freshest seasonal produce and graze on their tasty edible offerings like the Bourbon Pork Chop served with cornbread and hazelnuts or the Cured Salmon Congee. Begin and end your night at Mish Mash and chill out to the funky lounge music with DJs rocking the house on Friday and Saturday nights.

Early evening in the city and the spring wind kicked up mini dust devils which swirled along the street, chasing the citizens heading to Ballantynes. The red carpet formed a path to refuge from the breeze and in the Contemporary Lounge, the inviting clink of glasses rang in welcome. Relaxing with small talk and richly laden platters, guests readied themselves to flirt with fashions fit for summer. A shiver of excitement wove through the darkened hush, the lights dimmed except on the runway as the show commenced. The legion of elegant models strode the stage to sway the garments before the audience, whose imaginations came alive with dreams of the coming season of stylish dressing.

  • The high noon reflected off Lyttelton Harbour throwing light and heat onto the Port Hills where, commanding the view, the newly completed Cholmondeley building stood in welcome. Having sustained irreparable earthquake damage, the original facility was sacrificed to progress and safety of design, to be replaced by this new edifice. Invited guests took to the cool shade with refreshing drinks to stave off the fury of the hot spring sun. Speeches intoned from the hearts of the speakers with sincere affection for this place served as the prelude for the official act of opening. A blessing and dedication topped the ceremony, making Cholmondely ready to serve the needs of future generations of children in this haven of security and love.

Design & Build SustainablyIt needn't cost any more to build an energy-efficient home. All it takes is careful planning and design for greater comfort and future savings on power bills.

Always shop around to make sure the people you enlist to build your house have the credentials to give you the highest level of quality sustainable solutions. Working with professional architects, designers and builders who understand energy-efficient design principles will guarantee you use the best methods and materials to get the most from your home.

There are numerous ways to cash in on nature's bounty completely free of charge. Harness the sun's warmth and light by positioning your house on the sunniest part of your section and orient it to face north. Position the main living areas, to the north to make the most of the sun's rays and relegate service areas like garages and bathrooms to the southern side of the house.

Make sure you bank the sun's heat by installing good insulation

in ceilings, walls and floors. Knowing which building

materials contain thermal mass properties and how to use them effectively will save on power bills.

Exposed concrete floors will soak up the heat during the day and release it when the temperature drops at night.

Ensure all windows are appropriately sized and positioned by allocating moderately large windows on the north-facing side, smaller ones on the east and west sides, and reserve the smallest-sized windows for the cool southern side of the home. For the greatest

levels of heat retention it pays to invest in double-glazed windows with insulated frames.

When addressing the question of size, bigger is not always

better. Smaller houses are cheaper to build,

easier to heat and use a lot

less energy, so consider building to a size that suits your needs, rather than

    building bigger just

for the sake of it. Interestingly,

a house's shape has a significant bearing on its

energy efficiency too. The more complex a home's

shape, the more floor, wall and ceiling area it can lose heat

through. Compact square shapes and multi-level homes have less external surface area and are therefore easier and cheaper to keep warm.

Considering adequate ventilation in your home's design is the key to keeping your house cool and comfortable throughout the warmer months, and also helps remove moisture and maintain air quality. Ask your architect to design rooms with a layout that enables effective cross-ventilation to help with this.

A handy hint on heating from the energy experts is to live in your new house for a while before installing heating so you can work out how much heating you need. If it's cleverly designed you may be surprised how little heating your new home actually needs. For more information on energy in the home, visit www.energywise.govt.nz.

A bigger home is not always better. Smaller houses are cheaper, easier to heat and use a lot

less energy. There was a buzz of excited anticipation in the air at The Tannery as night fell and an event not to be missed got underway. The Canterbury Fashion Beauty Week Summer Collections and Awards were gracing the victorian mall which had been table lined and decorated to be an arcade of cabaret and couture. The lights dimmed and as in a dream, lithe dancers milled around as limp puppets, brought to life by the ringmaster, in darkly unsettling steampunk robes. Then came the time for the models to make the long walk to fashion glory, each high-heeled step taking them along the tunnel of admiring gazes as palms met in applause. When the last garment withdrew from the field, the atmosphere did not subside, indeed it was the signal for the after-event party to begin and for the remaining segment of night to rock with the sounds of merriment.

When building a new home, planning is key. Think about textures, colours, materials and functionality. Websites like Pinterest are fantastic for creating mood boards, while Houzz.com is one of Frobisher's favourite online resources for design inspiration.

Your interior is a reflection of you. It's your opportunity to add unique touches that mirror who you are. By injecting your personality into the build you will turn a simple house into a home you will enjoy.

Think about your lifestyle and what is important to you and your family in terms of functionality and features. It can be difficult to know where to begin so choose a feature piece of furniture like a bespoke cabinet, mirror, statement light, artwork, rug, wallpaper or curtain fabric. From that initial piece the rest will flow.

Its not about everything matching, but creating interest with contrasts: a leather chair with gold metal legs; a classic raw

linen lounge suite introducing pops of colour with cushions lemongrass is on trend for summer and the possibilities are endless with literally thousands of fabrics from which to choose.

Bring the outdoors in with florals and botanic prints, or make a striking statement with bold geometrics.

Monochromatic black and white is a timeless colour combination or add a touch of luxe with metallic prints on fabric, lamps and shades or an accent piece such as the iconic starburst mirror.

No matter how big or small your build is, take time to plan, budget and enjoy designing your dream home. Have fun and be bold with your choices.

Building a new home is an opportunity to turn your dreams into reality.

The Marcato family have been proudly making theirs for over 75 years and today the family is still very much hands on. The quality and level of engineering is something they are justifiably proud of.

This year they have extended their range with the introduction of the Marcato Design Series, top of the line machines in striking colours as well as drying racks, ravioli tablets and so on...

    Building on a Budget

Building your own home is one of the biggest investments of a lifetimeand with a few clever tips we show you how to make the most of what you can afford.

get smart with your money to achieve your dream home without compromising on whats really important. Consider buying a large plot of land with friends or family which you can split into smaller lots. Many great locations tend to cover more ground, so get the stunning harbour view you dream of by sharing the cost with someone you dont mind having as a neighbour.

opting for low-maintenance building materials, like vinyl siding and metal roofing saves in the long run. although they may be more expensive to install you will save money on future repairs, replacement or repainting.

using salvaged and recycled materials and componentry from the abundance of demolition sites around the city not only adds valuable character to new builds, but can save money, too.

For the safety and security of your home, dont skimp on structural elements, doors and windows. Buy the very best you can afford and, together with your architect or builder, determine other areas you could save on to allow for a few luxuries.

its important not to waste valuable cash on overbuilding. look carefully at the existing properties in the area and be aware that building a home that is bigger and better than those of your neighbours will not necessarily equate to a fair price if and when it's time to sell. instead, the value of your build will be determined by the lower-priced homes around it.

The experience of a well-qualified contractor is an invaluable asset in any building project. not only will you have recourse should anything go wrong, but their experience in

the industry means they will have established relationships with suppliers and subcontractors, whom they trust to deliver the best workmanship possible.

Keep a close eye on construction allowances as your home is being built to ensure you are getting what you asked for and what you paid for. if you had initially agreed on using a specific brand, for example, then dont settle for less, unless you discuss a cost adjustment with your builder or contractor.

Many a building project has snowballed out of control in the financial department due to changes being made to the design and materials once building is already underway.

deciding exactly what you want and then sticking with it will ensure you stay on budget, within your expected time frame, and all with minimal stress.

From the ground upSolid planning and preparation are vital to the success of any building project. The Certified Builders Association's Canterbury president, pat Coughlan, offers some insider knowledge to simplify the lengthy and complicated process.

Before starting any building project, kick start the process by gathering all the necessary material and information you need to decide on styles, materials and services you would like and create a check list of basic requirements.

this is one of the fun parts of the process, so enjoy scouring through interior design and architecture magazines, browsing online resources for information on products (www.selector.co.nz is a great online directory for the latest products and building materials) and perusing the abundance of online design blogs to inspire and educate yourself on different styles, applications, layouts and construction methods available.

Visit show homes and expos for ideas, watch lifestyle and building programmes like Grand Designs to explore creative solutions other

people are using and familiarise yourself with average costings of building supplies.

Knowing how much you can afford will dictate any decisions you can make on products and services, so work this out at the beginning of the planning process to avoid costly mistakes and to manage your expectations from the outset.

There are many financing options available, so make an appointment with your bank or mortgage broker who will give you a realistic idea of what you can afford. It pays to shop around because interest rates can vary greatly. It's imperative to read the fine print and obtain expert legal advice before signing any finance deals.

once you know how much money you have to work with, ensure you prioritise your wants

versus needs. For more on getting the most bang for your buck, turn to page 20.

Selecting a builder early on in the process is advised. It is one of the most important decisions you will make. If you're using an architect, they can manage the process for you, but ultimately who you employ to do the work is your decision.

Get advice from a Certified Builder when making critical decisions like choosing a section, architectural style, plans and building materials, it will save you headaches down the track.

Before making any decisions, make sure you do your research. Ask around friends, family and colleagues who have been through the process themselves, listen to what prospective builders have to say about how they work, and lastly, listen to your gut.

    Style | home 25

remember the cheapest is not always your best bet, and trust between you and your builder is vital when your greatest lifetime investment is at stake.

Keep your options open and approach a few builders, even if you have a preferred builder in mind. When getting quotes from each builder, let them know this is what you're doing. this transparent approach will make for honest, open communication, which is an essential ingredient for a successful working relationship with your chosen builder and will also help keep prices competitive.

Once your finances are in order, plans drawn up and your builder on board, the next step is the contract. Know what options are available to you and what you are signing. A full contract is the most common form of contract. A full contract means the builder is responsible for the whole project from start to finish, and is recommended for most situations.

A labour-only contract gives you complete control over the whole project, including the paperwork, subcontractors, materials and the builder. Unless you are familiar

with the building industry and are prepared to make the building project your full-time job, it pays to think twice about taking on this responsibility.

A managed labour contract is where the builder manages the day-to-day running of the project, but you are responsible for purchasing the materials and choosing subcontractors and so forth. With this option, both parties must be clear on their roles and responsibilities. take the time to read the contract carefully and ask for independent advice on any aspect you don't thoroughly understand.

manage your expectations with regular communication between yourself and other parties, and be accepting of delays due to things outside your control, like weather and waiting on various suppliers that can affect timelines.

more often than not, owners will want to make various changes to the original plans during the building process, so make sure you discuss any changes you'd like with your builder to ascertain if they are in fact possible and how it will affect your budget.

If not knowing where to find what you need amidst the jumble of extension cables, gardening tools, sporting equipment and junk in your shed is driving you crazy, we have a few solutions that will create calm from the chaos.

Sheds and garages are one part of our homes we tend to forget about. Before we know it, they become a red-zoned area that we avoid like the plague, until summer arrives and we find ourselves spending longer than wed like looking for gardening tools, the picnic basket or pool supplies.

Get a head start on summer and set one day aside at the weekend to get your garage or gardening shed organised. Choose a fine day and begin by removing everything from your garage. As you take things out you will begin to unearth all those long forgotten items and begin to sort them into separate piles. Grouping like with like, decide what you want to keep, what should be thrown away and what needs to be repaired or replaced. Take stock of leftover materials from past home

DIY projects and sell or donate anything to charity that you are not likely to use again.

Once youve completed sorting everything into manageable piles give the inside of the garage a good sweep and clean out all the drawers, sorting things as you did before, into separate piles.

Now you can see all that you have laid neatly on the driveway or lawn, its time to ascertain the most suitable way to store the contents.

Domestic goddess Martha Stewarts hot tip for keeping garages clutter free is utilising valuable wall space by installing a wall-mounted track system. Choose a horizontal channel that screws to the wall and is fitted with accessories like hooks and shelves to hang and store tools. A cheap alternative for wall-hung

storage for the DIY enthusiast is a simple pegboard from which you can hang hooks and wire baskets.

Make the most of the space above your car by installing ceiling racks to hold sports equipment, outdoor furniture, and other seasonal items like outdoor Christmas decorations you only use once or twice a year. This frees up more room to keep the items you use on a regular basis close at hand.

If you dont have the luxury of a permanent bench space, consider installing a table that can be hung on the wall when not in use and folded down when needed.

This is a great space-saving solution and will give you enough space for repotting plants and making repairs.

Bins and storage containers are most convenient when they can be stacked and put together in one area. Label drawers or storage containers with their contents to make locating items easy.
