Wide variety of possibilities for study

There is a wide variety of content in the courses. The

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science faculty

offers degree courses in automation and mechatronics,

electrical power systems, electrical energy technology

(combined with vocational training), computer sciences

as well as information and communication manage-

ment. Next-generation laboratory equipment and our

employees’ end-to-end experience in teaching and

research guarantee optimum conditions for learning.

Electrical engineering and computer sciences have been taught at Zittau and Görlitz for around half a century. Both

subjects are key for Germany’s economic success and well-being. The faculty’s research is highly successful and has

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

In addition to the undergraduate degree courses in energy and environmental technology and engineering, students

can also enrol for masters courses in mechanical and energy engineering as well as mechanical engineering and energy

systems. Training is practice-oriented and culminates in an engineering degree (Diplomingenieur FH) or Bachelor of

Engineering.

Studying for practical work

Our professors engage in active research, and give

the students the scientific tools they need to get

their careers off to a successful start. In addition to

the key items for didactic university education, our

students receive solid training in the fundamentals

of mathematics and physics, and a large number of

practical training sessions in the lab and a semes-

ter as an intern give them an excellent insight into

everyday working life and its challenges. A further

key element is the use of state-of-the-art computer

technology. The result of our practice-related de-

gree course: Many companies - including interna-

tional companies - already try to attract the atten-

tion of our up-and-coming engineers during their

studies.

Mastering new challenges

The close links between traditional natural sciences and modern life sciences

are becoming increasingly relevant, as these links offer direct contact with

current problematic areas and challenges. State-of-the-art laboratory equip-

ment, an optimum support ratio and our highly committed employees mean

In addition, our faculty is also responsible for environmental management at

the university. We were the first higher education establishment to success-

fully implement the strict European EMAS standard 15 years ago.

NATURAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES

The faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences, with its life sciences, has a unique profile for

both teaching and research. The bachelor’s courses offered include chemistry, molecular bio-

technology as well as ecology and environmental protection. In addition, it also offers master’s

courses in chemistry and energy, biotechnology and applied ecology (together with the Tech-

nical University of Dresden), integrated management and integrated management systems.

We also offer training in mathematics and physics.

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION AND ENGINEERINGWe o�er our students business administration degrees as well as inter-disciplinary degrees in business administration and en-

gineering as well as housing and real estate administration through to a master’s course in international management. They

can thus enjoy the benefits of a wide variety of latest-generation, application-oriented degree courses. The content is clearly

geared to the current requirements for both business and also the labour market. Our close alliances with numerous regional

and pan-regional partners - including companies, administrative authorities and other institutions - as well as our simulations

(for example business plans) that go hand-in-hand with our degree courses make sure that our courses have direct practical

relevance.

We have close alliances with various cultural, medical

and tourism institutions as well as universities in other

European countries. These form the foundations for our

faculty’s excellent reputation. All of our degree courses

have a modular structure, meet the Bologna require-

ments and end with a degree being issued. End-to-end

tutoring programs and progress evaluations, guaran-

Our university is located close to Germany’s border with Poland and the

Czech Republic, which means that intercultural dialog is part of our every-

Our seven different bachelor’s and master’s degree courses focus on practice-related

and well-founded fundamental training with a large number of different speciali-

sations. The individual, modular degree courses, such as healthcare management,

culture and management, tourism management, specialist translation (economics)

german/polish and also business, economics and languages are closely interlinked

and meet all of the European directives and requirements.

The wide variety of degree courses offered by our faculty of Social Sciences cover all phases of human life - from child-

hood through to old age. We offer degrees in social work, inclusion studies, childhood education and communication

psychology. In addition, we also offer master’s courses in management of Social Change and Social Gerontology.

you to simultaneously obtain an internationally recognised

university qualification (degree: five years or bachelor: four

years) and an integrated professional apprenticeship in a

tion, we have strategic alliances with a large number of international companies. Zittau/

Görlitz University of Applied Sciences is a partner in the international “Neisse University”

PARTNERSHIPS & STRATEGIC ALLIANCES

INNOVATION FOR THE FUTUREOur university is a future-oriented place of study, focusing

on “Energy and the environment”, “Transformation pro-

cesses in business and society”, and also “Materials - struc-

tures - surfaces”. Current research projects deal with social-

ly and technically relevant issues, such as technical energy

processes, energy supply, environmental technology and

saving resources using innovative and future-oriented ap-

proaches. In addition, we shed light on the consequences

that demographic growth has on society.

STRONG STRATEGIC ALLIANCES We have close contacts with companies in Germany

and abroad, including ABB, Areva, Siemens and Vatten-

fall, and also well-known research institutes such as the

Helmholtz centres and the Fraunhofer Institutes, and also

to with many regional companies, state and city admin-

istrations, science and technology centres. Around six to

seven million euros of third-party funds are invested in

research every year.

SUCCESSFUL TOGETHER The Centre for Science and Technology Transfer is di-

rectly allocated to the rector’s office, and is run by the

pro-rectors for “Education and International Affairs” and

“Research”. Connectors are available as contact persons.

This aims to assist strategic alliances between the univer-

sity and companies or business players and to promote

project-related networks.

The data-base supported IT system at HSZG offers inter-

ested parties information on the university’s research and

transfer activities. In the research information system, the

term “Research” means both project-related scientific ac-

tivities and also developmental, service and other transfer

activities. The partnership with companies and institutions

is reflected in the students’ papers, such as diploma and

master’s theses. Our transfer map offers an overview of the

successful cooperation.

STUDYING WITHOUT AN UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE QUALIFICATION You can also study at our university without an university

entrance qualification. We offer you the opportunity to

take an admission exam to become entitled to study.

CHILDREN’S ACADEMY Scientists from various disciplines give children between

the ages of 8 and 12 exciting insights into the worlds of

science and research in our Children’s Academy.

SENIOR CITIZENS’ COLLEGE Scientific lectures, discussion groups, seminars and excursions

are all held as part of the senior citizen’s college. This is specifi-

cally aimed at better agers and is offered at both locations.

A REAL HOT TIP: THE ZITTAU REGION

You can expect to find a whole lot of conviviality and an

almost Mediterranean flair in the historical centre of this

idyllic small town, with numerous street cafés, boutiques

and shops. Many students use the proximity to Poland

and the Czech Republic in their leisure time to take a short

trip abroad. Sports, shopping, dining out or nightlife: The

opportunities are boundless. Germany’s most south-east-

ern town is a real pearl, and is attracting and delighting

increasing numbers of visitors.

Zittau is also interesting in practical terms - it has a low

cost of living and a lot of open space. It offers a lifestyle

that isn’t governed by financial worries, and offers space

to develop your creative or sporting abilities. You can

always find something to do as soon as you leave your

home in Zittau: The Zittauer Gebirge Natural Park offers a

host of outdoor activities. The close-by Olbersdorfer See

Cross triathlon, climbing, hiking or just a beach volleyball

match and hanging out at the lake - you’re in just the right

place in Zittau if you’re looking to get away from big city

life. The town is located on Germany’s border with both

Poland and the Czech Republic, and has an excellent in-

frastructure with direct traffic connections to the cities of

Prague, Wroclaw and Dresden.

MORE THAN JUST A PRETTY FACE

Many people believe that Görlitz is one of Germany’s most

beautiful towns. It is characterised by a unique architec-

tural variety and Europe’s best preserved townscape with

around 4,000 lovingly restored listed buildings.

The new European lifestyle culture dominates the city of

Görlitz in a particularly charming way. The Polish part of

Görlitz, the city of Zgorzelec lies just a few paces behind

the bridge in the old town. You can hardly feel any differ-

ence between the two countries while strolling along the

banks of the river Neiße, which forms the border between

them. You can also sense the international atmosphere at

the Bertzdorfer See, close to Görlitz. This is one of the larg-

est lakes in the Free State of Saxony and its fine sand makes

it a much loved destination for excursions and a hot-spot

for water sports fans.

Görlitz also has a strong musical culture thanks to its stu-

dents. Students or former students organise many cultur-

al events. Students, lecturers and employees meet on the

campus in Görlitz - be this at lunch, relaxing on the banks

of the Neiße river, or at joint events. Companies also love

this location, and many are located around the campus.

Insiders call Görlitz the “Silicon Valley of the East”, because

Görlitz has many names! Since the filming work on the Oscar-nominated film Grand Budapest Hotel, the town has been

known throughout Germany as Görliwood. The city is a much loved film location for international film productions thanks
