Plants cells are similar to animal cells: they have a nucleus, cytoplasm

and a cell membrane. However, in plants th cell wall is rigid. They also

have chloroplasts that carry out photosynthesis.

Mammals are viviparous. Fish, reptiles, birds and amphibians are

oviparous. Mammals, reptiles, birds and some amphibians breathe

through lungs. Fish and some amphibians breathe through gills.

Animals carry out nutrition and

reproduction in different ways.

Animals feed on other living things.

They can be carnivores, herbivores

or omnivores.

Carnivores are animals that eat

other animals. Animals that hunt are

calles predators. Animals that eat

the remains of other animals are

scavengers. Insectivores eat insects and piscivores eat fish.

Page 9: Study presentation Living things€¦ · Animal nutrition and reproduction Animals carry out nutrition and reproduction in different ways. Animals feed on other living things. They

Animal nutrition and reproduction

Herbivores are animals that eat

plants. Plants contain less energy

than meat, so herbivores spend

more time eating to get the

energy they need.

Frugivores are animals that eat

only raw fruits and nuts or

seeds.

Page 10: Study presentation Living things€¦ · Animal nutrition and reproduction Animals carry out nutrition and reproduction in different ways. Animals feed on other living things. They

Omnivores are animals that eat both other animals, insects or

eggs and plants. Many animals are primarily carnivores or

herbivores but sometimes they have to eat other types of food.

RootsThey absorb water and

minerals, and anchor the plant to the ground.

StemIt is the organ whichtransports water and

minerals.

LeavesOrgans that convert

water and mineralsinto food.

FlowersThey are the plant’sreproductive organs.

FruitIt protects the seedsas they develop.

BudsThey are the beginningof new flowers.

Page 13: Study presentation Living things€¦ · Animal nutrition and reproduction Animals carry out nutrition and reproduction in different ways. Animals feed on other living things. They

Plant nutrition and reproductionPlants carry out nutrition by

photosynthesis.

This process has different steps:

1. Plants absorb water and nutrients

from the soil. This forms a substance

called raw sap.

2. The raw sap travels through the stem

to the leaves of the plant.

3. The leaves absorb light energy from the Sun and carbon dioxide

from the air. They use it to convert raw sap into elaborated sap.

4. The elaborated sap travels to the rest of the plant.

Page 14: Study presentation Living things€¦ · Animal nutrition and reproduction Animals carry out nutrition and reproduction in different ways. Animals feed on other living things. They

Plant nutrition and reproductionPlants reproduce by using seeds or

spores.

In angiosperms, the flower contains the male and

female reproductive organs of the plant. The pistil is

the female reproductive organ and the stamen the

male reproductive organ. Pollen from the stamen is transported to the pistil of another flower

by the wind or by an insect that feed on the nectar in the flower.

Gymnosperms produce cones that contain seeds.

Nutrición y reproducción animalLos animales llevan a cabo la nutrición

y reproducción de diversas maneras.

Los animales se alimentan de otros

seres vivos. Pueden ser carnívoros,

herbívoros u omnívoros.

Los carnívoros son animales que se

comen otros animales. Los animales

que cazan son depredadores. Los

animales que se comen los restos de

otros animales son carroñeros.Los insectívoros comen insectos y los piscívoros comen peces.

Page 23: Study presentation Living things€¦ · Animal nutrition and reproduction Animals carry out nutrition and reproduction in different ways. Animals feed on other living things. They

Nutrición y reproducción animal

Los herbívoros son animales que

comen plantas. Las plantas

tienen menos energía que la

carne, por eso los herbívoros

pasan más tiempo comiendo para

obtener la energía necesaria.

Los frugívoros son animales que

comen frutas crudas, nueces y

semillas.

Page 24: Study presentation Living things€¦ · Animal nutrition and reproduction Animals carry out nutrition and reproduction in different ways. Animals feed on other living things. They

1. Las plantas absorben agua y

nutrientes del suelo. Esto forma una

sustancia llamada savia bruta.

Page 28: Study presentation Living things€¦ · Animal nutrition and reproduction Animals carry out nutrition and reproduction in different ways. Animals feed on other living things. They
