You have a passion for social and/or environmental issues. You know that for a better future, ‘business as usual’ will not do. We need tomorrow’s businesses to succeed by creating social impact in concert with meeting shareholder expectations.

You want to build a career by combining the need to achieve social change with your well-developed business skills. You can see a role in helping businesses do good, survive, and thrive as they transition to new models of sustainability, and positive social and environmental impact. You can imagine providing social and ethical lenses on strategy, investment, and operations and want to help achieve social change while maintaining an entrepreneurial edge.

The UNSW Master of Commerce specialisation in Global Sustainability and Social Enterprise is designed for students who are passionate about improving lives, communities, and the environment. It gives students business knowledge, tools, and techniques to work towards global change through a career in industry or government, not-for-profits, or by creating change at the local level through starting or scaling sustainable social enterprises.

Build your professional skills in leadership, design, critical and creative thinking, and communication, including a great project pitch, so that you can influence key decision-makers, build networks and make ideas a reality. Develop an awareness of change processes and an understanding of ethics, environmental impact and human rights to lead sustainable change, locally and globally.

Studying COMM5201 Social enterprise: Doing Business for social good you will explore the challenges, constraints and opportunities that social enterprises face in pursuing their organisational mission (both social/environmental and financial). You will then draw upon this learning to demonstrate how a social enterprise should be designed, launched and scaled by developing a business case as part of the national Big Idea competition.

In COMM5202 Social and Environmental Sustainability you will examine social and environmental sustainability from a business perspective to create long-term economic value while building healthy ecosystems and strong communities.

In COMM5203 Social and Environmental Outcomes Measurement you will learn about measuring not only the financial aspect of a company but also its outcomes and social impact. Through working on a real case study you will gain the tools and knowledge needed to do a complete impact assessment map. This capability is becoming an increasingly important skill for those working in or with social sector organisations.

COMM5204 Investing for local and Global Impact provides the opportunity to learn about social impact investing, one of the fastest growing areas of investment world-wide with an increasing demand by industry for graduates with expertise in this area. Assessments are based on real client briefs enhancing the practical and applied nature of the course.

In COMM5205 Leading Change for Sustainability you will discover how to develop your leadership practice to reflect the values and systems of social change. This course equips students with the skills for leading positive social change, which include leadership, mindfulness and creativity so that they can influence decision-making. It uses in-depth case studies to examine complex aspects of sustainability leadership faced by leaders from business, government and civil society.

CAPSTONE: COMM5030 Social Entrepreneurship Practicum is a project-based course that requires students to work directly on social entrepreneurship projects sourced from clients from social sector organisations. ABOUT OUR STUDENTS

CONTACT US“Education is and will be the most powerful tool for individual and social change, and we must do all that it takes to facilitate it.”

SHIV NADAR

Febe is an international student from Indonesia who is currently studying the UNSW Master of Commerce specialisation in Global Sustainability and Social Enterprise taught by the Centre for Social Impact.

“The course has helped me apply systemic thinking in approaching and addressing complex problems. It prevents me from taking any ‘silver bullet’ solution that seems to be effective but apparently it only cures the symptoms and not the root cause of the problem, hence is not sustainable. It also assists me in mapping relevant stakeholders whom I need to collaborate with to ensure and maximise the delivery of intended impacts.”
