Learning Account
16
Learning Account
17
• The legislation on the financing of higher education in
Flanders grants every student a “learning account” of 140
credits
• As long as you have enough L.A., you can continue studying.
• How does it work ?
• At the beginning of the year, the number of credits you
have registered for, is subtracted from your learning
account
• You earn back the credits you obtain• E.g. 140 credits - registered credits + successful credits = Personal Learning Account

Levels of achievement
21
When graduating as a bachelor or master, you will be
awarded a level of achievement.
• Cum fructu: a weighted percentage of less than 68% but at
least 50%.
• Cum laude: a weighted percentage of at least 68%.
• Magna cum laude: a weighted percentage of at least 77%.
• Summa cum laude: a weighted percentage of at
least 85%.
• Summa cum laude with the congratulations of the
examination committee : a weighted percentage of at
least 90%.
Cumulative Study Efficiency
22
Cumulative Study Efficiency
number of credits acquired (score doesn’t matter as long as it is 10 or more / 20)
= _______________________________________________
number of credits taken in ISP (= your study programme)
calculated over all preceding years
• E.g. Results End AY 1: 60 successful credits / 60 credits ISP => SE 100%
Results End AY 2: 57 successful credits / 60 credits ISP => SE 95%
CSE = (60+57)/(60+60) = 98% CSE
Cumulative Study Efficiency

Cumulative Study Efficiency

Cumulative Study Efficiency :Study Progress and refusals
• For students who didn’t obtain 60 successful credits yet (=
“starting student”) by the
• End of Year 1:
CSE < 30% no access to the same programme
for 1 year!
30%=< CSE < 50% access possible + binding conditions
• End of Year 2:
CSE < 50% no access to all KUL programmes
for 1 year!
Cumulative Study Efficiency
• E.g. Results AY End 1: 18 cr aqcuired / 60 cr taken SE 30%
Results AY End 2: 30 cr acquired / 60 cr taken SE 50%
CSE = (18+30)/(60+60) = 40% CSE => refusal of 1 year
• E.g. Results AY End 1: 18 cr acquired / 60 cr taken SE 30%
Results AY End 2: 42 cr acquired / 60 cr taken SE 70% !!
CSE = (18+42)/(60+60) = 50% CSE => No refusal

29
Exam result
• 10 or more / 20 = passing the course = successful credit
• 2 chances to pass a course
• E.g. fail course in January (EP1) 2nd chance in Aug./Sept. (EP3)
fail course in June (EP2)2nd chance in Aug./Sept. (EP3)
• Within the same academic year, a student keeps the best mark
E.g. Philosophy
June: 9/20
August: 6/20
=> End result: 9/20
Exam result : tolerance
• 10/20 or more : successful credits
• 8/20 or 9/20: choice
• Retake (2nd exam chance) OR take it next academic year
OR
• Tolerate (optional)
• Only for 8/20 or 9/20 and if cumulative study efficiency ≥
50%
• For 18 credits in bachelor (in case of exemptions less).
• 1st year : up to a maximum of 12 tolerance points
• MBA : no tolerances
• ≤ 7/20: retake
Tolerance
32
How many times can I register for a course ?
Refusals
• 2nd time in your year programme ?: YES (unless SE < 30%)
• 3rd time in your year programme:
* CSE ≥ 50%: YES
* CSE < 50%: NO
No access to KUL programmes of which the
course is part - for 1 year!
• 4th time in your year program: NO
No access to KUL programmes of which the course
is part - for 3 years!
! The registration in your ISP counts,
not the fact if you take the exam or not !
How to prevent refusals ?
• Refusals on the basis of overall CSE
• No 30% CSE
• No 50% CSE after two years
• Refusals on the basis of too many course registrations
• Never a fourth registration
• Only a third registration if CSE >= 50%
