The Smart

Broadcast Solution

Studer DigiMedia

The Smart Broadcast SolutionToday’s radio stations are heavily reliant on automation sys-tems to handle virtually all aspects of daily broadcasting operations.

Systems that are directly or indirectly involved with pro-gramme production and playout are moving beyond the broadcasting studio and making inroads into editorial offices, music programming, advertising departments and even the executive suite.

Present-day systems have become much more PC and server-based, with exacting availability and stability requirements, yet they must be easy to operate and maintain. Integra-tion of new communication and information systems in broadcast studio settings can be complex, and this in turn requires highly flexible, scalable and accommodat-ing broadcast systems.

For decades, Studer has been one of the world’s lead-ing broadcast studio equipment suppliers. The company’s DigiMedia broadcast system is a full-featured production and playout system that is proving popular with radio stations all over the world – not least because DigiMe-dia was developed and is being continually enhanced by broadcasters, for broadcasters. Globally, 150-plus radio sta-tions with over 1500 workstations between them already rely on Studer DigiMedia.

A powerful database lies at the heart of a high-performance broadcast system. DigiMedia is available either with a proprietary, very lean database or in a SQL version that opens the full range of possibilities afforded by standard databases.

Database

The database’s central task is to manage the full repertoire of media formats (images, sound, text) used by the DigiMe-dia broadcast system. The open structure makes light work of data importing and exporting – an important consid-eration when integrating specialised third-party products like music and advertising scheduling software.

The DigiMedia SQL version allows users to benefit from all the facilities of a professional database, like rapid and flexible record searches using a wide range of search criteria.

The on air application is among the most important components of a broadcast system. It is the radio presenter’s daily working tool, and bears a direct influence on the quality of work. DigiMedia provides a full suite of the tools expected of a modern on air system.

OnAir

In addition to regular live-assist, DigiMedia also permits automated operation that is capable, for example, of run-ning a programme with presenter, news feed and external source input automatically.

The SplitController gives DigiMedia fully automated con-trol over regionalised programming.

Full outside control over the on air application, via a data link or GSM, is another standard feature

Fully automated broadcast operation is an important com-mercial consideration in broadcasting.

DigiMedia allows comprehensive playout automation. Fre-quent applications include night time programmes involv-ing a presenter and music-heavy programme sections outside of prime time.

It is quite simple to realise complete programmes includ-ing presenters, news bulletins, playback from a variety of audio media (CD, MD, tape, etc.), patching-in external lines via a routing matrix, telephone hybrid and/or codecs – all fully automated, with no studio personnel present.

Key features

• Automation and live-assist modes• Jingle and NewsPlayer• Instant remote operation with identical on air

user interface• Multi-programme operation• Central and distributed regionalisation operation• Mixing desk integration via serial connections to

Studer OnAir-series consoles

Automation Live Assist

DigiMedia can replace conventional studio playback equip-ment, making it the ideal DJ tool in live assist mode. Any-thing that used to be sourced off CD, MD, DAT, etc. can be cued up fast and conveniently with a mouse, touch-screen or keyboard, ready for fader-start playback.

Comprehensive pre-listening, also with direct database access and availability of additional functions like RDS or routing matrixes, are all standard.

Jingle Player - News Player

The news/jingle player allows convenient cueing and play-out of news or jingle elements, independently of the OnAir screen.

Modules• DigiMedia SE • DigiMedia PE• DigiMedia EE• DigiMedia JinglePlayer • DigiMedia BackUp• DigiMedia Remote• DigiMedia SplitController• DigiMedia SplitImport

Multi Programme – SplitFeed

DigiMedia is capable of playing out multiple playlists simultaneously. This can be used for broadcasting indi-vidual programme segments, or entire programmes on different stations.

Remote

Radio is growing less studio-bound and more out and about – the closer it can get to listeners, the better. Digi-Media allows full remote control of the OnAir application via a network, modem link or GSM. A special transmis-sion protocol means that everything happens in real time

and securely, thanks to password protection.

The remote application is a one-to-one match with the studio OnAir screen and may be installed on a laptop, for example. A chat window allows easy exchange of text mes-sages between the remote station and the OnAir station.

Mixing desk integration

The DigiMedia system can control all Studer OnAir-series digital mixing desks via a serial interface. This allows a wide range of programmable control possibilities like automatic execution of predefined fades, channel mute/unmute, etc.

Database Client – CD transfer

Every database client connection (database system access) includes a CD transfer option that allows audio content to be transferred to the audio server as MPEG files via a PC workstation. CD title/album data is automatically inserted into the database after the download.

MultimediaToday’s radio and television are digital

multi-media, correspondingly integrated with multimedia systems. The internet is

just as important in this respect as services like RDS, SMS and DAB.

Modules

• DigiMedia InternetPublisherPro• DigiMedia DynamicRDS• DigiMedia OnAir-Gateway• DigiMedia IP-Server

Key features

• Web publishing• Web radio• Audio-on-demand• Dynamic RDS• SMS delivery• DAB

The DigiMedia broadcast system communicates with the networked “outside world” via IP servers and OnAir gateways.

This makes it possible to send continuously updated data-base content dynamically to web sites, RDS, DAB and mobile telephone displays with relatively little effort.

Everything happens automatically, without any need for explicit operator action.

The broadcast system database thus becomes a multime-dia information supply point for modern radio and tele-vision broadcast companies.

OnAir gateway

The DigiMedia broadcast system’s OnAir gateway is a powerful tool for external network connectivity. It per-mits secure data interchange with the DigiMedia database and provides the interface for the following multimedia functionality:

IP server

The DigiMedia IP server software module facilitates extend-ing DigiMedia networks via TCP/IP links, e.g. via the inter-net. This can be extremely useful for networking various radio stations, or linking satellite studios with broad-cast headquarters.

Web publishing

The DigiMedia InternetPublisher software module gives web publishers a suite of tools for dynamic preparation of database content on a web site.

The DigiMedia InternetPublisherPro software developer kit goes even further, offering web-radio functionality and audio-on-demand.

Audio-On-Demand

With this feature, Web site visitors can search for spe-cific music titles and audio segments, and listen in real-time via Windows Media Player.

Triggers initiate web publishing of specific audio offerings like news bulletins, topical items or pop charts.

RDS/RadioText

DigiMedia exploits RadioText, one of many RDS (Radio Data System) features, to transmit ancillary programme infor-mation from the DigiMedia database. For example, this facilitates title/artist information display on RDS-equipped radio receivers.

A separate scheduler can generate a weekly plan for RadioText information to be sent in parallel with audio programming.

SMS delivery

The OnAir gateway can be used to make dynamic database content available to an SMS provider. The primary applica-tion here is to display title/artist details of the music cur-rently being broadcast on mobile telephones via SMS.

DAB

With DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting), comprehensive text and image information can accompany a broadcast programme. The DigiMedia broadcast system delivers the necessary dynamic data via the OnAir gateway.
