Students visitBBC London
Students from years 11, 12 and
13 had a tour of the BBC,
where they witnessed the TOTP
Christmas Special being filmed.
Students gained a sneak peak
of the celebrity dressing rooms,
engaged in activities such as
‘Creating their own news
programme and game show’ as
well as using the green screen
technology and being weather
presenters.
Students were then lucky
enough to receive a talk from
the Head of Children’s TV, Joe
Godwin. Students watched a
programme being filmed and
saw the phenomenon that is
the Blue Peter Garden!

During the Autumn term
Dr Jonathan Chippindall has
been working with students and
staff in the science department
at Oasis Academy MediaCityUK.
He is an Ogden Fellow; a
science expert placed in schools
to encourage students to follow
their passion for science into
further and higher education.
Jonathan’s background is in
aerospace engineering. He
studied for a Bachelor’s degree at
the University of Manchester
before working with BAE Systems
to obtain his PhD. Jonathan
worked as part of a team of
researchers developing planes
capable of flying without any
external moving parts, which
means that they can be very
stealthy. The technology he
contributed towards is used on
some of the super-modern,
unmanned, spy planes flying
today.
Jonathan worked with our Year
12 and 13 Physics students to
help them succeed in their AS
and A2 levels and ran a very
successful rocket building
workshop with pupils from a
visiting primary school. He has
also left a legacy of his placement
by building us a fantastic wind
tunnel and a Ruben’s tube. This
spectacular piece of equipment
allows students to study sound
waves using an array of fire!

Year 10 students during the last Super Learning Day 1/12/10went to Ski Rossendale to try out skiing, snowboarding andtubing on the dry ski slope – but even though it wassupposed to be an artificial slope the snow came down hardand it was like skiing on the Alps!
When is a dry ski slopenot a dry ski slope?
‘Not ForBoys’
A group of Academy girls took part in a
programme called ‘Not For Boys’. This
involved them designing their own street
dance to a choice of music.
They had to work on this dance each week for
12 weeks (they did put extra work in byattending lunchtimes). They also got the
chance to design their own costumes as well.
They performed the dance in a competition
against other Salford schools from the city in
front of 120 people (family and friends) and 3
judges. They performed well and came overall
third with Shelby Wilde being picked for the
most improved dancer. Well done girls!

Youth club is a fun social place
for students to come and havefun - they can enjoy their time
by listening to music, playingon the Wii and even playingtable tennis. It’s a good
chance to get out of the houseand see your friends. You can
cook cakes and cookies, have drinks and even have food
provided. You will never be
stuck in the house again!
If youth club doesn’t sound fun
to you, give it a go and you will
soon change your mind!
