CITIZENSHIP AWARD Week 4 – Lucas Sandry Lucas was chosen as the Week 4 Citizenship Award winner by Mrs Lewis. Lucas is in Year 2 and is an honest and trustworthy citizen. Lucas found money in our playground last week and immediately handed it in to a teacher. Well done Lucas!

Red Shield Appeal Congratulations to the Student Council on a fantastic Red Shield Day last Thursday. Thank you to all the families who provided delicious treats for the Student

Council to sell during recess and to all students for their donations of gold coins! A total of $145.00 was raised and was presented to Captain Kathryn Nicholson from the Salvation Army. Well done HPS!!

District Cross Country Congratulations to those students who participated in last week’s District Cross Country Trials in Cowra. The 2km and 3km courses were very challenging and tested all runners! Carnival. Lara was our highest placed runner, finishing 7th in the 12/13 years girls’ event, and has been named as first reserve for the Regional Trials. Well done Lara!

Olympics Day On Wednesday 1st June, Holmwood PS will be involved in the Schools Olympics Day to be held at River Park. All students from K-6 will be involved, in the past when we have attended this has been a lot of fun! Students will travel from school to River Park and return via bus. A permission note with all information regarding this day was sent home last week. Please complete and return with the $6 payment by Monday 30th May.

BOOK FAIR is TOMORROW! Holmwood Public School’s Scholastic Book Fair will be held tomorrow 27th May at 12:00pm. All parents and community members are invited to come along and watch our students in our Annual Book Parade! Students will come dressed as their favourite book character and will deliver a short speech. Following the Parade, parents will be invited to purchase books from the Fair. All books sold in the Fair are of excellent quality and are set at great prices. The school will receive a percentage of sales as commission which will be used to purchase more books for our Library. See you there!

Whole School Excursion – 2016!! This year we will be heading to Borambola Sport and Rec Camp! This will be a three-day/two-night excursion and will run from Wednesday 9th November to Friday 11th November. The cost for each student to attend our Borambola excursion is as follows;

Students - $233.00 Parents – $116.00

As spaces on the bus and at our accommodation venue are limited, helpers at this stage will be restricted to Kindergarten Parents only.

Please complete the Borambola Excursion Expression of Interest Form and return to school with $50 deposit by NEXT Friday 3rd June. If you are a parent of a Kindergarten student and would like to also attend, please indicate on the attached Expression of Interest Form. If you would like further information about attending as a Kinder parent helper, please feel free to contact Mrs Skene at school.

Kinder Class News Excitement levels were high this week in Kinder as Tuesday was “THE DAY”!! Yes, that’s right! Our final Jolly Phonics Sound ~

“ar” ~ was learnt, bringing our total number of sounds to 42!! We celebrated with a

little party and enjoyed some yummy party food and dancing games! All Kinder students received a special Certificate at today’s Assembly acknowledging this wonderful achievement! During Maths this week we learned about Fractions and in particular HALVES. We explored cutting shapes in half, drawing lines to cut pictures in halves, matched missing halves from pictures cut out from magazines and on Wednesday with Mrs Webster, we made fairy bread sandwiches and cut them into halves.

During HSIE this week we continued with our unit “The Way We Were” and stepped back in time to the year 1870 via a virtual interactive website. K-2 enjoyed searching for a missing dog called Sam who had wondered into an old Victorian house which had some very different looking furniture to what we have today!

We love working on our “Minibeasts” theme every Thursday and over the past few weeks we have learned heaps about caterpillars and butterflies. We have enjoyed reading “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle and know all about the life cycles of these interesting creatures. Our Art lessons are always great fun and we have created some cute crawling caterpillars and beautiful painted butterflies. Today we moved onto our next Minibeast…..the SPIDER!! Kinder are sooooo excited about Book Fair tomorrow, especially as it is their very first one!! We are looking forward to our Book Fair parade and coming dressed as our favourite book character! Stage 1 Class News During week 5 the students have continued to work diligently in the classroom. In writing, the students have begun to look at editing their pieces of work. We are focusing on full stops and capital letters. We are also developing the skills to write interesting stories. Also in Writing we created a class

planning sheet for Arctic Animals. In small groups, the students have started adding the relevant information using both images and text. Halves and quarters were the basis of the Mathematics lessons this week. The students worked out that two halves equal one whole and four quarters equals one whole. On Wednesday, we used this knowledge to share fairly, three apples and three oranges amongst the class. Stage 2 HSIE looked at an extract from Captain James Cook’s diary. The extract focused on his first encounter with the Indigenous people of Australia. From this, the students discussed how the indigenous community must have felt at this time. In HSIE with Stage 3, the students watched a BTN clip ‘What is Democracy?’ This clip showed the role of the Ancient Greek Assembly. In groups, the students came up with two new laws each. The class was then able to vote on the new laws. Unfortunately, our female and male slaves and the females born in Athens were unable to vote and therefore the voting power was left to the males born in Athens. Stage 2 Class News Week 5 has been another fabulous week in the 3/4 classroom! We have been busy little beavers with the majority of our lessons being taught by Mr Heuston, which has been an enjoyable change for the students. In our “My Place” Unit we have written predications about what we thought the story might be about by only viewing the front and back cover of the book. Following this, we read the story which is set out in decades ranging from 1788 to 1988. The DVD series viewing started on Tuesday; which of course everyone was super excited about and thoroughly enjoyed the first episode “Barangaroo” that we viewed. Following the viewing, the students

wrote a recount of the episode. Mr Heuston was very impressed with everyone’s written recounts, it was lovely to hear this positive feedback. We are all looking forward to more viewings of the episodes along with the engaging activities to follow. Multiplication has been the focus in Maths this week. The classroom has been buzzing with lots of different fun Multiplication games taking place using cards, dice and Rainforest Maths on the computers. I have been extremely happy with everyone’s improvement in this area.

The focus in PD Health lessons this week has been ‘What is bullying?’ with lots of discussion and hands-on activities taking place in the classrooms. This is a very pertinent topic for the students as they need to be aware of what defines bullying, what isn’t

bullying and what strategies they can implement to seek help. I can’t wait to see the magnificent outfits that will be on display tomorrow for Book Fair. I wonder which book character Mr Heuston and Mrs Skene will be coming dressed as??!! News for next week is: Free Choice. Please remember homework is due tomorrow (except for those 2 excited boys that drew a ‘free homework pass’ from the Dojo prize box last week!). I hope you can stay warm this weekend! Stage 3 Class News In the classroom this week the Year 5/6 class

has been busy learning about area in Maths.

They have learnt about the squared centimetre,

the squared metre and converted square

metres into hectares to find out the total area

of the school. They then put this knowledge to

use to decide on how big an area we are going to

need for the construction of the chicken coop in

our ‘Chicken Run’ STEM project.

In English students have learning about Microsoft

Office 365 as a learning tool. We can

collaboratively work on documents online with

Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. The students

were excited to see that they can type in a

document and at the same time their friends

can be working on the same document. This is

the method that we will be using to document

our learning with “Chicken Run”.

In Science the Year 5/6 students are asked to

please bring in an empty PRINGLES cylinder NEXT

MONDAY in order for them to make a pinhole

camera to understand the concept of how light

is transferred to capture an image. This week

they learnt about the different forms of light

and ways that light is used in technology today.

CHICKEN RUN UPDATE

Thank you to Matt and Harry who presented their information report on the Light Sussex Chicken at last week’s Assembly. This week Lilly and Will are

presenting their findings on the Rhode Island Red Chicken. After we have finished our information reports and all have been presented to the school, each student will take a vote on the type of chicken that we will then house here at HPS. This week the year 5/6 class have been conducting the necessary investigations to find out the recommendations for building chicken coops in schools. They have consulted the RSPCA website and are learning about policies and procedures that need to be taken to put in an application for a school to build such a structure. In the coming weeks we will be contacting the Cowra Shire Council to find out the regulations for building a dwelling on school premises. They are also using the animals in schools website
