Excellence in Education Congratulations to Jill Bevins for being selected to receive an Ed-ucator Professional Development Award from the Great Lakes Center for Youth Development for 2014. Mrs. Bevins will be
using her $500 award to purchase two new keyboards for the dis-trict to enhance our music program.

2014 PRESIDENTS CLUB In recognition of Presidents Day, $100 was donated by

generous donors increased the reward to $150. Sofia Van den ende, Camila Tierrablanca,

met the challenge and walked away with the cash! Congratulations on a job well done!
NORTH COUNTRY
TRAIL CHALLENGE The annual marathon walk course has
been changed this year due to the con-
struction and increased traffic on Co Rd
550. The 5th—8th grade students and
teachers will be hiking an average of 5 miles a day on
the North Country Trail, starting at the Little Garlic Rd
and ending at the Forestville Trailhead. The trail leads
through beautiful woods with stunning views. Commu-
nity members are invited to join in the hike. If you are
interested, please call the school for more details.
News from the Library The library recently received a
grant for $600 from the Mar-
quette County Community Foun-
dation’s Youth Advisory Com-
mittee. We have purchased a
number of new, fun books to add
to our collection. These include
Mo Willem’s Elephant & Piggie
books, which the kids are really
enjoying. Come check them out!
We want to extend a hearty thank you to the Youth Ad-
visory Committee for their generous support! We appreciate all
they do to contribute to the success of our students!
A big thank you to Pastor
Carolyn Raffensperger for
donating her beautiful and exten-
sive shell collection to PTS. Many
varieties of rare specimens are
available for student studies.
Some the best will be on display
in the library.
Taking advantage of the winter
learning opportunities right outside
our doors. Thank you to the trail
crew at the Big Bay Pathway!
Mr. Gill introduced his 1st and 2nd grade students to
Kite, his lead sled dog ,and let them experience a few
quick dog sled rides.
It’s “Greek to Me /When in Rome” was the
theme for this years reading month . Chariot
races, snow sculptors, Pin Day, Crazy Hair
Day, Olympic races, all added to the fun of
learning the importance of reading!
Winter Carnival 2014

their snowshoe hike
Another awesome production by the Powell
Township School and Community Theatre
under the direction of Kathy Wright, with
the help of many, many volunteers hit the
stage in February. The cast of over 30 was
made up of PTS students, high school stu-
dents, staff, and community members who
all put in many hours and worked hard to
bring the story of Princess Whatsername,
played by Bekka Taylor, to the stage. Pic-
tured at right is a scene with the Evil Forest
Witch, Hansel, Gretel and Prince Reveille.
Students served treats they baked themselves and entertained
guests, with some old time songs, at the Senior Valentine’s Day Tea.
Math, technology, community
service, science all lumped into
one hands-on project. Old blue
jeans were collected and sewn
into shopping bags by the 7th
and 8th grade students with the
help of Gay and Sam Oslund.
Every student in school received
one of the hand made bags.
Ava’s guinea pigs, Panda
and Corrina, got to spend
a day with the 1st and
2nd grade students.
Quincy and Aaliyah creating
works of art from old CD’s
during one of the three all day
art days. Under the direction
of art teacher Carol Phillips
students are introduced to
many different art mediums
by local artists. See some of
the projects created by our
students on display at the
Devos Childrens Art Show
May 12-22.
Several Salmon raised from eggs in an aquarium in the 7th
and 8th grade classroom, will be released next week into
the Iron River. The project is sponsored by Trout Unlim-
ited. Students have routinely monitored Ph, nitrates,
chorine and ammonia levels, water temperature, as well as
daily care of the fish and tank. The life cycle from egg to
fingerling ,played out right before their eyes.
SWEET !
5th –8th grade had to move the sugar shack
into the garage this year to avoid some
nasty weather, but sap was collected, boiled,
and the maple syrup was enjoyed over waf-
fles that the students prepared for them-
selves for a special classroom breakfast.
WE’VE GOT WORMS!!
Jan, James and Zoie, bury
food leftovers from lunch,
into the worm bin. The
worms convert the waste into
compost which will be used
in the school flower garden.
Mr. Gill built the bins for
both 1/2 and 7/8 classrooms
last fall. Students were excit-
ed to find baby worms in the
bins a few weeks ago.
Jacob shows off
“PTS Flat Stanley”
who will be travel-
ing world wide and
return home to
share pictures and
stories of his ad-
ventures with the
students in the 3rd
and 4th grade
As the temperatures warm, and they will warm, we will be putting the wraps on another
school year here at Powell Township School. We are entering into a very important time in the life
of our school and community. PTS has served as the educational beacon in the community for
many years. The Powell Township community has been extremely generous with their time and
financial resources in supporting the efforts of our school. Without a caring community, our chil-
dren would not receive the full benefit of what Powell Township School has to offer them as they
chart the course of their lives. Being prepared for life in a local school is one of the many strengths
that PTS offers our families. Our students are not only educated with a sense of community pride
but also greatly benefit from the lower class sizes, advanced instruction, and a well-trained teach-
ing staff.
This August, our community will be faced with a millage proposal that renews the funding
source for PTS. In 1994, Powell Township residents voted in 18 mils on non homestead property
for 20 years for operating funds for our school. We are at the end of the twenty years and will need
to renew the funding to keep our doors at PTS open. It is an opportunity to express your voice re-
garding the importance of the future of Powell Township children’s education. The vote calls to
question the importance of our school and the role it plays in our community. Please take some
time and examine the FAQ contained in this newsletter.
If you have any questions regarding the proposed election or any matters involving your
school, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Dan Barry
