While summer can be rather quiet in Storrs, once mid-August hits you wouldn’t know it. All of the student leaders descend onto campus, and begin a whirlwind of training and event planning for the upcoming semester, and what a semester SUBOG has in store! In true SUBOG fashioned we kicked off Husky WOW with a bang, participating, along with numerous other student leaders on campus in Convocation, welcoming our new Huskies, and helping to make an old tradition new and exciting. From there we did not slow down, hosting the Husky WOW Block Party on Saturday evening, featuring everyone’s favorite attraction, FREE FUN!!SUBOG rounded out the weekend with the ever so popular Hip Hop Comedy Jam on Sunday night, featuring comedians Rob Haze and Wil Sylvince, who brought the audience to tears, hitting them with joke after joke. One might think after such a hectic week the SUBOG students would take a break, but SUBOGers and SUBOG Alum know better than that. Planned for the semester is a weekly movie series that will keep any movie lover entertained, and we have comedians coming in every other Thursday to make sure the laughs don’t stop! Travel is escaping Storrs with four trips this semester, bringing students to the Big E, Six Flags Fright Fest, Boston, and a newly opened trampoline park in CT, for a jumping good time! The Fine and Performing Art’s committee is taking their infamous open mic nights on the road, hosting them in the new Co-op located downtown in Storrs Center, and let’s not forgot Homecoming. This year, Homecoming 2014 is encouraging all UConn Huskies,

Mike Malenfant, a new Higher Education and Student Affairs Masters Program student, will be working with the Student Union staff this year as a Graduate Assistant. Mike earned his Bachelor’s degree from Bryant University in Smithfield, RI in Management. He will be overseeing the Doug Bernstein Game Room, as well as working on various other special projects throughout the Union this year. During his undergraduate years, Mike worked with Admissions, Orientation, Student Center Operations and Greek Life. Welcome Mike!

The new Jonathan XIV Mascot was revealed on August 18 in the President’s #ALSIceBucketChallenge video! To view the video, please visit http://bit.ly/1rC3Gsf.

The Class of 2018 participated in a new UConn Convocation tradition on August 22, 2014. The 3,500+ members of the Class of 2018 walked through arches as they entered UConn’s Student Union Mall. The students gathered around a stage in the center of the Mall and listened to speakers, President Susan Herbst, Provost Mun Choi, Dean of Students Eleanor Daugherty, and USG President Mark Sargent. The students had battery operated candles that they lit along with a six-foot torch on stage that signified the start of a new academic year and celebrated the unity of the Class of 2018.
