Car travel
We strongly recommend not bringingyour car to Leicester as the Universitydoes not allow (non-disabled) studentsto park on its academic sites duringworking hours and parking at the Hallsis extremely limited.
The University is supporting the CityCouncils efforts to reduce congestion andthe associated pollution and otherdetrimental environmental effects. We areworking to provide you with convenient, sustainable forms of transport to makeLeicester a safe, attractive and pleasantplace to live, study and work in.
Green driving
If you do drive, here are some tips to makethe journey a bit greener and a lot cheaperby reducing fuel consumption:
• Pump up your tyres – under-inflatedtyres burn more fuel (and are dangerous)
• Clear out any extra weight – removeclutter from your boot
• Have your vehicle servicedregularly – keep your engine efficient
• Drive at an appropriate speed –70mph can bring savings of around10% for your fuel bill compared todriving at 80mph, plus it’s illegal!
• Switch it off – modern cars use virtuallyno extra fuel when they’re re-startedwithout pressing the accelerator. Turn offif you’re going to be stationary for morethan two minutes
• Check your revs – change up between2000rpm and 2500rpm and keep itsmooth
• Reduce drag – remove roof racks, roofboxes and bike carriers when not in use
• Roll your windows down instead ofusing air conditioning (unless you’re athigh speed)
• Buy a greener car – see the Act onCO2 website for advice
A huge 344,000 car journeys are madein and out of Leicester city each day. That’s 33 million journeys in the city peryear – a 6.8% rise since 2001. Thatexplains the congestion then!
