i welcome mr Corey Jewel to eltham High school. Corey is currently the Assistant Principal at Lalor secondary College and is involved in the Principal internship Program through the Bastow institute of Leadership. Corey will be a member of staff at our school until the end of term 3. i am actually welcoming Corey back into our learning community since he is a past student and graduate of eltham High school (Class 1988).

the focus of the internship Program is to provide aspirant leaders with an on the job view of the role of the Principal and support the succession planning agenda of the profession.

i wish Corey all the very best during his time with us and i hope that he has a very fruitful and encouraging experience.

Case Study: ATC21S - Assessing and Teaching 21st Century skills – Collaborative Problem Solving at Eltham High School (Victoria, Australia):

the extract below is from the draft case study report on assessing collaboration and 21st Century skills conducted at our school. the report is accompanied by a short video depicting a number of our students as they engage with the collaborative learning task on line assessment tool. once the report and video become available i will inform our community of the link where the case study can be accessed.

the data collected will be used to inform PisA on its direction to access collaborative learning skills in its assessment regime across the globe:

“Education researchers, policy makers and private enterprise agree that, in addition to content knowledge, students in the 21st century need to acquire particular skills to equip them for a modern world of work. This is a real problem facing teachers today: how to teach skills to equip students for living and working in the 21st century. Research into the Assessment and Teaching of 21st Century Skills (ATC21S) has grouped these skills into four categories: ways of thinking; ways of working; tools for working; and skills for living in the world.

While teachers have many tools for assessing students’ content knowledge they do not always have tools to assess skills such as collaborative problem solving. Collaborative problem solving has been identified by PISA as a key skill for the 21st century.

Patrick Griffin and Esther Care from The University of Melbourne’s Assessment Research Centre, say that “Collaborative problem solving is a complex skill requiring both social and cognitive competencies. It was rationalised by the ATC 21S project team as a composite skill arising from the links between critical thinking, problem solving, decision making and collaboration.”

Importantly, Collaborative Problem Solving is about combining the skills and knowledge of all team members to solve complex problems. It requires participation, perspective taking, social and task regulation, and knowledge building.

By working with real teachers and real students the ATC21S team have developed an assessment tool to provide real data to teachers and parents about students’ collaborative problem solving skills.

Eltham High School is committed to teaching 21st century skills, including collaboration and problem solving. However, as Loren Clarke, English KLA Coordinator at the school found, the school had no data to provide meaningful insights into students’ skills in these areas.

After approaching the ATC21S team at The University of Melbourne Loren began using the collaborative problem solving assessment tool in 2014. The Year 7 students at Eltham High School participate in a team-taught inquiry-based program which is an ideal environment for implementing the ATC21S assessment tool.

The assessment tool involves pairs of students working online to solve a problem. Each partner has different information on their screen and they need to communicate and share information in order to solve a problem. They communicate via a chat box and they need to adjust their language and communication style so that they can work effectively as a pair. An example of one of the problems students have to solve is growing a plant: one student can control the temperature and the other can control the water for the plant and they need to work together to make the plant grow.

Claire Scoular, Research Officer at The University of Melbourne’ Assessment Research Centre, observes that it is complex for even the most experienced teachers to assess each student’s collaborative problem solving skills in a normal classroom situation. The benefit of the ATC21S tool is that it provides the teacher with baseline data for each student.”

Term 3 Working Bee

A big thank you to all members of our community, parents, students and staff that attended this term’s working Bee on sunday, 23 August. A great deal was achieved. in particular 430 plants were planted along the embankment of the front oval bring the number of plants in this area to around 1000. As these grow, a fantastic environment will be created for our students and for our community. one again i congratulate the Grounds Committee for its work in the planning of the day’s work and for its passion and commitment to continue to enhance our school grounds. A particular thankyou to sue washington and John Coates who came in during the week prior to the working Bee to get things started. A more detailed report appears in a further section of this newsletter.

// WorkinG BEE

Working Bee: Sunday, 23 August

Despite fewer numbers than expected, most of the planned priorities were achieved by the 12.30pm finish time. A solid 30 parents, students, teachers and past parents turned out in perfect conditions to complete an impressive array of tasks. Looking from Bell street, back to the school, there is now a sea of plants, protective bags and an abundance of mulch. it will be good to see how it looks in 2 or 3 years’ time.

thanks to all our volunteers, but particularly our Grounds Committee personnel, who take charge of tasks and organise materials and food for the day.

the following tasks were completed:

•A 6.5 section of post and pipe fence was assembled inside the main courtyard complex to protect plants that were planted in 2014.

•430 new plants were provided with new homes adjacent to the cricket nets area. these plants were subsequently bagged and staked. this brings to in excess of 800 plants planted in this area in the last 2 working Bees.

•15m³ of mulch was barrowed and transported to the area above.

•Plants that were a focus at recent plantings in march and may of this year (approximately 600 around the Performance Centre) were cleared of weed invasion, and stakes and protective guards were secured.

•Pressure cleaning of pavers and concrete was completed on the north side of the 700s block.

•mowing and brush cutting in a range of locations across the campus complex was achieved.

Plant Species:

in relation to the plant species we have used around the Performance Centre and the area adjacent to the cricket nets, for those who may be interested, the following have been used: eucalyptus Lacrimins, Banksia marginata, Lomandra longifolia tanika, Correa dusky bells, Grevillea “molly” and orthrosanthus multiflorus

thanks again to all our volunteers on what was again a successful day. Listed below are all those volunteers who signed the registration book on the day.

Robert Ackland, Leo Adamson, Linda Lee and Darren Bowden, Hilary Cantwell, John Coates, Dave Eales, Karen Eaton, Mariano Imbrioscia, Leanne Ipsen, Tim Kervin, Laws family, Frank Medcalf, David and Lisa Norden , Kelly O’Donnell, Cain Polidano, Vincent Sicari, Hannah Smailes, Andrea Tilley, Simon Treadwell, Steve Turner, Sue Tutera, Sue Washington and Tess Williver.

the next working Bee will now not be until october 2015.
