Working on a “Master Plan“ for your stu-

dies? Study Urban and Spatial Planning at

Erfurt University of Applied Sciences!

Urban and Spatial Planning deals with the varied needs of society for built-up and undeveloped environments, and conflicts and opportunities that thus arise. Topics include settlement development, economics, leisure and recrea-tion, mobility, nature conservation and water and waste management. Urban and Spatial Planners attempt to gauge contradicting claims of utilisation of space while undertaking efforts to minimise conflicts. Spatial and Urban Planners initiate, accompany and coordinate processes of planning, develop solutions and strategies and manage the implemen-tation of concepts and measures.

Erfurt University of Applied Sciences focuses on an integra-ted approach of urban development and urban regeneration with equal consideration for economical, social , cultural and environmental concerns. Cooperative planning methods that involve relevant actors, especially economic actors and civil society in the processes of planning and development are of great importance (Urban Governance/ City Management). Specific challenges of demographic change, sustainability and globalization in particular are taken into account.Further information concerning course structure and content can be found online at www.fh-erfurt.de/arc/sr.

Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.)

The Bachelor´s degree of Urban and Spatial Planning is a basic programme leading to the profession’s first degree. The standard period of study is six semesters. Students will gain a profound scientific and practice- oriented educa-tion. Students complete the programme with a Bachelor of Science degree, which qualifies graduates to work in the field of Urban and Spatial Planning. The central objective of the Bachelor´s degree programme is to impart qualifications that enable students to work on projects and processes in an analytical manner. With the aid of planning instruments and methods as well as computer aided applications students are enabled to work out proposals for solutions. The course only hosts a limited number of applicants (Numerus Clausus).

Master of Science (M. Sc.)

The Masters programme provides the necessary capabilities and knowledge required by the Chamber of Architects. On completion of their studies, students will also be competent to work in research and science. As in the Bachelor pro-gramme, study projects are a fundamental part of the degree programme. To qualify for admittance to the Master‘s de-gree programme, students must have obtained a Bachelor‘s degree in Urban and Spatial Planning or a comparable field of study with a grade point average of at least 2.5. Letters of motivation are subject to review prior to programme admittance.

Project work

The study programme of Urban and Spatial Planning is cha-racterized by intensive project work. Each semester, students will work on a project related to current topics in the field of study. For example, during the first semester of the Bachelor’s programme, students will gain insight into the Urban System through the «Stadttouren» project. During the third and fifth semester, study projects are focused on the development of urban and landscape designs. Every study project is completed in small groups of students in order to practice team-oriented work and goal-oriented commu-nication. Combined with lectures and seminars, the study projects create a link to professional practice.

Internships before and while studying

A pre-study internship is not required before starting the programme. In the fourth semester of the Bachelor pro-gramme, students are required to complete an internship in Germany or abroad for a minimum period of 12 weeks. The internship provides students with insight into activities of urban and spatial planners in public administration, planning offices, private sector enterprises or non- governmental organisations. Furthermore students are given the possibility to establish professional and personal contacts.

Excursions

Along with study projects and intern-ships, urban and spatial planning excursions in Germany and abroad addressing recent topics form the third link to professional practice. Excursions are of high importance and are therefore a compulsory part of the study programme.

Occupational areas of Urban and Spatial

Planners

Urban and Spatial Planners can find employment both in the public and private sector. There is a strong demand in public administration at municipal, regional, national and European level. Furthermore jobs can be found in private planning offices. Activities range from coordinating spatial planning processes to working out regional or municipal development strategies. Other employment opportunities may be found with associations and non-governmental organisations. Gra-duates of the Master‘s programme are especially qualified to work in scientific and research institutes. Capacity for teamwork, versatility and working in a project and process-oriented way are key competences that graduates contribute to professional practice.

Urban and Spatial Planners are employed in the following occupational areas among others:

> Urban development and planning> Urban management and marketing> Neighbourhood development and social-spatial planning> Regional and national planning> Regional management> City and regional marketing> Village renewal and development > Housing and real estate management> Traffic planning> Environmental planning> Economic promotion
