All the major high street names can be found at the Intu Potteries Shopping Centre in Hanley, along

great range of restaurants and bars.

Festival Park is the major retail entertainment centre which includes a range of shops, Water World

swimming centre, a Multi-Screen Cinema, a DRY SKI SLOPE, ten pin bowling, and a

snooker hall.

Within the surrounding area of Stoke-on-Trent, you will also find the Regent Theatre, REPERTORY THEATRE

and Victoria Hall, that offer live music, theatre and comedy.

Other major local attractions include Alton Towers, the Derbyshire Peak District, Cannock Chase, Churnet Valley Railway, and TRENTHAM ESTATE AND GARDENS. There are also some National Trust and

English Heritage sites and several museums associated with the traditional industries of Stoke-on-Trent,

like Gladstone Pottery. Other attractions include Trentham Monkey Forest, Uttoxeter Racecourse, BURTON-ON-TRENT BREWERIES, Tamworth SnowDome, Crewe Lyceum Theatre, and Rudyard Lake.

Being more neighbourly makes our communities stronger, happier and feel more safe.

• Introduce yourself and share details. Use our friendly cut-out postcard at the back.

• Take responsibility for your bins, litter and waste. There’s another handy cut-out

postcard for you at the back!

• The frontage of your home should be kept tidy and free of rubbish. Avoid gardens and hedges

becoming overgrown and unsightly.

• Keep communal doors closed and don’t let anyone in whom you don’t know. This way

everyone’s home is kept secure.

• Use lockable alley gates properly, for everyone’s security. The landlord should provide a key.

• Always remember to park considerately and be aware of parking restrictions; avoid blocking

entrances, dropped kerbs, garages or pavements.

• You might not always find a parking spot outside your house. The Highway Code allows anyone

to park on a public road but not on double yellow lines.• If you’ve purchased a residents parking permit, or have a reserved space or driveway, use

them correctly.

• Keep noise to a minimum, especially during night hours (11pm - 7am). If you are

planning a party, it is courteous to let your neighbours know in advance.

• To report unacceptable noise or nuisance visit the

Local Authority/Council website or call 01782 742590.

Be Caring - Get Involved!Your Students’ Union can support you to make a positive difference to your local community. If you want to get involved in local volunteering opportunities, clean-up events, charity fundraising or have an idea for a community project, visit the KeeleSU volunteering webpage or find us on the KeeleSU App. You can join Clubs & Societies on the app too!

Being a good neighbour

Remember, you can be evicted from your home for Anti Social Behaviour, as well as be disciplined by the University if there are serious complaints about you that discredit the University. Warning

Page 9: Student - KeeleSU

Waste is something every house produces, and can become a real issue in communities. Here’s how to manage your waste, litter and recyclables correctly.

• Take a look at your waste information card on the back cover to check what goes where.

• All waste and recycling must be put in the correct bin. Additional bags won’t be collected. Dumping waste in an unauthorised place is called fly-tipping and is illegal.

• Bins MUST be outside for collection by 6am on collection day. Put them out the night before! Find your regular collection day here: www.newcastle-staffs.gov.uk/all-services/recycling-and-waste/collection-date-finder

• Line your indoor food waste container with a plastic bag to avoid any mess.

• Don’t lose your bins! Use bin stickers for ALL containers. You can buy these cheaply from bargain shops in town.

• Don’t forget to put your bins away after collection! Store them within your property boundary in an accessible and convenient place.

• For anything that is broken or unusable, Staffordshire County Council operates the Household Waste Recycling Centre, known as ‘The Tip’. White goods and other large electrical items are accepted. The site is located at Leycett Lane, ST5 6AD. Check opening times on the website: www.staffordshire.gov.uk/Waste-and-recycling/recyclingcentres/NewcastleRecyclingCentre.aspx

• If you have any bulky household items that you no longer need but could be used by someone else, see www.furnituremine.emmauspotteries.org.uk/bulky-items or call the Donna Louise Shop on 01782 635504 for collection.

• To order new or additional bins, visit: https://www.newcastle-staffs.gov.uk/online-form/?id=28 or call 01782 717717.

• If you would like to subscribe to the garden waste collection service, please speak to your landlord.

9

Managing your waste

Keep Recyclables in the loop by cleaning your items before putting them in recycling boxes.

Page 10: Student - KeeleSU

We are invested in making sure you’re as safe as possible, to make your student experience a great one.

Top Tips: • Keep yourself and your property safe. Lock doors and windows at all times and report any suspicious behaviour to the police.• Tell someone you trust where you are heading and when you expect to be back.• Mark all your property with identifiable details (use a UV pen) and take a photograph of any valuable items you might have.• Visit www.staffordshire.police.uk/crimeprevention for crime prevention advice. • There are various Staffordshire support agencies listed on: www.staffordshireconnects.info

Downloadable Apps and ResourcesThe what3words app Use the app for communicating location. Every 3m2 in the world is assigned a unique three word address that will never change. Use it to find tents at festivals, navigate to accommodation or direct emergency services to the right place. Use it if you are lost to pinpoint your location. Safezone appWhilst on campus, in an emergency or if you need first aid, one tap on the app can alert University security. You’ll also receive any important information about the campus, meaning round-the-clock safety reassurance. www.hollieguard.com A Smartphone App. If in danger a shake or tap activates Hollie Guard, which automatically sends your location and audio/video evidence to your designated contacts. www.suzylamplugh.orgFor issues regarding personal safety, stalking and harassment.
