STUDENT HANDBOOK

PAGE 2 REGIONAL M ARTIAL ARTS ALLIANCE

Welcome to

Regional Martial Arts Alliance

As a new student and/or parent, you will have many questions. This guide was created to help answer many of those for you. It can serve as a reference for you and your family as you continue your Tae

Kwon Do instruction. Communication is key. Please let us know of any questions or concerns you may have. It will help in our ability to serve you, your family and the community.

Our Martial Arts Philosophy

We teach self control, leadership, communication, a healthy lifestyle, honesty, manners and pride

through the advancement in belt ranks. This is done with humility, kindness and the understanding that

each student has gifts in different areas. We foster those gifts by challenging each student and working

to improve areas that are less well developed.

Each gym is a part of a larger organization called the Regional Martial Arts Alliance. The Alliance was founded by a group of martial artists who are dedicated to assisting and enhancing martial arts

professionals and organizations. They are committed to acting with integrity in all aspects of business,

personal and professional growth. Their International, Kukkiwon-Certified Examiners ensure your rank

will be recognized worldwide.

What is Tae Kwon Do?

Tae Kwon Do is characterized by its unique emphasis on kicks. The word Tae Kwon Do is often

translated as “the way of hand and foot” or “the art of kicking and punching”. It originated in Korea for

self defense and dates back to 50 BC.

What can you Expect?

In class, we speak some of the commands in Korean including counting, bowing to the flag and many

others. At first you may feel awkward and out of place. Don’t worry, this is normal and every student

felt this way in the beginning. Tae Kwon Do is about taking care of those who can’t take care of

themselves, meaning the Black Belts will watch out for you during class and assist you as you become

more comfortable. It is good to ask questions. Some of them can be answered in this Student

Handbook. Be sure to take good care of this Handbook. It has the terminology information you need

for each test along with a breakdown of the requirements for every level. In addition, you can add your

own notes and sheets to the Student Handbook to log and document your Tae Kwon Do career.

We look forward to training with you and watching your skills advance and grow

along with all of the new belt colors you are going to earn!

OUR BEGINNINGS

Master Jennifer Lourey has been training in Tae Kwon Do since 1999 and opened her original gym, Regional Tae Kwon Do, in 2004 in Cold Spring, MN. In her pursuit of knowledge and dedication to her students, she created and formed an organization to assist and enhance Korean Martial Arts Professionals and Organizations. This is the Regional Martial Arts Alliance (RMAA). As President of this organization, she can offer continued avenues for growth in rank, certification, leadership and business skills for it ’s members. Each member is committed to acting with integrity in all aspects of business, personal and professional growth.

The President, Master Jen, holds several ranks in many martial arts along with a doctorate in Chiropractic and licensed in Acupuncture.

• Kukkiwon Certified 5th Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do

• Moo Duk Kwon Certified 6th Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do

• 4th Degree Black Belt in Hapkido

• 3rd Degree Black Belt in Kumdo

• Certified Kumdo Examiner

• Kukkiwon Certified Tae Kwon Do Examiner

• Certified Self Defense Instructor and Trainer

• Certified Group Fitness Instructor

Her training has brought her to South Korea on four separate occasions for training and testing. She has had the honor to train with high level martial artists including Grand Master Moo Yung Yun (9th Degree Kukkiwon Certified Black Belt) and Grand Master Dragon Kim (9th Degree Kukkiwon Certified Black Belt, 1st Class Kukkiwon Examiner, Internationally Certified Referee). Each experience has reinforced her drive to share her knowledge of Tae Kwon Do with everyone she meets. Over her years of teaching, she has the privilege of training several Black Belts to Master (4th Degree) level.

Although training, managing gyms/Alliance and testing takes her away from the gym on occasion, Master Jen continues to teach classes and work one -on-one with both colored belts and Black Belts. Regional Martial Arts Alliance prides itself on the quality and quantity of it ’s Instructors. You can contact Master Jen directly, at any time:

WHITE BELT ETIQUETTE

Along with a lot of hard work and sweat, there are a few things that you need to know and remember about being a Tae

Kwon Do student. The following are some pointers and reminders for you to follow. If you ever have a question, please

feel free to ask your Head Instructor or any Black Belt. Starting your Tae Kwon Do career can be overwhelming at first.

This sheet will help you to understand a few common “do’s and don’ts”.

NEVER wash your belt. If you wash your belt, you will ruin it and wash all of your hard work away. WASH

your uniform and footpads on a regular basis. DO NOT use bleach on your uniforms. It will turn them yellow.

Always take good care of your belt and uniform. DO NOT let them get dirty or lie around on the floor.

You will receive periodic emails with information. Important dates are posted on our website and on the

Facebook page. Check both often.

DO NOT wear all of your equipment to class. All you need in class is your uniform, belt and footpads. All of

your sparring gear, (elbow pads, groin cup, mouth guard) is only used in open gyms, tournaments, scrimmages

and special classes. We recommend you purchase a Tae Kwon Do bag for all of your equipment to be brought

back and forth to class and to tournaments. Footpads are required after your first belt test and nun chucks are

required at Blue Belt level.

It is OK to hem your uniform if it is too long. The easiest for long pants is to fold over the waistband. Especially

children, as they grow, you can let out the hems. It is better that the uniform fits a little big rather than too

small. Generally, a colored belt uniform should last about 3 years until Black Belt time.

After you attain your White Belt, you are ready to participate in open gyms. We will let you know via email if

and when we will be holding any open gyms or special classes. Make sure to bring ALL of your equipment along

to these types of classes unless otherwise specified.

Make sure you mark all your Tae Kwon Do equipment with a Permanent marker. Write your name BIG on

your hand pads, foot pads, and elbow pads. Mark your mouth guard case and the inside of both the top and

bottom of your uniform. It is a good idea to write our TKD Gym’s name on them, too, so they can be returned

to us if they are lost at a tournament or scrimmage.

After you get your uniform, we will be taking the tops in to get the gym logo screen-printed on them. An email

will be sent about the date and instructions on what to do that day.

Targets are not required until you are a Yellow Belt. At that time, you will be informed of the costs and types of

the pads that are available. You may shop in the Pro Shop online or at the gym.

Remember that all the higher ranking colored belts that you see before you all started where you are

just beginning. Everyone is here to make sure that you become the best that you can be.

GOALS OF A STUDENT

The Student will strive for a complete understanding of all aspects of Tae Kwon Do. Students will be given many

opportunities to learn and should stay focused at each opportunity. A good student can learn anywhere or

anytime. This is the secret to knowledge and lifelong learning.

The student should always have a sincere outlook on Tae Kwon Do. If there is a misunderstanding, the student

strive for a solution with the instructor, keeping in mind the Tenets of Tae Kwon Do at all times.

Students will dedicate themselves to their personal growth in Tae Kwon Do. This may mean involvement in

tournaments, demonstration or helping out at special classes. Students can always learn more about themselves,

their technique, and other people by teaching.

Students will establish long-range goals for themselves and be able to teach Tae Kwon Do to others.

Students will demonstrate maturity and be a good example of a true martial artist, as well as develop a good

sense of sportsmanship.

Students will honor the Instructors by listening to them. If problems arise, they can be handled in a professional

manner. Any discussion with the instructor will be done with parent involvement.

Students will neither be conceited nor complacent. Striving to be better and recognizing that there is always

much to learn are qualities of a good martial artist. Tae Kwon Do techniques shall not be used against others

without good reason.

Students will have faith and confidence in their gym, their instructors, and the centuries old principles of Tae

Kwon Do.

Students will follow the rules of etiquette and be a good example for others to follow at home, school and all

other social functions. Remember, student’s conduct outside the gym is a direct reflection of the art, the

instructor and the students themselves.

Students will strive to be martial artists. They will demonstrate courage, wisdom, kindness, as well as control of

their minds and bodies.

Students will remember that Tae Kwon Do training is a privilege, not a right. This privilege is earned by

following the rules of the home, school, and community. Future promotions will be based on the student’s

completion of these goals and proficiency of the required material.

Transition to Regular Youth Class

This happens automatically at Yellow Belt level. Most children are 6 years old

by this time. The determination to transition can be made early if the student

shows proficiency, maturity and the skill level to advance.

REGIONAL M ARTIAL ARTS ALLIANCE PAGE 9

Testing

Testing is usually conducted every 3 months. Students are recommended by the Instructor if they are ready.

Every student has to earn their belt and work hard for it. Students who do not pass, will be able to retest during

regular classes. Forms are emailed out and handed out in classes. All colored belt test fees must be paid two

weeks in advance of testing and students must be current on their account to be eligible to test. Certificates will

be issued through the KwanJangNim for colored belt ranks and from the Kukkiwon for Black Belt ranks.

Tournaments/Scrimmages

Tournaments and Scrimmages are offered throughout the year. Posters are put up in the lobby along with the

information posted on Facebook, the website and emailed to parents. Tournaments are not required for a

colored belt student to advance in rank. Tournaments and Scrimmages are an extracurricular activity that one

can take part in at their own expense. The Tournaments are large events, involving multiple schools. The

Scrimmages are smaller events and are offered as extra practice time for Tournament competition.

Monthly Fees and Cancellation Policy

Monthly fees are to be paid at the 1st class of each month. Any fees not paid by the 5th of the month will be

charged a late fee. These fees are on a month-to-month basis unless choosing to do a pre-pay option. All fees

are final and no refunds will be given. If you are unable to attend for a month or want to cancel, it is your

responsibility to give a written notice 14 days before the month begins to avoid the monthly charge.

Make-Up Classes

Students who miss a class (illness, weather, vacations, etc.), are welcome to come on an alternate night at any

one of our multiple locations to make up that class.

Winter Weather and Canceled Classes

There are no classes on major holidays (Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, 4th of July, Thanksgiving Day, etc.).

However, these days will always be announced by the Instructor, be posted at the gym and emailed out. For

extreme weather conditions, cancellations will be posted on the Facebook page, website and emailed. It is the

student’s/parent’s responsibility to check these locations or call to verify the status of classes during poor

weather conditions. If the gym’s school district has closed or released early, there will be no classes.

Other Events

We often have extra events for students: Pizza Parties, Climbing Camps, TKD Camps, Break-a-thons, Holiday

Party, Black Belt Banquet, etc. These events are a great way to meet more kids, have fun outside the normal

classes, and be challenged with various drills, obstacles, and techniques. Flyers are emailed out, handed out and

posted with the information about the activity. These are extra activities that you can take part in at your own

expense. Watch Facebook and the website for more details.

TOURNAMENTS

***Rules listed are followed by Regional Martial Arts Alliance Schools

Pattern Presentation (Forms and Weapons)

It is beneficial for students to practice their pattern “presentation” before a tournament. This is something parents can help practice. In Pattern competition, the

competitors are called to a holding area to be split into divisions and then led to their competition ring and lined up outside the “competition” area. There will

be judges seated in front of the head table who will bow in all competitors and ask them to sit. The Head Judge will call an individual competitor’s name, at which

time the competitor should reply with the loud answer of “Yes, Sir/Ma’am” as they stand up, bow, turn around, straighten their uniform/tighten their belt, turn

back, bow and make their way in front of the judges. Once reaching the Judges, they bow again, stand in Jun Bi and announce; Name, Gym Name and Pattern

they are presenting.

Ex: “Judges, my name is Jen Doe from Regional Tae Kwon Do. It is my privilege to present Tae Geuk Il Chang. Judges (bow)”

At this point, the Head Judge will instruct the competitor to back up. The competitor responds “Yes, Sir/Ma’am” and moves to the starting position. From the

starting position, they bow and stand in Jun Bi, waiting for the starting command of “Shijak” (begin). The competitor goes through their pattern to the last move,

holding it until they hear the word “Germahn” (stop). The Judge will ask the competitor to turn around while the Judges give two scores. The first score is the

whole number and the second score is a decimal point, thus giving the student a score between 5.0 and 9.9.The Judge will instruct the competitor to turn back

around. The competitor responds with “Yes, Sir/Ma’am”, turns around and bows. The Judge will release them to sit back down and they should again respond

with “Yes, Sir/Ma’am” before bowing and being seated. Once all competitors have performed, scores will be totaled and awards will be handed out. The Head

Judge will bow out the competitors, signaling their competition in that ring is complete.

Practicing these steps in advance of competition will make the competitor more confident and comfortable. Some of the criteria the Judges are scoring on are:

Accuracy of the Pattern, Manners, Confidence, Timing/Speed, Agility/Grace.

Sparring Competition

Competitors will be called to the holding area to be split into divisions and led to their competition ring. They should bring all of their sparring gear with them to

the holding area. The competition will begin by the Head Referee bowing in the competitors and matching them up for competition. Coaching is not allowed.

LEGAL TECHNIQUE

Legal technique includes kicking to either the body or light contact to the head gear and punching (body only). Punching to the face is not allowed.

LEGAL TARGET

Body: The legal body target consists of the front portion of the body, starting at the side seams of the uniform and forward, from the bottom of the neck, down

to the belt. The neck, back and groin are not legal targets. The body targets may be attacked with either the hand or the foot and will constitute one point.

Head: Light contact to the sides and front of the head gear, with the foot, will constitute two points. Hand contact to the head gear is not a legal attack. Face

contact with the foot is not legal or illegal.

LEGAL STRIKING IMPLEMENTS

Foot: Legal foot attacks consist of : sole, ball, knife-edge, instep, heel and arch.

Hand: Straight punches to a legal body target, using the forefist only, will be scored when delivered off of the back leg and displace the opponent. Hooks, upper-

cuts, etc., are legal attacks (to the body) but will not be scored. Backfists and open hand attacks are not legal.

PROHIBITED ACTS:

Holding

Escaping from fighting by turning back to opponent

Stepping out of boundary to escape fighting

Attacking opponent with unauthorized attacking implement (knee, knifehand, backfist, etc.)

Throwing or sweeping opponent

Faking injury

Stalling

Attacking an unauthorized area (back, legs, groin, joints, back of head)

Pushing

Intentional falling

Hand strike to head

Unsportsmanlike conduct (gestures, questioning the referee, undesirable comments, etc.)

Attacking a fallen opponent

Intentional attack after the referee has stopped the match

Malicious or excessive attack causing swelling or bleeding.

SCORING PROCEDURE

During the match, the referee will stop the fight each time he/she sees a point scored and will call for points from the corner judges. They will indicate if they

saw the point by holding up the corresponding, colored flag. Either three corner judges or two corner judges and the center referee must agree for the point to

be awarded. The winner is the competitor who earns the most points throughout the two minute match.

***All competitors must wear head gear, chest protector, mouth guard, elbow pads/hand pads or WTF gloves/forearm guards, foot pads and groin cup (males

only).
