Richard Cook, President of UADSA.

Hello, I’m proud to be serving the students here at the University of Abertay and it is my job to help all students at this University with whatever they need. In order to do this I want to achieve four policy changes over the course of the year to improve your time at Abertay: development of a student’s owned letting agency run by UADSA, promote the living wage to ensure students have more money in their pocket, make Student Led Abertay Media (SLAM) bigger and improve educational facilities used by Abertay Students.

THE SAAT A

GLANCE

What is UADSA?

The University of Abertay Dundee Students’ Association (UADSA) is an independent body which represents all students.

How do I know if I’m a member?

If you have matriculated at the University of Abertay and not chosen to opt out you are a member of the UADSA.

How do I opt out?

You have four weeks after matriculation to opt out and all you have to do is come to the student FHQWUHRI¿FHORFDWHGLQWKHVWXGHQWFHQWUHQGÀRRUDQGDVNIRUWKHIRUPV

What will it mean for me if I opt out?

UADSA will continue to support and represent you if you chose to opt out, however you will be XQDEOHWRKROGDQ\UHSUHVHQWDWLYHRI¿FHZLWKLQWKHSA, including sabbatical, executive, club, society or recreational position. “Anyone can be a Class Rep. The UADSA holds a Class Rep Conference - Preppin for Reppin

– where you will receive professional training by SPARQS. It’s sanctioned by the University and if

you want to learn more then head to the website and check out our Democracy pages.

All Class Reps are expected to attend the Student Representative Committee (SRC) meetings.

As a Class Rep you carry a lot of responsibility, however there is so much you can get out of

taking on this role such as; shape direction, voice heard, help your fellow students, develop pro-

gramme and develop new skills.”

The Purpose of UADSA Fancy becoming a class rep?“Democracy and representation is an integral part of what UADSA does on a day to day

basis, but we can’t do it all. We need committed students who want to make a change.

As a Class Rep you have the opportunity to play an integral part in shaping the activities and

direction of UADSA from campaigns to policy.

Taking on the responsibility of a class rep also means that you will play an important role

in relaying the concerns of your class mates to academics and helping to improve the learning

experience of your fellow students.”

A trip in the lift or up the main staircase to the top of the building. The café has an exciting menu of hot drinks, chilled juices, delicious cakes, and uncomplicated food. It is a relaxed contemporary cafe serving breakfast, and lunch every weekday.

The Gallery Cafe is a designated healthy eating space as part of the 8QLYHUVLW\¶V+HDOWK\:RUNLQJ/LYHVInitiative and all main meals match that criteria. Located along with the HMC art gallery, it is the perfect place to go to for students wishing to move away from a noisy environment as the café is praised for its chilled and quiet atmosphere.

Beyond the exhibition space we have outdoor terrace seating which offers great views of the city and is a glorious place to be on a nice sunny day.

The Centre also houses a state of the art cinema and performance space that seats 72 and runs an experimental ¿OPDQGYLGHRVHULHVDORQJVLGHVWXGHQW¿OPQLJKWVDQGDPXOWLWXGHRIRQHRIIscreenings, performances and seminars.

SLAM

MAGAZINE-XVWODVW\HDU$EHUWD\VWXGHQWVHVWDEOLVKHGWKH

¿UVWVWXGHQWPDJD]LQHDW$EHUWD\IRUHLJKW\HDUVStudent-Led Abertay Media (SLAM) is an exciting venture which allows our students a platform to write for and reach out to the whole of Abertay. Students who take on the responsibility to write articles and features for SLAM enable them to learn new skills, take on new responsibilities and meet other students with similar interests.

Currently, the magazine has had three publications and is going from strength to strength as many students begin to recognise the EHQH¿WVRIJHWWLQJLQYROYHGDQGH[SHULHQFLQJWKHexcitement of seeing their own article published in a magazine.

The magazine however, is only one aspect of SLAM, the intention is to kick-start the multimedia side of our student media this year; from podcasts to radio, to videos and photography SLAM is looking for the rich talents of Abertay to take these FKDQFHVDQGXVHWKHPIRUWKHEHQH¿WRIHYHU\RQHstudying here. Getting involved is also really EHQH¿FLDOIRU\RXUQH[WVWHSVDIWHU8QLYHUVLW\because of the trend of employability within recent years investing time into student media can prove WREHDIDQWDVWLFDVVHWWRDGGWR\RXU&9RUportfolio.

That being said of course, when you take these RSSRUWXQLWLHV\RXPD\HQGXS¿QGLQJWKDWWKLVLVa career that suits you and that you might pursue further. The skills you learn in student media and the tricks you pick up from others interested in writing, photography, video-editing and audio will help prepare you for future employment.

But of course, what SLAM needs is passion DQGDJURXSRIH[FHOOHQWVWXGHQWVWRÀDXQWWKDWpassion. Going into student media allows you to be the voice that challenges, brings insight and extends that much-needed knowledge to all the students at Abertay. So with that, if this sounds like something you want to get involved in, please FRQWDFW\RXU3UHVLGHQWDW8$'6$5LFKDUG&RRNon [email protected].

You might have come from down the road or overseas, you could be studying full time or part time, but no matter what you’re background you are about to start one of the most exciting experiences of your life - a chance to meet new people, learn a thing or two and have an opportunity to change the world.

You might think that last one was a big and bold statement to make, but I genuinely believe that students are capable of changing the world.

Getting involved in the University of Abertay Dundee Students’ Association is a great way to start. The University of Abertay Dundee Students’ Association exists to change students’ lives by:

• campaigning to make sure that money is never a barrier to your making the most of your talent, so that access to education is based on ability to learn, not the ability to pay

• working to improve learning and teaching, so that students receive a high quality learning experience

• offering advice and support, so you always have a peer to turn to when times are tough

NUS Scotland

President • organising events and activities, so that you develop transferable skills outside the classroom

Students driving change

You are also part of an even bigger collective of around 500,000 students across Scotland. 2YHUWKHSDVWWZR\HDUVDORQH1866FRWODQGhas co-ordinated the efforts of students across Scotland, and we’ve already won lots:

• :HVHFXUHGYRWHVDWPHDQLQJWKDWand 17 year olds will be able to vote in the Scottish Independence referendum.

• :HIRXJKWDJDLQVWFROOHJHFXWV186Scotland’s campaigning reversed £127m worth of cuts to colleges in Scotland

• Free education maintained for Scottish and EU students studying at university in Scotland worth up to £135m per year and secured 8000 additional university places for students from the poorest backgrounds

• :H¶YHLQFUHDVHGVWXGHQWVXSSRUWEQextra in student loans to hugely improve HE student support, putting a maximum level of support of £7250 a year into the pockets of the poorest students in Scotland

The year ahead

Looking ahead it’s clear to me that we need to be working together to achieve more for students in Scotland, to ensure that students’ rights are protected in the environments that they live in, learn in and to make sure that all of this is appropriately funded.

• Living – In 2014 we have the opportunity to shape the future of Scotland, to decide whether Scotland should become an LQGHSHQGHQWFRXQWU\:HZDQWWRPDNHVXUHthat the student voice is heard.

• /HDUQLQJ:HZDQWWKH6FRWWLVKHGXFDWLRQsystem to be visionary, for education to be accessible and interesting and for there to be no snobbery. That’s why over the next year we will be creating a vision for the future of education.

• Funding - Over the next year we will be working with the Scottish Government to protect long term university and college funding, making sure that places are protected, that teaching is good quality and that you are receiving the bursaries and grants that allow you to continue with your university education.

:KHWKHU\RX¶UHSDVVLRQDWHDERXWHGXFDWLRQequality, sports or the environment, you have a powerful role to play.

Enjoy your time at Abertay University. Get involved and remember that you are now part of a union - that means there will always be someone there to stand up for you, and always someone for you to stand up with.Gordon Maloney
