WHAT IS THE DESIGN PROCESS? WHY IS IT HELPFUL?

The Design Process is an approach for breaking down a large project into manageable chunks. Architects, engineers, scientists, and other thinkers use the design process to solve a variety of problems. Use this process in each division to define the steps needed to tackle each project, and remember to hold to all of your ideas and sketches throughout the process.

THE DESIGN PROCESS CONSISTS OF 6 STEPS:

1. Define the ProblemYou can’t find a solution until you have a clear idea of what the problem is.

2. Collect InformationCollect sketches, take photographs and gather data to start giving you inspiration.

3. Brainstorm and Analyze IdeasBegin to sketch, make, and study so you can start to understand how all the data and information you’ve collected may impact your design.

4. Develop SolutionsTake your preliminary ideas, and form multiple small-scale design solutions.

5. Gather FeedbackPresent your ideas to as many people as possible: friends, teachers, professionals, and any others you trust to give insightful comments.

6. ImproveReflect on all of your feedback and decide if or to what extent it should be incorporated.

It is often helpful to take solutions back through the Design Process to refine and clarify them.

LEVEL 1 LEVEL 2 PARTNER Metropolitan Planning Council

OVERVIEW

Together with the City of Chicago, Friends of the Chicago River and many others, the Metropolitan Planning Council spent the past year scouring existing plans and working with residents and river enthusiasts to design a long-term vision and action agenda for Chicago’s 100-plus miles of rivers. Their collective goal for 2040 is that Chicago’s rivers will be inviting, productive, and living. Getting to the riverfront can be difficult in some communities, and in many places there is no public land along the river.

THE CHALLENGE

Design a community center and public space on a barge that can be docked along the river. You must research and choose a specific location and community you want to serve. A standard barge is a 35’ x 192’ rectangle. You are not required to build a full model of a barge, but will rather design the space above the water. You must explain how you address a specific community need through your design.

Physical Model: River Barge

THE DESIGN PROCESS

Identify the problem • Read “The Challenge” above. • Choose a location to place your barge.

Collect information • Research Chicago’s rivers, starting with the Great Rivers Chicago vision.• Where can you access the river? If you can’t, how do you wish you could? • How do other cities put public space on the river?

Brainstorm & Analyze • Make several bubble diagrams of your area.• What are the possibilities being on a barge vs on land?• What kind of potential activities could happen on your barge?

Develop Solutions • What could be indoors? Outdoors? In-between?• What materials could you use to represent your design?

Get Feedback & Improve • Ask your teacher, friends, family, neighbors, what they think of your design. • Get professional feedback at CAF’s Teen Open Studios (See page 3).

LEVEL 3 PARTNER Borderless Studio & ARCHEWORKS

OVERVIEW

Architects and designers are very interested in reactivating overlooked spaces. In 2013, Chicago Public Schools closed 49 elementary schools, many of which are still vacant today. Although plans are emerging for what the interior of some of these buildings could be, less effort has been invested in thinking about how empty space around buildings could be used.

Borderless Studio & Archeworks are collaborating to explore the future community roles of these closed school sites through the lens of Public Interest Design. Three schools that Borderless Studio & Archeworks have researched three schools extensively:

• Drake (2710 S Dearborn St) • Overton (221 E 49th St)• West Pullman (11941 S Parnell Ave)

THE CHALLENGE

Identify one of the 3 schools (Drake, Overton, or West Pullman) and redesign the open space around the school buildings to become an active asset to the surrounding community. Your solution must include at least one new structure, and show thoughtful and creative use of outdoor space. Most importantly your design must fit within the context of the specific lot, neighborhood, and community. You cannot remove the school, you must design with it in mind and demonstrate that the space could be reactivated, used, and serve as a community asset. THE DESIGN PROCESS

Identify the problem• Read “The Challenge” above. • Identify the school you want to work with. • What opportunity might be provided by using/repurposing the school grounds

Collect information

• Define what functions your space could serve. • Consider purposes the school may have served in addition of teaching children.

Could your solution bring any of those uses back to the site Brainstorm & Analyze

• What are the community assets around the school? Are there essential services missing within a half-mile radius of the school?

• Make a massing model of the area, play with scale. • Lay out the site. Where are the opportunities to engage the community

Develop Solutions

• Firm up the program of your building(s). • Create pathways that connect entrances and activities

Get Feedback & Improve

• Ask your teacher, friends, family, neighbors, what they think of your design. • Get professional feedback at CAF’s Teen Open Studios (See page 3).

LEVEL 2 LEVEL 3 PARTNER UIC Chicago Partnership for Health Promotion

OVERVIEW

University of Illinois at Chicago’s Office of Community Engagement and Neighborhood Health Partnerships, Chicago Partnership for Health Promotion (CPHP) provides high quality nutrition education, health promotion, and disease prevention services for eligible families in Chicago. CPHP values the role of community gardening as a health promoting space for nutritional, mental, and physical stimulation. Community gardens can anchor nearby residents and provide a space for collaboration, shared responsibility, and communication.

CPHP has identified an important opportunity in their partner community gardens: design ways to easily teach classes. Since a major goal of CPHP is to help educate communities on how to be healthy, teaching spaces in community gardens are an increasingly important tool for carrying out their mission.

THE CHALLENGE

On an empty Chicago lot (25’ x 125’), design an intergenerational community garden that also acts as a teaching space. Ensure that your design meets the needs of both educators and visitors of all ages, and functions as an active community garden.

LEVEL 1 LEVEL 2 LEVEL 3 PARTNER American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA)

OVERVIEW

Signage can help define and represent a neighborhood’s past, present, or future identity (or all three). As a physical structure and a visual element, signage crosses boundaries between architecture and graphic design. For this challenge, CAF is collaborating with the Chicago chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), an organization that unites, educates, and advances the Chicago design community.

THE CHALLENGE

Including only a name and graphic illustrations, design a sign to be placed in a neighborhood/town that represents the identity, history, or residents of that area. Your final design can either be fixed onto a building or exist as a stand-alone sign. Either way you must begin by choosing a location, and design to that specific context.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

Identify the problem• Read “The Challenge” above.• Choose a location for your sign. Does your area have a main intersection/street?• What is the context of the sign (what’s it around, who sees it, does this location have specific

importance?) Collect information

• Research the history of your area.• Is anything new developing?

Brainstorm & Analyze

• Think about colors, patterns, themes that help give your area its identity.• What material is your sign made of/printed on? How does that change its meaning?

Develop Solutions

• Don’t fall in love with your first idea. When you have a layout and design you like, save it, close it, and make another.

Get Feedback & Improve

• Ask your teacher, friends, family, neighbors, what they think of your design.• Get professional feedback at CAF’s Teen Open Studios (See page 3).

LEVEL 1 LEVEL 2 LEVEL 3 PARTNER Solomon Cordwell Buenz

OVERVIEW

Solomon Cordwell Buenz (SCB) is an architecture, interior design, and planning firm with a thoughtful design vision and a dynamic national imprint. With offices in Chicago and San Francisco, SCB is recognized as one of the nation’s leading designers of urban residential buildings, having completed design and construction of more 105 high-rise multi-family residential buildings. One of the current trends in urban residential design is “micro-units”, small, studio-apartments. What is “small” differs from city to city, but in Chicago, a micro-unit is typically 350 square feet or less in size. A major key to successful micro-unit design is efficient space usage, using every square inch to include all of the features a person expects to have at home. Many micro-units feature built-in storage and flexible furniture, furniture that can serve a variety of functions.

THE CHALLENGE

Design a single piece of furniture that combines the function of at least three pieces of furniture. This object must serve the main purpose of saving space. Build a digital model, and be sure it showcases all the functions of your piece.

OVERVIEW

Photography is a powerful tool in storytelling. Out of Chicago brings together passionate photographers for amazing photo experiences: photography tours, workshops, and photo walks in the Chicago area. Chicago’s diagonal streets are an innovation that cut through the rigid city grid and help save people time and money.

THE CHALLENGE

Capture the identity of one of Chicago’s many diagonal streets through a series of photographs. Showcase the culture, history, and/or people that make this street unique and important.

LEVEL 1 LEVEL 2 LEVEL 3 PARTNER EXPO CHICAGO

OVERVIEW

EXPO CHICAGO, the International Exposition of Contemporary & Modern Art, has established the city of Chicago as a preeminent art fair destination, returning September 13-17, 2017. Initiating the beginning of the international fall art season each September, EXPO CHICAGO takes place at historic Navy Pier, whose vast vaulted architecture hosts leading international exhibitors presented alongside one of the highest quality platforms for global contemporary art and culture. As a city with a dedication to public art, Chicago’s Cultural Plan outlines a vision for art and culture that incorporated art into projects across the city. Chicago has more than 300 bridge and viaduct structures. Typical viaducts in Chicago are long bridge-like structures carrying a road or railroad over a lower road. They are supported by large arches or beams. The lower roads are often used for slower local traffic and pedestrians to cross under a larger, busy road like a highway.

THE CHALLENGE

Design a public mural for an underutilized viaduct that is at least 9 feet tall by 24 feet wide that will beautify and improve the public environment for area residents as a community-based work of art. Pick an underutilized viaduct in your neighborhood and design for each side of the viaduct. This mural should represent the identity, history, or residents of that area. Choose a location, and design to that specific context. You will be turning in a scaled representation of this mural.
